Edit: I'm gonna steal Wombat's metric converter. Flobbity Floos FTW! I never noticed any lag on the NXE.
Also, I'm not believing the whole "RE5" costs too much for Cheapy excuse. The Internetz Space Pimp has to have some PA credit or somethin' at least! lulz @ Wombat's Apple comment.

The infamous scene in Indy spawned the catchphrase "They nuked the fridge." It's become sort of a jumped the shark for describing shitty stuff these days.
Edit: Was a decent episode. You guys covered a lot of ground this week.

I think backwards compatibility is something that needs to stay in the next generation of consoles, namely the downloadable games. Imagine the uproar from gamers for companies saying 'yeah, thanks for spending hundreds of dollars on your downloadable games you can't have access to anymore'.
At least with a disc you still have it, and you could run it on an older console (assuming you still have it), and even if you don't have it, you can sell it for a few bucks.
menikmati

Crap, I forgot to edit my comment in the last CAGcast because you guys covered my comment right after I posted it, I fail.
I would have to agree with the ambiguity of what crosses the line in terms of representing sexual orientation on XBL.
You two brought up very good variables that all play a role in the simple statement of "I like men." We have no clue the gender of the speaker, the definition of the word "like," if it stands in the realm of just friends or a sexual level, or if it was meant as just a smart-ass way to say "I is gay."
I personally think that Microsoft has a "DO NOT WANT" stick attached to their arm and wouldn't touch anything related to anything outside of relationships, sexual orientation/preference, or even gender. A person can expect a lot of shit putting "Hermaphrodite" or "Post-op" in their profile and Microsoft could probably issue a suspension based on the "I don't want this shit on my service" law.
The lag/hanging on the 360 guide is annoying as shit for me. All these theories seem like bunk to me, I even reduced my friends list by 25 people and saw no performance increase. This has brought me to using the Guide less and less, to the point where I don't even press it to look at incoming messages if I'm within 1-2 minutes of something important. In other words, it makes me want to stab myself in the face.
I'm about 25 minutes in, going to call it a night and finish up on my commute to/fro class tomorrow.

The software for a hacked xbox, was called Xbox Media Center, I only correct you on that because it was an awesome piece of software.
also cheapy you could build a small form factor pc or an "HTPC" and stick in like a $70 video card with HDMI(there are actually much cheaper ones), I already have a desktop pc in my livingroom, so I stuck in one of these video cards and picked up a 30 ft hdmi cable for $15 bucks on ebay to hook up to my tv, thats my cheapass media center. Basically it clones my monitor signal to my tv (it can also be set as a dual monitor) and I can watch whatever I have on my pc or watch hulu.com on my tv.

To Wombat: People largely do not want home console games on the handheld, though I'm sure there are some. The reason is because given the choice, most people would rather play Resistance or God of War (for example) on a big TV screen with better graphics.
Even most of the big portable Nintendo games that sell well are decidedly different from their console counterparts. Plus they all kinda have crappy graphics anyway ;)
___________
Pachter's comments are off base because almost no one owns more than one console for that multiplatform comparison. The last sampling I saw on the matter had it at 95% single console, 3% two console, 2% three console. Gaming enthusiasts are a much smaller bunch than you would think by reading message boards.
Furthermore, how the mini-golf game that they actually enjoy compares favorably with Gears is irrelevant, because odds are they wouldnt like Gears
____________
Cheapy is right on the importance of backward compatibility. Its useful to a few, but in the big picture its not important from a sales perspective. Its merely a nice bullet point on the back of the box.
____________
If you get Pachter on, you gotta let people know ahead of time so we can get some questions to him. I've always wanted to ask him some things, since I'm into tracking sales numbers.

Continuing the trend, this show was the latest in a great streak! Having listened to every single cagcast atleast twice, I'd have to say these latest couple of shows are the greatest to date.
The dynamic between you guys and the energy has been great and you generally seem happier with the show!
To comment on your questions on what you would talk to Major Nelson or Michael Pachtor about, I'm sure two innovative guys like you can figure it out. For Major Nelson, how about having him on for an extended Microsoft segment and a Major Nelson dedicated cagbag? Just a thought.
Keep it up guys and thanks for all the great new features even if i dont get tremendous use out of them, being from Sweden, its still nice to see the site evolve.
Cheers

Cheapy, although you can't see individuals in your affiliate feedback on CAGs' purchases, have you been able to see a downward trend or an upward trend in the number of or size of purchases through CAG?
I know that in my area, the economy has everyone terrified and making sizeable cutbacks in personal purchases. Have people been flocking to CAG for their purchases as times get tough, or has everyone stopped purchasing in a desperate attempt to save money?
Love the show, and props to Wombat for excellent commentary on the industry.

I'm not sure how YouTube determines what is considered "indecent". There are tons of videos on that site that show teenage girls beating the shit out of each other, but they won't allow a video of a hotel room tour?
So baffling.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,
You should have Workman on your show. I think it would be the best episode ever. Also I haven't notice my Xbox Vista running any faster. It still takes forever for my friends avatars to show up and now the games they are playing takes longer to show up as well.
Oh and do a search in Youtube for 2 dudes kissing and see what comes up. Youtube is so inconsistant. Start using Vimeo instead.

Your tour of the sex hotel is way tamer than some of the things I've seen on YouTube and it was damn funny.
This video is WAY more offensive, yet somehow it remains?

The online system in KZ2 isn't perfect by any means but they do make it easy to find and join games with your friends and clan.
It still would be nice to have a party and invite system so you can guarantee you are on the same team when you want to be.
For the next CAGcast game, I suggest Wombat or Cheapy setting up the room, getting both you guys in there first, and THEN posting the info on the forums. That way you can make sure you both get in.
But Wombat is right, the popularity of this game on CAG is really high right now. There are three clans up and running atm!

Another great show guys, always looking forward to the next. I definitely like the idea of the CAG "Game Nights" with CheapyD and Wombat, and hope to join in next time you roll out Halo 3. Bring the Ships if possible.
Also, philosophical question: Is buying a game for at 76-100% MSRP count as a mark against you on your "CAG card"? I admit that there are a lot of games out there worth playing, but quite frankly I myself cannot justifying paying for a $45-60 game that I know will eventually (a few months) be $20 if not lower, either as a deal or normal price.
Maybe it's just because money is tight, but even when I start my new job tomorrow (same field as Shipwreck), I imagine that even with a salary I will still be a CAG at heart and buy games for no more than $20-30. It's certainly a personal choice, but I think picking up a game on launch day for full price goes against the nature of the site (something I am guilty of and still reel from Buyer's Remorse).

I'm sure there are a number of people with their own "steak" stories, but in any case - my brother in law (5'6", 135 lbs, pretty small), ate 32 oz (2 lbs) of steak at an Irish restaurant in town. But not only that, he had two Guiness', and a plate of poutine (french fries with cheese and gravy on them). It was utterly disgusting, but he actually ate it all...

Yeah... I succesfully completed the Beefeater contest (http://www.primequarter.com/specials.html). (40 oz (1.13 kilogram) steak plus a potatoe, texas toast, and a salad).
Man was not meant to eat that much food at one sitting. I have a lovely picture they took after completing the chalenge. I look half dead. I was shitting a liquid stream of pure hate and evil for two days after.

Re: Xbox Vista ~ Mine is still slow. I'm curious how you guys are seemingly getting it to run faster.
Re: Chronicles of Riddick: Assualt on Dark Athena ~ I liked the demo but there is definitely something up with the perspective. I had to double check more than once to make sure I wasn't walking around in 'crouch' mode. Maybe that's one of those legendary 'best kept secrets in Hollywood,' the fact that Vin Deisel is actually a midget or a hunchback.
And now Cheapy knows why the phrase "jumping the shark" has been replaced with "nuking the fridge."

As a UK user I might decide to stop listening to the show, so much taking the piss out of english accent, nah it was hilarious.
With John being on the show/hosting a UK podcast. I think you should get John on the show at somepoint, but I think him doing a CAG UK Podcast would be a little pointless. The CAG cast is international, i'm from the UK and it suits me perfectly. The talk of Japan and US is quite interesting.

CAG has the best intro music.
Also, I'd like to mention I enjoy this new CAG Game Night thought up by Wombat. I haven't played in one yet, but it's a great idea to do it as a weekly event. It definitely helps the community to meet you all and most importantly shows that you guys are willing to take a night out of the week to spend some 1 on 1 time with the community.

The question of Do you listen to podcasts while you game is an easy one for me to answer. Yes! I haven't listened to the games real music in months if not years. I always have a podcast playing if im not on live. Wombat you need to have a radio show featuring Jewbeard the pirate and his 1st mate Super Programmer John.

03-12-2009, 01:08 PM
Really enjoying the show guys. I agree with others that Wombat should just evolve fully into Jewbeard the pirate.
Also, I think Braid really follows the middle ground between the two opinions, I really only felt ripped off because I wanted a little more of a surface story, and not one that has to be "created" by 100 different people's opinions.

Cheapy: Your "I like men" idea in your gamertag profile would probably still warrant a ban even if they don't know your gender. It is still defining your relationship with men, either in sexual or non-sexual terms.
I think the argument should be more based on does your profile suggest or define an orientation, and what determines that (the users the submit complaints or MS) and why it is a problem.
If it truly is a problem, maybe MS needs to implement rating system for players:
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=5152&pictureid=5616
This player is a child. Do not shoot or swear at him/her. No pictures.
Make sure to jump up and down and make funny noises to keep this player entertained.
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=5152&pictureid=5615
Tries to have fun with everyone. No tea-bagging when you shoot this player with rainbows.
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=5152&pictureid=5614
Can almost play with everyone. Exercise caution with this player as he/she may be a choking hazard to small children.
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=5152&pictureid=5617
Grandpa will probably not like this player; will constantly try to add the word "penis" to every conversation.
Lasers fueled by hate and fear may shoot from player's eyes; this is common and can cause slight irritation upon contact.
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=5152&pictureid=5613
Warning: This player may tear you a new one, be it with a chainsaws or horribly distorted obscenities.
Might have used a hobo near the 7-Eleven to create this account.
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=5152&pictureid=5612
Player should be respected and a weekly tribute given to appease him/her.
Should help provide an enjoyable game experience, but current player may be offspring (check earlier ratings for expected play experience).
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=5152&pictureid=5611
Player can be any combination of previously stated ratings.
Warning: Player may be a cannibal or alien. To determine: Ask if they have read "To Serve Man" and base opinion on resulting conversation.

Listening to the show, and Cheapy, your comment about how KZ2 would be better on XBL is kinda a non-comment. I'm the first to admit that XBL has a lot going for it in online features. Sony's PS3 guys really need to make their next mandate to be standardized game invites.
Hey, they did it with Trophies.
Oh XBMC was Xbox Media Center. Not Xbox Media Connect.
Wombat, On the issue of portable gaming I do largely enjoy fully fleshed out experiences on the go. Just like how I might enjoy a playing a casual game on my home system. Call me unusual, but the PSP's load time don't typically bother me. Still I'd be all over a system that ditched the UMD.
We need more readings of pretentious reviews!
On the issue of Backwards Compatibility. It matters to me. But like Cheapy said, I didn't buy a current gen console to play last gen games. So if there is no BC on a console, no big deal. But if there there is model with it, and a model without, I'm going to get the model with it. Even if the support is less then perfect, I like having it. I don't buy a lot of games (preferance not finance), and I tend to go back and play old games so having BC is worth it to me. Sure I could just keep the old console hooked up, but I like keeping things uncluttered and clean looking.

03-12-2009, 01:41 PM
Hey Cheapy 'n Wombat,
I know you shared your opinion about backwards compatibility being featured in this generations consoles, but you didn't really elaborate on anything for the next-generation. Personally I think backwards compatibility will be much bigger for next generation consoles. The reason being achievements and trophies, I think people would have more incentive to play older generation titles if they actually see something come of it.
Also a while back on XboxEvolved.com(you can choose to give them a shout-out or not) there was a rumor that the Xbox 360 would feature some games in the near future that would be forward compatible. The forward compatible games would have improved features exclusive to the new console i.e. graphics and possible gameplay changes. If backward compatibility didn't make you want to play a last generations games perhaps forward compatibility would.
I would love to hear both of your opinions on this and thanks.

Furious gamer looks awesome, if I had an iPhone I would pick it up in a second. Might be getting one next month if my job cancel our phone plans. Are there other Gaming related iphone apps? not games, for example keeping track of Xbox live or Halo 3 stats...
....or even better a CAG price tracker app for when I go to the store, it can tell me if it is priced better somewhere else or even better I can scan the bar code and find the best price.

Cheapy what's up with the "bipolar" love-hate relationship with the PS3. One second you are all lovin' on the PS3 & then the next you have to point out all of its flaws. Are you just trying to stay netural or do you actually feel this way about the PS3?

For the NXE slowness: You can try the cache-clear (x x lb rb x x at system-settings->memory->hard drive), which will "Do Maintenance" on your harddrive (clearing all your game updates, so you have to re-download them), but it is reported that this speed up your system. Don't take my word for it, google +"x x lb rb x x" +nxe +speed.

originally BC was important to me...but then I realized I have a 60gb ps3, but I can't say I've played any previous gen games on a current system. so yeah wombat's statement that game companies really downplayed the ability to play older games is spot on.

Im a long time listener to the cagcast and yes its getting better every week (IMO). Its been about a year now that I have started to look regularly at the deals and trading forums.
Im from Canada and I want to remind to all the CAG listeners who happen to be from Canada to visit the forums to look for deals AND to post what they want or can offer for trades. The Canadian section of the forums seem to a lot less users than how many Canucks follow the weekly podcast...

A "woman's steak"? Dude, it's nothing more than a slab of meat intended for consumption. I don't think a steak can be womanly, by definition. You could put it on a doily and top it with glitter and rainbows and it's still an oozing hunk of meat.

And now Cheapy knows why the phrase "jumping the shark" has been replaced with "nuking the fridge."
Hey, that's what this podcast should have been called!
No it hasn't. That phrase is retarded, and only a very small minority of internet people actually use it.

Cheapy, I don't think that Madworld would be nearly as fun with a normal controller.
After playing the game the Wii controls work really well, especially for grabbing an enemy and throwing them into spikes. I think that game would get boring quick if you were playing in on the 360 or PS3. The Wii interactivity really makes the game more fun. Even though there are times where the game will ask to you violently to shake the controllers you can just lightly shake them and get the same effect. The commentary is absurd and over the top and the music really fits with the game. Ridiculous hip hop songs are redicilous.

I didn't think any of the demos were that fun. Definitely not showing signs of a game I need to buy.
And I disagree with the "woman's steak" cause I've had some really great steak that didn't have bones, and they tasted a lot better than some of Wombat's so-called "man's steak"
And I think the lag you guys are getting from the Xbox Experience is probably due to a high number of friends. I don't have that many friends (like 5 or so) on Live, so it would make sense that I'm not lagging.

Great show guys! Love the CAGCast! Here is my opinion on the PSP part of the show.
I had a Nintedo DS lite before and I did not like it so I got a PSP 2000 instead. I got the Daxter Bundle last year and I loved it. I mainly bought it because I wanted a MP3 player and a Portable PlayStation that could play downloaded PSone games from PSN and good ports of PS2 games like GTA, Hot Shots, and God of War. I love it and still use it to this day.
The only problem I had with the PSP was UMD. UMD was both a great and horrible idea. It was able to store a lot of data but you had the problems of movable parts in a portable console, fragile discs, and long load times. I am hoping if Sony releases a new PSP it uses regular Memory Sticks for games instead of UMDs and a secondary slot for a Pro Duo Memory Stick so I can put downloadable games on that (I dont like built in memory). However if Sony makes a new PSP without a UMD drive I would hope PSP 2 would be able to play UMD games by a download service from Sony or a separate UMD drive hooked up by USB.

Wombat...must say that the new accent is wonderful and very funny. The new ideas are great and your additional input really adds to the show. Also, if you read the Wanted graphic novel, you really should check out the movie. Finally, your fans want your input on the Watchmen movie, I know times may be hard, but you gotta find time to check it out so you can give the fans your insight.

the only good thing about indy 4 was that it ended. shia ruined the film and if they wanted to cast him better he should have been cast as a nerd who slowly break out of his shell to become more like indy which im glad they didnt because now he wont be in any other indy films......i hope.
hollywood for some weird reason has alot riding on him. theyve been trying to push him as a future cross genre star i guess since he lucked out with that holes film but hes not nor will he ever be a god enough actor to be able to fill those kinds of roles properly. thats why when someone says a movie was horrible they should say it swung with monkeys.
both indy 4 and transformers were monumental turds and its impossible to say which is worse.
and dont worry about seeing walle anytime soon. its probably the most formulaic and predictable of pixar films. you know whats going to happen less than halfway through it and though its a good film the "message" within it is obvious and the climax was a letdown.

Great show, but it seems that Cheapy can't stop throwing that "internet space pimp" title all over every episode in recent weeks. It's definitely funny, but you don't want to sound too full of yourself is all. CAG definitely needs a few more members for you to properly receive that name. Keep up the good work as always.
And Wombat, I almost always prefer a nice bone in my steak much like you but that doesn't mean that boneless steaks are only for those with a weak stomach. Wombat, you could get a good look at a T-bone by sticking your head up a bull's ass, but I'd rather take the butcher's word for it.

I like the idea of using twitter during the show to ask a question to the cags or their opinion of an outline topic. Just have a answer or two queued while the cohost is ranting. Great show, very entertaining! Some personal opinions:
1- I 'm sure most of handheld owners don't want to play "normal console" games on their system, only the more hardcore gamers, even though I for one really enjoyed them in my DS before I sold it;
2- Some games do allow for podcast listening, like Fighting games, most XBLA Games, Racing games and pretty much any game that requires grinding, either by desing or for achievements. But, I can see how Cheapy wouldn't be very interested in those :p. But yes, for other games, it's hard to pay attention to the show and pay attention to the game;
3- I want to participate in the contest!!
4- I also learned about CAG through the podcast... I was browsing the iTunes podcast library and decided to give you guys a chance. After a few episodes, I was hooked! So much that I decided to lurk the CagForums and finally growed the nerve to start posting on the forums. What a great move on my part if I can say that lol.
That's it for the moment, CAGcast and CAGforeplay in the same week makes for a great week!

Great show, guys.
I do have a comment about Cheapy's take on the Legends of Wrestlemania demo, though. While at first I didn't enjoy the new mechanics and controls, after a few plays it started to click in. You get a feel of things and how to progress after a while, you learn how to pull off certain chains and moves. Before getting the hang of that, I was getting my ass handed to myself regularly. I understand that the real-time events (button prompts) break the flow of the game a bit. However, I do feel that there is a strong chance that this game could be a blast to play against human opponents. And if you think the character models were too big, I've got three words for you: Legends. Of. Wrestling. THAT game had ricockulous character models.
As for TNA Impact: Yeah, the speed of the game is good. It's a good arcade-styled wrestler. Too bad it lacks character, though. Was still a good snag when I got it for $10.

The Mythbusters should do an episode that focuses on the new Indiana Jones movie.
I remember when Penny Arcade nearly killed CAG when some deal broke here and they linked to it on the front page, which was back in the days of weak, puny CAG servers.
The Wheelman demo was pretty cool since it's like a mix of Burnout and Stranglehold.
I got the PSP Media Manager for free, so I'm not sure why you guys couldn't do so, too. I haven't used it yet because I download most of my content over RSS feeds.
Why would the PSP use an SD card versus the memory sticks that it's been using so far, especially since you'd be mucking with BC games and content transfers.
Two buttons for House of the Dead: Overkill (B to shoot and A to reload).

Cheapy, I agree that the mac mini is really cool and i also perfer I-tunes over going out and getting free music online.
TiE23
03-12-2009, 07:33 PM
I think the problem here is that you're not actually buying the music and it's not actually yours (outside of those 10 "free" songs). You're just leasing it until you discontinue your subscription or Microsoft stops the service/store. Once you stop subscribing, you lose all of that music.
$15 a month is basically "paying" for the right to try before you buy, but that ability already exists if you're willing to bend the law.
Well, yeah, there are things to consider. You can always just get it 'the other way' or actually purchase anything left over when you end your subscription. So meh. I mean, not everything I've downloaded I've loved, so I don't have to live with albums I paid full price for that I never want to listen to. And you can get some random stuff that you couldn't get on torrents. Oh No's Oxperiments and Billy Cobham Hi-Five are some random ones I found on Zune.

The Riddick demo actually featured a Dark Athena portion of the game. I have to agree that I wasn't all that impressed with it even though I was really into Butcher Bay too. I think the demo didn't really show part of what made Riddick cool, at least in my opinion. The demo seemed to focus on gunfights instead of stealth and interacting with characters.

Hey, cheapy. I just wanted to mention the part in your podcast where the poster mentioned listening to podcasts in monotonous games. I think he could have worded his question better as I also listen to podcasts like yours, foreplay, and you look nice today (thanks for telling me about those guys, wombat) when playing more time-consuming parts in games like Oblivion for instance. Great music, but after awhile it made my ears bleed from overuse so I had to turn the music off and start listening to something else. Doesn't mean it's a monotonous game, just had to find another way to play an otherwise enjoyable game with a new form of ear music.

I have to agree about KZ2. The MP features or lack there of (ie party system, friend invites, and etc) kills the game. I still dont understand why after so many good examples in other games devs still cant get this right.
For Wombats comment about the password lock for lobbys on xbox. Its not there because its not necessary on xbox per se. Since you can have private slots open only to your friends. This requires people to be on your friend list though which is a whole different problem though since xbl has the friends limit.

In response to the discussion about backwards compatibility...
I feel that it depends on the console. The PS2 had a lot of great games worth going back to so the PS3 having BC was defnitely called for. The Xbox not so much. The only game that got played with 360 backwards compatibility was Halo 2 and when Halo 3 came out Halo 2 was essential done.
The way the current generation is going backwards compatibility in a sense will be very important. Not so much with software on disc but with digital content. When Rock Band hits the next generation of consoles what will I do with my current batch of songs that has become a massive investment? Same goes with XBLA games. I don't want this stuff to be totally null and void when the next batch of consoles hit.

Awesome show, i dont get to listen to too many podcasts now because i dont have a job, but i had to get out and about today, so i drove around austin looking for a best buy and listened to the show. I have to agree with cheapy about the new Wrestling legends game. I downloaded the demo with low expectations from the show and i have to agree with everything he said. The camera is way to close, the controls being simple are just too hard to grasp for me. i would have much rather had an old port of the wrestlefest arcade game. This is such a dissipointment because i was thinking about picking this game up, but not so much now.
As for the xbox vista slowing down, i did get that problem before i moved, i didnt have many friends on live but it still took 1-2 mins to boot those avatars up, since i have moved to austin, the list has shown within a noticeable difference. i am not sure exactly what is happenin there.
i also dont even think about backwards compatiablity, its really a non issue for me now. i thought when i first got my 360 i would be playing tons of my origianl xbox games, i havent put any of them in the system since i didnt need to play halo2 on it. better games have just been coming out, and while i am happy its there, if it wasnt, i wouldnt notice
keep up the good shows guys :-)

Another incredibly enjoyable show guys. I find fake accents far more amusing then any reasonable individual should...real accents aren't bad either. Anyway Wombat unfortunately was right on about the RE 5 dlc...though whether it's already on the disc or not it's totally obvious that this content has been completed for quite some time. Regardless of the fact it's only going to cost five dollars it's still completely shameless on Capcom's part and I have no plans to purchase it at any price.
Oh and one thing that I can always be certain of on the internet is people always wondering if my username killthemall stands for kill the mall or kill them all. I was very amused to see that minor discussion take place when you read my comment in the cagcast.
Just to clarify when I came up with that handle 5-6 odd years ago I did in fact intend it to stand for kill them all. Not because of love for any Metallica album. Simply because it has and continues to be a phrase I hear exclaimed by the villain in just about any action/war flick and definitely a ton of games I've played.
I liked the phrase so I decided to use it as something of a permanent username across the internet. Funny thing is just about everyone I encounter thinks it stands for Kill the Mall. So I grew attached to that and these days my friends on LIVE mainly refer to me as Mall or KTM.

Thanks for giving props to HotD: Overkill! That game is 20 types of awesome and anyone looking for a "mature" game on the Wii should try it. I just wish I had gotten the comic for preordering at GameStop, but apparently they "ran out" when my gf went to pick it up. Awesome show, I will definitely have to checkout House of the Dead: Overkill, my wii could use a dusting off. Also the fact that anyone would try to tax violence in games is ridiculous. Politicians should be focused on going after all the people who issued bad loans, sold insurance of those bad loans, and passed it all off as AAA investments, not to mention all the other real problems in the world. Maybe if they used the tax to feed starving children, I would feel a little better about it.

Glad you finally watched the latest Indy movie Cheapy. I guess going into it with such low expectations it was easier for you to shrug it off. I had very high hopes when I went to see it (midnight showing) and nearly left the theater. There was a dude dressed as Indy watching the movie, and after it was over he took his hat off and tried to be super inconspicuous as he walked to his car. Dude must have felt like the biggest tool with his whip...
I do have to agree with you 100% on the end, I COMPLETELY thought that Mutt was going to pick up the hat at which point I was going to go ballistic. The only saving grace of that movie was that it didn't go down like that, and Indy picked up his hat at the end.
Still, giant steaming pile of shaq-fu.

Well, I had a comment about the Riddick demo. This is a prime example of the "bad demo" situation (just like Dead Space.) Throwing someone right into combat, especially stealth combat without any clue what to do really makes the demo poor. The dead space demo did the same thing, they threw you into heavy combat without and idea how to defeat the monsters.
I found that after I "remembered" how to fight in Butcher Bay, I went back and had much more fun with the new Riddick demo the second time.

Just wrapped up listening to the podcast, and I have to agree with a few things. Like the listening to podcasts, and not even being able to function without my full attention. After listening to where you guys were talking about the Resident evil mulitplayer, and it being announced with a price tag for maybe an unlock key? Or is this a dlc for the coming weeks? Cheapy you need to stand up with your open letter to capcom to stop this ridiculousness.
Other than that I just enjoyed it, and have been since you guys were talking about MGS4 back in June when I started listening. Also need to play with you sometime again cheapy on killzone, and also it was great having the game night wombat. Just have to ensure that cheapy gets in the room first I suppose before all the CAGs fill it up first.

Well Wombat called it, $5 for the versus mode on RE5, which is probably already on the disc. I think that it is despicable to charge for content that should be part of the game. What next, start charging to unlock the ability to use weapons in a FPS? I don't care if the versus gameplay is as good as Yahtzee's infamous triple-cunted hooker (Zero Punctuation, look it up if you don't know) they aren't getting my money.

I absolutely appreciate backwards compatibility. I bought a 360 after not owning an Xbox, and played through Halo 1 and 2 on it, as well as Psychonauts - games I wouldn't have played if the functionality wasn't there because I had a PS2 the previous generation.
Now that I have a PS3, it really fucking irks me that if I want to play Shadow of the Colossus again or, even worse, play through the MGS series in preparation for MGS4, I have to hook up a whole other system. It always astounds me that they aren't including the feature as standard in either machine - it's super cheap technology.

I think it's always nice to have backwards compatibility, but that is not a sellpoint for the majority of people IMO. While I did enjoy playing some Gamecube games on my Wii, I bought it for playing Wii games. The same goes to my Xbox 360: I bought for the new games coming out, even though I could play old Xbox games on it, I don't really have the time with the huge amount of games to play.
So, just like Cheapy said, from a business point of view, there's really no reason to put it there, unless it costs nothing to implement. It's almost like buying a Blu-Ray player that has a VHS tape reader with it... sure, some people would appreciate that, but most people wouldn't care. Anyway, just my two cents.

Hey Cheapy & Wombat,
I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I have to agree with Wombat when it comes to games that I'm looking for on my PSP. It's real simple, when I'm traveling I turn to my PSP for home-console-esque experiences on the go, when I'm taking a crap I use my DS for 'stop and plop' gaming. I would most certainly prefer a Resistance type game than Puzzle Quest 12 as Wombat put it.
It's obvious from your conversation though that neither of you have fired up your PSPs in some time. Someone at Sony is paying attention to Apple's success with the iPod and iTunes and slowly trying to follow the example they've set. The PSN store on the PC is now intertwined with Sony's Media Manager software which they do offer a free version of. It's no iTunes yet, but Sony certainly is trying.
There is also the PSP store which you can access directly from the PSP's menu. This is huge for someone like me who travels a lot and doesn't necessarily always have a computer handy. If a new game hits the PSN store I can grab it from any WiFi hotspot. Slowly we are starting to see more and more retail PSP games hitting the PSN store for download as well - Patapon 2 just came out in the UK as both a retail and downloadable version. And running games directly from the memory stick does improve the load times somewhat.
Cheapy, unlike the 360's HDD the memory sticks are now relatively inexpensive, and at least you have a couple of options (Sony Brand, Sandisk).
I want to also call Wombat out on his comment that you can't play games properly because there is only one analog stick. Which games are you referring to? I'd like to hear you name some.
There are plenty of extremely creative developers that have crafted competent controls within the limitations of the PSP. While I do hope Sony includes a second analog nubbin on a PSP2, there are plenty of games for the current PSP that control just fine.

Wombat,as per the complaint about the person who was on your team shooting you, well he could have been ranked high enough to have the saboteur class. The only way to tell is that the target will be red instead of green when on the player.I play as the saboteur sometimes but I am more of the engineer/sniper type.

Not only SotC but what about all the people who wait until games are super inexpensive to buy them, this is Cheapassgamer after all. Those people buy some games a generation late and they still might have a current generation console, are they suppose to have 5+ concoles sitting under or around their TVs?
Also what about people with giant backlogs. The Playstation 1 and 2 had a large amount of games that people wanted to play, so many so that it created a super backlog for alot of people. What are the people who are still working through some Playstation 2 games suppose to do?

I have only had once instance when I wished I had BC on my PS3.I bought Persona 4 and it id not work on my PS2,bought another copy and same thing happened.Apparently, for whatever reason, certain PS2 games do not play on the PS2...bunch of shit.
also,a bonus to K2 being on PS3 is that there are not nearly as many kids shouting and complaining. The thing is that parents are more apt to buy their children a $199 machine as oppose to a $399 machine, let alone they would actually know to buy a bluetooth headset for it.Whereas the XBox comes with the headset. That is one plus.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,
I think a live podcast at E3 would be a great idea. Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht from the Diggnation podcast have done live shows for a while now and they seem to be a lot of fun for all. And Cheapy, this could even be the venue for you to launch your mini video segments that you have talked about for a while now. As always I loved the show this week!

Yeah, but you know that's not the type of "malt liquor" that the e-mail question was referring to.
The only way to drink malt liquor is from a 4-0 in a brown paper bag. That's the $1.59 shit that everyone is most familiar with. I prefer OE. :D
Also, props to anyone who does listen to music or podcasts while gaming. I personally cannot do anything else while I'm trying to get through a game. It would just be background noise to me.

One suggestion though: how about trying to do a game segment like you did with "DS game or porno" each episode. (or every couple episodes or something). It changes things up a little bit and keeps things fresh.

Good show. Wombats undertones of 'I could be fucked' with a painful yet sad reminder of the world in which we find ourselves. Best of luck on keeping the gay job.
Personally, I really liked Indiana Jones 4. I find it funny (and reflective of our religious bias) that people will accept the premise of Raiders and Indy 3 as perfectly okay but somehow “Aliens” are out of line. C’mon.
A thousand year old Knight guarding the cup of Christ- “That’s Cool”
An alien skull –“That’s bullshit”
(for the record there is about the same amount of historical record for both)
also Patcher McDonald’s analogy was dumb and I am surprise you both agreed so much. McDonald’s is as much about convenience and price as comfort. None of that applies to the Wii

Might I mention, now that I am slightly more interesting, having been quoted on the Cagcast, that I'm happy that Cheapy never settled on a theme song. I find it interesting that Japan marks up games based on popularity, such as Resident Evil 5 being $75-80. Being a CAG, I know I would never purchase a game even in a series I love for $75 retail. Part of being cheap is not supporting mark ups based on principle. I do that good.

Great Episode, guys! I'm glad Cheapy finally saw Indy 4 and can now put it behind him. I remember how I felt when I saw it only a few months ago. I went in knowing little to nothing, and expecting the same (considering the writing), but I still couldn't help feeling as though this movie was more an opportunity squandered than a genuine sequel.
I'm also with Wombat on Braid. In fact, his logic tends to be how I base my decisions on what I will or will not buy from XBLA. If you check my gamertags you will see that I have purchased no XBLA games, mostly because the games I would like to play cost more than I am willing to pay. Not to mention the backlog that I too have, such as unplayed copies of Okami and God of War 2, among others. For my $10-$20, XBLA would have to offer better than what I have seen. I understand Cheapy said that the demo doesn't really show what the game has to offer, but it still feels like a bad investment for me. Money is tight, time is precious, and I'd rather be finally breaking into my copy of Bioshock than paying $15 for a game like Braid or the utterly busted (but I hear finally fixed) Castle Crashers.
rx111
03-13-2009, 10:28 PM
XBLA games like Braid at $10 are completely worth it. So I'm sitting at home bored on a rainy Friday night. I could either spend $5 in gas going to the store to buy a game plus the cost of a game, or spend $10 dollars to instantly get a great game like Braid. Hell, its $10 to rent a game from Blockbuster.
I agree with Wombat that XBLA games don't compare to full games on clearance, but in order to get Star Wars:TFU for $15 I would have to get on gamefly, buy it, and wait 4 business days to receive the game. XBLA is for those times when you need something new to play right now.

After all, Wombat could get a good look at a T-bone by sticking his head up a bull's ass, but I'd rather take the butcher's word for it.

Cheapy, I cannot agree with you more about this whole political obsession with violent video games. I am so sick of soccer mom sally's blaming the video game industry for their craptastic parenting, and the politicians eating this garbage up like a starving fat kid with cake in front of him just to be elected again. This is a complete waste of time and resources as we are in the worst recession the U.S has ever been in, and it just seems like a giant covor up for people who have no idea how they will fix the bigger issues, so instead they hide their failure with meaningless bull.

I can completely understand the confusion with the map at first, it took me a little while to understand that they were including which subways you need to go through in the directions, but I am glad to see that Wombat is willing to stick with a game and learn how to enjoy it.

You have taken that diagram from Wikipedia which also says the Northern Irish are Britons. That diagram means nothing as Britons are still so if it is the British Isles or Great Britain with the exemption of the Republic of Ireland. Guys, I love the CAGcast. I listened to about 30 shows before I started visiting the site, even though I heard of the site before I heard of the show. Long story. I visit the site 'cuz of Wombat's "contributions" to the CAGcast. I wanted to say that when guys talked about Braid not being worth $15. I agreed with both of you in a way. I bought it because of all the stellar reviews that game sites gave it. But I don't think it's worth the price of admission. On the otherhand, I haven't come close to finishing it. So maybe I'd like it much more if I had the time or patience to play it all the way through. Until then I wish I had waited to buy it on sale because I haven't played it much to this point anyway.
I think that the problems with the Xbox guide being slow may come down to whether or not your account migrated from an original Xbox or started with the Xbox 360. I have nearly 100 friends on my friends list and my account started on Xbox and I have always seen it slow. I don't know but it just a hypothesis.

Hey Wombat,
I think the problem with indy IV is that we've all grown older. I personally have the same thoughts as you about the new indy compared to the old ones. Little kids today this the new indy is awesome. This is what I'm hearing from my friends kids.
Staying alive in a fridge from atomic blast is the same difference as the ark melting some evil nazis face. Its just that as kids we believed it and thought it was awesome, where as now, surviving a nuclear bomb in a fridge is just stupid. But I bet if we were kids and watched the new one, it would be super cool.
Just my theory anyway.

I disagree on your comparison. Sure the ark's power is not realism, but it's supposed to be magical/mystical/whatever. The fridge is not magical. It's just a fridge. "Behold the power of the almighty" holds a little more weight than "behold the power of lead".
Unquestionably though, as Cheapy said, the only good part was the very last scene with the hat.

I have to say I am really intrigued by the rumors of this new PSP4K. I would really like to see a device that is completely flashed based memory, no more UMD. What would really make this device a killer device would be to include a touch screen and a QWERTY keyboard. This would allow the device to be a much better web machine then the iPhone. Also SONY should spend a little time with the music playing software in the PSP, really make the user experince comparable to the iPod and ZUNE. Now the down side for me is I have had a PSP since launch, and have a library of about 15 games for the PSP. So now what am I suppose to do with all my UMDs, if the device is completely flash base. My idea would be that Sony sponsors a trade in program where you mail your UMDs into SONY and they send you codes to download those games from the PSN store. This would benefit SONY and its developers in two ways. First it would generate sales from loyal long time users such as me to buy a new PSP4K. Second it would then take a bunch of UMDs out of circulation, then those UMDs are not showing up at Gamestop and being resold over and over again helping developers of the PSP platform.
By the way Cheapy, the new PSN Store on the PSP is really nice you don’t need a computer you can attach directly to the PSN store and download games, demos, and video straight to the device without the need to attach it to the computer. It looks just like the PSN store on the PS3. Although I will say the connection speed is super slow just like the PS3 store.
Wombat, I am curious, you say that you like to purchase music through legal means to help support the artists. But everyone knows that very little of the money from CD & online sales goes to the actual artists, yet you seem to have no such loyalties to game developers as you routinely purchase used games and sell used games. Kind of thinking there is a double standard here, care to share your thoughts?

I absolutely appreciate backwards compatibility. I bought a 360 after not owning an Xbox, and played through Halo 1 and 2 on it, as well as Psychonauts - games I wouldn't have played if the functionality wasn't there because I had a PS2 the previous generation.
Now that I have a PS3, it really fucking irks me that if I want to play Shadow of the Colossus again or, even worse, play through the MGS series in preparation for MGS4, I have to hook up a whole other system. It always astounds me that they aren't including the feature as standard in either machine - it's super cheap technology.
Backwards compatibility is good. Obviously, you are a later adopter of the PS3 since you can not play the PS2 games. I enjoyed the full backwards compatibility for the launch of the 20 and 60 gig PS3. What I did not like was the emulated piece of garbage the 360 offered. Sure you can not tell the difference, but having to wait several months for them to update it to get more titles on is a pain. When Sony did that, it only irked me more as a consumer. Would Sony have done that if Microsoft had the built in drive to play all X-Box games? Does Microsoft even update there BC list anymore? Even on the DSi there is no more backwards compatibility. It seems as though that BC is now a dying format and it is not good for the consumer. After all, why would a company want to support a system they no longer make games for. The only company that sems to be able to profit off of BC would be used game stores since Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo no longer sell new older gen games and are primarly focusing on the current generation.

On having Major Nelson on another CAGcast:
You should ask him why the NXE is so freakin' slow!
While I admit that I do listen to Major Nelson most weeks, I cannot believe that Microsoft lets such a nerd be the "mouth" of Microsoft. I am almost proud of them for not having some d-bag do a hipster show or some hot chick do a "why xbox is cool" show.
Anyway, great show Cheapy and Wombat.

It's funny, I listened to the podcast while I was at work trying to put out a few fires. The only things I remember are:
Wombat mentioning his grocery shopping
Both Wombat and Cheapy saying that they can't listen to podcasts while doing other things, as they lose track of what's going on...
And yeah, I lost track of what was going on in the show. Alas.
Silly work.

Cheapy and Wombat,
I think one of the main reasons your show doesn't have the number of listeners that Rebel FM, etc do is because you guys dont play games! In almost every episode each of you only play one real game (not counting DLC or demos). Pick up a few games and play them an hour or so each and post your thoughts as you progress through the game. People listen to podcasts to hear YOUR thoughts on games not just get news they can read at Kotaku in 5 minutes. Also, why don't you guys bring back the "Old Game You Should Pick Up for Cheap" segment? That was an awesome piece for CAGs. You could also each pick up a game for an hour or two a week from the previous generation of consoles that you never got around to finishing. Keeping a consistant realease of podcasts without skipping weeks would also help too. Even a quick 30 minute show would be fine. I'll always be a listener of the CAGcast and keep up the great show!

Nice show guys.
I agree that Sony should go the UMD-less route for the PSP2. Just add another analog nub, make the wireless features robust, and stuff as much HDD capacity as you can it it. Sony really needs to embrace the Steam/iTunes/whatever model of DL-only for their games. Or at least make it an option if they don't want to screw over retail stores.
From what I hear, a lot of games work (or at least get some kind of attention) on the iPhone because they're cheap; people are receptive to these micro-games because their $1-$2. I don't see why Sony can't set something up that's similar where devs can create these small titles and sell them on the cheap. That way, they'd have the best of both worlds: cheap, micro-games for $1 - $5, and fuller games that cost $20 - $30.

I have to disagree with the Indy 4 talk......the worst part of that movie is Karen Allen! Why is that woman smileing from ear to ear in every scene???
Oh man, you just reminded me of another thing I hated about Indy 4
When she drives the jeep off the cliff only to be saved by a tree before being dumped into a water she looks like she's completely high, or just totally deranged. Not sure what she was going for with that look, but SHE JUST DROVE OFF A CLIFF, you think she'd be the slightest bit concerned.
HAHAHA, see Cheapy? we told you Indy IV was shit. thanks for agreeing with us. :)

Cheapy,
I agree with you that there are little opportunities for listening to a podcast, and I also can't listen to someone talking while I'm doing something else. But podcast listening while playing games can work, if you play the right games. Listening while playing a mindless online game isn't hard at all. For example, I was listening to this podcast as I played Halo 3 online, no sweat. GoW, CoD, and games like castle crashers or geometry wars are also good games to play while listening.

I do the exact same thing as Cheapy with [not] listening to something and playing with my iphone. At work I'll have some spare time and start checking my e-mail and twitter on the iphone and completely miss everything said on whatever I'm listening to on my ipod. Then I'm like "oh yeah!" and have to rewind. I pretty much zone out whenever I focus on something, so playing games and listening to podcasts would be impossible for me also. At work with 10 hours to kill, that's a whole other story.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,
I have to agree that it seems, to me, like backwards compatibility isn't that big a deal, and I think its because this gens Sony and Microsoft consoles made the jump to HD, making older PS2 games and Xbox originals look like crap no matter how much you upscale it.
I also think the price tag on this gens' consoles keep people from playing last gen games because who wants to spend $400 on a console and play LAST-gen games on it?!? To me, that's like buying a brand new car and dropping an old engine into it.
I'm not totally against backwards compatibility, but I once found myself playing a $10 PS2 game on my $500 PS3 and thought, did I not buy a PS3 to play PS3 GAMES?!?

PS. Arrr, this show need more Jewbeard, says I.

In regards to Killzone 2 and password protecting rooms, I do agree that it's a great feature and is particularly great for setting up large rooms, however, I think when it comes to casual gaming and seeing a few friends online, it would require you to message them all anyways to tell them the password in the first place. It's either that or go outside the means of the console to tell them.
Where as the Xbox has the advantage of allowing game invites directly as Cheapy said and furthermore with the new party system, you can seemlessly never interrupt a conversation with some friends. It's not to say Live is perfect, far from that, but it manages to combine many useful features that are integrated into most every Live enabled game.
With that said, if PS3 were to glean some of these features to the PSN, it would be great and make the PS3 a much more enticing alternative to the 360. At that point, the only thing stopping me from getting a PS3 and selling off my 360 would be the 360 exclusive games. My 360 broke recently and is out of warranty so I'm one of many that really want to see the PS3 improve to make it a more enticing option.

I hope the next gen MSFT console keeps BC for 360 games. I've played Halo 2 and Dreamfall on my 360 and it was nice to have the ability to do so.
I missed having the achievement system and the guide available while playing original Xbox games, though. But the next gen console should be building upon those features and so the old 360 games should be compatible with the new infrastructure. I want to be able to transition from the 360 to the new system with my Gamertag seamlessly.
There are a lot of games on the 360 that are going to become classics. It would be sad to see them left behind or brought forward with not 100% compatibility.

Hello, i am new to CAG and I think that is awesome that you have organized this community in which gamers alike can save money on the things they love, especially in the economy's condition. Being the frugal, brilliant (and modest) person that I am, shopping for bargains has always been a second nature to me. I am only 15, though my friends look to me to find the best deals on the interwebs. I will tell them about this site and the wonders it does, because it makes everything easier. Thanks for everything, plus the podcasts are cool too.

I find backwards compatibility to be a very important feature. Being not only a gamer, but also a collector of games, I find myself with an ever growing backlog of games for older systems. Especially once we took the jump to disc based systems that tend to break after time, I am really fond of being able to use my current systems to play my entire collections. Besides, without BC I wouldn't be using my PS3 for much of anything when everything released multiplatform seems to be better on 360.

To be honest, what I'm most irritated about is that Scrabble (and potentially Boggle) are using a US dictionary and aren't available in the UK. I don't agree with all of this, but I will say that sometimes I think you guys feel obligated to talk about news that you really have no interest in. For example, most weeks it sounds like you have to go out of your way to find something to talk about for Nintendo. I would just say skip it in that case.
