I personally don't know of any external exclosures with fans in them but the PS3 hdd's are only 5400 rpms, so they shouldn't get that hot...or will they? I understand that 7200 rpms would get hot in a short amount of time, but who knows about 5400 rpms.

Best route is to buy a hard drive enclosure with a fan, and put a HDD in it.

And this is a very tempting deal. Newegg rocks. Period. Plus I'm sort of hankering to build a NAS...

2.5" HDD enclosures don't come with fans, at least I've never seen them.

3.5" HDD enclosures may or may not come with fans. I recommend any 3.5" HDD enclosure to have a fan, as they do help to cool down the drive. The Antec MX-1 I use with my Tivo Series 3 has a fan, and it's a very good enclosure. One of many with a fan in it.

:D 2.5 HDD enclosure with a fan. (http://www.closeout.com/al-hd-eb-255-u2.html)

Not sure what the point is of that, honestly. I'd just go for a 3.5 enclosure with a fan. Preferably one that was made of aluminum. I'd recommend the one I'm using now but... I took all the labels off at some point, so I can't figure out what kind it is. I've had it for about... five years now. Still going strong.

Yep that should work just fine. As long as it's a 2.5'' (laptop) SATA hard drive that runs at 5400 rpms, then you should be good. Some people say that the 7200 rpm drives are fine, but I disagree because the original hard drives in the PS3 are all 5400 rpms. The bigger rpm means quicker searching, but it also means more heat and instability as well. Just my 2 cents.

I doubt it. I would actually buy an external enclosure for your original PS3 hard drive and then transfer all of your files from the external to the new hard drive in the PS3. You can find an enclosure for $10-$30 and then you'll have an external hard drive as well. That's what most people do anyways, including myself.

You bet! :) Happy to help!

Also, here's a pretty cool video that shows you how to install the new hard drive into the PS3.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-B1mQ21XXLE

Seems easy enough to me.

Once the new hard drive is installed, just turn on the PS3 and it will recognize the new drive and automatically install the PS3 software and applications for you. Once that's done, just plug the external hard drive into the PS3, allow it to recognize the drive, and then you can copy over the entire drive to the new drive.

There is a WD 400 GB 2.5" External HDD. Black color and a bundle which comes with a Corsair Voyager 8 GB flash. With the flash drive $15 rebate and the 10% coupon. It comes out to $60.

Great deal if you're willing to wait for the rebate. In my experience, Corsair always completed my rebates.

Well, you're wrong. This has been disproven time and time again. 7200 RPM hard drives do not generate significantly more heat than 5400 RPM drives. It's nothing but pointless paranoia.

First off, that was a rude post.

Secondly, you're saying that a 7200 rpm hard drive doesn't produce more heat than a 5400 rpm? You're kidding right? No offense dude, but I've been building computers for a long time, have used multiple types of hard drives, and I can tell you that 7200 rpm drives run hotter than 5400 rpm. 5400 rpm drives also tend to have a longer life span because they don't run as fast or as hot. The same goes for the 10,000 rpm raptors and 15,000 rpm drives. The higher the rpm, the hotter it's going to get. It's not science fiction, it's a scientific fact called "friction." It's a physics thing, look it up.

Also, I never said the heat would be "significant." I simply stated that a 7200 rpm drive will produce more heat than a 5400 rpm drive because it spins faster. Don't put words in my mouth.

Last, but certainly not least, a 7200 rpm drive will not produce significantly faster load times in the PS3 either. Sure, it would be nice to have, but in the end, the loading times versus money per faster second ratio doesn't justify the price of most 7200 rpm laptop drives. All I said was that it "could be" faster, but that was my "2 cents." In other words, that's just my opinion. Since the PS3 originally came with a 5400 rpm drive, it would be best to replace it with a 5400 rpm drive. That's called common sense.

Okay, but you're still wrong. I don't think it's rude to point out that you're incorrect and fearmongering.
Yes, they may produce more heat, but not enough to warrant mentioning. Lots of people have used 7200 RPM drives in PS3s with no issues, and you can also test the HDD temps and see that they don't achieve a temperature that would affect their lifespan or the console's. I'm sorry if you don't like me pointing this put, but every time there's a PS3 HDD sale, somebody always brings up this argument, and it's always disproved.

Also the installation and load times of a 7200 vs. a 5400 have been tested, and they do make a difference. For people who'd like shorter times it's worth paying a little more for the faster drive. Larger caches also help, not just the RPMs.

It's not what you said, it's how you said it. Saying that I'm flat out "wrong" is basically saying that I'm presenting opinions as fact, or that my information is based on nothing. Instead of correcting on my "errors" by providing factual information, you only provide more self inflated opinion. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying that my opinions are based on facts.

An example: The cost per gigabyte ratio. I did some research using two 500GB laptop hard drives. This hard drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136314) is the 5400 rpm and this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148374) is the 7200 rpm from newegg.com. I subtracted $10 from the listed price of the hard drives for the special deal that is going on making the 5400 rpm $89.99 with free shipping and no tax, and the 7200 rpm $129.99 with free ship and no tax.

The 5400 rpm costs $0.17 cents per gigabyte while the 7200 rpm costs $0.25 per gigabyte. In other words, the 7200 rpm costs approximately 32% more than the 5400 rpm for the same amount of storage. So for $40 extra, or 32% more money, you're paying for 1800 higher rpms and double the cache. However, the 5400 rpm has a latency of 5.5ms while the 7200 rpm has a latency of 4.17ms. Again, you're paying 32% more money for 1.33ms of latency difference, double the cache, and 1800 higher rpms. Does that seem like a good cost for speeds that are essentially negligible to the naked eye? What will that add up to in terms of 1 hour per gaming? 1, maybe 2, seconds saved per hour of gaming? So instead of paying less for the same amount of storage, you're willing to pay more money for such minutia?

But that's not really the argument here is it? The real argument, or as you're presenting it, is that the 7200 rpm is faster in terms of load times and therefore a better buy, correct? My argument is that the 7200 rpm drive is not OEM via Sony's specifications, may produce more heat, and therefore have negative effects on the system itself. Well let's eliminate the speed of the load times (latency, rpms, and cache) and the heat factor since both are moot arguments in the end since no one can really tell the difference. We are left with the same amount of storage for 32% more money.

Explain to me why, again, the 7200 rpm hard drive is the better option.

No no no, I didn't say that they are a better buy. I'm just arguing that they are a valid and safe option. That's what I disagreed with you about. Yes, I know faster HDDs cost more. It's up to the user whether it's worth the extra money or not.
They're not all hugely expensive, either. Like I said, the one I got was $81 after coupon, and I could have gotten a smaller one (but still much larger than the stock PS3 HDD) for like $60.

Since you insist on facts in addition to opinion, here ya go:

It's ok dude, I understand your pet peeve. I have a pet peeve about rudeness on the internet to people you don't know haha ;). I guess I made your comments into something bigger than they were and that was my bad. I appreciate the articles by the way. The GamePro one was pretty informative, but it also showed that game wise, the 7200 rpm doesn't make much of a difference, which was my point to begin with before it got blown out of proportion. I'm very surprised that there wasn't more heat generated in the PS3 though. Like GP stated, it just shows you how well built the PS3 really is. In my gf's dad's computer, he has a 7200 rpm and a 10,000 rpm and he had to get a couple fans put on the 10k drive because it was getting blistering hot from running all the time.

I guess we just have to agree to disagree here since I still believe that the 5400 rpm is the better option price wise for gamers. However, you've definitely proven that the 7200 rpm does have a more performance over the 5400 rpm, so it's all personal preference basically lol.

Again, thanks for the info!
