Why do we dream?
Two different schools of thought exist as to why we dream: the physiological school, and the psychological school.
Both, however, agree that we dream during the REM, or rapid eye movement, phase of sleep. During this phase of sleep, our closed eyes dart rapidly about, our brain activity peaks, and our muscles suffer temporary paralysis.
The physiological theory centers upon how our body, specifically our brains, function during the REM phase of sleep. Proponents of this theory believe that we dream to exercise the synapses, or pathways, between brain cells, and that dreaming takes over where the active and awake brain leaves off. When awake, our brains constantly transmit and receive messages, which course through our billions of brain cells to their appropriate destinations, and keep our bodies in perpetual motion. Dreams replace this function.
Two underpinning physiological facts go towards supporting this theory of dreams. The first lies in the fact that the first two or so years of ones life, the most formative ones for learning, are also the ones in which the most REM sleep occurs. It follows that during this time of the greatest REM sleep, we experience the greatest number of dreams. The second physiological fact that lends credence to this theory is that our brain waves during REM sleep, as recorded by machines measuring the brain's electrical activity, are almost identical in nature to the brain waves during the hours we spend awake. This is not the case during the other phases of sleep.
Psychological theorists of dreams focus upon our thoughts and emotions, and speculate that dreams deal with immediate concerns in our lives, such as unfinished business from the day, or concerns we are incapable of handling during the course of the day. Dreams can, in fact, teach us things about ourselves that we are unaware of.
Connections between dreams that the human psyche have been made by many people over thousands of years. The famous Greek philosopher, Aristotle wrote in his "Parva Naturalia," over 2,200 years ago, of a connection between dreams, waking experiences, and emotional needs.
Others have delved into more complicated explanations for dreams, such as the prophetic nature of dreams written of in the Bible, which was and is a belief held by many cultures. Sigmund Freud, one of the fathers of modern psychology, believed dreams to be symbolic of any number of things buried deep within our minds and our memories.
Until someone proves or disproves one of these theories, or poses an alternate one, we are left at square one. Our knowledge as to what causes us to dream is limited to the fact that we do dream, and that dreams occur during the REM phase of sleep. Sweet dreams!

was a member of classmates from i think 1998 to 2003 (until the raise the freaking rates, it used to be 30 bucks for 2 years now its something like 36 bucks a year) but back to point. Ya they are on their but i dont think one of three things are going on. ONe they never check their email, its a dead email account or they dont care about their classmates (though i cant blame them cause most of them can go to hell but that is another point.
well we did email them in 1998 for the 5 year thing then in 99 for the 6 year thing then in 2001 for the 8 year thing and 2003 for the 10 year reunion thingie and never once heard back from them. Also emailed them a few other times like happy bday and some other things (like the time 1 of the people we both knew died and never heard from them or even seen them at the funeral.
then again just might just be having these dreams since sort of miss the good old days of middle and high school, isnt it werid we grow up with these people up to 12 years and then Wham when you get out of high school you never EVER see them again.
My mother told me in my last year of high school that you should make the most of the time you have with the people you know since after you leave school you wont see most of them ever again. Shes been out of high school for around 35 years and she said over those 35 years shes been lucky to seen around 10 people she knew from high school....
what is freaky in a way there is another college here that i never ever went into. one night i had a dream that i was talking to 3 people i knew in the libary of that college, well a month or two later i had to drop a newspaper off for that school and i walked into the libary and the freaking thing look like the thing i had in my dream. I mean i never ever been there before how the hell did i know what it looked like in my dream. I should email the 3 people that was in my dream and see if the went to school there but that would be too freaky if they said yea...
in closing i think i do dream about those days cause those were the fun days i mean nothing to really do but mess around in middle and high school and sadly those days are gone forever. now got to worry around paying bills and trying to keep a job
well any other comments
thanks

Well my thoughts are :D
When you dream you are in the deepest stage of your sleep cycle and that is when your body slows down the most and you technically are the closest to death that you can be while still alive. Therefore when you dream these are things that are happening you (your soul/spirit) are actually doing, sort of like an out of body experience, that is why you see people that you have never seen, have not seen in a long time or people that are dead already. This is just a taste of the after life. Also that is why you have multiple dreams in a night because your sould can travel anywhere in an instant.
That is just my crazy toughts, feel free to comment before they put me in the looney bin.

You never see those people again because they are not truly your friends. They are merely people you talk to throughout the day to get by with as much fun as possible. For the most part once school let out for the day you cared less about them because then you were around your real freinds.

Nah sadly im one of these idoits who decided to stay here. most of the people i knew in school moved either to new york, La, Texas or someplace else. When we did have the 10 year reunion thing the 20 or so people i knew there all lived outside of fort wayne.
For all you youngsters out there getting ready to get out of high school. RUN do not stay in the city that your at now if you hope to leave the city when you get older. time will pass and you will have fewer and fewer chances to leave. Get out while you still can lol
10 years ago i said well i stay here for a year or two then move to either cleveland or chiacgo. that time passed and i said a few years more then a few years more. well its been 10 years and now im stuck AHHHHHH
sort of getting off topic though : )
and a point on the other post by Othergods. I heard that alot that you are really leaving your body when you dream. That people who die in their sleep just wondered a little too far and couldnt find their way back to their body Something to think about

It's funny you ask that because PBS had a special about Sigmund Freud and CS Lewis.
Freud would probably divine that you're currently in a period of sexual inadequacy. That you haven't had relations with women in quite some time and that those pressures are being injected into your dream state. The broken car represents an opportunity that you missed to have intimate relations with this woman you had known for years, but no longer frequent. Also, it's a recognition that you had the opportunity to be physically intimate, yet choose not to cross that line. Which you're possibly regretting now that you're in a period of sexual frustration.
He'd say that, or that you want to fuck your mother.

Yeah, you probably have only 1 or 2 real freinds, the rest are just aquaintances.
And on a sidenote, Freud was a quack. Most of his theories have been disproven, ESPECIALLY those pertaining to dreams.

I think his arguments that as children we form a moral mythology that can be represented in dreams is quite interesting and informitive.

I had a dream one time that I had a chance encounter with an old "friend" who happened to be female. I hadn't seen her in maybe 3 years at the time of the dream. Well, short story shorter, I wanted to talk for a bit and catch up and she just said "I've gotta go" or something to that effect and drove off... didn't care at all. It was just a dream but it made me start thinking about whether or not I've ever made a real impact on anyone's life.
