View Full Version : Storage Solution GET!!

Knoxximus

Update your Wii's NOW! Storage solution went live today to correspond with Iwata's keynote!

Once you clear your games off the Wii internal memory, you can launch games from the SD! It takes a minute (not literally), as the Wii will move the game from SD to internal memory then run it! No more moving stuff around! Plus it's nice to see all the channels full.

The best news?

MY 4GB WORKAROUND STILL WORKS LIKE A CHAMP!!:applause::bouncy:

Sadly, I'm not excited as I should be given that this should've been in the system at launch. (Or at least with the introduction of WiiWare).

But in either case, I'm glad it's here. I can actually start using my Wii Nintendo Points again and install all those pointless channels that I never use.

I'd have to think that SDHC drives are already in the Wii else there would have to be data conflicts if one would fill up the card.

I wonder if one could have used the 4gb non SDHC cards before this update without problem.

Seems weird to have a limit when there isn't one.

The other nice thing is picture cards being viewed now that are larger than 4gb and SDHC correct?

Knoxximus
03-25-2009, 02:06 PM
Another cool thing is that once you initially load a game, the Wii automatically manages that load, meaning that when you turn your Wii on the next time, go to SD load, and pick that game again, it will load instantly. This will remain untill a)you manually delete the SD load file from your Wii Channel management menu or b) you allow the Wii to manage your space as you load various titles and it just might pick that particular game to delete to make space for something else on the fly.

And this is all done in the background...pretty effin sweet!!

Well if they were going to figure that out, you would think they would have already done it considering that the method that Nintendo is using is identical to how Rock Band and GH:WT are handling DLC tracks on the Wii.

It doesn't read save files so you should leave them on your Wii. Also, you have to have enough space on the Wii to load the game to the Wii memory. Keep about 400 blocks open.

Game saves need to stay on the internal memory.

I would recommend moving all of the smaller VC games to an SD card and leaving the bigger WiiWare titles saved to internal memory. The VC games load super fast while N64 and larger games take 7-10 seconds to load before you can play them.

Also, Strell noted that games that use WiiConnect 24 will not work from the SD card.

I put everything on my SD card for the moment.. I have 1018 blocks on my Wii! Haven't seen that in years!

Only caveat I see is that the SD load page has a limit of 20 pages, or 240 games. So a 32GB card is kind of moot unless...

a) You download only N64, Turbo-CD, NeoGeo, and WiiWare titles
b) You have a SHIT TON of DLC for Guitar Hero and/or Rock Band

Barring that even an 8 or 16GB card is more than enough.

lilboo
03-25-2009, 06:34 PM
I have a 2GB..with pics...and I have close to 7000 blocks. 2GB, IMO, is more than enough.
The good thing is that, the SD card will hold 240 games. So, basically, if that EVER gets filled..you can put all your small games on the Wii, and keep the larger ones on the SD card.

I still don't know how I want to keep mine set up. At least now I have options.

I have a cheapo 256 MB card in there that I used to back up old games and saves to. Today I moved all of my VC games and some WiiWare games to it and the card still has over 1000 blocks left.

I think a 2 GB card will last a long-ass time unless you are consistently downloading WiiWare stuff and even then, just buy another 2 GB card - they are cheap as hell.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think Nintendo enabled SDHC with future plans in mind. There has been talk of streaming movies and stuff like that which would need some storage for caching, etc.

DocRamon
03-25-2009, 08:00 PM
this still didn't solve what i feel is an even bigger problem... locked save data. i still can't move or copy data for online games like endless ocean, mario kart, or the monster that is smash brothers. which means that, in time, after enough games are saved, i still might not have the room needed to boot stuff from an sd card.

What I'm hoping is that we now see game patches. Patches could be stored on SD or internal memory and loaded when the game loads. I'm dreaming, I'm sure. In any case, I think the notion that x GB is enough is off. It all depends on what Nintendo and/or third party developers do with this new feature. With the ability to have up to 32 GB of storage, I can see more games offering real DLC.

Cool.

Does this mess up that one certain channel?

From what I've seen, the Wii treats existing channels as just that - existing channels.

The way it was phrased somewhere else was that the method used to enable the channel is what Nintendo guns for - not the channel itself. So once it is there, updates like this seem to ignore it. True, new firmware could break it, but it seems this one doesn't.

I.e., like on The Office when Kevin said he can't bring beer to work, but there's no rule about brewing it there.

Think of this as a loophole.

I think I did read, however, that if you are planning such things and haven't done the method yet, this will close that entry down.

Make sense?

It was twilight, and I was hacking away at some trees. But unfortunately, my ax broke and it no longer works.

Has anyone had some issues with channels on the SD card? I was trying to test a couple of VC titles, and couldn't get some of them to work. Kirby's Dreamland 3 refused to copy over from the SD to the Wii. In addition both Cubello and Space Invaders Get Even show up as ?'s as the channel icon, and refuse to launch off the SD card as well.

I'd try deleting what you have and then downloading directly to the SD card and trying again.

Unfortunately, the message is somewhat vague with something like, "Unable to load channel."

I already deleted and re-downloaded the problem channels, and the exact same issues arose, so I wanted to check and see if anyone else was having specific problems with those channels before before I try another avenue.
