because hes a dog. i dont think any of the dogs in that series ever talks. even moreso technically garfield doesnt talk we read his mind.
Are you sure? He tends to point a lot like he's about to make an announcement, at least in the cartoon one.

Hell why does Goofy speak and Pluto speaketh not? My theory Pluto suffers from severe mental retardation. Now follow me if a human suffers from severe mental retardation someone takes care of them. In Disney world animal are human, Mickey takes care of Pluto, so Pluto has severe mental retardation. Goofy has brain damage. So I guess Odie also suffers from mental retardation.
But here is another one for you, Donald Duck walks around without a shirt all day but as soon as he gets out of the shower he wraps a towel around his waist? Heard this on an episode of Friend and I still got no answer to this one.

Well to answer the thread; Jon always paid more attention to Garfield (due to his inability to cope with the rules of society - thus resulted in more discipline from Jon (interaction)) and this brought about Neglected Child Syndrome on Odie - Odie COULD talk, but he was never taught thus resulting in his frontal lobe to not adequately developing, which essentially prevented Odie's physical ability to speak.
Garfield's love of lasagna could have stemmed from a sexual molestation occurrence between Jon that ended in Jon dumping Garfield into a trash can (that was neighbor to the local Italian restaurant... and that very day, the lasagna supply was not presented with adequate refrigeration - which resulted in the entire supply to be dumped onto Garfield). So sexual trauma + Italian food = Garfield Loves Lasagna.
I'm confused.

ok since all cartoons are up for debate the smurfs were gay......there i said it. and the snorks had dorks on their heads snorks= sea dorks. heman was gay too as were many of his allies and enemies. and yogi bear should have served jailtime for all he pic-a-nic baskets he stole. oh yeah fread was nailing betty behind barneys back.

Apparently, it's to symbolize cats are smarter than dogs. Yet, there's the chained up dog by a beware of dog sign who "talks", but is none too bright.
The bigger question is, can Jon understand Garfield? Sometimes he seesm to, other times, not. is this some Stewie Griffen thing?
Yoda and Grover have the same voice, and are therefore related in some weird Muppet breeding system. Same goes for Snuffleupagus and Chewbacca.

no hes responding to the look hes giving him. i always used to wonder wtf happened to the guy who originally owned odie. one day he moves in with his dog and then a little while later he leaves and never comes back..........makes you wonder what could have gone down.

I read in a Garfield anniversary book once that Lyman (Odie's owner) was intended to give Jon someone to talk to. That role was later given to Garfield. The last time he appeared was the 10th anniversary strip. It's 31 years now...
