that's the same week it has happened for the last 2 years so i would say that you can count on it

also, tru has a 45 day return policy so you can buy the games now, play them, rebuy them, and then return them on the original receipt (the risk being they better have them during the sale for you to rebuy)

andrew333

it is absolutely not fraud

as a matter of fact, the more i think about it, it really is just a price match (which tru does)

by the way, it is not fraud to buy a game cheap in one store and return it without a receipt to another store (i agree that it is a crappy thing to do but it is not fraud so long as you don't deceive them)

How bad is your life financially where you can't just support a good deal like this? It's already possible for Toys R' Us to lose money through this sale, why do you want to dick them further? They've been closing stores down for a couple years now and they have stuff like this just to draw us in. Are you trying to discourage them?

Yes it IS fraud to return a game to a store you didn't even buy it from. It IS a shitty thing to do. It's also not a price match. That doesn't even make sense.

you shouldn't really opine on things that you don't understand, especially when you have no idea to whom you are talking

maybe you should learn the legal definition of "fraud" before ranting your expert opinion

Parathod

Andrew, do you honestly know someone whose gone into a store, told the manager that they bought the game from somewhere else and attempted to return it? I worked at Circuit City during my first year of college and I got a few people here and there say they "lost the receipt" or "someone else bought them the game/CD/movie" and they "don't know where it came from" but I never once heard someone come in and blatantly say "I bought this game from another store, can I return it here", especially when the price of that game is cheaper at another store. It should be noted that being vague and stating "I don't have the receipt" knowing that you bought the game from another store is considered fraud. They're accepting the game under false pretenses that are your responsibility to clear up beforehand.

epobirs
09-20-2004, 02:31 AM
Funny you should challenge his definition of fraud.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=fraud

Seems accurate to me. Exchanging a game clearanced or otherwise deeply discounted at another store when you are fully aware it did not originate from that chain is clearly dishonesty with intent to gain at the expense of the retailer. Do not claim the retailer is not being harmed. At best they will reclaim most of the cost if they are able to sell the game at the price at which they exchanged it. Since you were able to obtain it for much less that is unlikely and the probably won't unload it until they've marked it down and then take a signidicant loss.

I did this sort of thing constantly in the early 90's. Sometimes I feel like I dingle handedly changed TRU's policy on exchanges without receipts. At first they tried to defuse the problem by only exchanging for store credit, back when TRU was a sovereign nation with ts own currency, Geoffrey Money. I'd often have games from Good Guys blowout sales with very high TRU value, especially KOEI titles with $80 SRPs. I acquired so much Geoffrey Money I'd sell it for 80% of the dollar value and still make a huge profit margin.

That wasn't even my best scam in my less honest days. So don't try to scam a scammer.

andrew333
09-20-2004, 02:32 AM
i'm not much for bickering either but if someone is going to take a nonsensical shot at what i say, i am not going to let it hang there, sorry for the inconveniece

andrew333
09-20-2004, 02:41 AM
first off, i want to be clear that i do not support this activity and never would do it (the multiple store thing)

next, it is not necessarily fraud without a deception

while many of the examples provided by parathod would constitute fraud, saying "i don't have the receipt" is not one of them (unless of course you have the receipt)

finally, the tru thing is a price matching situation, what would you do if you bought 3 games at a store and then found out a few weeks later they were selling the games at 1/3rd off (my guess is you would avail yourself of the store's price match policy if they had one which tru does)

epobirs
09-20-2004, 02:52 AM
Why would you need a price match? That typically refers to meeting the advertised price of a competing store.

If you have the receipt and can prove you made the purchase the procedure in that case is typically called price protection. Those semantic details matter when there is contention.

Parathod
09-20-2004, 02:55 AM
Actually, many people last year (at VGtalk.com, anyway) exploited this deal last year. They would buy 2 games, get the one free, then return one that they payed for. I don't think that price match would work in this case because your receipt lists the price of 2 games and then $0 for one. The thing is, everyone here now knows (or is assuming) that there is going to be a sale, so we should have nothing to be pissed off about when the sale actually comes around (unless we bought a game in the last week). Besides, this is cheapassgamer.com, not scummyassgamer.com.

andrew333
09-20-2004, 02:56 AM

Last year, I bought 4 games and go two free. But I got gift receipts and returned the four games for $200 in credit. I then waited for the late November and December releases to get the games I truly wanted. Also, my free games were SSX3 and Disgaea. This year I'll probably plan to do the game but use the credit to buy Christmas gifts for my cousin and maybe a game or two for myself. That way, since I'm going to buy all those presents anyway, at least I'll get 2 free games for it...

Obviously the cheapest of the 3 games you purchase is the free one.

I was able to get Circuit City (right down the street from TRU) to price match this last year which was cool because they had a MUCH better inventory of Gamecube titles than TRU!

TRU has had this deal every year around the end of October for about 3 years now, that I can remember.

So, expect it to happen.

Here's a neat trick too. If there is a game coming out after the discount which you really want, like say Halo2, just buy something else that's $50 and which will still be $50 in November...don't open it...when Halo2 comes out on Nov 9 exchange that game for Halo2. Some employees have given me a hard time about this in the past but their policy permits it...they just don't like it.

BBB, are you sure this doesn't start Sunday October 24th? I saw a list of deals for October, but no ROTO or deal was listed for the 27th. Do you know what ROTO it is or any other details? Just trying to find out more so I can check the deal out.

And some stores are really strict about trading games. For example, one district had all their stores not allow exchanges of games for games that came out later. I think this year they'll probably be pretty strict, so it will probably take a little work to get them to let you trade one of these games for Halo 2(all the games show up as $33 on your receipt, so thats the credit some stores will give you towards another game).

Here is how I got the information. In the Store Director's office there is a deals list from September to November. One of the things that stuck out was...

10/27 Buy 2 get third FREE (all platforms)

There were other deals and such but that was the BIG one. Also for some reason the SKN for a "Green/Orange GBA SP" is popping up. It could be a black friday exclusive SP. Don't know yet but it does sound like an odd choice.

But why would I want to lie? It is more than likely going to start on the SUNDAY... but that is the date that it had listed.

Also I am VERY strict about deals and stuff. If someone tries to do that return a game to buy a game later I flat out tell them no. Mainly because it is for the current selection of games, so if I look at their recepit they can get another game but the game has to have been released by that time... so at my store I would not allow Halo 2. But that is me.

Also i'd laugh in your face if you try to return something without a recepit. I know the deal... go run to Wal-Mart, let them deal with it. It is an excellent deal so there is no real point to trying to like go about it all shady. I am sure if you WANT Halo 2, you can just ask a buddy for $50 to buy it and give them a game want now.

I can't believe this thread is this long. It's not even confirmed yet (although it looks good sicne they do it every year)

Just what I was thinking. Anyways I am looking to get Viewtiful Joe, KOTOR and R&C: Going Commando for my first B2G1.

last year I believe it was only games 39.99 or 49.99

Hmmm, I know that wasn't the case last year B&M at least the store I went to because I picked up 3 $30 games.

I visited my local TRU today and got the 'Mummy Returns' game and movie pack for $10. (I have a fulscreen copy of the movie I got for free that will now be trade-in fodder and cut my cost for the two down to about $5. Not a great movie but some nicely done action and FX bits I like to have for reference.) I got to talking to the R-Zone section manager and he wouldn't come out an say it but offered no suggestion I was incorrect when referring to their severely depleted inventory and the upcoming B2G1 sale. He said the number of new releases should get shelves full to bursting again by then. This may mean a lack of lower priced titles but still a good sale.

BBB, thanks for the info. Makes sense it would be that week anyway since it always seems to be the week GTA comes out. I was just wondering where the info came from because I didn't see anything for 10/27, maybe I'll be able to check out the Sunday thing I saw to see if it starts that day.

You're right about being strict. I hate people that try to take advantage of the system, but if people complain enough a lot of stores will let them exchange it for another game. Of course we'll let them exchange it for another game, but they only get $33 credit so they end up paying $17 more for another game(or we make them return all 3 games and rering them at the current price without the free deal).

Also, besides the green/orange SP listed in the computer, the new Xbox 2004 Bundle is listed, too. I think its expected late October.

My past experience was that it was all platform neutral. The only thing that mattered was price, as in the lowest priced item of the three you choose is the one that will be free. If they're all of equal value it doesn't matter. Whichever one is rung third will be the free one.

Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2 is due out that week for only $20. Hopefully Nightshade and Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, both $20 now, will still be in stock. I should have some credit certificates from my TRU Visa by then so this could work out really well, less than $12 a game after tax.

A price drop on R-Type Final by then would be handy, too. EB already has it down to $20, so how about it, TRU?

It's not like they are losing money when I do this because I'm buy $50 games so my free one can be $50. It's just that this deal should be later when all the AAA titles come out. Yeah, if they for some reason gave you $50 credit for each game then they are plain stupid. And there are many of those people in TRU... espcially managers. The difference is that managers don't like to say no to customers. They feel that they are always right. But in the end it isn't my store or my money. So if you get away with it God Bless You but watch the bad karma. It will just be my job to make sure you will have to crawl to hell to get Halo 2. Eh, might be worth it.

But there are a TON of games out by then. I am already looking at Burnout 3, Rainbow Six3: BA, and SW: Battlefront! That is basically $100 gone. I might wait on RS3 mainly because I am sure I can get it cheaper.

I don't think they allow you to return the Free game because it rings up Zero in the system. They probably will fix the return policy this year so if you return and game you have to return all of them or get store credit for $33 for each games. Anyway, looking to get X-Men Legends, Burnout 3, and either Ace Combat 5 (if it's out) or Phanton Brave (if they carry it). Also I hope they will allow you to use it on $20 games although I think last year it was limited to $40 games and up.

TRU has started to apply coupons or deals, in most cases, to the entire receipt. I had a 10 off coupon, bought three things, it took 3.33 off each item [3.34 off one] so if I returned one item, i would lose that amount of the coupon.

It applies to EVERYTHING. This is to prevent people from buying something cheaper at one store and returning it to another store. The only time it is lax is around after the holidays so if you MUST do it that would be the time. You would only get credit also.

The details on the dates for the BOGO thing should be known next week most likely(the October calendar should be posted for all employees with the ROTO dates for the month). I sort of got a confirmation of the deal today as my store director wouldn't definitely confirm it, but he said at the director's meeting a few weeks ago it was brought up and he told me that there would be a good video game sale coming up. Also, this year for the TRU big book all the offers will automatically ring up at the registers, no coupons needed, so this should be an automatic offer too(the first year it did so well some stores were told to stop the offer early unless you had the coupon).

Last year the video game system deals weren't during the same weeks, but I don't think anyone is sure if they will all be the same week or different weeks yet.

Official TRU return policy is 45 days on electronics, must have receipt. 90 days on everything else with a receipt. If you don't have a receipt on electronics you can't return it. On everything else without a receipt you'll get the lowest price in the last 30 days. Of course they can reject any return they want if they have a reason too. One guy kept returning Unicrons which were at TRU for $50 and Target was clearancing them out for around $11. They stopped the guy after the first 2 times he returned these.

In general I agree, but when you look at first/second party Nintedo releases, especially for Mario, Metroid or Zelda, it is really hard to find a price drop within the first year, if not longer. For example, I don't think that I have ever seen Super Mario Sunshine lower than $29.
That means that buying something like Paper Mario during this week a great deal. The only question is what other games will hold their MSRP value for a long time so you feel like you got a good deal. Depends on the store to limit quantities. But they have the right to limit quantities. Last year, we only allowed 2 of the same title to be purchased. I think I'll have to drop some serious cash next month. I'm looking at:

Paper Mario 2
Shin Megami Tensei
Shadow Hearts: Covenant

And there are several $20 titles I want to pick up:

Jak II
Ratchet and Clank: GC
Katamari Damacy
NBA 2K5
plus a bunch of older GH titles

Any recommendations?

A couple questions...

1. Is this deal running from that Wednesday to Sunday, or is it going to be running Wednesday to Wednesday?
2. For those that worked there last year during this deal, what were shipments looking like as far as video games go? There's a couple games that come out towards the end of the deal, and I'm looking to get them with a game that came out these past couple weeks (Fable, Battlefront). Will stock be replenished at a decent clip, or are there very few shipments coming in at the time?

Question. If I pre-order GTA but then when I go pick it up request to have that $5.00 applied to something else? I am trying to guarantee myself a copy of GTA but also make GTA my free game ecause I will most likely not return it. I will wait for Halo 2 and Racthet 3. Does that make sense?

I don't know if that will work anymore. I think most TRUs are cracking down on that sort of thing and won't let you exchange the games for titles that come out after the sale period.

dtcarson
09-28-2004, 04:11 PM
Or when you exchange them, you'll only get 2/3 of the original value of the game. I don't know how they do it for B2G1, but when I had a coupon, they took X.xx off each item on the ticket, so if I returned one item, I would lose part of the value of the coupon.

After the cashier hits total, it will take off the free game. If it makes GTA your free game, the cashier will just need to get someone to adjust your $5 off coupon so that it will take $5 off your order instead of just GTA, so so don't worry, you won't lose your $5(or they can just refund the $5 back to you). But if you're asking if you can buy a cheaper game and get the more expensive game free, no you can't.

I wonder if you'll be able to get the green tag games Buy 2 get 1 free. Sometimes the promos won't ring together, but I'd assume they would ring up together. Hopefully it won't make you only do 1 or the other.

1. How is their release date compared to eb & gamestop as well as other major retailers? Is it somewhat near their release calendars?

that is why TRU stopped doing it

Ok, I just got off the phone with my local TRU (Spokane,Washington) and the manager said that his store was going to start Oct. 27. However, he also commented that games bought during this time could not be returned unless something was physically wrong with the disc (I don't know if this was B.S. or not, but it does make sense) Also, he said that only games that had been released prior to the sale could be purchased. (Once again probably B.S. and I can't imagine the employees knowing the release dates of games other than the major ones ie. Halo2. :)

The TRU ads for 10/10 and 10/17 are up. Both ads do not have the Buy 2 get 1 free(I'll post some of the deals from them in another post). There is no promotion according to the TRU calendar starting October 27th, but there is an ad the 24th, so that could be the date the sale starts. The ad should be available next week for the 24th. Other than that, hopefully we'll get a confirmation soon on the real start date and if it is really happening.

both ways your ripping off the storesThat's a very bad thing to do. IMO, it's just wrong to buy multiple copies then take them back at other stores to gain more money to get what you want most, because that's just being selfish and proving you don't have much respect for others. I still find ways of getting every game I want without ripping stores off.

As for the sale, yes I agree about it starting on a weird day, because it should be Sunday.

The way it looks now, I'm gonna keep my eye on:
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (If TRU gets it in)
Taiko Drum Master
Neo-Contra
Ace Combat 5 (if it's out in time)
Ape Escape Pumped & Primed
King of Fighters Maximum Impact

Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne
Ace Combat 5 (if the get it in time)

Well, for one other CAGs might call you out on this. Second, I believe TRU has wisened up on this and won't let you return two games you paid for and keep the third for free. Third, I also believe TRU will not let you trade in games purchased during these deals for games that come out after the time period of the sale.

I certainly hope no one abuses these deals. I'm getting rather annoyed with all the posters trying to find a way to sweeten the deal more. Don't get greedy. That is all.

We'll since you put it that way, since you have worked hard for your money, I guess its fine to blatantly abuse, and defraud a company. This sale is done for two reasons from a buisness perspective. One to move existing stock QUICKLY and to gain goodwill and market presence in anticipation for the Holiday season (Nov and Dec). You are abusing both goals. First you are returning a older game for a newer game. Albiet that they are the same value, but how would you like it if you had to sell a returned Van Helsing or a Catwoman and lose a stock item of GTA:SA or a Time Crisis. A double whammy, you have to resell a crappy game and you lose a good selling title. Not to mention you (2nd point) will be risking stockout for San Andreas for little Tommy boy who wants this game for Christmas. I will not be supprised if people like you ruin this promotionfor us next year. There is a special place in hell for you people.

What about sharing someone's food at a restaurant without paying for the sharing charge? Have you ever videotaped something without expressed written permission? Ripped off the tag of a mattress? You self rightious nit wits are so full of the brown stff. It's real simple - if you don't want to take advantage of a good deal, THEN DON'T. But don't act so high and mighty and insult those individuals who at the very least are being honest with themselves. Furthermore, it makes me laugh to read about how some of us are "taking advantage" of MILLION DOLLAR corporations. I encourage these dolts to read up on CAPTALISM. This is cheapassgamer.com not dumbassgamer.com. Sheeeeeeeesh!

It may be legal but its unethical. Toyrus is a struggling corporation thats propbably wont last long and to take advantage of it right now i think is rather mean. Corporations are made up of many stakeholders from employees to shareholders, ripping off the MILLION DOLLAR corporation is really ripping of men and women like oursleves. As for your comment on READ up on Capitalism, Modern Capitalism is not everything goes laissez faire but rather Companies and inviduals now have many responsiblitles other than profit such as Stakeholder responsibility, Einviromental Responsiblilty, Ethical Responsibility, and Social Responsibility. The Capitalsim that you believe in is dead and gone and rightly so.

Dude, are you serious? It is "rather mean." "RATHER MEAN?! " If your conscious is bothering you soooooo much, maybe you should start paying full price for all your games. Why even bother using this site at all? Afterall, we wouldn't rip off the precious shareholders and stakeholders. That would be AWFUL! Sob. Sob.

Anybody else planning on taking advantage of EA's dealin conjunction with this to get 4 games for the price of 2?

Nah, I stop buy EA sports games since Konami's Winning Eleven and SEGA's ESPN NHL 2K games came out.

This is for all games on every system? Right when San Andreas comes out? Hmmm... thats a tough one, I really can't think of anything I'd want other than SA, and I'm not totally sure I can't wait for that either.

BTW, is this for all systems? I heard mention of GC being seperate dates, which sucks considering MK: DD would pretty much be the only other choice to consider.... I still can't think of a third game.....
