I tried connecting the Ethernet cable from the cable internet box into the vonage router VT2542-VD but it doesn't work. I'm horrible with computer hardware.

Have you installed the router setup software and done all the instuctions that came with the router?
other than that you could try calling Vonage's support they can probably walk you through it

I better called that vonage company or that cable company. Good advice. I'm going to see what happens next.
