If you create a PlayStation Network account, you can save information about the trophies you have earned on the PlayStation Network server. You can also view you trophy collection in the [Profile] screen under (Friends) and compare your trophy earning status with your Friends' status.



Trophy information is automatically saved on the PlayStation Network server under the following conditions:

When you sign in to the PlayStation Network and select (Game) > [Trophy Collection]
When you select [Compare Trophies] in the [Profile] screen under (Friends)


Trophy information cannot be copied to storage media or backed up using the Backup Utility feature. If you want to save trophy information, it is recommended that you create a PlayStation Network account and save the information on the PlayStation Network server.

Yes, that's only for trophies. Unlockables, such as characters, are in the game saves, which are saved solely on the system. You can back them up to a removable media though.
