Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced a new multi-player racing title entitled Driift (working title), which will be released as a WiiWare title from July.

Viewed from above, Driift is a fast-paced racer that allows up to eight players to race each other, using cartoon-style chars. Featuring twelve different tracks based on four themed environments – cityscape, hills, snow and a desert oasis – players can also select one of 32 vehicles from four categories. Each category is tailored for use within the different environments, with variations of speed, acceleration and handling and grip levels making specific vehicles ideal for particular locations.

Driift’s multi-player modes allow users to play using combinations of Wii Remotes, Nunchucks and Classic Controllers, and seven game modes are on offer. These range from the single-player and multi-player championships, and Team Race, wherein participants are divided into two teams, with the winner determined by those that accrue the most points. The VIP mode elects one player per team as a VIP vehicle, who must be protected at all costs from the opposition cars, with the removal of the VIP car resulting in a win for the attacking team.

Driift also uses ‘Contamination’ where a player is marked contagious and must contaminate very other player within a set period, while the ‘Cold Potato’ mode charges the user with collecting said vegetable and holding on to it for as long as possible! Finally, the ‘Meteorite’ option sees players embarking on a normal race, while trying to avoid a series of meteors as they fall from the sky.

“We established our European development studio to create games for mobile phone devices. After a successful start and positive, high-value products, they are now moving to other formats, too,” commented Martin Schneider, European Marketing and PR Director for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “This WiiWare title offers a new approach in a more traditional console business and we are looking forward to this download title and further contributions from our European development studio.”http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/1040/konamidriiftscreen01.jpg

Complete memories of Super Off-Road.
Don't see online, but hope the local multi and single are fun enough.
Then again they could botch the controls and ruin the game altogether for me.

I wished it had weapons like rock n' roll racing.

Micro Machines was it's own (great) thing - the tracks spanned much more than a single screen.

I'm into the idea of this game. It seems hard to screw up.

I didn't see online specifically mentioned either, but it does say "up to eight players", which implies WiFi play

definitely looks cool, will get if it's any good.

Not really. You could have four wiimotes and then four GC controllers plugged in. That'd do the trick. Some VC titles function this way - Bomberman '93 I think.

Anyway, this has been a genre I've only tentatively associated with, primarily with Micro Machines on the NES (as mentioned earlier). For some reason, it was too much fun to play the tank races. It became this weird predator/prey thing where you'd try to trap the other guy just so you could shoot them. Sometimes you entered into a standoff/stalemate situation, blasting each other as you respawned. Good times.

I'm guessing when a title like this gets announced that fails to have Wifi incorporated, it's like a third party's way of telling Nintendo that their online system is shit, FCs are shit, why put up with all this shit when we don't have to. Either that or they are lazy. Whatever works.

In the end, I hope the game is good. Does make me want Micro Machines NES with wifi though.

Actually, note how it says "Driift’s multi-player modes allow users to play using combinations of Wii Remotes, Nunchucks and Classic Controllers". That is *not* remote+nunchuck, rather, remote OR nunchuck OR Classic Controller. So 4 players are using the digital pad on the remote while 4, tethered to another player, are using the nunchuck or classic controller. I'm not sure how well the game will play with a digital pad, but it might work fine. We shall see.

I'm not sure how you arrived at this conclusion. "Combinations of" doesn't really imply anything - it's purposely vague.

Also, it's a "directional pad." Not digit/digital.

Damn I love all those games you guys listed, Micro Machines was the best though because of the variety in vehicles you could race in. Although Super Off Road was a lot of fun to play in the arcade using the steering wheel.

I get what you're saying, crunchewy. I believe the horribly reviewed Bust-a-Move Bash used that technique, where you had one player using a Wiimote and someone else had to be tethered to you using a Classic Controller. It's a clever way to get 8 player multiplayer, as unless I'm crazy, I believe there is a technical limitation of 7 players using Wiimote + Gamecube controllers... something to do with the first player port.

No use speculating for now, lets just hope for WFC support.
