There are many other games I'm waiting for as well, including some Japan only titles.
I am dying to play Wrecking Crew '98 and Neo Mr. Do!... an easy release and a challenging one, but two that I'm sure others would enjoy also.

There's just nothing to care about anymore.
I just hope that we can hope 3DSware (or whatever it will be called) won't be so abysmal, collectively. Looking back, I'm not even sure 10% of all released DSiWare deserves a second glance.

I said it with the GameCube and I think it's even more obvious with Wii and VC:
Nintendo could/should release the arcade versions of their games (Donkey Kong, Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros, etc.). It seems like a no brainer.
Nope they're still sitting on it after 25+ years.
Stupid thing: I'm a sucker for the old arcade games on every platform. I couldn't tell you how many times I've bought Pac Man.

Stupid thing: I'm a sucker for the old arcade games on every platform. I couldn't tell you how many times I've bought Pac Man.
And because people like you and me keep rebuying classics each time they're re-released, the giants hold onto their properties.
Still, at the same time, the argument proves that people do buy properties again and again. How many times has Final Fantasy (pick a number) been released on different platforms and sold well? The same is also true for Mario.
Usually, I think it's licensing issues that get in the way. Also, it seems the popularity of Nintendo's Virtual Console/DSiWare shop doesn't seem very high, so likely, the returns aren't worth the cost of investment in revisiting the property on Nintendo's consoles.

I think Apple's App Store has proven that people will buy exactly the sort of thing that DSiWare/Virtual Console could sell.
Currently, though, it's like getting all the bottom of the barrel crap from the App Store (Air Hockey, Mahjong, and Astrology really?), none of the good stuff, and it's all ridiculously overpriced.
I actually liked the Zombie Panic in Wonderland demo. Would have been an instant buy at 500 points (even though that's still "expensive" by Apple standards). But at 1000? I'm only still considering it because I like the developer.
I have little hope it's going to get better with the 3DS. Nintendo is currently doing nothing to show that it has any clue at all with an online marketplace. But, I guess, it has nowhere to go but up.

I think the problem for games like Donkey Kong would be the controller. DK needs a 4-way stick. Otherwise it's pretty unpleasant to play. There is no 4-way stick/controller for the Wii. The d-pad on the controllers is 8 way, ditto for the available arcade stick options, and I don't think they have an option to switch to 4-way.
The problem with using an 8-way stick with a 4-way stick game is what does it mean when you are in a corner, where you inevitably end up? Is the upper left corner equal to UP or to LEFT? They try to finagle it by looking at where you were coming from, but that's not always right.. Inevitably you find yourself trying to go up and you go left, or whatever, and it's frustrating. I.e. the Wii, Gamecube, DS, etc, is not made for DK. Sad but true.

They could package a custom "arcade" controller with Wii points, and it would sell.

Even though I don't own a DSi, I can still say every week when I read the download report I really feel the same way. I seriously think Nintendo needs some type of control on this type of stuff. It seems like anyone can make something that is garbage and put it up on the Nintendo store nowadays, no matter how bad it is. What I don't get is how they allow this crap up on the stores yet they refuse to release a lot of their VC games that were excellent.

What the Virtual Console needs is Donkey Kong Arcade and Donkey Kong 64. You'd think after the popularity of DKCR we'd see one if not both of them.

I really wish Wayforward would have ported Shantae over to Wiiware, I would have picked it up in a second. This new game looks kinda cool (concept wise) but the gfx are low-res poly N64 era stuff. They are a cool developer, but they seriously need to start putting their stuff on the correct platforms for people to take notice. (Wii>DSi) Or to another platform entirely.

They somehow do it with other 4-way games. NES Donkey Kong, NES Donkey Kong Jr., Pac Man, etc.
I remember when I first got my Wii. I used to check the VC downloads each Monday. Now I know that it's mostly just crap stuff or, at least, stuff that seems like it would be crap - which kind of sucks because there are independent developers out there who might make a really great game that I'd miss because there's just so much crap.
I don't want to sort (and spend money) my way through a barrel of rotten apples to find the one good one.
A lot of these DL games (Wii and PS3) have been little more than mildly amusing. Like you paid your $5-10 for them but you grow bored with them after a week. There are some gems, they just seem to be few and far between.

What the Virtual Console needs is Donkey Kong Arcade and Donkey Kong 64. You'd think after the popularity of DKCR we'd see one if not both of them.
They could re-release the Game Cube games (well, some select ones) as VC games and I think they'd sell well.
I'm probably the odd-ball with this but I'd rather have DL games and a menu to get to them than a shelf full of games. Just less to keep up with.
I feel the same way about movies and music. I just want the digital versions and a way to navigate them rather than shelves full of boxes.

Wii doesn't have anywhere near the storage capacity for GameCube games. Plus, download sizes are limited to 40mb. I'd rather have stuff on my shelves because prices are too high for me to justify buying digital versions at the same price when I get less in return. Sure I have to pop in discs into my system but it's a small price to pay for something I can keep forever.
Also, I'm thinking about buying a Bit.Trip game. What would be the best one to buy?

Ten massive environments will immerse you in an eccentric and wacky world. A captivating and humorous storyline unfolds through each level, all the way to the grand finale. Sniper mode allows you to shoot an enemy in the eye from more than a mile away. Solve puzzles to create deadly weaponry with the brilliant mind of Dr. Hawkins. Sneak, snipe and shoot with Kurt's suit, which is equipped with a cloaking device.
And I just shit my pants seeing MDK 2 let alone a good game on the shop channel.

Some VC news. First, Square-Enix confirmed (http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/219355/chrono-trigger-confirmed-for-virtual-console-on-may-16/) that Chrono Trigger will be releasing in the US on May 16th, next week.
In a European blog post (http://blogs.sega.com/europe/2011/05/12/wonderful-news-as-segas-vintage-collection-returns/), Sega announced "the next edition of our Vintage Collection series" for VC and PSN. Most of the games on the list are already on VC, but there are a few notable tidbits.
- The big one is Monster World IV; Sega confirmed that they are localizing it.
- Wonder Boy in Monster World (Arcade)
- Super Hang-On (Arcade?)

Much awesome VC news lately. Definitely down for most of those Sega titles and Chrono Trigger is a no-brainer even with the DS and PSX ports.
Bring on Final Fantasy III.
EDIT - The disparity in quality between the VC releases and Wiiware continues to be hilarious...
Chrono Trigger - A young man is transported into the past, altering the course of history and the outcome of the future. He has to find his way home, but first he must travel to the outer edges of time to repair the world's chronology. On the way, he encounters strange friends and foes, uses incredible devices and vehicles, and penetrates and neutralizes the fortresses of the past, present and future. A paradox has been created. If he does not restore the order of time, nothing will ever be the same. He is the one who will become a hero. He is Crono.
vs.
Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove: Monster Mix - Join Gabrielle and her monster friends as they dance along to a spooktacular selection of songs. Grab your Wii Remote™ controller and dance along as you shimmy, shake and spin in time to the music. There's trouble in Monster Town: Vlad the Vampire's loyal zombies have disappeared. Gabrielle and her monster friends will have to bust some serious moves on the dance floor in order to lure them back. Along the way, maybe they can uncover the identity of the mysterious creature that's terrorizing Monster Town's zombies. Up to four players can show off their best moves in the game's multiplayer mode. (Additional accessories are required for multiplayer mode and are sold separately.) Short and full versions of songs let you dance as much as you want. Unlock tons of outrageous outfits and items.
I'm so glad that I grew up in the 80s/90s as opposed to nowadays.

Are we talking the actual 2D Final Fantasy 3 for the NES? It would be about fucking time we get the original copy from EnixSquare instead of the giant fuck you EnixSquare gave with only the option of the remake for it on the DS for fans here.

I don't think the NES one will come out here. I'd love for it to happen complete with a translation but thus far, changes to VC games have been extremely minimal (changing Enix to Square Enix in Actraiser is about the only example I can think of off the top of my head).
I was referring to the SNES one by its original US name. We got CT and FF IV. Japan is slated to get FF VI (I think I read that somewhere). We'll get SNES III and it'll blow me away again.

I thought I was the only person who remembered T&C. Wasn't that game terrible, though? I remember wanting a really cool skateboarding game and the only tricks you could do were railslides and jumping off your board and landing on it again, right? And the surfing hardly had any tricks either, if I remember correctly. Just get your surfboard to the top of the wave and tap up and down to throw your nose over the top repeatedly to get points.
Skate or Die was great. 720 was also a blast but I hated the controller in the arcade.

Super Adventure Island is good, but the TG16 version which has been on the VC almost since the beginning, is better. The best one is the long forgotten Super Adventure Island 2 for SNES which is more of a non-linear Action RPG as opposed to the rest of the series being strictly platforming.

So I went off to press.nintendo.com to see what came out this week. Instead I get a little message about how they're switching things up with the online stores. Okay, great, so switching things up means that you can't release anything the fucking week after e3? Sure...
I get it, Nintendo, you're pretty much done with the DS and the Wii but you haven't told me shit about how much the Wii U will cost and I know that the 3DS will get a better version in a year so I'm not going to buy one now.
I'm down for Skyward Sword, but it fucking sucks that I'm pretty much being forced out of the DS. Did it ever even get outsold by the PSP in the US? Yeah, I'm off on a tangent but it seems stupid to have launched the 3DS when no one wanted the DS to get replaced.
EDIT - Oops haha. I guess they're going to do updates on Thursdays now, nevermind, carry on.

PSP has 17 million owners in the US. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psp#Sales) 67 million users worldwide.
Wikipedia is a little behind, stating 127 million DS units worldwide a year ago. It's got at least 55 million users in the US. Kinda the best-selling handheld of all time.

I really enjoyed Castlevania Rebirth although I'm dying for a stage select code. You can't save your progress so any time I want to play it, I have to start over.
Regarding the DS vs. PSP sales numbers, I knew that DS was ahead, I guess I was more looking for some evidence that the PSP was beating the DS on a month to month basis. I'm not that worried about it, not enough to go do the research but I will say that anecdotally, it never happened in the US. We don't enjoy Monster Hunter enough. I guess my beef is that if you're winning the monthly sales wars, why fix what isn't broken.
Come on Nintendo, announce the 3ds lite for next summer so I can at least look forward to getting one.
The PSP was ahead for a month or two, in japan. It had actually topped sales charts for systems, in japan, during that time. Read that on the-magicbox

Holy crap, I had 5400 points on my account. Snagged Chrono Trigger and now I don't know what else to blow my points on. According to Wikipedia, the Nintendo points system is going to be phased out-- how does that work for points already on the account? I just don't want to get screwed over.
Maybe I'll gift a bunch of people Super Mario RPG and get some more sales for the game in so that the following happens:
-Square and Nintendo quickly realize that in the DS' twilight, a port can be made to cash in
-Square and Nintendo quickly realize that a sequel should be discussed
- For no apparent reason, Mother 3 is translated and released in America, along with a series of sequels that are critically acclaimed and sell millions.

I'll get Retro City Rampage, La Mulana and maybe Machinarium once they come out and that should get rid of most my left overs. The demos they launched late saved me a bit of money, I almost blind purchased Frobot which wouldn't have been too bad of a mistake.

KingBroly, I was referring to this
The Nintendo Points currency system is not supported on the Nintendo 3DS, and will eventually become fully obsolete on the Wii and Nintendo DSi as well when Nintendo's real currency-based system becomes standard. In Japan, the Wii and Nintendo DSi shops already converted to the new currency system that is used by the Nintendo 3DS.
So, it sounds at some point the Wii shop will stop taking points. I'm curious how that affects existing points cards, and points already loaded on someone's system.
Also, Mad, I didn't load up on Pepsi (though it sounds like you did a hell of a job) I got cards from TRU when they were 12.XX. Yet It Moves, I completely forgot about. I may grab that. Also, good call on Retro City Rampage-- that game looks awesome. I remember reading a preview in Nintendo Power months ago-- still not out, eh? Also, Sega is bringing out a localized version of Monster IV, so I'll definitely be grabbing that to support imports done properly.

You should be playing Final Fantasy 3 anyway. Whenever you ask yourself the question "Am I currently playing Final Fantasy 3?" and the answer is no, you should feel bad about yourself, and rectify it immediately.
I was in the middle of saving a drowning puppy when I asked myself that. Good times, good times.
The puppy drowned. He was kind of a jerk though for a puppy.

I do feel bad, but I grew tired of the grinding and never finished back in the day. Probably the only game I never finished from the SNES era and it was still epic.
If you like RPGs FF3 (VI) was in fact that good.

Final Fantasy 3 is that good?
Best story, characters, and music in the franchise by a long shot. Utterly beautiful 16-bit graphics. Second best battle system and overall gameplay-- but I am one of those weirdos who thinks FF12 was revolutionary and amazing, so if you hated that game, feel free to give FF6 the gameplay crown too.

Final Fantasy VI is one of the best FF games hands down. I'm thinking of buying it and playing it again. It holds up really well for being such an old game.

If anyone has extra points to spend, definitely check out Super Adventure Island 2 for SNES which was put up today. It's a non-linear adventure platformer with some RPG-ish elements, totally different from the rest of the series, and it was quickly forgotten about after it's release. It really is one of the best platformers on the console though.

Buy a super cheap SD card and migrate stuff to it. My Wii is split up by systems. All my NES and SNES games are on the internal memory, every other system/Wiiware is on a ~$8 SD card.

Probably not, the VC is dead as fuck and most Wiiware games are pants-shittingly bad.
Get Castlevania Rebirth if you don't already have it.

VC looks dead to me, too.
I check every so often just to see if they released any Nintendo Arcade titles to VC (Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Mario Bros) - They seem like naturals but no, they never do.
Checked this morning and it looks like there's been one or two VC releases this year and just a few more last year. I think they've given up on it.

You know what would have been so cool... Nintendo should have released VC games on their original schedule, say +15 years. That would put some buzz back into the VC.

That would've been really cool. Many old games didn't have super-firm release dates but they could do stuff like a holiday rush with games appearing in at least the appropriate month (For example, I think FF III was October of 1994).

I'd be in, but only if they could replicate the "chip shortages" of 1988 that caused most consumers to have a really hard time finding copies of SMB2 and Zelda 2 (at least in my memory), among others.
Maybe only 10% of Wii consumers, randomly selected, would have it show up in their store, and more and more will have it appear as the weeks go by. Yeah?
I mean, what's all this nonsense about reliving the experience if we can't relive the "you found it? nah, me either?. wait, you did? where the fuck? oh, at a Super X store? no shit?" fanaticism of the NES era.
Halo05

I found the SNES Ogre Battle like that. It was nuts. No major store had it, no one knew what I was talking about when I called, I knew the game existed but without the internet, no one else did. Then I randomly called Starland Videogames and started what turned out to be a very long relationship between them as a store and me as a customer.
I don't know if I'd like to try and digitally hunt down a copy of something to buy, but as time goes on, I do think the digital download business model needs something more. For example, if I got a PS3 today and I owned no games for it, wandering onto the PSN with, say $20 would be overwhelming. I'd be greeted by dozens of games that I want to buy and no real way to pick where to start. I'm not saying that I want games to vanish from digital storefronts but something will eventually change, I'm just not smart enough to know what it will be.

...a month and half later, we still haven't gotten any new VC games.
And to think that I felt the original Xbox had an undignified death.
It wouldn't bug me if there weren't some glaring loose ends sitting around on the VC but at least finish the franchises that have at least a few entries on the VC. I'm looking at you Mega Man and MMX. I think Konami said they were done with the VC which is terrible because there's no Castlevania Bloodlines or Contra up yet.

I don't really understand Nintendo's position on the VC. They did seem to push it at the beginning as a selling point. I can understand about other companies' games, perhaps, but there are lots of Nintendo's own games we never got. Even if the sales aren't great, it can't cost them much to "convert" them and make them available. And if they had done better at the beginning (including things like giving original Wii buyers the first SMB/Duck Hunt combo or something as a free VC download), then they would have gotten people involved and used to doing it early on, and maybe kept them interested. They did a few releases of the original on VC right before releasing the re-done version at retail. But not nearly enough! Such a wasted opportunity.

Has there been any word about how Virtual Console will migrate to the Wii U? Has any games "journalist" actually asked about whether Nintendo might move to a system where purchases are tied to the user rather than the console?

With the exception of TMNT, I imagine they'll all transfer over to Wii U. I doubt Nintendo will make an account-based system though, as there isn't one for the eShop.
Nintendo just needs to push their online shop more, and that's how they'll get more digital goods. In addition, they need an account system. It's the main reason why sales on WSC stopped because people ran into the issue of their systems dying and they couldn't transfer them over to a new system.
