I can't wake I loved Phantom Hourglass (except for the main dungeon you had to keep on going through) and I can't wait to play a new game in that style.

I'm torn on this. I liked PH initially but I got bored when I died because of my suckiness with the ds controls. I've had a DS since launch and hadn't really had any problems till PH. Also I really want a full blown Wii Zelda more.
Maybe I just need to play PH some more and maybe I'll be more pumped.

They said before that both teams were hard at work- if they are ready to announce a DS game, it makes me wonder how far off a Wii title could be. Nintendo has been odd about announcing releases lately. They seem to be keeping most of their titles underwraps until a few months before release (PunchOut comes to mind)- but then again, WiiSports Resort has been mysteriously absent from the release lists.

Someone breaking their NDA?
Looks like Phantom Hourglass. Provided they ditch the revisiting of a single dungeon, and have an expanded world map to explore, I think this could be a solid title. Phantom Hourglass brought a well needed breath of fresh air on the series, as well as offering a new perspective on the series. I'm actually looking forward to seeing this sometime this year.

awesome. PH was one of my favorite Zelda games and it's nice to see some new concepts. i agree that revisiting that dungeon over and over was pretty terrible, though. at least the design was done in a way to get you through it much faster the later you are in the game.

I know I'll never see it, but I'd like to see another Zelda like "Link's Awakening" or "Link to the Past". I'd rather have another Wii Zelda as well. But...
I'm still excited about another Zelda despite my longing for those above.

I like the music, seems very inspired from the style of Wind Waker. Needs more of this!

03-25-2009, 05:08 PM
Wind Waker was one of my favorite games ever, phantom hourglass sucked...way too easy and repetitive, which some may say is similar for wind waker, but the small screen just killed it. And also, the graphics didn't even look like Wind Waker...the jagged look of the character models threw everything off. I can't find any enjoyment on my DS aside from SRPGS, so I won't be buying this...
Anyway when I went to IGN and saw "New Zelda" on their front page, with graphics that looked like something similar to an updated OOT, I thought it'd be for the Wii or something. What a letdown when I clicked the link and find a Link that is similar to the Link from PH =/

I hear that train a-comin', it's rollin' around the bend
And I ain't seen the triforce since I don't know when
I'm stuck in that same dungeon and time keeps draggin' on
But that train keeps a-rollin' on down to Koholint
When I was just a baby, my mama told me, ward
Always be a good boy, don't swing a Master Sword
But I stabbed a pol in Hyrule, just to watch him die
When I hear that ocarina blowin', I hang my head and cry
OR
Oooo, Ganon proved too much for the man,
So he's leavin' the life he's come to know,
He said he's goin' back to find
Ooh, what's left of his world,
The world he left behind
Not so long ago.
He's leaving,
On that Midna train to Hyrule,
And he's goin' back
To a simpler place and time.
And I'll be with him
On that Midna train to Hyrule,
I'd rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine.

ugh, I know I'll still get it, but I'd love it if they got rid of the damned touch controlls. The Oracle series on GBC and Minish Cap on GBA were fantastic Zelda games. I still haven't finished PH. I get bored of it too quickly for some reason.

Well, I really liked Phantom Hourglass, so obviously I'm excited about this new one. I also enjoyed Minish Cap, but, and I'm sure I'll take a beating for it, Phantom Hourglass was more fun. I also really liked the touch controls and would be sad if they took that away. Fortunately I doubt that they will. Hopefully they'll build upon and improve them.

You're not alone there. I liked both, but preferred PH to Minish Cap. The touch controls do not bother me at all. The only thing I didn't like about PH was returning to the same dungeon again and again and dealing with the time limit. But I loved the nautical aspect and the style of play. Minish Cap felt too short to me.

Not excited for this, couldn't stand the abundance of touch controls from phantom hourglass. I much prefer the classic style of the past portable zelda games.
I don't mind some touch controls here and there but imo they killed PH by going overboard with them. If they can tone down the touch controls then I might get this game.

Hmm, I'll probably end up with it at some point, but I'm not getting too excited yet. I also liked Link to the Past style the best.
The worst parts about PH for me were:
1. Random part collection, especially when you worked your butt off to get a chest in the main dungeon and it just held some crappy ship part.
2. The time limit in the main dungeon.

I enjoyed PH and found it charming and delightful. The train concept seems weird, but i'm intrigued. A larger world is always nice. I guess they are trying to move away from the ocean concept.
Phantom Hourglass was a great game. The only issue I had with the touch controls is that my hand got in the way of seeing what was on the screen. I also rather enjoyed how they implemented the temple.

I really liked Phantom Hourglass, and am running through it a second time now, and it's still enjoyable to me. I like what I see in this trailer, except for the fact that the train has basically just replaced the boat, except it's stuck to rails. You'll probably unlock or build new rails to make travel easier, but the glaring omission of an overworld you can really explore is still there.
Link has a wind gun? Looks like the bow and arrow that just fires wind. I like it, and the controlling of a dummy character. I'd say I'd keep an eye on this one, but both that and the fact that I'll be buying this are both a given.

For those who missed it, Nintendo released a gameplay trailer of Spirit Tracks at E3 (It was also playable at Nintendo's exhibit):

As you can see, Link can now use a whip. Apparently, when a problem comes along, you must whip it. When a chasm must be crossed, you must whip it. Now whip it, and be sure to whip it good. Ku-rack that whip.

He still has the boomerang, and if you're lucky he has a boat tool. We'll it would have to be more of a cargo ship, with the train and all, but same thing.
Phantom hourglass was fun but the dungeons were oversimplified. I am hoping this one is a bit more complex.

Phantom Hourglass was great and I'm definitely looking forward to the new one. Regarding "oversimplified" dungeons... there have been some really annoying dungeons in Zelda games of the past, and Phantom Hourglass didn't have any. The challenge was just about right. I suspect what I consider annoying is exactly what you are looking for, though. :)
EDIT: by saying there were no "annoying" dungeons in Hourglass, I'm of course completely ignoring that one repeated unmentionable in Phantom Hourglass. ;^) Yes, it had its faults, although that didn't bother me as much as it did some - I got into finding the shortcuts. Anyway, the "annoying" I'm talking about are those dungeons that are ridiculously convoluted and require lots of trial and error and memorization.

A new trailer premiered on GameTrailers:

Re: Preorder bonuses
Doesn't look like NA gets any, but Japan gets a feather/quill stylus akin to the Phantom Hourglass preorder. The difference is that it comes in a rupee shaped case, (http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=103209) which makes my heart hurt, because now I'll have to track one down somehow.
The UK gets a tin box with little figurine statuettes of Link and the Phantom he can control. You can actually order it and have it shipped to you, (http://www.game.co.uk) and the final price ends up being roughly $48. Seems like the standard MSRP around here is going to be $35 no matter what (even on Amazon), so it might not be such a bad idea if you really dig this kind of swag.

I really hope this is better than the last one. The handheld Zeldas are some of my favorites but the last two (Minnish Cap and Phantom Hourglass) have been the worst in the series, IMO. I want them to bring back the top-down style and make a game with 15 dungeons, a huge overworld and tons of side quests that actually matter.

Phantom Hourglass is the game which revived my interest in Zelda games. I think it is one of the best games on the DS. It is the only game in years that I literally never wanted to put down. I played it straight through with no distractions, something which likely hasn't occurred since Super Mario 64.

I liked the game too, but I couldn't always get the slashing mechanic to work properly (nor the rolling mechanic, but that didn't bother me as much). This wasn't a problem until The 3 ghost boss on the ship, where you had to bat the attack back and forth. I failed the fight twice because I couldn't get slashes to register. (altho' this may just be my ds, as it is pretty old and sometimes wont work at all)
Still looking forward to this game ... I just wish I could get some button control alternative from Nintendo :<

I really only like the cartoony, cell-shaded Zelda games. I've thoroughly enjoyed (and beaten) Minish Cap, Wind Waker, and Phantom Hourglass.
I've never gotten into or been able to complete any other iterations of Zelda/Link, so I'm optimistic that Spirit Tracks will have a little bit of that "secret sauce" that ropes me into these games.

Wasn't Minish Cap just a more colorful version of the traditional top-down Zeldas? That wasn't in the full-on Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass "Celda" style, but the modified 2D version that was also used in Four Swords (Wii and GBA). I enjoyed that one, but my main knock against it was that it seemed really, really short (no pun intended).
I'm with those that loved Phantom Hourglass except for the annoying recycled central dungeon. So they'd have a hard time messing up Spirit Tracks for me. It looks like the train aspect and the Zelda enemy possession bit will really reinvent a lot of the gameplay.

Yeah a preorder bonus or release day sale would probably actually make me preorder the game. When I bought PH I got the game guide for free from TRU. Actually I would prefer another sale like this as opposed to a preorder bonus like another stylus or something, as the guide was something I actually would use.
I agree that WW was my favorite Zelda, although I have only played the Zeldas from WW on, and admit that as my first Zelda game, I was probably biased towards WW's style. Nevertheless I was always a fan of cel-shaded graphic style in games and WW is one of the most stylistic games I have ever played it was awesome. Also, contrary to popular opinion, I actually really liked the free-sailing mechanic. It was relaxing and fun, and really lent a sense of freedom to the game.

It's not that I didn't enjoy Phantom Hourglass - it just wasn't that great compared to most other Zelda games (but still one of the best games on the DS if that makes any sense). I didn't like the stylus controls (but I did enjoy the map feature and using the items with the stylus). I felt like I had little control over his sword and the roll was next to impossible for me to pull off on a consistent basis. My hand also seemed to cover 2/3 of the action most of the time which was annoying. The temple you had to do over and over was also tiring but I admit I liked finding quicker ways to get through it as your abilities increased.
My problem with The Minish Cap was the fundamental "big/small" mechanic they implemented throughout the game. I didn't think moving around as the little sprite was fun at all. Also, the game design was poor - sections of the overworld were only accessible after finding an item or something you needed to get over an obstacle. Most Zelda games let you explore quite a bit and see things where you think "how do I get there?". The Minish Cap was extremely linear - I never had the sense of "oh - when I find Item X I'm definitely coming back here." It was more like, "now that I have Item X let's see which part of the map I can open up." Big difference. Finally, the dungeons were fun but the overworld was really really small and the game in general was way too short, which I think really hurts it IMO. Again, I enjoyed the game overall but it was a poor effort based on the high standards set by the previous games in the series.
If I were to rank the handheld Zeldas (not including remakes) it would go like this - no question:
1. Oracle of Ages
2. Oracle of Seasons
3. Link's Awakening
4. The Minish Cap
5. Phantom Hourglass

I am in complete agreement with all of your critiques. I think the linear nature of the game contributed to its shortness. I was only quibbling over whether it could be considered a Celda title.
+1 I loved the sailing in WW and PH, probably because I enjoy sailing in real life. There aren't enough games that feature that kind of a mechanic. It works really well as a method of open exploration. And right around the time it gets tiresome in both games, you're given the ability to warp around.

oh I definitely think it is a "Celda" title. So they are 1 for 3 with those, I guess. Wind Waker was awesome - arguably my favorite and if it had 2-4 more dungeons and the islands were a little closer together it would be my favorite. I loved it.

When I bought PH I got the game guide for free from TRU. Actually I would prefer another sale like this as opposed to a preorder bonus like another stylus or something, as the guide was something I actually would use.
Is next week's TRU flier posted yet? I'm still hoping they've got something planned for the release.

It should be available on Tuesday like most Nintendo games. I personally have a 20% off coupon for anything at TRU and it's good through the rest of the year, so I'm using it on Spirit Tracks. An additional item/bonus would just be gravy.

Japan gets a feather/quill stylus akin to the Phantom Hourglass preorder. The difference is that it comes in a rupee shaped case (http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=103209)
The Nintendo World Store e-mailed me and it says:
Purchase the game and receive a The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks feather stylus (limited quanity, while supplies last).
I wonder if it is the one in the rupee case...?? I would have to have one....

Deals are: B1G1 50% off all games at TRU, $5 in RZ points at BB with purchase and extra 25% credit at GS for trade-ins towards the purchase of Zelda.
Nothing special.

DON'T! It is fantastic! The overworld theme will go down as one of the best, ever.
I only beat the Forest temple, which was rediculously easy for veterans, but damn it is fun!
The train has its merits, thus far. It is not a horse killer AT ALL, but it seems fun. It really works well with the theme of the game though.

Debating picking this up. I skipped Phantom Hourglass since I... am one of those subhuman creatures who hated Windwaker due to the sailing, and... all the characters having elephant feet, like Strong Sad from Home Star Runner. (Cel shading doesn't bother me. Very small feet do. The Johnny Bravo style.)
If the controls are good, and the story is interesting, I can play the game and enjoy it.
How good/bad are the stylus controls? Do I have to do anything that demands fine control with inaccurate motions? (Mario Luigi Inside Story Pollen Mini game.)

Yes, the constant false reads by the microphone work great when I have to follow along quickly with those stupid Locomo jerks  I don't know how many there are, but the third one is aggravating.

While I agree that using the buttons would've been better, I haven't had nearly as much trouble as some people on the flute parts. I passed the 3rd and 4th part after 2 or 3 times max.

12-15-2009, 07:24 PM
I personally haven't had any issues with the flute, but I could see how it could be troublesome. It's somewhat disappointing they couldn't provide an alternative for noisy environments.
I've made it through on my first tries with all 3 of the maps so far, so it's either because I'm playing in a quiet environment, have a musical background, or am just lucky.

I generally play the game on the train, and I got to the 5th flute part while on the train today. I actually couldn't pass the part because the train is so loud. I just sat at my desk and on the second try I got it.
While these parts are OKAY, they are easily passable once you get used to the flute.
Also, the Sand Wand item is phenomenal.

12-16-2009, 12:09 PM
For the train, as that is how a I'll be playing the game once I get a turn with it, perhaps what you could do is cover the mic with a finger when you aren't suppose to be playing, then lift up when you are. Could be tricky to get the hang of, but might work.
I sometimes even have problems with GTA:CW on the train - I'll keep calling cabs! I'll be stuck because it keeps stopping and saying to walk up to the chevrons. LOL. That game does have a microphone sensitivity adjustment, though. When I'm standing between cars, though, even the lowest setting isn't low enough!

Color: compare to other carts, should be the same, bootlegs are a different shade.
Label: make sure it has a proper label that's printed at the best quailty, most of the time there should be a 2 digit stamp in the label too.
Text on Circuit board: tilt like you're going to "blow" on it, but view on the green, should be NINTENDO on the board with gold, not silver pins.
The Nintendo logo on the inside of the slot has yet to fail me.

I thought the second boss and the second world were pretty weak but I loved the third/fourth/fifth and the last half of the spirit temple. The final world can be a little frustrating but the final boss is a really good time.
Stick with it. If you absolutely must go for all train parts then do everything leading up to the final realm. E.g. clear out the spirit temple completely and then do all the minigames as you will have a LOT more treasure with which to buy parts.

It's a little hard for me to get into. I don't mind the train but it's a little slow and the lack of a good warp system is annoying. I despise the bomb cars. They're just a hurdle for you to detour around and extend the game an unnecessary 10 minutes.

They needed a better warping system in this.
Also, I cannot pass Rael's duet. Every time I go to the last green note, it gets hit twice even though I'm breathing into the mic steadily. I hate the flute. It's just a gimmick Nintendo made up to take advantage of an otherwise useless hardware feature.
EDIT: I finally beat it. Turns out I wasn't playing each note long enough. The Sand Temple is definitely one of the most creative in any Zelda game.

I just started and I feel the same way. I beat the first dungeon in the woods and got the second map piece (but haven't been there yet). The train is SLOW. Can you ever get out and walk in the overworld or is it all train tracks? Also, blowing into the mic SUCKS. It is an OK idea but the execution is shit because it doesn't work 100% of the time. Does it SUCK or does it BLOW?
A problem I have with games that use the mic, for example GTA:CW, is that when I'm on the train (I mean a real one, that I take to work each day) or bus, it constantly thinks I'm blowing into the mic. So in GTA:CW, for example, anytime a cab drove nearby (in the game) it thought I was hailing it, which is pretty annoying because the game pauses for a second and tells you to enter the cab. Repeat. Pretty annoying. I wish they'd just stop with that kind of crap and instead use the mic for something genuinely fun, like letting you record your own sound effects for the game. That could be pretty entertaining. Oh well.
