I've been on a debate lately about whether or not it is right to trade games in at gamestop. For about 6 months i have been totally against trading in games, but now that i could use some extra money just for the heck of it, i feel like trading some games in. I added up the games i would want to trade in and noticed i would get 60% of what gamestop sells the games i trade in to them for.

There's so many different things on trading in games. Is it really a bad deal? Should i feel bad for the developer for trying to save more money? Is gamestop really that bad? Should i make a huge collection of games or trade in old ones i don't play and won't play?

What are your thoughts on gamestop, or trading in games in general?

I'm usually opposed to trading in at Gamestop, but if they are offering you 60% of what they sell their games for that sounds like a pretty good deal. I don't think you should feel that bad for the developers. You paid for the game and you reserve the right to resell it whenever you want. You shouldn't feel bad about reselling your property.

You also might be able to sell your games to a guy on that posts on this site named "pfp", he's an eBay seller that will pay CAGs cash for their games. You might get more money from him than GS, plus it won't be Gamestop monopoly money, it'll be real useable cash.

As far as trading in/selling used games go, don't feel bad for developers. Though developers often get fucked over by publishers, they are still a cog in the corporate machine. They're looking out for their own bankbook, just like everyone else. They don't worry about your income. Don't worry about theirs.

As far as trading into GameStop goes, it's fine, as long as they have a promo, like the one going on, now.

When they don't have any decent promos, it's kind of hard to justify getting stuck with nothing but store credit (you can get cash from them, but the TIV gets slashed by 20%, and you can't use promos) when they are going to give you so little for your games.

The way I see it, if developers really cared about me as a consumer they would create games with a ton of great content on the disc and support their product with DLC at a fair price for the content offered.

Instead of whining about the used game market, try making games I want to keep. Give me an incentive to not sell your game, developers!

As for your situation, if you need the cash now, go with GameStop.

If you don't want to ship stuff, than GS is really the only place around that will give you a decent amount for your games. You can also try Play N Trade if you've got one near you, they might give you more credit for your stuff than GS. Plus they'll take pretty much all game stuff from any generation if you've got older games/systems/accessories to get rid of.

The flip side of that is if you give the consumers DLC they'll just burn you at the stake and scream "Should have been on the disc!" over and over again.

Great post! To add, if you have a GameCrazy or small mom & pop place that does trade-in's they may give you better value as they are trying to take Gamestop's business.

You could always try putting up a post on Craiglists. Ask for more than GameStop would give you and see if anyone lowballs you into an area you're comfortable with. If it doesn't work, no skin off your back.

gamestop will rape you no matter what.

Sometimes it's better to keep the games instead of trading

I saw an ad in my GS email that said "trade in your DS Lite and get an extra $25". I was like "sweet, if they gave me around $65 for it that would be like $90 which I could live with". So I call them up and ask for the current trade in value - $45. Ugh, no thanks.

Not true at all. Like I said, if they have a good promo, it can work out pretty well. You'll almost never get what you can get from eBay, but after you consider eBay fees, PayPal fees, shipping, and the annoyance of dealing with jerkoff buyers, you can still make out great.

If you're completely against selling or trading and would rather keep your games, that's an understandable stance. But GameStop can't "rape" you if you are an informed consumer. They don't really make their money off of people like CAGs. They make it off soccer moms, their kids, lazy people, etc.

They give you better value if you want store credit, but then you get stuck with another card to sell before profit.

Yeah store credit is fine with me, but only giving $45 worth base? No thank you.

Yeah, $70 of store credit isn't that great. Then again, I had a near-mint, barely-sued DS Lite on my tradelist forever at $95 or $100 shipped, I think. This was after not being able to get an offer on Craiglist of higher than $70...damn lowballers. Finally sold it to a CAG, but after shipping and fees, I was looking at more like $80. Obviously, selling it through eBay would take a bigger chunk out of your ass, but you'd probably be able to get a little more from the buyer. I guess the $70 credit wouldn't be too bad if the DS was heavily used.

Sometimes its good and sometimes its bad. It depends on the situation and what deals they are offering.
