Hmm, though that presumes that the followups will be 800 points each. It's possible the subsequent episodes will be add-on "levels" that require the first episode, but cost less. Wishful thinking?

However, I wasn't enamored in the slightest with Final Fantasy X, which is the only FF game I've ever played, so I'm not sure I'm interested anyway. But I have to presume that the old-school FF games have much less obnoxious/dumb/boring story to them, and that has to be considered a plus. Yes?
FFX is nowhere near the best showing of the Final Fantasy series. FFIV is my fav game out of the whole series since I enjoyed it's story the most, but I'll wait to see what the other episodes are priced at :/

I'm hoping for the rest to be priced at 100 pts. although that's pretty doubtful. Even then, if the game length isn't all that long, I might pass anyways.

vherub

looks like the operations guide is saying episodes are 300 each
scratch that-
This is the deal from the operations guide:
800 points main game 1st part
800 points main game ending (17 blocks, release date 9/17)
The core games costs 1600 points

In addition to this two part core game, are 7 Tales.
These 7 tales are all optional sidequests, can be played in any order, or not at all, cost 300 points and are 3-7 blocks in size
the release dates are 6/1, 7/6, 8/3 and then 9/17 for the end
the operations guide gives a brief description of each Tale- remember you can check out the op guide in the wiishop without purchasing a game

So if you bought everything, it is 3700 points
if you just want the main game, it is 1600 points (but you have to wait 3 months for the last chunk).

looks like the operations guide is saying episodes are 300 each
that would mean 3200 total

That's still a lot, but certainly better then 7200! I might dip my toes in the 800 point waters and see if it has anything store for me... eventually.

If enough people say that they've read it somewhere, then it becomes true, even if it isn't.

Go to the FFIV TAY (http://na.square-enix.com/ff4ay/) site, click on tales. 9 different ones are shown. Granted, some of them could be combined, but I'm guessing they won't, since I don't see a reason to list them separately if they were going to be combined.

As is, I will wait and see what the future installments cost, as $72 would be way too much for all of it IMO.

That's actually cheaper than if they released it as a standalone DS game (assuming the $40 price for most Square Enix DS games).

Have any of you tried the game?

Just got done downloading it and I'm about to enjoy some herbal essence and a chicken parm sub before starting. I really, really hope the episodes aren't two hours long with some stupid cliffhanger at the end of each one. Wish me luck.

So are they making any more NES games for Virtua Console? Cause I'm at the point where I would sell all my nes games if I could get them all backwards. It seems like the US has seen little to nothing come out this year from the NES side.

I could probably chop a few games out of my collection, but I'm wondering what's taking Capcom so long to put the other Megaman's out here. Where is Metal Gear and Snake's Revenge? DQ1-4 got ports to the Gameboy/remade but I still want them. TMNT 2 and 3? Also Little Samson and Magic of Schsudadasduad83213 are a must.

Strell shake the 8 ball please.

No update today?

I'm really, really tempted to buy FFIV After, but I don't like the idea of piecemeal games. I want to hold off on the chance that it might see a disc release for $20-30 in a year or so.

With that in mind, for those who bought it - how is it? FFIV was one of my favorite titles, so if it plays like that, I may have to dive in right now.

Even as the words are being spoken, your Harrier warrior is already charging into battle. Toting a huge laser gun under his arm, the Space Harrier can either run along the checkerboard ground or freely fly through the sky. Either way, he's always heading forward into the hostile 3-D world. As you progress, hordes of strange creatures and robots fly toward you. Fast reflexes are required to dodge their incoming fire. Environmental hazards can be a problem, too. Take care not to run into any trees or stone structures. If you need a bit of a morale boost, just defeat a boss, and the narrator will remind you that "you're doing great!"

so i've been away and the thread title isn't changing anymore anything good out recently?

Ok.

Three weeks ago = Memorial Day, so I slacked off.

Two weeks ago = E3, so I slacked off again.

Last week I was just being a jerk.

This week I am still being a jerk.

HOWEVER.

I have been looking for a job recently, and that's taken up the bulk of my time. I ahven't been able to devote much time to CAG lately, and updating this thing hangs like a chore at times.

I was up last night doing assignments for a potential editor type job, so I'm a bit sleepy right now, but I'm going to update these either today or tomorrow. Hopefully today - I don't really have any more plans for the remainder.

So, you know. A heads up, as I have been distracted by something worthwhile lately. I've thought about holding off updates until something "good" comes out, but that's kind of chintzy.

Usually Nintendo of Japan would post next month's VC release list around this time, but it seems that they may hold off on that until next week. They did, however, update the release list (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/vc/lineup.html) with the VC stuff for this week and next week (The dates only list "July 2009," but looking at the lack of anything else on the list, this release is pretty likely).
Next week in VC for Japan:
One of the Tantei Jinguji Saburo (Jake Hunter) games (Famicom)
Marvel Land (Arcade)

The rest of July's VC list for Japan:
Final Fantasy III (Famicom)
Super Punch-Out!! (Super Famicom)
Shinobi (Arcade)

EDIT: Got my dates wrong. Now I'm not sure when three are releasing.
EDIT 2: It turns out that these five games make up July's release list.

Nintendo of Japan controls the VC releases for all regions, so I'd imagine that they finish Japan's list first, and make it for a longer term.

At times when the japanese VC gets things before America and Europe, I really wonder how much a difference there would be in sales if the wii was region free/freed. Maybe not a huge spike but there would be a difference.

Such as beat takeshi's game that out a couple months back. I would've dropped 5 bucks on that easy as many of you guys here would too.

The ff3 famicom is pretty rare since that is one of the main ff games besides for the ds remake here(which i don't own but need to get since it doesn't look bad at all and it's localized). People would nab it up even though they can't read it.

Is it a license thing?? I mean the ps 3 gets a lot of crap for being the third place but at least i can buy a psn card from japan via playasia/ncsx and play Ehrgeiz the jap psn store. I'm pretty sure the money will go to nintendo and the developers. Hell nintendo would have a lot more of my money from the virtual console.

Bit.Trip Core is retro-awesome just like Bit.Trip Beat, but it seems to be about 100x harder. I've played the first level around 5 or 6 times and I am getting killed. I did manage to make it to the first Boss only to fall victim during Wave 3/3.

To play the game you simply push the d-pad in the direction you want to shoot (which puts a transparent white line in that direction) and press the 2 button to shoot when a pixel crosses in front of it. You are limited to up, down, left and right.

The level progression is exactly the same as Beat. If you can keep a combo going, you'll ascend from "Hyper" into "Mega" mode where the graphics get trippier and the music gets a little more complex. If you keep doing well, you'll make it to "Super" mode where stuff starts getting really trippy and it is hard to focus on the pixels you need to shoot. Do badly and you will fall into the "Nether" area where everything goes black and white and monotone beeps play from the Wiimote. You can earn your way back to Hyper (normal) by filling the combo bar back up, but it seems way harder to come back from Nether in Core than it was in Beat.

There is an extra gameplay element that was not in Beat which is a bomb that you can set off with the 1 button which kills all of the dots on the screen. It can be helpful, but if you fall out of the rhythm, you are still going to be screwed when the pixels start coming back again. Oh, and they included a meter to show you how far along you are in the current song as well which was something I was hoping for in a sequel.

The only downside is the d-pad itself can be a little finicky sometimes and in the heat of the battle I have fired in the wrong direction quite a bit. Also, the B button plays extra notes like in Beat, but it is really distracting to your rhythm if you do it - which happens a lot on accident while you are pressing the d-pad. Otherwise it is another solid game from Gaijin, but damn it is hard.

theflicker
07-07-2009, 04:12 PM
Yeah, I definitely find Core harder than Beat. It's very satifying when you get into a rhythm though.

Reminds me quite a bit of Digidrive from bit Generations.

Swords and Soldiers. Simplified side scroller RTS game. Quite amusing.

Bit.Trip Core if you want retro twitch gaming that's difficult.

People seem to speak highly of Let's Catch, but say it is overpriced. I haven't looked into it.

Reasons to save points include the next Bit.Trip game (assuming the series is something you like) and Cave Story, which is a Metroidvania sort of game from what I understand.

Reviews so far have been negative. They say that while it's an interesting concept, it is not executed well. I suggest waiting for reviews on Ant Nation, something that I haven't heard of before, so it may be worth looking out for impressions of it. If neither of those pan out, Pulseman was a well-known import side-scroller for the Genesis, created by GameFreak before they moved on to Pokemon.

I found out about Ant Nation's overall concept from a GameSpot preview:
http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/antnation/news.html?sid=6207857&mode=previews

Essentially it's a combination of a pet sim and a Pikmin-style RTS. You are a human in charge of an ant colony, and it's your job to make your colony the strongest around. You do this by... torturing them to the brink of death... to make them stronger (And using candy to help them regain their strength). The standard ant torture tools are available to you, including, among others, a flame thrower, rocket launcher, earthquake, and a laser. You can then start missions that will generate enemies like spiders and ladybugs for your ants to fight.

Having just finally played and finished My Life as a King a couple weeks ago, I'm really on the fence about My Life as a Darklord. Is it basically the same thing, only on the side of the baddie? I'm not sure I can take another 15 hours of running around my town talking to everyone over and over again.

BlueLobstah

No, think of it as a MLAAK in name only. Instead of a city, you have a tower to defend, so it's more like a type of tower defense game. You build floors and set traps/enemies to defeat the entering adventurers.

So 2 weeks in a row now with nothing new for the Virtual Console, is it fair to say that Nintendo is abandoning the concept, or at the very least rethinking their strategy. It really doesn't make much sense to me that Nintendo never really got behind this concept fully, there's only maybe a dozen or so must-have games that got put out, but other than that it's been nothing more than a steady stream of crap every seek for almost 2 years now. Who in their right mind thought it made sense to release Sega Genesis games for 7 dollars each when you can buy the whole damn collection on PS2 for 10? Or that people would be willing to pay 5 dollars for Commodore 64 games or crap first-gen NES ties? It just angers me that there is an almost endless amount of classics that Nintendo and their third party licensees have in their archives which may never see the light of day again. It seems to me like this would be an instant money maker for Nintendo, but I guess not...

So...that's it? No more Virtual Console? Guess I don't need to worry about stocking up Pepsi codes for downloading stuff for my Wii. Probably shouldn't get my hopes up for Game Boy titles appearing on the DS, either.

Monkey Island is probably fantastic, but I have to decide whether I want to go Wii or PC with the new series.

Is it certain that each chapter will be 1000 points?

All five chapters of the Strongbad game were 1000 points, so I don't see why this would be any different.

I need to look into these pepsi caps. Our vending machines don't seem to have any Pepsi promo about Wii Points and the (Diet) Pepsi I bought at the grocery store didn't seem to have any such promo either.

Speaking of the VC (which I really doubt is dead), I finally bought Lords of Thunder. Fun game, though I suck at horizontal scrolling shooters. It's a good game if you like this sort of thing, though it does take up a lot of space being, originally, a CD game.

Play alone or with up to four players in a two-on-two match. Experience the best moments of both competitive and cooperative play, finding holes in your opponent's defense, then savor the thrill of receiving a pass thrown by your teammate. In addition, game options such as play time, team division and difficulty level can be adjusted.

Do you have what it takes to make it to the top, or will you be crushed?

Those fearing the end of the VC can breath a sigh of relief. Plus isn't Tecmo Bowl suppose to be pretty good? I can't remember if I ever played it way back when or not, but I *definitely* prefer the old 2D football games to the complex 3D ones they put out now. That was when football games were fun, not realistic.

On the DSi front, precipice looks good. I'm glad to see a return to more action-oriented Art Style games. All the other recent ones look like a bore to me, but this one looks like it will be fun. I may have to cash in my remaining points card to get it.

Does anyone know how long the various tower defense games last on WiiWare? While I still have a few things to do on Plants vs Zombies, I'm basically done with it and probably won't play it for awhile, but I'm looking for something similar. I was able to get ~50 hours worth of playing out of it, which is obviously great value for $10, so I'm hoping there is something of similar length on WiiWare. The FFCC My Life stuff looks interesting, though I don't know how long each of those lasts.

My Life as a Dark Lord is an interesting spin on the tower defense genre, so not sure if you would be interested in that.

I downloaded it yesterday on the whim since I didn't have anything better to do. I don't know how long it is, but it appears to have about 5 chapters. I played for about 3 hours and am only on the second chapter, so take that as you will. Some of the DLC may extend the play time, but none of it looked necessary to me unless you wanted to make the game easier to play.

Not really Nintendo's fault, but the Brain Age Express games are really a ripoff when you can find copies of Brain Age 1/2 for $15 or less.

Super Star Wars?! Are you shitting me?! That game is all kinds of awesome. Wow, of all the random games I never expected to see on the VC that series just about tops the list. I realize George Lucas and Co. love the moneyz but I didn't think they'd pursue it by selling their really good SNES action games again. Bring on Super Empire Strikes Back.

Definitely picking up NyxQuest. Been wanting to since I've heard of it.

Which reminds me: What in the hell is taking Cave Story so long? It was supposed to be out in January.

Also funny to see Rock 'n Roll Climber come out, given that we haven't heard anything about it since....it was either E3 or GDC where they last talked about it. I wonder if it's improved? The demo they had going didn't inspire confidence, despite that the premise was hilarious ("Guy climbs to top of mountain and ROKKS THE FUKK OUT!").

Very surprised to see Super Star Wars. I blame the slowing of VC games on the fact that you are required to have it rated by the ESRB, which (from what I know) costs a few thousand bucks. This has caused the VC to not be as profitable as it could be, which is why there's been a slowing of releases. Which makes me wonder if Europe/Japan have the same restriction/obstacle/equivalent?

But seeing a fairly good game that's licensed with something popular? Interesting.

Imma update today. I swear.

This is interesting. (http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=19455) It's basically some sort of small temporary partnership between Nintendo and Lucasarts. It confirms that the remaining two SNES games will be released, along with some other promotional tie-ins, such as the Check Mii Out channel running Star Wars themed contests and so forth.

"Additional classic LucasArts games for Virtual Console will be announced in the future."

I wonder what the chances are that old adventure games will be adapted as Wiiware? Probably not great, actually - I wonder if the size limitation would force voices to be ripped out of a port of, say, Loom.

That's pretty lame. If that's the case, then I can't really blame them for not releasing many VC games anymore. Doesn't sound good for anything that's not super popular. On the plus side, Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior games should still make lots of profit, so I can hope for those! :bouncy:

I believe this is only true if the title doesn't already have an ESRB rating. Of course this really only affects early SNES titles and most games prior to 1994. I'm not 100% sure if the ESRB rating counts if a game has been ported on a different system (say SNES->GBA).

Since we don't know what kind of profits publishers are making on the Virtual Console, it's hard to say whether or not the couple of thousand dollars for a new rating is purely the holdup other than Nintendo's usual shenanigans.

It's not required to get rerated for the VC. There's no law that says games have to be rated by the ESRB. However, Nintendo probably does have a regulation to get everything rerated everytime they release it. See:

If they can't, no need for WiiWare. Just pull an Atari and steal the Wii version of ScummVM. Maniac Mansion would definately be doable, it was ported to NES already, and it's small enough to get recreated for WiiWare.

Two posts recently appeared on Nicalis' blog:
1) Nicalis submitted the manual (http://nicalis.com/blog/2009/08/07/cave-story-online-manual-submitted-for-approval/) to Nintendo. They say that all that's left is to submit the actual game, and fix any bugs if necessary.

They have Super Mario RPG , Breath of Fire 2 , Phantasy Star (2 , 3 and 4 I think). Also some of the Final Fantasy games are supposed to be coming possible soon (based off the fact they have been released elsewhere). If you don't mind more strategy in your RPGs they also have Shining Force and Ogre Battle as well.

Also , while not traditional RPGs , there's also Neutopia 1 and 2 which are kinda like the Zelda series.

I browsed through the catalog pretty quickly, if I'm understanding correctly I need either a classic controller or a gamecube controller to play SNES. For everything else I can use the wiimote sideways.

Too bad the original dragon warrior for NES isn't on VC yet, I got halfway through it on the real system before.

So I guess I'd be better off just getting a wireless wavebird for not only VC games but I can play my gamecube discs with it too.

In my sig, there's a link to the Wii FAQ here that I wrote (along with the help of several CAGs).

There's a graph in there that shows what controller can be used for which VC game system. It's a little out of date (doesn't have C64 or Arcade games, for example), but it should give you a solid heads up.

Let us know if you have further questions.

You also need a Gamecube or Classic Controller to play N64 games. On each game there's a button you can click on that shows you want controllers you can use for the game.

If you're going to play a bunch of SNES games I highly recommend getting a classic controller since the Gamecube controller's button layout is horrible for N64 games.

Good for most games. Action-y games that use all three buttons would be a bit difficult (Earthworm Jim comes to mind).

In related RPG stuff, you might want to look into Final Fantasy IV - The After Years. It's a Wiiware title but it feels exactly like an old, turn-based, 16 bit RPG. I'm like 2 1/2 hours into it and I've loved every minute.

Wonder why the original Dragon Warrior isn't on VC yet.

I don't necessarily know what Enix's take on the matter is, but Square more or less has said in the past that they don't like digital distribution because "it hurts the integrity of the brand," which most people interpret as "we don't like selling a digital copy for five bucks when we can have our interns remake an original and resell it for forty on the DS or PSP."

Enix might think the same way since they are now merged. And they've been remaking a ton of the DW series for the DS, so maybe they agree with the above sentiment.

This is all my own speculation though, so don't take it as factual.

I'm with sooners in that I hope they continue more unreleased games here. I really wish they'd go the extra mile and translate titles that never appeared - there's a good number of RPGs I'd like to play from the SNES days - but I don't have too much hope for that. I'd really like Treasure Hunter G to show up, for example, but my breath will not be held.

Japan already has the first 4 Final Fantasy games (or they will soon as FFIV was listed as releasing this month), so their stance has changed in that regard. The only question is when the hell will they bring those games to the other markets. They've been doing 1 a month since May, so I'm not really sure why we have such a big gap between when Japan gets them and when the rest of the markets get em.

As for Dragon Warrior, I know that series is mega ultra super duper huge over in Japan (is it more popular than FF?), and the NES ones haven't been remade since the GBC days IIRC, so maybe they have some plans to remake those for the DS or something and are holding out.

On another thought, does anybody know how many copies of FFIV:TAY sold? Maybe they haven't released the FF games here yet because TAY sold poorly or something. I haven't bought it yet since I really want to play FFIV again before purchasing it, but I sold my copy of FFIV a long time ago so need it on VC first lol.

This week it's Revenge of Shinobi for VC (Likely with the pink Spider-man boss), and Pop-up Pursuit is a Nintendo-published title in the vein of the Mario Party series, apparently (http://wii.ign.com/articles/990/990880p1.html):

Maybe the people complaining about Revenge of Shinobi not winning the Sega poll for 360 rerelease will be happy now.

It's been a long time since I've pulled down a VC or WiiWare title. I miss the excitement of the old announcements...

Final Fantasy VII is $10 on the PSN Store.

Virtually the entire Square PSX catalog is on the PSN Store in Japan. (Vagrant Story just went up for ¥600 a week or so back).

Also, Square was more than happy to release serial content for Japanese cell phones over recent years (isn't that were FFIV After Years got its start?).

Square sends mixed messages w/ regard to re-releases, what they say publicly, and what they're actually done.

All the evidence points to me sitting on the fence. They say they're against DD, and their track record of overpriced rereleases supports that thesis; but there's just enough DD stuff from them that there are clear contradictions here.

Dragon Warrior is interesting because they appear happy to whore out the name on all sorts of dreadful games that aren't the official canon, yet they seem very protective of the actual main series titles.

I'm sorta kinda interested in Pop-up pursuit , based on videos I've seen of the game. Waiting on some solid reviews though before I drop points on it though.

Since I own most of the ports/remakes of the various FF/DQ games already , about the only one I would be sorta interested in buying on the VC would be FF4 , if only to play the infamous Easy type version again. PSN releases are a different story , since I wouldn't be against replacing my hard copies for cheaper digital copies.

I wonder if , assuming they re-release FF6 on the VC , whether the VC version of it would still include the infamous ultimate master/kill your save file glitch?

I'm still waiting on FF1 and FF4 to be released on the VC here like they said. I'm surprised to see at least 1 not being released yet.

Pilotwings is cool, but I don't have much desire to play Pilotwings.

I had an extra 600 points lying around so I decided to try Neutopia. It's not a bad game but it is trying too hard to mimic Zelda, and when it tries something different it doesn't do it as well as it should. I still like the game though and for a Zelda knockoff it is pretty good.

The flight games in WiiSports Resort are such a tease for PilotWings.

Got around to finishing Nyx Quest: Kindred Spirits last night. I didn't complete it 100%, but it's still a pretty short game (< 3 hours). If you liked Lost Winds, you should pick this up.

It's a little bit different than Lost Winds, but it's a pretty solid platformer, somewhat of a rarity these days.

Well that's just it , I've never played the original Pilotwings , but have played and enjoyed Pilotwings 64. So it's not that I'm not excited for it , just not as excited as I would be if I had previous experience to go by. If that makes any sense.

For me it has been too fucking long. I was interested in it a year ago but now that all they do is release crap on the shop channel, I am really not interested anymore.
