so it looks like blue-ray is official. that means it can read dvds and cds, so that gives me hope for backwards compatability. the thing that caught my eye was the "having 54GB of storage capacity"... *crosses fingers for hard drive built in* but i think blue-ray was a give in, why wouldnt sony back up their own media

Unfortunately it sounds like the discs can hold 54GB so I would not expect to have a hard drive built in. 27 GB per layer and a two layer disc is coming soon.

In the current spec it's a double-sided two layer disc, just like DVD. Realistically, the storage will be 27 GB (raw) as the other surface will be covered with identifying artwork.

They can confirm whatever they want, but if the tech they want to use isn't cheap enough for the people to buy it you can forget it.

No one is going to pay $500 for a console just cause sony wanted to use unecessarily large disk media. No one is going to make a game that freakin big - it's all devs can do to fill up a regular dvd (except R*).

SONY does not want another Beta Max, so they will do whatever possible to avoid that. They know beter than to outprice themselves out of the market (watched SEGA make that mistake)

I suspect the Blue ray move is to defeat pirating, whether they fill the disk or not isnt really an issue.

I don't see how - blue ray disk readers/burners are already in development.

Just like they avoided the DRE fiasco?

Hard drives are old news. You will most likely see flash memory as the new storage media in next gen's consoles. They are smaller and cheaper.

And on a side note I really hope that the new ps2 model is the future of console development. It is high time large, bulky consoles go the way of the dodo.

You make it sounds as if they WANTED DREs. It was caused by a flaw in the design and they owned up and fix it now.

I'd hope that blue ray might have a better copy preotection system but who knows, The read/writers might be a bit on the expensive side.

DREs is not going to cost SONY all that much to fix compared to the loss of R&D and the failure of the new video format they are backing

Also, everyone knows about DVD's, but how many people know about DRE's?

My point is that, of course, they didn't want DRE's, but they F'd up and look what happened. I am suggesting that something similar could happen if they once again lack the foresight they needed to prevent DREs, and trying to force new, expensive media, that is not widespread on us does not look good.

Sony didnt know DREs where going to happen untill they happened. They messed up, lots of technology messes up, They denied it for a few months untill they realized it was a real problem and not just a few people trying to get over on them and offered to fix them. Yes it sucks that it happened but if they finally did the right thing about it.

If GC's started exploding tomarrow I think we can safely say we didnt know it was going to happen. :D

As for new technology we'll just have to wait and see how much it costs, companies take take hits in the millions of dollars early on just to get units in peoples homes so I doubt it'll be any different this time.
