Yeah, gotta love those "As Advertised" signs. People see those, think "Oh, it's in the ad, it must be on sale!" Same thing with TPC's (temporary price cuts) - sometimes, if you flip up the TPC sign, you'll see that the original price was the same to begin with, so you're actually not saving anything (or maybe like 2 cents - see Vitamin Water "sales"), but it looks so much better when it has a flashy sign in front. ;)
Don't get me wrong, I adore Target, as their clearance selection is often quite good at my store, but I've learned long ago to avoid their general "sale" prices.

Target is failing pretty bad lately, all around. Their entertainment ads are always MSRP, they are extremely cutting back on cashiers, and their CS is going down. The only thing I go to Target for anymore is clearance deals on clothes and games. Because with their fabulous sale prices in the ads, there's plenty of clearance to choose from.

Now that Circuit City has fallen, there's that much less competition, so they don't need to lower their prices to compete.
Circuit City didn't have enough market share to impact the video game market post-mortem. With all of the online retailers + the rest of the B&M stores, prices are essentially unaffected.

Uh no. There was lots of competition to get people in the door by having games $10 off or to offer a gift card with purchase of games the week they came out. Deals at Target/Best Buy have taken a severe drop in the last month since the announcement of CC being liquidated.

deals, ad titles, circular placement is all determined months in advance not weeks
as stated the closing of CC will have little to no effect on competition and the pricing of goods

first off, offering a gift card to buy another item in their store is just another way for them to have customers spend the same amount of money given out.... back to the store they bought it at.
I would consider a sale to be a significant decrease from the original MSRP price without having to pay full price, get a stupid gift card, and can only spend that gift card back at target. I'll be honest, if you really wanted to purchase something that had a gift card gig attached to it, don't use that gift card back at the store, sell it to someone, preferably on ebay, at least it would be a real savings, b/c you'll get the majority of that money back instead of having to spend it back at Target.
In plain terms, you buy a game at 59.99, get the card for 5.00 and 10.00, and you have to use that card again at target????? Target isn't loosing anything, it's not a freakin deal??? IT's called getting you in the door, NO DEAL HERE. It's like the 10 for 10 at Winn-Dixie, HELLO??? the items were worth 1.00 to begin with, if any dumb person fell for that deal, please post on here.

I would argue for many (including myself) this indeed would be considered a deal
Target offers a wide enough depth and breadth of product that there is always something I am going to need/want that I can purchase there so I have definate use for 5 or 10 dollars to spend in their store at that moment or in the future
there are however other retailers such as TRU which I will avoid when running the same promos as it would be much harder for me to see myself spending money (via gc redemption) for something I truly need in the future.

02-28-2009, 08:08 PM
Just pre-ordered my copy. The guy working there had no idea about this deal which is odd considering this should be in next weeks paper. You'd think associates are notified about stuff like this at least a week in advance.

:razz:Just to clarify, since I know, the scenario you're presenting for TPCs almost never happens. TPCs are generally extended sales. Sometimes a few weeks, sometimes a few months. Since you can have the sales going on for such a long time, and retail moves quickly, sometimes the price gets dropped to the TPC price while it's on TPC. I've seen that happen a few times, but I've never seen something go TPC for the regular price. It's more of an issue with a store being a very big place and the different tasks being handled by different teams who generally don't work at the same time of day. It's not some big ruse on the part of Target.
On the other hand, the "As Advertised" thing was always irritating because you would have to explain to a guest that there was no need to give them a rain check because that was the regular price. And the really lame thing that seems to happen is that a game will get a universal price drop and Target will put it on clearance for that price instead of marking it down regularly.
Most of these games in both ads are new releases, anyway. They're being advertised to show people that they are coming/here. Not everyone knows specific release dates like most of us would.

first off, offering a gift card to buy another item in their store is just another way for them to have customers spend the same amount of money given out.... back to the store they bought it at.
I really hope you were drunk when you posted that...

Let's break it down into simpler terms for you. What is a better deal? Picking up Resident Evil 5 at Target for 49.99 or going to TRU, getting it for 49.99, and using that 20 GC to pick up, say, a nearly free copy of Mass Effect (gotta pay that sales tax)
?

anyone know if there's a way to search the site for games by price? I've been trying for 30 minutes and cant figure it out :bomb:

Wouldn't be surprised if the gift card can't be used immediately and will expire after a month or so. I'll be price matching at Best Buy.
I'll be doing the same, but I suspect they'll turn me away. I think I remember a post a while back about Best Buy not honoring GC deals. It's unfortunate, call me weird, but I don't going to Toys R Us to get an M rated game.

I would argue for many (including myself) this indeed would be considered a deal
Target offers a wide enough depth and breadth of product that there is always something I am going to need/want that I can purchase there so I have definate use for 5 or 10 dollars to spend in their store at that moment or in the future
there are however other retailers such as TRU which I will avoid when running the same promos as it would be much harder for me to see myself spending money (via gc redemption) for something I truly need in the future.
apparently this is the only person that understood this. Everyone else had trouble reading

Now, I may be mistaken, but I believe he's referring to a kind of roundabout way that Atlus gave him the gift certificate (not actually a coupon). For 20 bucks, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a steal! Probably one of the best online shooters that I've ever played (and I've played COD4, GOW 2, and Halo 3 I might add). If you've played the first Vegas, single player in this game is a little meh, since it's more of the same. But online is where this game shines. I've been playing this game on XBOX Live for about a year, and it's still as fun as the first day I got it. Do yourself a favor and buy it now. Trust me, you won't regret it.
Oh, and $40 for a brand new COD 4:GOTY is as cheap as you're going to get if you're considering purchasing this game.

I don't think it's a universal price drop, since GameStop, in the past, have offered one week only specials of this game at $39.99. The price quickly went back to its original retail price of $59.99 once the deal expired. I think this is the first game in history that hasn't seen a universal price drop one and a half years after its release. Just goes to show you how good this game is, and how well its selling to this day.

Did you enjoy the multiplayer aspect of the first game? If so, I would definitely recommend purchasing Vegas 2 for this low price. Don't buy Vegas 2 if you're just buying it for just the single player campaign. The game is too short and too similar to the first.

So what are the chances that TRU would sell out of RE5? The closest one to me is pretty far away so I don't forsee myself preordering beforehand.

The GameStop I went to the other day, when picking up my Halo Wars preorder the guy tried to talk me out of it, he tried to tell me Halo Wars sucks and that I should just get RE5. Guess they weren't paid to advertise Halo Wars too well or something lol.

So what's preventing me from going to one Toys R Us, buying hte game, returning it keeping the GC.
going to a second TRU rinse and repeat.
going to a third, rinse and repeat.
until I get 3 or 4 gift cards and a (maybe) free game?
Odds are the receipt will show the purchase of a 20.00 GC for 20 bucks, and the game for 39.99. So you could do that, but you'd only get 39.99 back for the game. Most retailers don't sell things for "free" anymore, they have a nominal cost of .01, or a full charge on the freebie and a discount on the other item.
The Best Buy policy says "Mail-in rebates and other deferred savings are not deducted from the competitor's purchase price." A gift card sounds like a 'deferred savings' to me.
The only time I got something like this to work was at CC and I think the clerk did it wrong (I got the 10% from GSC, and the gift card value immediately applied because she shouldn't get it to work).

Go one more below that and it says:
How do you handle a price match if an instant gift card is included with a purchase?
The value of an instant gift card with purchase will be considered when calculating a price match. If the combined value of a competitor's product and instant gift card is lower than the combined value of Best Buy's product price and instant gift card, Best Buy will match either the price or the instant gift card value, depending on the offer.

There's an ad, I don't remember if it shows the gift card but it does say that you get a free $20 GC for buying it, on Friday and Saturday only though. If you can price match a promo like that at BB that would be awesome but I'm not so sure if they'd match that sort of promotion. I want to know if they would though, since I'd rather use a 20 dollar GC at BB than a TRU one...

I wasn't particularly interested in RE5 until I heard about this advertisement. Looks like a pretty sure thing now that I realize that all my purchases as of late (Killzone 2, SFIV, and EndWar) all have a large MP component, and I'd like to have a strictly-SP experience sometimes.

That implies that the offer that BB offers would have also needed to include a GC with it as well, which it doesn't. Besides, TRU is offering RE5 for "sale" at the general MSRP, same as BB. PMing this TRU deal anywhere won't fly, since it's really not a "deal", rather a bonus.

j7 the toys r us website has an ad on the front page for the 2 for $30 deal. click on it and it will come up with a list of 367 games. i assume these are the same games they have in stores for the deal
No good deals on RE5, sigh. $10 off or something would be nice. I guess the Toys R Us deal isn't bad... Will they subtract $20 off the price at the register? Because I don't really shop at Toys R Us.

Not all the games on the site are in stores, and in the past they didn't include every game on the site in B&M deals if I recall correctly. I guess it's the best we got though.

BB will price-match, but you should print the instore pricematch policy and take it with you along with the ad from TRU. At BB, in my experience, they claim they don't pricematch gift card offers, and then I bust out my printed instore pricematch from the website, and then the CSR turns around and says to the manager, "we got another one... should I just do it like before?" and of course she was just straight up lying to me to my face. Did this for Gears of War 2, Call of Duty World at War, and Resistance 2, last fall, only with me having the instore pricematch policy printed with me. Now, it might be possible to get it for 2 dollars less, if you buy the game at the register, and immediately go the customer service desk with the ad and point our the 10% of the difference policy in addition to the regular pricematch. You can only do this AFTER you buy the game though. Worst case is that they just won't give you the extra 2 bucks.

What would probably happen is they would refund the cash you paid and give you another $20 gift card. The sales receipt shows that you paid part of it with a GC and there's no way to hide that. Although you could get lucky. At Gamestop I occasionally get money back on returns I paid for in credit so. . .

But the website says they will only do it if the combined value of the TRU game and GC is lower than the combined value of the game at BB. $39.99+$20=$59.99 so it is not lower than BB price of $59.99.

What he is saying is something I actually was thinking about..
Buy Re 5 and get 20 dollar gift card on receipt 1 for 60 dollars (40 cash for game and 20 for GC is the print out.)
Buy Re5 again with another 60 dollars (now you have two two copies of re5 and 40 in gift cards for 120 dollars. )
Return one of the Re5's on your original receipt where you spent 40 in cash on Re5 and get that money back.
Now you spent 80 dollars and have a copy of Re 5 and two 20 dollar gifts.

lol @ i just looked at my formula and realized how stupid it really is...your better off buying re5 and an extra 20 dollar GC from the start.
The true "profittering" doesnt cash in i guess until you do it a third time and you have enough gift cards to buy a free game. In which case you really aren't getting anywhere with it. Total wash.

I started off questioning their PM policy regarding included GCs. When she asked for an example, I said TRU was doing something for RE5 on Friday and Saturday where a $20 GC was included with the purchase. She said they would do a similar thing (but maybe I can get them to just lower the price to $40 when I come in on Friday).
But as others have said, it's a YMMV thing. If it does work, take note of the call time, date, and the person you spoke to. And include the TRU ad and BB PM policy when you walk in.

Yeah, I tried calling another BB in my area and the worker said the same, "scripted" answer: that they only price match prices and not free gifts. She did not answer my comment regarding their price matching policy posted online. *sigh* I have a $50 gift card that I got from my credit card "rewards" program and was hoping to get a really good deal on RE5. Sucks that some BB are still being asses about matching TRU. TRU always runs these gift card things, and the BB near me always either takes the gift card amount off the price of the game, OR gives me a BB gc matching TRU. Maybe if BB came up these gc deals to compete with TRU we wouldn't have to complain to them all the time and instead shop solely at BB. Maybe since CC is closed, BB thinks they have complete control over everything.

just have them call the corporate hq, most won't even bother, they don't want to be troubled, and if there are other people in line behind you they will just give it to you. The most important thing is just take the print out with you. I got them so used to matching the TRU gift card offers that I don't need it anymore.

You are neglecting the combined value. The gift card still has the $20 value to be combined with the $60 game (60-20 = 40 net for the purposes of combination).

Why buy it at GameStop for full price when you could get a $20 game/something else for "free"? I'm sure you could use it online. At least having a gift card for later use is better than nothing at all (other than people asking you why you didn't reserve it).

Well you do need to wait about 6 hours before the GC activates but your point still stands.
Wait, what? It takes 6hrs for the gift card to even be usable?

I'm very excited to play the game. So excited that I'd rather play it in a couple of hours than wait until tomorrow. Not to mention I don't shop at TRU for much of anything as it's fairly far away from me. $20 gift card is a great deal but I'd have that gift card for ages, and I don't plan on buying any game or any other item TRU might stock for a long while. I'm sure I'd appreciate it at some point in the future, but the bored part of me doesn't think it's worth it. Trying to pricematch at BB sounds pretty dodgy, and I've only had poor experiences with them when it comes to matching something that isn't a clear price printed on a flyer...

:-k I just don't understand people anymore. You can't wait a few more hours for $20? I guess I haven't bought into the hype. That's why I'll only be tryign to price match it at Best Buy. I also have a $5 gift certificate so RE5 for $35 sounds good to me. Also I'll have a little bit lef tover to get some PS2 or cheap 360 games at Gamestop :D
No wait I can I just don't want to.

You can just get another copy at TRU/BB and return it to wherever you got the first one.
You know I hadn't thought of that.

Yeah it's the best way to get games for cheap on Amazon/Newegg (free shipping) while still playing the game on release day.

How would you go about price adjusting with the gift card for RE5? You have to wait around 6 hours and then come back and price adjust to knock it to $40? Or can you do it on the spot?

Wait a tic. When did we ever have to wait 6 hrs for a gift card to be usable?
I remember just getting the giftcard and then immediately buying something else with it when they did this giftcard thing with Mario Galaxy.

Sorry if it's been asked alot, I looked through a couple pages but didn't see anything...
How does TRU work with releases? I don't buy a whole lot of new games, and except for the midnight launch for Halo 3 it seems everytime I would go into gamestop to pick my game up (usually around 11-1130 am on launch day) I was told to come back later because the UPS guy hadn't dropped them off yet. Is this a game they've already recieved, so if I were to go during my lunchbreak this morning they should have it in stock?

I just went to a local TRU. The game was not out on the floor but they had it in the back. I assume they got in in early because the box had a street date of 3/13 on it so your store should have it to sell at open.
You can also use the giftcard right away.

i got RE5 from TRU and they told me the GC doesn't expire but after a year of inactivity, they would start taking money off of it.
