No point in doing a Crystal remake since they incorporated most of those enhancements from the original game/storyline into HG/SS.

The more I think about this, the more I simply can't wait to get my hands on either of these. Looking at the pre E4 pokedex, it seems like it's the best yet as far as good/cool pokemon you can get. That's one of the things I haven't enjoyed with the newer pokemon, that being most of the cool pokemon aren't available until after the elite 4 is beaten.

The worst selection of pre-E4 pokemon was definitely in DP. The only fire type were Chimchar and Ponyta and Ponyta sucks.

Haha indeed, though Platinum seems to have recognized how crappy it was and made an effort to not suck as much.

I actually enjoyed gettign a Ponyta at a fairly early point, as I'd never really used one before. They aren't great, true, but it was nice to not have the same old, same old.

I hope so.

To my knowledge, no. The only thing the GBA games do is allow you to import guys into Pal Park like the previous games.

So did you guys see that the Power items will be used to pass on IVs to egg pokemon? Like if you attach a Power Bracer to a 31 Attack IV Charizard Male and a Power Lens to a 31 Special Attack IV Charizard female and then mate them, the baby charmander would have 31 IVs in both Attack and Special Attack, along with any egg moves it could learn.

Do you mean EVs or IVs? IVs are what the pokemon are born with and are from 0-31, and dont' change at all. EVs are what you gain when battling pokemon. The new way the power items work just make it so you can transfer the IVs into a baby pokemon so you don't have to spend all that time breeding a crapload and then using whatever means you like to find out what the IVs are.

That is in addition to how they already work in aiding you in EV training.

Mudkip is in the game.

After you've beaten the revised Elite 4 and Trainer Red, you go and talk to Steven Stone (a character from Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald), he'll note your accomplishments and let you have your choice of a Mudkip, Torchic or Treecko.

Just an FYI, one of the Regional VPs of gamestop down here said on Mondays conference call with the store managers that they may have to limit pre-orders. I'm not sure if they heard from Nintendo that there are only X numbers available at launch because of the pokewalker or what.

How true this is, I don't know. He may have said this to encourage his region to really push pokemon pre-orders and use "it's going to sell out" as a marketing ploy. Or he may have been telling the truth. I couldn't say either way. But if you're interested in pre-ordering from gamestop Gold, Silver or both and want them on release date, you may want to get your pre-order in soon... because they may max out their allotted copies.

I already preordered mine from GS, mainly because I get E-rewards gift cards and this is what I am spending it on this time around. Also because I tend to forget to pre-order so doing it when I remember to do it is the best idea for me. I ordered Platinum from Amazon last time and it took like a week to come plus I didn't get the figure. I don't care about the figure as its just going to collect dust here but originally they stated Amazon would have the figures and they never did.

I wonder if these remakes will sell more than Platinum, it seems people want the remade games more than the new ones.

Walmart is the best place to buy these games if you have no bias or giftcards and your spending your own cash to get them, they usually have the best gift pack and the same retail price as any store. However they don't take preorders so it may be hard to get a copy if they are going fast.

I pre-ordered both copies at two different places, so I should be getting both either on or before launch day.

Lately, I've been playing my copy of Soul Silver quite a lot as it's become my main version of Pokemon now. I do all my competitive breeding on there since the new mechanics help out a lot, and the new moves for Pokemon are nice. I've also caught all but 1 available legendary (Groudon) which I'll be catching this week. Other than that, I've been running through the Battle Towers which seem to be the exact same as Platinum (I haven't encountered any differences).

I've also very excited to obtain an english Pokewalker as I've been using my Japanese one since release, though I'll only most likely use 1 of my 2 english Pokewalkers.

From my hands-on session at Nintendo's California office:

http://www.examiner.com/x-13269-Gaming-Lifestyle-Examiner~y2010m1d26-Hands-on-with-Pokemon-HeartGold--SoulSilver-and-the-Pokewalker

Here's the text, though if you want to support my habit, please click the link above

Examiner took up Nintendo on an invite to their Redwood City, California office to check out the soon-to-be-released Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver. As enhanced remakes of the highly successful Gold and Silver titles from 10 years ago, these updates not only introduces a vast roster of characters that will be new to younger fans, but also takes advantage of the DS touch screen to make menu navigation less cumbersome and time consuming.

HeartGold and SoulSilver takes the fans back to the Johto region, specifically Ecruteak City. Inspired by the real life scenic surroundings of Kyoto, Japan, Ecruteak features tons of colorful foliage and many ancient temples, not to mention beaches and mountain regions.

Aside from the expected graphical enhancements, these titles feature the long-overdue ability to have any Pokemon party member follow the user during the exploration portion of the game. The player simply puts the desired Pokemon in the #1 slot in the party, and it will tag along next to the main character. The gamer can also turn around to talk to the Pokemon and they will even pick up items as the hero moves.

The improved menus offer detailed Pokedex info on the player's current roster of Pokemon including height, weight, type as well as its battle cry. The UI also allows for convenient dragging and dropping when it comes to collecting and trading.

In terms of actually catching Pokemon, there's an added challenge in that the games work off the DS clock and certain Pokemon will only appear at certain times of the day. Time-based triggers also extend to some non-player character interactions as well as store hours of some merchants.

So as not to alienate many DS users, HeartGold and SoulSilver do not take advantage of the unique capabilities of the DSi (though these games are obviously playable on that handheld). Yet one new and exciting feature that Nintendo is bringing to the series is the much publicized Pokewalker.

Not to be confused as a Tamagotchi-like add-on, the Pokewalker is an impressively deep gadget where Pokemon gain levels when the player is out walking. This can be used once the gamer catches their first Pokemon in the DS game (about 30 minutes into the story), after which the user transfers the Pokemon into the Pokewalker. While in the device, the Pokemon can pick through batches of grass for items as well as find wild Pokemon to battle against and hopefully catch. Players can have up to three wild Pokemon at any given time, but they're not stuck with them. If a user finds a new Pokemon they'd like to keep instead, they can switch out any of the present ones. There aren't any Pokemon exclusive to the Pokewalker, but they tend of have different stats than the ones in the DS game. Fellow fans can also connect their Pokewalkers, where their Pokemon can meet and exchange gifts, which are usually potions and berries.

Sending Pokemon back to the DS is remarkably easy, which merely involves pointing the Pokewalker at the DS and pressing a button. Another benefit to walking is the ability to build up watts, which are used in the mini games. When connecting to a DS, watts unlock new routes. Routes are used to determine what kind of Pokemon players run into. For those who like to keep track of records, all Pokewalker progress and stats are kept in a diary within the DS game.

Nintendo Assistant Manager of Product Marketing Seth McMahill acted as our guide during this visit. As a 10+ year specialist on Pokemon, Seth had much to say about HeartGold and SoulSilver. Stay tuned as we will be posting an interview with Seth later today.

Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver will be released on March 14, 2010 for the Nintendo DS and DSi. Each game will come with a Pokewalker.

Does anyone know if you can trade a Hoenn pokemon to SoulSilver as soon as you can start trading? I'd like to use Blaziken as my fire pokemon for my team throughout the game.

I had to turn off the battle animations because the battles in platinum just seemed to drag on forever...

I think when they added wi-fi they intentionally slowed battles down so you couldn't tell how much of a lag delay there was over wi-fi. That's my theory anyway.

Whatever, I pre-ordered SoulSilver (I hope that's the right call) and I plan on getting 3 Pichu's.

There's no right or wrong. It's which version has pokemon you want. Other than version exclusives, the only difference is do you want Lugia or Ho-Oh at level 40? The other you get at level 70.

So with this event those with just GH or SS get Jirachu and the unlocked path, not just the path right? Does that mean if you get it on D/P/P and trade it to HG, or SS it still unlocks the path?

EDIT: spelling, and demanding this games comes out now so the urge to buy Plat goes away.

So, I headed back to my Mom's house last weekend, to try and dig out my copy of Pokemon Diamond. My old room is bascially wall-to-wall-to-ceiling gaming stuff, so it took FOREVER to find the Pokemon Diamond box. Finally did find it, cracked it opened...and Super Princess Peach was inside! :bomb: More searching, and I finally found that box...only to open it and find Mark Kart DS! ARGH!

Hunted for another hour, and just could not find the damn Mario Kart DS box. I wasted a trip over there...

I don't think I'll be able to grab the Pichu, which is quite disappointing.

Oh! And the kicker. My nephew broke his DS long ago, and gave me a copy of Pokemon Pearl. I happened to find that while I was home...and it DOESN'T WORK! Tried cleaning the damn thing, but nothing. I think their dog chewed it up, as it has teeth marks all over it. Fuck.

I need to be sure before I pre-order tomorrow, you can get both Ho-Ho and Lugia in both HeartGold and/or SoulSilver? So if I buy HeartGold I can get Lugia and Ho-Ho?

Also, which version would be the best? I am stuck between the two. One has a better figurine, but I bought Gold when I was a child.

In HG, you catch Ho-Oh first at level 40. You can catch Lugia later at level 70. In SS, it's the reverse.

Neither one is better than the other. It just comes down to which one has the exclusive Pokemon you want.

The Jirachi event ends a day before release of HG and SS. The only way to get Jirachi over to those games is to trade it from D/P/Pl.

So there is no way to directly get GBA pokemon in SS/HG like you can in D/P? I still have a couple of Jirachi in my Sapphire and Ruby games.

So this will be like playing a whole new pokemon game anyways, since really didn't get to do the whole game. I always have fire starters so going with Cyndaquil, and like someone else here, my favorite pokemon is the fire-type Arcanine :D

Going to get my copy soon. I'm not sure who I'll choose, I like them all the same.

I went to a store that usually sells games early, and everything at ripoff prices, just to look at stuff. Two chuckleheads gladly paid $45 when it's less than $44 after tax, stating that getting it early is better than later.

Some toys r us are opening at 10am (might be normal time)

if you buy the game you get a 5 buck gift card + t shirt + some other junk but cant find the link anymore

the remakes or want to score some deals and goods, Toys R Us is the place to be.

From 10am to 1pm, participating store locations will have a Nintendo representative available with a copy of one of the two games for guests to demo. Free paper visors with Pikachu-themed colors, stickers, and coloring pages will also be given away.

However, the real meat of Demo Day is given out to the first 50 people who purchase the game: not only will they score a shirt (youth sizes only), but also a free Pokémon Basics Kit (normally retails for $10) that includes two gold and silver-colored cases that hold four game carts each, a cleaning cloth emblazoned with Ho-oh and Lugia, and two stylii with hanging charms. Lastly, a special $5 gift card imprinted with Ho-oh and Lugia will also be provided for you early birds.

Other deals include buying a Nintendo DSi unit, Heart Gold or Soul Silver, and a Pokémon Essentials Kit result in getting a free $20 gift card sans fancy legendaries printed on it. And those who just buy either game and a strategy guide get 20% off the guide. Lots of opportunities are going to be available here so if you're interested, hit up the source link to see a list of participating stores and be ready to wake up early.

so your getting
FREE T SHIRT Youth size only : (
Pokemon basics kit (what has 2 cart holders, cleaning cloth and 2 styiis )
and a 5 buck gift card

Got to try to be one of the first 50 though ... so for 35 bucks i would pay 5 for the 2 pens.. so that is like getting the game for 30 with free t shirt and 2 cart holders )

nice... just got to try to be one of the first people there though hopefully there isnt a mad rush

I wonder what stores are participating in that event. I didn't get an email notification for Nintendo World Store. I might have either missed it or it could be changed due to the weather. I know next week Nintendo World Store have an event involving Gold and Silver. The event most likely will occur in Time Square like any other Nintendo events. People here are crazy for free stuff. I doubt I will bother waking up early for that.

I'm picking up my copy tomorrow. As always, I'm starting out with the fire-type. I like the challenge.

I always start my main Pokemon as fire -type and I never experienced any difficulties in Pokemon series. They usually have high offensive stats. Pokemon is pretty easy rpg. I will only use my starting Pokemon throughout the game; which can easily accumulate over level 90 by the end of game. I generally overpower my opponents . When the end game comes I hunt down the legendary birds to booster your party against the elite four or buy a lot of pp restore items and your set. I been using the same strategy for all the Pokemon games and it never fails. If I applied that strategy towards a Shin Megami Tensei game, I will get slaughter for having a weak skill set and base stats.

I think the hardest starting Pokemon was yellow. Pikachu have a very low defense stats. Plus, you need to level grind Pikachu or grass Pokemon to get pass first gym leader, Brock.

Well you can capture a Mankey which is a fighting type, or use a Butterfree. In yellow you end up getting the original 3 anyway so it is still pretty easy.

hmm, can you use your D/P/PL games to transfer pokemon into your HG/SS game or do you need a National dex kinda thing? Maybe you have to do something in Goldenrod since that's where you used to transfer R/B/Y Pokemon into Gold/Silver.

Got my copy from my favorite video game store, obviously a mom and pop, yesterday. I chose a Chikorita because I spent the least amount of time with it.
I'd have to say after reading the instruction manual for the Pokewalker, I'm very impressed with this game already. The cart has an infrared sensor that hooks up with the pedometer, rather than using the wifi signal of the DS. I haven't turned it on yet, considering I really walk alot on an average day, and I'm afraid of over-training my pokemon.
I loves me some auto running, it's very helpful especially if one's playing with a stylus, and especially the DSi, considering the clicky sound of the buttons.

Each game a different starter is the easy/medium/hard.

RBY it's Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander.
GSC Cyndaquil, Totodile, Chikorita
RSE Mudkip, Treecko, Torchic

I think all were basically the same in DPP

#001 Bulbasaur, #004 Charmander & #007 Squirtle - "Kanto Starters"

The second batch of Starters you will find are the Pokémon whom trainers start with when they begin the journey in Kanto. In Heart Gold & Soul Silver, these Pokémon are obtained by visiting Professor Oak after you have obtained all 16 Badges and defeating Red. He will compliment you on your success and provide you one of these Pokémon. As with all starters, they will be at Level 5.

You cannot over train your pokemon by walking. Pretty much you can only gain one level per walk. Each step is 1 experience point. If you reach the experience points needed to level up then he reaches the max. You can continue to walk but it will not go towards experience points. So no worries about that, if you want to let it get its level then transfer it back to your game, he will level up and you can send him back to earn more experience points.

Does the PokeWalker work for hatching eggs too?

D4rkewolfe
03-14-2010, 09:42 PM
I don't think you can transfer eggs to the pokewalker, think only works for pokemon. I mean I'm nowhere near the location where you can start breeding them (I'm just assuming, since not even at the first gym...I never played gold/silver so not even sure where it is) to try it out.

Still, something tells me that more than likely you cannot.

sippycupz
03-14-2010, 09:47 PM
Yeah, I don't recall egg hatching being mentioned as a feature of it, so I figure the same. Just seems like the PokeWalker hatching eggs would make even more sense than any of the stuff it actually does. Still cool though.

D4rkewolfe
03-14-2010, 09:49 PM
You know why I think more it wouldn't work, because then you would not be able to catch any of the other pokemon during your walk. Since your pokemon fights the wild pokemon, your egg couldn't fight.

Especially since they say if you have no pokemon, you would get a wild pokemon who would join you in your walk, more than likely so you can use it to fight to obtain the other pokemon there.

Some places like Viridian Forest, Cycling Road and the Safari Zone were removed from the game, Cinnibar Island is completely different and some other routes were changed. That's what I've heard...but Gold/Silver came out when I was in 8th grade I think...it was either then or Freshman year of high school, and sorry, there was no way I'd still be playing a Pokemon game.

I hear that. I bought Ruby one summer when I had nothing else to play. I remember I bought it in a mall and happened to see someone from school. He was the kinda guy who, if he saw you, would come over and start talking asking what you were doing. Fortunately, he didn't see me.

I actually had to lie to my roommate during my Sophomore year of college (I think that's when Pearl came out) because I re-bought a DS Lite...I didn't want him knowing I was playing Pokemon (a Sophomore playing Pokemon is social fucking suicide) So whenever I'd be playing it, I'd just play in my room, and if someone knocked on my door, I'd close the lid and tuck it away. Cept one day I wasn't paying attention as I was playing, and he knocked on my door, so I say yeah come in, he goes "What the hell are you doing?" realizing my error, I quickly lied and said I was playing Tetris and that it was my cousin's DS..

Too close for comfort...

Kinda annoying thing about the guides for this game:

There are two separate guides, each covering the two game regions.

Johto Guide:
http://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-HeartGold-SoulSilver-Official-Strategy/dp/0307468038/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268680108&sr=1-1

Kanto Guide:

It's kind of funny that the Kanto guide won't be released until mid-April. I guess it gives gamers time to just get to Kanto. Probably going to be very confusing for plenty of folks later just wanting to get the guide. They'll totally accidentally buy the Kanto guide, even when they're first starting the game.

Gamestops inventory is supposed to be fairly accurate but 2 things could be happening here: Daylight Savings Time, and an abnormal release date (more likely the latter).

Even if they were out this morning, the chance of them getting some in today (or tomorrow) is very high. I remember when Darksiders came out, it sold out in my town, and they had another shipment the next day-- even higher chance of that happening with Pokemon.
