Ignition and Tecmo Present NOSTALGIA for Nintendo DS™
Prepare to Lift-Off in September 2009
Glendale, CA – April 28, 2009 – Ignition Entertainment Ltd., a UTV
Enterprise, a worldwide publisher and developer of videogames, and Tecmo, in
conjunction with Matrix Software and Red Entertainment, invite gamers to
takeoff on a nostalgic journey through time and space with Nostalgia for
Nintendo DS™ - launching September 2009. Set in an alternate-reality
version of 19th-century Earth, Nostalgia casts you as Eddie, a headstrong
Londoner who amasses a group of memorable companions to traverse the world
in his steampunk-inspired zeppelin. As you navigate the open skies, you’ll
explore mysterious foreign locales, slay all manner of fantastical enemies,
complete a variety of thrilling quests, and ultimately, save the world from
unfathomable evil.
Developed by Matrix Software (Dragon Quest V PS2, Final Fantasy III-IV DS),
in association with Red Entertainment (Gungrave, Bonk, Thousand Arms),
Nostalgia brings together a powerful think-tank of old-school Japanese RPG
development talent to present a stunning new vision in gaming. Produced by
Keisuke Kikuchi (Fatal Frame, Tokobot) and directed by Naoki Morita (Sakura
Taisen), with art direction by Yoshiteru Tsujino (Far East of Eden), airship
design by Takuhito Kusanagi (Grandia, Blue Submarine No.6, Samurai 7), and
enemy design by Keita Amemiya (Iria- Zeiram the Animation, Kamen Rider),
Tecmo has amassed an all-star dream team of industry veterans to forge a
brand new DS adventure that hearkens back to the classic glory days of
Japanese role-playing games.
According to Nostalgia producer, Keisuke Kikuchi, “I knew this game had such
potential when I saw Mr. Morita’s project book. It is an adventure game set
in another Earth, offering an enjoyable story that involves various
different cultures in many diverse locations. The key element that brings
the game together is the airship, the conveyance which fits its game system
and world-view. I wanted to make this idea into a product for everyone to
play.”
“We feel deeply honored for the opportunity to bring Tecmo’s esteemed
Japanese Nintendo DS role-playing game “Nostalgeo no Kaze” to an entirely
new audience as Nostalgia,” said Shane Bettenhausen, New Business
Development Director of Ignition Entertainment. “Amid a sea of remakes and
rehashes, this endearing adventure blazes its own unique path with deeply
engrossing gameplay systems, but it also hearkens back to the classic RPGs
of yesteryear with its unforgettable characters and universal narrative
themes.”
Key Game Features:
• Ambitious, fully 3D polygonal graphical engine offers dramatic, sweeping
camera angles and impressive vistas rarely seen in a DS title.
• Cohesive, anime-inspired art direction that effectively captures the
game’s turn-of-the-century charm.
• Travel to incredibly unique, non-traditional RPG locales via airship
including London, New York, Cairo, Africa, and Russia.
• Features two distinct combat engines: One is a brisk, turn-based
close-quarters melee between your party members and monsters; while the
other offers thrilling, large-scale airship battles. In addition, your
battle skills are scored at the conclusion of each conflict, inspiring
strategic mastery.
• Handy in-game notebook feature keeps track of people, monsters, airships
and items you've run across.
• Plenty of user-defined customization, allowing the player to trick out his
or her airship with various weapons, armor types, and special skill attacks.
The player can also choose character-specific skills from a branching tree
for a more personalized experience.
• Explore a variety of diverse, engaging dungeons that include brain bending
puzzles and tricky Indiana Jones-style traps.
• Optional quest system inspires players to approach the adventure from a
less linear perspective, extending the life of the gameplay experience.

I think that impressions from importers were pretty positive when it released last November, and with Matrix behind it, the graphics look good. Here's the trailer from TGS:

I often have to wonder who they get to write the English trailers for some of these JRPGs. I often like watching the Japanese ones better because than I can imagine for myself what kind of banalities they're using to describe the game.

I don't see the point. It's not like JRPGs have really changed much over the past 25 years to begin with. Final Fantasy VII was the last time any major change really happened in play style, but never in story.

I really hope this game is good, as I love old-school RPGs (evidenced by the fact that the only new releases I enjoyed this year were old-school RPGs), but I am not keeping my hopes up. It seems like a cheap knock-off of Skies of Arcadia. If it gets good reviews and impressions I will probably buy it, but I don't plan on buying it day one unless those come out before release.

What does this post even mean? We shouldn't play any RPGs after FFVII?

Gamestop says October 22nd, Amazon says October 27th. So somewhere around there.
And oh my god was Black Sigil a giant piece of shit. Easily one of the worst RPGs and games I've ever played. There's NO. FUCKING. WAY. this game will be that bad, trust me.

Yet strangely, I was asked in a Gamestop recently if I wanted to preorder it. I was absolutely floored that the guy was able to spot my potential interest in the game (I'd just bought a used GBA copy of Tactics Ogre). Unfortunately for him, I already have it pre-ordered at Amazon. I too am shocked its not getting more buzz.

Anyone preorder this from Amazon? If so, Ignition will send you a free copy of the artbook that is NOT otherwise available to purchasers of the game. The only other way to get it was to be a member of the press and it was sent to you with your review copy.
How to get it:
1. Preorder on Amazon.
2. Take a screenshot of your order details including order number.
3. Send the screenshot and a mailing address to news@ignitionusa.com.
4. You should get a confirmation email saying they'll send you out the artbook "shortly after release." I did this and got the confirmation email just a couple hours after sending. Quantities limited to 200 artbooks.

Yeah, I was going to shut this one down because it is a newer one but it seems to be more popular, so whatever... But someone had to intentionally ignore the other as it was the current (and thus at or near the top) around when the game came out. And by the way, the other thread is only a few posts down - hardly off the first page or anything ;). The DS board doesn't get much action so even though it has been a whole day it is only 4 threads behind this one.
As for the preorder bonus thing, I emailed that person and got a response that they are out of town till next Weds. Oh well, hopefully they have some left then. If not, oh well, it's not like I even knew about this till you posted it anyway ;).

It's one of those games that when you think about it when you're not playing it, you're highly offended at how much it sucks. But then when you actually play it, it's not too bad. There's nothing truly horrible about the game except the asstastic story, characters, and dialogue, but it is very generic and mediocre.

That's probably an unfair standard for most games. :D
I got it today and have put it about 3-4 hours so far. It's not great, but it does what it claims - makes me nostalgic. I love old school RPGs, and while this game isn't about to make me forgot (far superior) games like FFIV or VI, I'm having some fun with it. So far the gameplay is a bit shallow, but I'm hoping it'll get just a little bit deeper as I play more - which I'm definitely going to.

The game's formula:
Destitute-man's Skies of Arcadia + Every groan-inducing RPG cliche imaginable
The fact that used copies are already readily obtainable lets me know that I can't be the only one who thinks this game is disappointing. I can't believe people on Gamefaqs are defending the game based on its title.... "B-b-b-b-ut.... it's nostalgic!" This game doesn't make me nostalgic at all; it just makes me wish I were still playing Persona PSP or another great, old-school game that doesn't rely on shamelessly ripping off one of Sega's best RPGs and carbon-copying every JRPG cliche in the book to the point where you can actually predict the plot well in advance.

Just beat it, 25:30. Last battle was pretty intense. Keep your health topped off as much as possible. Annoyingly that was the only time I had a dead party member at the end of a battle.

My opinion stayed pretty much the same throughout, but allow me to expand upon it.
The story, while it improved slightly towards the end, wasn't really engaging, but at least served to move you along to the various locations.
I generally prefer more linear dungeons, and in this game they were a must; if you happened to miss a weapon upgrade you could be at a serious disadvantage since treasure chests were the source of literally half of the equipment found during the game.
The overworld was sorta bland, and the airship battles, while a nice break from the party battles, were way too much work for what little reward you got. I happened to stumble upon at least one dungeon that wasn't part of the story, so it was probably either a sign of a lot of sidequests I hadn't gotten around to (I finished with only a C Adventurer's Rank), or just random stuff that was to be found if you wanted to look.
As the game progressed, standard battles became a little more strategic, actually requiring you to start using buffs/debuffs or other skills, which is always nice. For a large portion of it, the battles were pretty button mashy outside of healing. Even so, there were a lot of useless skills just to populate the list, it seemed, and I wish I hadn't wasted any points on a number of them early on.
Overall, if I hadn't had some fun with it, I wouldn't have played for 25 hours; usually I've made a determination by the 5 or 10 hour mark if I like it enough to play through, outside of ridiculous difficulty spikes, which thankfully this game did not have. The only complaint I have there is that some boss battles were won solely on luck - if they happened to spam you with their terrifying full-party attack a few turns in a row, you were toast. But on the bright side, dungeons were small enough or save points plentiful enough that you didn't generally need to worry about losing much progress - except for the unwinnable and unescapable high altitude airship battles, which were the only thing I hated.
Far more than I planned to type, but hopefully helpful!

$20 at Fry's already, hahaha. Hope it goes on Fry's clearance list soon so I can pick one up.

Yeha, I saw it there actually. That pretty much pissed me off as I preordered this from Amazon (and have yet to open it). I doubt it will be on the clearance list any time soon though - look at Rhapsody, for example. It's been cheap ($14.99) at Fry's for a long time but has yet to go on clearance.
On the plus side, though, what do I get in the mail today (Nov. 17th) but a packet from Ignition Entertainment. Yep, it was the art book and soundtrack CD! I had pretty much given up on that considering I sent in that request like, what, 2 weeks ago? At the time all I got back was an automated "I'm out of town" email from the contact person there and then nothing when he supposedly got back. So that's a pleasant surprise at least.
Did you get one Botticus? I think you requested it late like me. If not, it may still be on the way since it was mailed from Glendale, CA.

Oh man! I didn't even know there was a soundtrack...
I think I did some digging but I bet all 200 of what they had after looking at their twitter page is gone :( I wouldn't have minded getting it after it came out since it popped into my gold box.

Yessir, I was happy to see it in my mailbox on Monday. I had pretty much given up on it after hearing they were out and not having gotten a response. It's a great little freebie.

I need to ask my mom if this came in the mail yet. I sent it to her address because the Post Office here is total shit and won't deliver packages to my apartment complex.
EDIT: Yeah, she got it.
