Gave it a chance, the "in-between levels" sections are very tedious, and besides that, it's so hard to tell where to go next that I just gave up and sold it.

Part of me wants to get this.
But then the other part kicks in and reminds that side that the game has Werehog.

That's about $20 more than it should be. Just get Ultimate Genesis Collection and remember Sonic that way forever and just forget that 3D Sonic ever happened.

I bought this game when it was $20 on Amazon during the holiday sales. It's not worth $15 people. The game flat out sux, believe the reviews they were right. I was able to break even by trading in this turkey to Gamestop and getting back my $20. My advice is to find yourself a good game.

i thought it was pretty good game. though the werehog stages were repetitive, the sonic levels made up for it ten fold iMO.

Wow, the Wii version is $10 more than the PS2 version? Aren't they usually the same?

It's because the Wii version is the best of the bunch. It has the best controls and got the best review scores.

It can't be that bad, surely?
FYI I have ordered a copy, thanks.

The game is great if you like 3D Sonic games.
If you don't then.....uh.....maybe not.
I played the Wii version (to completion) first and really dug the controls. The werehog sections were a LITTLE tedious, but still pretty fun overall.
I'm working my way through the PS3 version now, which has a LOT more Sonic stages surprisingly.
It doesn't control quite as well as the Wii version but DAMN it looks pretty.
Plus I'm a bit of a trophy-whore so that adds to the experience for me, haha.

What a steal , it's worth 50, that what I paid for it. It's the best sonic game since the Dreamcast days. I know that's not saying much, but that's what it reminds me of when I play it.
I'd just like to advise against purchasing this game (360/PS3 version at least). I got it when it came out because the Sonic stages looked phenomenal, but near the end of the game, the stages got so frustrating that they literally started to give me chest pains. It's like the developers just stopped paying attention after the first couple stages. There were a lot of stages in which they give you a 1-up right after a checkpoint so you effectively have infinite lives to beat a section of a stage because it would have been nearly impossible otherwise. So it becomes less of a matter of skill, and more of just a time requirement until you happen to luck your way through the section. I feel like I wasted a lot of time playing the game because I don't even want to consider going back to try to beat it.
Footnote: I skipped all the cutscenes so I can't vouch for those, although the hub worlds, while unnecessary, were pretty charming, imo.

How dare you sir! That's from Airplane, one of the finest films ever made. Though since you applied the quote I shall let you off easy.
Word to the wise though: While all versions have Werehog levels (I believe all developed by Sonic Team) the day levels of the 360/PS3 versions were developed by Sonic Team while the PS2/Wii day levels were done by DIMPS (the guys responsible for Sonic Rush on the DS) so while there are fewer day levels in the PS2/Wii versions, reviews tended to say they much better than their HD counterparts. I can't really speak to the difference, as I bought the PS2 version when it was $10 on Amazon over Black Friday weekend, but it was enjoyable enough for $10.

Another Sonic deal thread, another post where I complain.
Dimps is poop. Unleashed day levels are poop. This game is in no way reminiscent of the classic 2D games or Adventure games. I will still buy at $20. :(

I bought this back at launch, when Amazon had that sale. I actually just started it a few days ago.
So I'm really impressed, with the caveat that I'll probably get stuck in it.
It looks great, and for the most part plays great so far. It's definitely the best Sonic game since Sonic Advance 1 and Sonic Adventure 1 (and I love the "Hedgehog Engine" logo :D ). Not that that's a tall order, but still.
At least with the early daytime levels, you can actually move fast-they're a lot more fun and a lot better designed than those terrible DIMPs handheld games.
So far I like the night levels pretty much equally. Yeah, the stretchy arms thing is a bit weird, but they play fine (and it doesn't actually look that weird 99% of the time-in fact I like his running animation). Your basic fighter/light puzzle/light RPG mechanic, except with a far more interesting setting (to me) than like God of War.
I know people bash these, but I kind of like that it has two types of platforming in it. They get to push the daytime levels further towards the "super fast, don't have to memorize stuff" side, which is good, and then can have slower, more deliberate platforming mixed in with the fighting and puzzle engine.
The "hub" type stuff so far isn't TOO annoying because it's so linear. There's basically one or two paths in each area I've been in, and people you can talk to are clearly marked. I probably spend 5 minutes tops in these places before moving on.
I would like the ability to save anywhere though! I can easily take 45 minutes in a level, and I wish they'd start using the hard drive consoles have now to let you save anywhere like most PC games.
Okay, so the bad...the two fights I've done were both super hard. The second one I burnt through 10 lives before I beat him. It actually wasn't THAT hard I think, except that there's SO much going on on screen, that it made it hard for me to concentrate on what I was doing. Like strip all that away, give it 8-bit graphics and it would have been fairly easy. (It does look great, but it should have been-at worst-half as difficult.)
I decided I was going to give up and sell it if I couldn't beat that guy before I ran out of lives.
So...I'm concerned it's going to keep getting harder, and I'll probably get stuck.
But even still, I've enjoyed this and gotten to play with it a LOT longer than any Sonic game since Adventures/Advance 1. If they'd dialed back the difficulty I'm sure I'd like this without reservations.
Seems like between this, Valkrie Chronicles, VF, and some others, Sega's starting to make a comeback, which is fantastic.
It's because the Wii version is the best of the bunch. It has the best controls and got the best review scores.
No it's not the best of the bunch. You can't compare review scores across console generations. It's being compared against Wii games and the like. If you're going to get this, get the real one for Playstation 3/Xbox 360.
EDIT: And from reading a quick review, the Wii version (unsurprisingly) has the WORST control, not the best.

Don't worry about Dimps. They didn't get their slimy hands on the real version of this, just the last gen port. Have you played the night levels yet? IMO they're fun. The fighting engine works as well as these types of games do, and I kind of like that it allows the for the game to be almost two kinds of platformers-pushing the daytime levels to be more about speed than they've ever been maybe, since you've got the nighttime levels for more deliberate pacing, mixed in with the fighting and light RPG stuff.
Now...it may get bad, I'm only probably < 6hours in, but so far it's just fine.
I'm not sure about the "eating" mechanic though. Apparently you have to replay stuff basically to get food, and I'm not sure why I'd need to or want to-maybe I can just ignore that, not sure yet. (Looks like these food vendors give you 'quests' which are really just achieving specific goals in a level you've already beaten.)
I don't know...so far though I'm enjoying it aside from those boss fights.
