Hey all,

My DSL is getting activated on Wednesday, but my router won't be coming in until next week.

Do you guys think I can still use my DSL safely without a router for like a week?

Also, would it be possible if I can play online with my Playstation 2? Can't I just disconnected the line from my computer and put it in the PS2 Network Adapter? Or is that too easy to be true?

Thanks!

You can disconnect it from the computer and plug it into the ps2, I do it all the time.

There isn't much a hacker can do to a PS2, at least not anything I've heard about. If you hook up your computer be absolutely sure you have a software firewall running. Scans are so prevalent now that vulnerable systems are being infected in just a few minutes after first exposure to the outside world.

If I disconnect it from the PC and plug the line into the PS2,and keep on doing that back and forth, I heard that it destroys the speed of my DSL ? Is this true?

Thanks

you could just buy an extra network cord and a "switch"....

Well I am getting a router next week so I don't need to buy anything extra..

I just wanted to know if I do keep on changing the cable from the computer to the PS2 and vice versa, will it damage my connection speed? Because that's what I heard.

It will have no bearing whatsoever on connection speed. I cannot imagine what gave anyone that impression.

No, it won't damage anything.

HEre is what some people said at GameFAQS, either they have no idea what they are talkin about, or I must have not really understood them..

1. Well, unplugging the PC from the cable modem destroys your speed since it can't do anything online, so I think sharing the bandwidth of the PC while you're playing a game online is a small price to pay.

Unless you meant just idly slowing it down just by being plugged in, which is wrong.

2. no i meant taht bysharing ur connection with ur ps2 it slows it down alitele, u dont really notice it but it does trust me.

What exactly are these people saying?

Thanks!

Your router won't impact your Internet performance. However, after you install the router, it may block some ports, which you may need to open.

I wasn't asking if my router will have an impact on my internet performance, I was asking if I keep on switching of the cable to play on the PS2 and switching it to play on the PC after and vice versa, will it slow down my internet connection?

Thanks!

It won't slow down your connection. I can't speak for DSL, but as far as cable service providers are concerned, some allow you to fast switch connections like you want to do; with others you have to go throuh a process of rebooting your modem, router (which you don't have yet) and PC/PS2/Xbox/whatever. There's only one way to find out for sure: try it and find out.

As far a firewall goes, If you're not running Windows Xp's firewall ZoneAlarm is free from http://www.zonelabs.com It's the only free one that I can think of right now.
