View Full Version : God, Punisher was an awful movie.

I just tuned the film off, during the fight with the Russian. I couldn't take the lame attempts at comedy anymore- The neighbors, the looks of Thomas Jane's face during the fight, jeez.

Whose great idea was it to make an R-rated film about a man avenging his wife and son into a comedy? Let me warn all to steer clear of this crap. Watch Man on Fire, a very good film instead.

Did anyone enjoy this film?

I did, as the comedy was second tier. The action, and story was good. Have you ever read thecomic? It's ultra-violent, but funy as hell.

I like my violence without any comic relief.

No, never read the comic.

I thought the movie wasn't too bad. I enjoyed actually a lot, pretty good story, pretty good action. I really never payed too much attention to the comedy in the first place.

I enjoyed the movie as well, I mean if I wanted to see yet another run of the mill revenge story I would track down a few Steven Seagal flicks.

I loved it. I think you just expected too much out of it. It does get quite violent in the end fight.

There's got to be a little comic relief in fights, otherwise it's just slaughter. There was some in Kill Bill. There's some in nearly every action movie.. get over it.

Name 5 big-screen action movies that have absolutely no moments of comic relief, it should take you a little while. I didn't like it too much but for a totally different reason. In fact if I never read the comic I probably would've liked it more, because I just don't think it was that faithful to Frank Castle's character. As for the comic relief in it, there was some in the comics, so of course there will be some in the movie. God forbid they stay somewhat faithful to the source material.

I heard, from off all people, my dad, that this movie was great. He said that if you look at it as an action film with no shoes to fill, it's damn good. Travolta makes it all the better, IMO.

Some of those movies sucked, man. And some in your list did have comic moments.

There is nothing more tiring than an action movie that takes itself too seriously. Two of my fave action movies are Die Hard: With a Vengeance and Lethal Weapon 4. I like them because there are some funny fucking moments in each. Beatrix Kiddo pulling out Elle Driver's eye is fucking funny, and I'm glad it's there. What is wrong with that? The fact that your main complaint lies against a comic-book adaptation makes it even harder to agree with you.

Hell yeah, man. Those moments in Die Hard, Lethal Weapon 4 and Kill Bill Vol. 2 make the film all the better. Lethal Weapon 4 would be a terrible movie without the comedy. :D

You should have rented man on fire instead.

Now Denzel Washington knows how to punish people.

Okay IMO war movies are somewhat of a different genre than somehting like Punisher (same goes for Hero and Last Samurai), but some of those you listed still had comic relief bits/characters

BHD = had some comic relief in the early parts

We Were Soldiers (there's no "When" btw)= Some of Sam Elliot's character

Last Samurai = Some of Billy Connelly's character

Aliens = kinda Bill Paxton's character

Matrix = many parts of comic relief

Hero = Not really an action movie IMO

Band of Brothers = Not a big-screen movie, but still Ron Livingston's character

Replacement Killers = I never saw

Enemy at the Gates = somewhat Ron Perlman's character

Sniper movies = I never saw them

U-571 = You're probably right, I can't recall it too well

Road Warrior = the weird guy with the flying machine

Terminator = I can't recall it too well either, but I vaguely remember one or two things that made you smirk, I know the 2nd one had a lot of them

I don't do this to be a jackass or anything, I just wanted to point out that most every movie (some do indeed exist w/o it) that is heavy on action/violence has to at least have one or two quick bits to break it up or the audience gets burned out. They have to see some bit of humanity in the film and the characters.

It's basically a staple of movie making so you can't find too much fault with a movie that includes some comic relief in it. Granted maybe you thought it was too thick in Punisher, which is understandable I suppose. But also don't forget it was based on a comic, comics typically aren't totally serious (once again some are on ocassion).

How can you say that Black Hawk Down is not an action movie???????

90% of that movie was action! In fact, I don't know any other movie that comes close.

Black hawk Down was a war movie, which I personally consider more like a subgenre for action movies. Yeah there was indeed a heck of a lot of action scenes, but IMO you can't lump together war movies in comparison to a movie like Punisher.
