I'm thinking either Samurai Showdown or TMNT Tournament Fighters. Both were released in 1993, two years before Streetfighter alpha/zero in 1995.

Wait you said SF2Turbo?... that was also 1993 but I dont recall there being super bars....nope no mention of super bars, it was just SF2 with new characters and more speed.

Samurai Shodown doesn't count, as all it did was increase your offense and defense for a short time. It didn't give you a super until the second one. Tournament Fighters seems like the most likely option, as it came out just before Samurai Shodown II, Super Turbo and any other "super bar" fighter I can think of.

And Super Street Fighter II Turbo does have super guages, but wasn't released until '94 to the best of my knowledge.

SSFII Turbo was released in '94 and did have supers. Alpha, you're prolly thinking of SSFII, not the Turbo edition, but even that was in '94.

Ah, TMNT Tournament Fighters for the SNES. Now THAT was a kickass game. It's either that or an SNK game I think.

I'm pretty sure it was the original, if Godawful, Art of Fighting for the Neo-geo.

I dunno about Art of Fighting, that game had a 'stamina bar' that effected all of the character's special moves. The Super/Desperation moves just drained it faster.

Most of the early SNK games gave you supers of some type, but they were activated by being at or below 15% health, not another super guage. And I still hate that damn stamina bar in the AOF games, since the combo engines in most of them sucked anyway.

I looked up SFIIturbo but nothing I found ever made mention of a super bar. Did they ever do a home version for any of the 16 bit systems, if so I can check through them.

You keep misreading that. SF2 Turbo didn't have supers. SUPER SF2 Turbo did, and no 16-bit system had Super Turbo. It did make appearances on the 3D0, PS1 and Saturn (via SF Collection) and there's a newer version of it coming for PS2 and Xbox on SF Anniversary Collection.

Yes super street fighter 2 : The New challangers

Introduced the 4 extra fighters.

Then shortly after

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: balanced out the game a little bit more. And added the super moves as well as a few other moves for some of the characters.

And a Super Street Fighter 2x Grand master challange.. Very similar to the one above, depending on the port is oriented to tourny play. Also had more tuning and increased difficulty

Its like the comparison to street fighter 2, street fighter 2 championship ed, street fighter 2 turbo, street fighter 2 hyper fighting, they are all street fighter 2 games, but had different setups and only certain ones were on certain systems.

Super Street Fighter 2 turbo was on the 3DO, and was on, or the GM version was in the Street Fighter collection I believe for the psx, its also on the saturn, dreamcast, in the the new collection?

Super Street Fighter 2 turbo, may have been on the famicon though, and just not have been ported over hither.

Okay, SUPER SSII Turbo, god I forgot how convoluted the history of Streetfighter 2 was.

No, there wasn't any Super Turbo on 16-bit systems. I wish there was because I would have had it for sure. And I really wanted a 3DO just for ST way back when.

The version on SFAC is Hyper SF II, a new arcade (at least in Japan) version that allows you to choose any SFII version of the 17 characters that are available. However, they took out certain glitches that existed in previous games, so it basically comes down to slightly different move lists, modified moves, and adjusted offense and defense ratings. More or less it is Super Turbo with a few more options, although I don't know if it will ever replace ST on the tournament scene.

And yes, Street Fighter does have the most convoluted histories in fighting games. Even though it's a long lasting series, there are quite a few games that probably weren't necessary for the series, and certainly weren't good to Capcom financially.
