I have it on 360 and it was an absurd deal for 800 points/$10. $5 is a no-brainer. Capcom could have easily priced this at $15 and people still would have bought it in droves—it's an excellent hard-as-balls platformer, and the challenge rooms alone will break your spirit (in a good way) if you're really into masochistic games.

I urge everyone to jump on it. Felt like a steal at its original $10 pricetag - so polished. Never played the original and it took me a second playthrough to really appreciate it. Play it on easy first and then go to normal (AI really changes and you need to master swinging before taking them on).

Achievements is the deal breaker for me. I bought it on the PS3 for the better d-pad and the promise of implementation of trophies at a later date.. Ben Judd, the producer, originally promised that trophies would be implemented in the game. Just today he finally provided some closure on that promise stating that they ran out of time and trophies would not be coming after all.

The PS3 version also has a save bug where it sometimes deletes your challenge room data... Just a heads up. Its graphics are slightly better than the XBLA version though. Still, I'd get the XBLA version for the Achievements and lack of killer save data bug.

As someone that bought the game months ago, I can vouch for how awesome Rearmed is. The game was an amazing value at $9.99. Even the co-op is solidly programmed!
I consider Rearmed the best XBLA has to offer, and, at this lower price, I think anyone that passes this up is aggressively dense.

Apparently the XBLA version experiences screen tearing, has slightly poorer graphics, and has longer load times (all these are according to people nitpicking the minor differences at GameFAQs). Oh, and the 360's D-pad is terrible. I'm going with the PS3 version.

I'm surprised reliability issues with the 360 haven't been brought up. Also remember it is much cheaper to upgrade a PS3 HD versus upgrading a 360 HD. Then you throw in the ability to game share, I believe this tilts things towards the PS3 in IMO.

You were really saying that the failure rate of the 360 would stop a person from buying the game for $5 next week? If a person wouldn't buy this game for that reason, he or she shouldn't have a 360 at all.
Also, this person would have to think about the ease of upgrading the hard drive when considering this purchase. Both systems have a way of transferring the data so I don't see why the hard drive should be considered at all.

The rest of the game isn't THAT hard, but you do have to learn the bionic arm pretty well. It is definitely a challenge.
The challenge mode levels are just retarded. They are indefensible. Pixel perfect timings with no real guide or prompt. You have to guess at them. It is ridiculous.

The last level is immensely demanding; everything else is fairly doable, if not tough, but the Albatross will make you a man. The section with the collapsing platforms was probably the most tense phase of platforming I've had in years, perhaps only ever topped by Tubular from Super Mario World.
It's a wonderfully done game, though, and if you like 2-D gameplay at all it's really a no-brainer.
And I've managed to beat all but the final challenge room. I don't think I'll ever beat the final challenge room. :(

I just want to say this is a great deal first.
As a CAG the first thing I think about is how much $$$ it costs to upgrade the HD. I encourage you to do a per gigabyte comparison between the 360 and PS3. Then draw your own conclusions.
I'm also saying that if you can buy a the game for either system (like I can) wouldn't which system is most dependable factor in? Remember you will lose access to the game if your system dies. Then all the sudden to gain access to the $5 game you may have to purchase a new system. It is just something I thought some might want to think about.
I will admit to bashing the 360 for reliability issues and MS for overpricing their hard drives. I believe that bashing is well deserved in both cases.
The best part is if MS provided a decently priced HD I would not only purchase the HD I would buy more downloadable games. However, right now they can't get their head out of their ass to realize the big money isn't selling overpriced accessories, but instead selling software/games. It is pretty ironic when you think about a company that orgins began in software.

I haven't bought a game or DLC from PSN in a while, but I seem to recall you couldn't add odd amounts. If the DLC costs $1.99, you have the option of charging your card $1.99, but you can't add $1.99.
And I could never get a Visa gift card to work on PSN. It always declined the transaction.

Anyway! When deciding what system to purchase this game on, you should consider what system you plan on getting the new Bionic Commando retail game for. BC: Rearmed unlocks some cool stuff in Bionic Commando, so you'll want your download to match the retail title.
Also for people who are concerned about the difficulty, Easy mode is actually quite easy.

They will for three years from the original purchase date. Maybe I'm wrong about considering the reliability of a system when purchasing games;).
Aren't you worried that Sony's going to send you a refurb when your laser craps out (after charging you $125)? I know that's why I baby my 60GB PS3.
Shame on me for getting drawn into a console-warrish discussion in a $5 game thread.
And I really hope you're not an NU student who's basing these grand arguments around $5. What's that in NU tuition, like 30 seconds of class time? ;)

I've been meaning to pick this up but never got around to it. Definitely picking it up now.
Same here! I'm so happy they're doing this! Actually, I was holding out thinking that they'd offer this game as a bonus for pre-ordering, but that didn't happen so I'm happy I held out for this.
Excellent, I've been playing the trial of BC:R and love it. Hopefully Amazon drops it down to $5 as well so I can use my promo credit from my 1600 card.

Am I the only person who didn't care for this game.
I don't really care much for BC: Rearmed either. I'm going to have to do a lot of soul searching, even at a $5 pricetag.
The difficulty of the game comes only from the clunky controls. I know it's a retro-tribute game, but still...
Hopefully the new Bionic Commando game won't be intentionally handicapped.

Is there any way to add a specific amount to my PSN wallet? I'm only given the options of $5, $10, and so on. I have a couple of bucks on a visa gift card I got a while back and just want to finish it up.
Well you can't add anything below $5.
Or a user-specified amount
But you can put things in your cart and "charge" however much you lack for the purchase...as long as its over 5 dollars.
Thats how I do RB Songs. Put 3 int h cart and it charges 6.something to my card instead of $5 then another $5 charge.

That's remote play for ya. You can tweak settings on the PSP to make the image quality worse if you want to speed it up a little bit, but I found that even on the worst/fastest settings, there's a lot of lag.

Sure it does. Instead of playing straight through a game and then setting it to the side, achievements can give you an incentive to do all the side quests or play a game through again in a different way.
Also, achievements can help highlight subtle gameplay ideas that players might normally miss.

I hope this gets a RIDICULOUS amount of sales when the price drops. It would send a very good message to the publishers! I'm sick of random-ass games getting the premium $15 treatment for no good reason. Why the hell should Capcom's own "Flock" sell for 50% more than BC:Rearmed???

I'm sick of random-ass games getting the premium $15 treatment for no good reason. Why the hell should Capcom's own "Flock" sell for 50% more than BC:Rearmed??? Because Capcom didn't run a user poll on how much Flock should sell for like they did with BC:R. The users voted $10, and Capcom nervously went forward on that price point.
People who bought BC:R for $10 (myself included), shouldn't feel bad that the game's cheaper now. This could have easily been a $15 game and still have been worth every single penny.

These hard comments are disturbing. Did they do a terrible job on the remake? :hot:
PS3 load times on this game are half as long as the 360 version. This outweighs achievements I think.
That and the graphics are probably because the 360 one doesn't have as much data to work with? Well, at any rate with the PS3 one being half the price of the 360 one that finally takes care of that question for me :D

The only thing the PS3 version has over the 360 one graphically is that the 360 version's background shadows are slightly messed up. It's just some kind of little error that slipped through. If nobody told you, then you'd probably never notice. So it's not like the PS3 version has extra effects or more polygons or anything dramatic like that.

The graphics quality between the two seems roughly identical (except for the aforementioned glitchy background shadows it seems). Originally Capcom was saying that due to the 150MB limit on Live arcade games, the Xbox 360 version of BC Rearmed would have lower quality textures (along with SF2HD not including the remixed music), however within a few weeks it was announced that Microsoft made an "exception" for those two games and would allow them to go above the normal limit, so their content is the same as the PS3 version.
I'm on the fence though...I usually prefer 360 versions of these games for a few reasons, but remoteplay definitely sounds tempting...

Glad I ended up getting this deal on PS3. I guess there's still a chance Amazon will match the 4.99 price point so that you can buy it for exactly 4.99 for XBLA, but as it stands right now, I'm completely against the Microsoft points system because you can't just buy 4.99 worth of points (yes, I'm THAT cheap). I originally kind of wanted achievements too, but I looked them up and I'll have to agree with a previous poster...the achievements kind of suck. I'm looking to put some time into this game...just not THAT much time. I find that the dualshock d-pad comes in particularly handy in the sometimes demanding controls of this game as well.
I'm really liking the game so far though. You really have to use some quick reflexes and strategy to think about how you're going to tackle the platforming, and each enemy kind of has their own abilities or weak points. It's challenging, but definitely not impossible, and when you beat stuff, it feels rewarding in its own right. For anyone on the fence - BUY IT! - it's an excellent value for either system. There's tons of unlockables, secrets, and challenges to keep you busy.

The achievements in the game DO suck though (as Capcom is the worst company in existance when it comes to achievements), the amount of time you're investing for a lousy 200 points is insane. They really need a new achievement tier for XBLA games...

I should have know this with be an Xbox Live Gouged member deal. MS never cut the frugal a break. This is one of those times I am disappointed I don't have a PS3, since online is free, which means I don't have to pay extra for everything that comes with a game or "unlock" something I've already payed for, let alone having to pay a fee to get a discount (makes so much sense).

Oh FFS, I don't even care about that, I'm asking about the Costco remark now. Could you pack your ego away and help me find a way to skim a few bucks off of a gold membership, or is that asking too much? Very different. Those are stores where it's known you have to be a member to buy stuff there (for the most part), and also the point of being a member is to buy stuff. Xbox Live Gold is an multiplayer game service (1), and many deals for Live Arcade do not require the multiplayer Gold service (2)

I'd agree that games are not as fun as they used to be and I don't think it's just because we're old or played too many. I still find some games as fun or more fun than those in the past, but that is very rare and most can't compare to past games. Developers are too concerned with pulling off technical aspects than gaming psychology.
Wolfpup

I completely disagree. I mean you might not like games as well now, might not like the genres or whatever, but if anything games tend to be better made now, more streamlined to remove annoying parts (though we have a LONG way to go with that).
I miss 2D platformers and 2D in general. I'd love to see some real work done on that on the current gen systems. I'd also like some easier to play Japanese RPGs...but less fun? That's really you guys preferences, not games in general. I've been playing stuff since before the NES, and think stuff's just as fun as ever. Heck, some stuff like Mass Effect is something I dreamed of for decades.
Also I 100% disagree about an increased focus on technical stuff. If anything I think there's less of a focus on that than in the past, but certainly it hasn't DECREASED. I don't know where that idea could come from, and I've seen it expressed before. Hardware introductions have slowed, fancing coding is out with middleware in, etc., etc., etc. Technical aspects, if anything, seemed a bigger focus 20 years ago.

That's fine, it's your opinion. Though streamlined means nothing to me when the actual gameplay hasn't evolved enough or has actually degenerated. Almost every genre has seen its best games released past generations ago. No increased focus on technical stuff? Developers put more care into lighting, textures, reflections, water, etc today instead of the actual stuff that makes a game fun to play.
Hardware has slowed because it's more expensive now and more power allows for more degrees of utilizing it. Middleware is done merely for cost saving and hasn't stopped developers from trying to up everyone else utilizing the same engine.

Hasn't evolved? Degenerated? When? What?
Almost every genre has seen its best games released past generations ago.
There are some select genres (like what I mentioned) that have unfortunately fallen out of favor, but beyond that I don't know what you could be talking about.
No increased focus on technical stuff? Developers put more care into lighting, textures, reflections, water, etc today instead of the actual stuff that makes a game fun to play.
According to you? What evidence do you have for that, or that developers care less about the experience than they used to? What evidence do you have that there's an increased focus on the technical side?
I've heard this before...did you follow IDEs in the 80's? The 90's? If so, how can you claim that? There was always talk about new programming techniques, new hardware, etc. I really think that's DECREASED now, not increased, but it certainly hasn't gotten more of a focus.
My assumption with people making claims like this is either:
They like some genres that have gone out of favor far more than current genres, and so think things have gotten worse
They didn't play things in the past, and don't actually know how things have changed (or not)
They like (or think they like) things from a particular point better, because it took place during a particular point in their life (just as you hear people claiming films or music have gotten worse...almost always since the supposed "golden age" of their adolescence
Middleware is done merely for cost saving and hasn't stopped developers from trying to up everyone else utilizing the same engine.
And how is trying to do that new? If they really, really just cared about the tech, they'd all be rewriting their own engines, etc. for that matter, not reusing stuff so they can focus on the rest of the experience.
I'm sure there are more, but off hand, the only creator I can think of that always has seemed to focus on technology over the actual experience-Factor 5-just went under. Only they've ALWAYS been like that, or at least since the mid 90's. (Honestly I've never played Turrican, so I don't know if it was similar.)

I don't think there's any point in arguing with Wolfpup... :P
But I agree that when people say that games aren't as good as they used to be, it's one of these things:
-They're tying their memories of older gamers with a happier/nostalgic time in their lives.
-Games have evolved but the gamer has not. He doesn't want a good story, or he doesn't enjoy the myriad other advances that games have made, especially multiplayer games.
-The gamer only likes certain genres which are underrepresented these days. However the same gamer is probably oblivious to the many indie and downloadable games that fit in those genres.

I agree completely. It happens with all forms of entertainment. People think there aren't any good movies anymore and music sucks these days. In 20 years people will say the same thing and point back to now, because in 20 years people will have forgotten White Chicks and the first 50 Cent game. They'll remember Bioshock and The Dark Knight and say, "Why don't they make them like that anymore?"

It's called nostalgia. Nothing ever lives up to what you played as a kid because you were less discerning than you are now. I used to think all the older NES games I played were great and nothing current could ever top them, but then I play little gems like Shadow of the Colossus :)
Hasn't evolved? Degenerated? When? What?
Look at current JRPG's for instance. Better & more complex stories have existed in the past as well as better battle systems and gameplay. Or survival horror. It used to have a great immersion and actually created a tense and scary atmosphere. Now they've become games with cheap thrills and mindless action. Racing games have become incredibly stagnant with barely any new ideas, retreading the same things over and over, concentrating on the amount of cars or particle effects instead. These are but a few examples.
There are some select genres (like what I mentioned) that have unfortunately fallen out of favor, but beyond that I don't know what you could be talking about.
The following games were better and more fun for their time than the majority of current releases, and thus were more fun relative to how fun games are today. In direct comparison a new game could be more fun, but these games were more fun for their time and thus were a better experience. Just because they are not anymore, doesn't take away how fun they were back then.
Sports: Tecmo Super Bowl, NFL Blitz, 1080 Snowboarding, SSX, Tony Hawk 1-3, NBA Jam, Punch Out, Super Punch Out, etc.
FPS: Doom, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Halo, Half Life 2, Quake series, etc
RPG: Chrono Trigger, FF6-10, Xenogears, Xenosaga, FFT, etc.
SHMUP: Anything last gen and older
Adventure: Zelda series pre GC
Racing: Daytona USA 1&2, Mario Kart series pre GC, F-Zero series, Wipeout series pre PSP, GT 1-3, etc
Survival Horror: RE 0-4, Silent Hill 1-3, Eternal Darkness, etc
Fighting: SFII, SF Alpha series, MK 2-3, Killer Instinct, VF 1-4, Tekken 1-3, etc
Platformer: Mario 1,2,3,World,64, etc
Puzzle: Tetris, Puzzle Fighter 2, Dr Mario, etc
Beat em up: Double Dragon, TMNT Arcade game & TiTime, Streets of Rage, etc
Side Shooter: Contra 1,3, Gunstar Heroes, Metal Slug series, etc
RTS: Starcraft, Warcraft 2-3, earlier Command & Conquer, Civilization series (although IV may be an exception).
Sandbox: GTA:VC, GTA:SA.
These to me were more fun for their time and better games for their time relative to how fun and good games are today for their time. The experiences I've had with these types of games were better than the experiences games of today have given me. And it's not merely age difference in myself because there are still games today that have been more fun for their time relative to these games in the past. And this is my opinion, just as you have yours.
According to you? What evidence do you have for that, or that developers care less about the experience than they used to? What evidence do you have that there's an increased focus on the technical side?
It's all you fucking hear about when they talk about their games. It's clear in the design of the games. It's what the average person wants (they buy games with the best graphics not the best gameplay, CAGs might not, but most of the public does). They cater to the lowest commond denominator. It's obvious when you look at what they've created. Gabe Newell was 100% correct when he said that whole thing about game creators are not taking into account the psychology of reward and reinforcement enough. What evidence do you have that it's not an increased focus...
I've heard this before...did you follow IDEs in the 80's? The 90's? If so, how can you claim that? There was always talk about new programming techniques, new hardware, etc. I really think that's DECREASED now, not increased, but it certainly hasn't gotten more of a focus.
IDEs? Do you mean ID software? Not following you. Of course there was talk of new hardware and such, that will always happen, but it has increased in the game industry of today in comparison to the past. Not by a huge amount, but enough that it has made its mark. Technology is becoming more and more part of our society and consciousness, and leading people to pay more attention to it. New game experiences require technological advances and it's become harder to create new experiences without trying to push the technological envelope in some form.
I like every genre that exists, back then and now, except modern fighting games. I've been playing games since Atari, and have never stopped since then. I realize there is an age factor, but I still feel that it is not simply that. I still like some modern games more than those in the past, but there are not many of these.
You used to find far MORE talk about technology, about how some piece of tech outdoes someone else's piece of tech in the past than you EVER do now.
Costs are so high now that developers are pretty much forced to use middleware. Even if they want to push the technological envelope, it doesn't mean they have the resources and time to be able to do what they want. I'll do the same thing to you... Devil's Advocate: If they cared more about the experience than the tech they would create an engine that fitted the type of game experience they wanted to create and not be limited by the middleware. You see... it's about costs and what concessions they need to make...
What about Epic, id, Crytek, SE FF series, High Voltage, Polyphony Digital, among others. Then there's those that try to go for both technical and creative/fun like Kojima (which is actually the best of both worlds). This is why he and those rare few like Blizzard and Valve stand out in this industry...
Disagree. Also now it's more of about touting your tech and what you're doing than comparing to others. There's less fighting against competitors in that aspect and more of a personal focus on what someone is doing themselves. This is probably to a large degree the result of developers trying to be more professional as the industry becomes larger and mainstream.

I agree age/time in life is aspect, but there's still games today that I think are better than those in the past. But there were more in the past that were better for their time. I've evolved, I don't like the same genres as much as I did when I was younger. I appreciate a good story, I love the stories that a few of the games out there they can provide.
