Sweet, what a grand game. I beat it on PS2, but the multiplayer will be amazing. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best fighter since SF Alpha 3.

Or is it just wishful thinking?

MvC2 will be Day 1 purchase for me.
Matter a fact, after I heard that it'll come to XBLA I sold my Xbox copy of it (horrible emulation too).

Hope that July rumor is true.

Holy fucking shit. Now I can stop regretting not buying it for $20 on Xbox so many years ago. Day one purchase. Would be extra amazing if it was upgraded for HD, but whatever gets it on Live soonest is fine with me!

While the game is probably one of the worst fighting games ever when it comes to balancing, I am excited for the game. I do wonder if it will have online play though, as the reason the Xbox 1 version didn't have it is because the contract would inevitably run out for the game and Marvel didn't want people playing it online once the contract ran out.

BlueSwim
04-17-2009, 04:15 AM
From the FGT...I hate to say it, but I think you two are right on the $20 price. I bet Capcom PR already has two different spins for that price too. "It's $20 because of the licensing fee Marvel charges." or "It's a real bargain considering retail copies are $60-$80. We're giving you a deal!":roll::roll::roll::roll:

Remember though, when we charge you 50 cents for every special move you pull off in a future fighting game, we did it because the fans wanted it and we wanted to do it for the fans to provide further options in expanding gameplay.

KaneRobot
04-17-2009, 10:10 AM
I'd kind of be surprised if this were 1600, if this is legit it's highly unlikely this is going to be a total revamp like SF2 HD Remix was, they would have told everyone by now. It really should be 800 considering the age but since it's one of the most requested XBLA titles and fairly rare on the XBox/PS2 1200 seems likely.

I have the DC version but I'll probably still buy this for convienence sake. Haven't played it in a while.

If this real I'm not surprised. Capcom seems to like doing downloadable games.... also they could probably find a way to squeeze some extra cash out of you if they do it this way. If this is going to happen I'm going to assume we'll hear something about it at E3. A few of the Capcom guys were on the Giant Bomb podcast and said Capcom would have a few announcements to make at E3.

I already have the PS2 version of MvC2, but I'll drop 1600 Live points or $20 at the PlayStation Store on it. It would be cool if later they would come out an HD Remix version of it, but with 56 characters, it would take way more time on the graphical upgrade than SSF2T HD Remix did.

Official announcement possibly coming within the next few days:

The demand for a downloadable release (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/17/take-this-marvel-vs-capcom-2-achievement-list-for-a-ride/) of Marvel vs Capcom 2 is high; we don't need to tell you that. When the game was rated by the ESRB (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/13/esrb-rates-marvel-vs-capcom-2-for-ps3-xbox-360/), we found ourselves as giddy as a Sentinel hunting down rogue mutants. Don't even get us started on a possible teaser site for the game: tu4ar.com (http://www.tu4ar.com/).

The domain appears to be a reference to the catchy character select song "Take You for a Ride," and further inspection of the site reveals a giant "2" (in the background of the countdown clock), which is similar in font to the Marvel vs Capcom 2 logo. The teaser countdown appears to imply that in 6 days the site will evolve into a real web site, complete with stuff to click and actual content. (Presumably, this countdown could coincide with a press embargo being established at CAPTIVATE09 this week.)

That's not all, though. There are two telling domains that are connected to the URL in question: http://dev02.capcomusa.net/ and http://dev02.capcomusa.net/mvc2gmt/. If you click the latter link, the same teaser from tu4ar.com shows up. Oh, and a Capcom Unity tweet (http://twitter.com/Capcom_Unity/status/1576746770) and recent auction (http://www.capcom-unity.com/snow_infernus/blog/2009/04/20/unity_auctions_signed_swag_international_goodness? num=5&pg=2) offer further evidence as to the creator of tu4ar.com.

Still, it's important to remain skeptical. All of this evidence -- compelling as it may be -- is by no means official confirmation. We'll update just as soon as the countdown expires and Capcom announces ... well, whatever it's going to announce.http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/21/possible-marvel-vs-capcom-2-teaser-site-countdown/

Here's more info, including the PSN :-| demo.

It’s based on the Dreamcast code base – While the PS2 and Xbox versions of MvC2 were great, there are a few $$$$ling issues in them that have caused the competitive community to continue using the Dreamcast version of the game. We wanted to bring you the very best version of the game, so we listened to the community and started with the Dreamcast.

2. There is online – With the game being developed by Backbone, we are using largely the same, critically acclaimed net code that we used in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix and with that will come our player match quarter mode/lobby system that has proven so popular. Naturally leaderboards and some form of stats tracking (details to be provided at a later date) will also be in the mix. So on the net code side, you’re pretty much assured the best fighting game net code ever created for consoles.

3. HD upscaling options – Given that most people play Xbox 360s and PS3s on HD TVs, it’s important to help make the game look better. We’ve refined our real-time sprite filtering to use even more advanced techniques and we’re providing two upscaling options for the sprites… one we’ve termed “Crisp” the other we’ve termed “Smooth”. It’s a matter of personal preference for which one you’ll enjoy more. For purists, if you’d like you can use the “Classic” setting, which leaves the sprites completely unfiltered. Because the filtering is applied in real-time, you can change these settings on the fly, mid-match if you choose. Our producer will be showing you some comparison screenshots in the coming days to better clarify the differences. The backgrounds in MvC2 are all 3D, and when rendered at higher resolutions look fantastic. The original textures and assets from the Dreamcast were actually much higher quality than the Dreamcast could really display at the time and when shown in HD, the impact is really quite amazing.

4. Widescreen – Again, with most people playing on HD displays, we wanted to figure out how to implement widescreen support. To do so, the camera field of view was widened (which we’re able to do because of the 3D backgrounds effectively running off the “edges” of the 4:3 scenario) and there are a few camera tricks that minimize any impact on the gameplay. Play area is unchanged, and this is not a zoom and crop like HD Remix was. To put it simply, the gameplay area will be in a 4:3 field, while the viewing area will be widescreen. At the same time, for purists and competitive play, a 4:3 option (with vertical bars on the left and right) still exists.

5. No unlocking – While we love giving people unlockables in games, for this outing, there’s not a lot of surprises in terms of what characters are in the game. All 56 characters will be unlocked at the start for immediate play, again great for tournament play where players won’t need to mess with save game data or hacked versions (/shame).

6. Music Options – We love MvC2 but the original “jazzy” music has long been criticized even by ardent fans. Independent music volume controls and support of custom soundtracks on PS3 and 360 we deemed an important feature. Purists will still have what they love and fans of customization are also served.
And as an added bonus, some of you will get to play it sooner than you think. The US PlayStation network will have the demo available for download this week (Europe’s PSN should follow not far after). Surprise. :)

I don't see how anybody could think Capcom would give this game an HD Remix considering how the vast majority of the characters in the original were recycled sprites from every Capcom fighting game in the late 90s. Especially since SSF2THD with it's 17 characters experienced multiple delays.

really I'm disappointed by this, I know this game took forever to unlock all the characters but It can be fun, I personal would of liked if they revamped the unlocks, maybe less/more points or something like that, and points for online battle and skip the lame wait in training get a ton of point unlocked method.

And also you can pretty much bet this will be 15$... if not 20$ and my cheap ass may think twice cause, I have the game now. and is 20$ worth chessments and online.... hmm maybe....

I would have totally waited 6+ months for them to take their time with this and give it the HD overhaul. Disappointed that they'll just "smooth" it out, but I'll probably still bite day one.

Wasn't the Japanese DC version online back in the day? Maybe they just used some of that netcode to get it online. I also kinda liked unlocking stuff. I hope they still make you unlock the colors of characters.

Anyone use a VGA box on their DC and play MvC2? Remember how the backgrounds looked awesome but the sprites looked like ass? I bet this this is how the game will look in HD. But I don't care.

I have never been this excited to re-buy a game I already own.

It's being made by Backbone, so they'll throw one of their sprite renderes in it that they used to ruin classic games. The Sprites will look a little better, but they won't be pixelated messes.

Anywho... Well, finally. This game will be probably the most frustrating Online fighter ever! XD Thr REAL Challenge in this game will be making the underappreciated characters look awesome online!

Here's My SUNDAYS BEST! (War Machine)

Would be funny to see some real awesome Amingo's, or great Marrows... SOO many characters, at least everyone won't be a Ken, Ryu, Sagat!

The XBLA/PSN version has two filters to smooth out the character sprites. You can still play it without either of the filters, if you so choose.

There is an obvious difference between the sprites and the backgrounds, of course, but it really isn't that bad(coming from someone who has never played it before, at least).

Yeah it was, infact it was a heavy part of the character unlocking process. 1/3 of the characters could only be unlocked by online play, the other 1/3 by bringing the VMU to the arcades, and the last 3rd by playing at home. You couldn't imagine how disappointed I was when I imported it.

Well considering my XBox copy went for over $60 (or was it $70?) on eBay, this easily pays off for the XBLA title and some money towards a nice stick.

Wonder if the TE stick for MVC2 was a joke or what.

Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/5230501/marvel-vs-capcom-2-old-graphics-vs-new-graphics) has posted a side-by-side comparison of the old MvC2 graphics verses the new graphics. The new ones are WAY less pixelated than the old graphics, but they are a little blurry. Seems like a good way to do things if they aren't going the HD Remix route.

Gonna be rockin the demo soooo hard (please have online play in the demo, please?!).
Glad/sad about unlockables though. It's fun to have things to unlock and look forward too, but honestly, on the DC, I'd just go into training mode and leave it running overnight, in the morning quit and get my points, and then while I was away during the day back to training mode. So it's not like I legit earned the unlocks anyway :p

I got (1)TE Stick modded with Red Sanwas and (1)SE stick where I shoved the parts of the TE stick into. And another TE stick on the way to me. This is actually my first time using sticks, but now that I've been using sticks for a little over a month, I can't got back to a controller.

If you do plan on getting a TE stick for the 360, go ahead and pre-order from buy.com. It took them exactly a week to fulfill my order and ship it out. I will be receiving it this friday. Buying an SE stick and modding it with Sanwas will cost you about the same amount (minus $10-$20) unless you enjoy waiting weeks for parts, removing screws, and unplugging pins.

That's the exact same thing I thought. I looked at the date, and it said July 22 there is no way two big xbla games is coming out the same day. MVC2 is part of the summer of arcade, and it will come out sometime in August. I wish it would come out sooner. Mark of the Wolves will be tight also but I have it on PS2 and the DC. Again, it'll be tough to put aside brand new games for an old one.

I'm more inclined to pick up KOF '98 UM or KOF 2K2 UM if those ever come out.

All these games could've been spaced better and price more reasonably. I'd probably get MvC2 for 800 points even if I didn't play it much right away but I'm more hesitant at the 1200 point mark.

Compared to the ridiculous prices on eBay, $15 for MvC2 is very reasonable especially when you have online multiplayer included. Then again, it seems like no matter what comes out people want it 400 points less than what it is announced at. I really don't understand that, but it's moot to me.

Also, considering that fighting game popularity is experiencing something of a re-birth out of niche status thanks to SF II HD Remix and SF IV, spacing isn't a problem for me. I'm just glad high profile titles are coming out at all.

I'll probably be picking up all three, and if I don't have time for one right away, I'm sure I'll be able to put plenty of time into it down the line.

Probably cause just about everything that comes out on XBLA is about 400 points over priced, but then again I'm a cheap ass gamer how doesn't like DRM restrictions, 15$ reasonable yes, very reasonable ....... I don't know about that. the only real selling point in the online play.

Reasons why $15 is more then reasonable...

1. It's Marvel vs. Capcom 2. We've been begging for this since forever.

2. 16:9 presentation. That's right, it's going to fit perfectly on your shiny HDTV.

3. Online play by the SFIIHDR guys. The online play is going to be smooooth. These guys have a track record for lag free if not close to it online play.

4. Improved sprites, if you want. The option to turn on smoothing so it looks awesome looking on your shiny HDTV.

2-4 aren't free to do.

You make a great point, brother. Compared to ebay prices, this is a very reasonable price. Compared to SFIIHD, it's not though. I look at the beautiful graphics and superb online code as an example for 1200 points well spent. They could've charged 1600 points for it and I would've been happy. Unfortunately, we're not getting the HD treatment for this. We're just getting online play that might or might not be as good as SFIIHD.

Maybe because DLC can't be re-sold after you purchase it? Since you can't purchase a used version, consumers should want it cheaper. But that lack of competition also helps to keep prices high. At least with disc based media you can sell it to help lower the initial price when you are finished with it.

In terms of DD games, that's always the first point people here on CAG point out... I understand that this will hurt turnaround, but in the end it's beneficial to everyone in the end except retail game stores, which is good.

I know what you mean. I'll love being able to play with everyone from the get go, but I'll miss unlocking everyone. I don't plan to play much online as I'm not a pro player and I think get beat in a matter of seconds would just frustrate me.

I think the reason that it's always brought up here at CAG is because we're basically all cheap asses here! ;)

The no re-selling aspect hasn't stopped be from buying DLC from XBLA or any place else. But it's made me a hell of a lot more selective. And I tend to wait for sales.

I'm actually happy they added this feature. I spent a hell of a lot of time unlocking everything in the PS2 version. As fun as that was I really wouldn't want to go through the hassle of doing that again.

Well if you trade in $50 worth of games on Amazon, you get 50% off games and accessories, including arcade sticks.

I'm going to get one of the real nice ones for about $10 out of pocket.

still sitting on my points for this game. I have a feeling im gonna be underwhelmed since I have been waiting 4 months+ for this release.
The dreamcast version works fine. I doubt people care that much about slightly updated graphics. Im in the boat where I would rather use my new 360 stick to play mvc2 instead of using my old dreamcast one.

I don't care about the graphics. I care about the online play, and that (even while I'm unemployed) I can afford $15, whereas I couldn't afford the prices the older releases of the game were going for.

A stick would be great, but I really can't afford one of those. Probably wouldn't save me from getting my ass kicked, anyway.

I don't get the fightpad. In SF4, how do you hit the top 3 buttons to use some of the ultras? In MvC2, 1 of storm's moves requires 2 buttons that are diagonal from each other.

1 2 3
4 5 6

How do you push 2 and 4 at the same time without messing up? Either way, I already have a SF4 stick (not the TE one).

Same here. I might look into the pads down the road, but this will be the first fighting game I'm getting for my 360 (although that's mostly due to lack of money, rather than how I feel about the genre). I'm going to give it a go with the 360 controller, but honestly...even with a pad or stick, I'd probably get my ass handed to me anyway.

Do we know how the controls map on the 360 controller yet?

In SF4 you can assign buttons to hit all 3 punches or all 3 kicks. On the fight pad it's the left and right triggers.

@Ayu255: I hold the fightpad in my left hand normal while using my left thumb to control the pad. I use my right hand as if I were using the buttons on an arcade stick. It works well for me. I did it even on the stock 360 pad before I got the fight pad. Works well there too.

Same here. My usual strategy for MvC was to pick Ryu (because I've played enough Street Fighter to use him decently), Spider-Man (because I think he's cool), or Wolverine (ditto). That worked against my friends who'd pick Gambit

Let's put it this way: the extent of my MvC2 knowledge is that there is a God Tier, and I'm pretty sure Storm is a part of it. Other than that...nada. :D

Do any of the experienced players have any suggestions for those of us who are new to all of this? Any websites we should be reading, or tactics we should know? How do we learn to not suck?

I usually just rotate out of which Marvel characters I like best and try to remember what combos I figure out on my own. I wish I was better at it to warrant getting a better pad for it but I should be able just having fun with the regular controller.

eh infinites aren't the issue since the damage is scaled. For example magneto's rom infinite does keep the player from doing anything but ure not gonna kill anyone with it since its very low damage (super jump >lk, lk> airdash df > lk, lk) Once you do a reset back into the rom....thats where u get the pain. Im not that good at the game but i did play with a lot of people that were. Storm Sent DHC is sick..like 80-100% damage? BLARG

Sadly its my finals this week. definitely going to be playing the hell out of it all next weekend. just will miss Wednesday and Thursday online gaming.
