Any thoughts on this one? I liked their last album, but haven't heard this yet.

Best Buy has it for $9.99 as well if you want a hard copy.

The album's been streaming on Rhapsody since last Friday. It's still on there, mtx. I posted some thoughts at another board, so I'll copy and paste:

1. Song of the Century

Act I: Heroes and Cons

2. 21st Century Breakdown
3. Know Your Enemy
4. ¡Viva La Gloria!
5. Before The Lobotomy
6. Christians Inferno
7. Last Night On Earth

Act II: Charlatans and Saints

8. East Jesus Nowhere
9. Peacemaker
10. Last Of The American Girls
11. Murder City
12. ¿Viva La Gloria? (Little Girl)
13. Restless Heart Syndrome

Act III: Horseshoes and Handgrenades

14. Horseshoes And Handgrenades
15. The Static Age
16. 21 Guns
17. American Eulogy (Mass Hysteria/Modern World)
18. See The Light

Green Day's been my favorite band since 1993-1994 and got me wanting to create my own music. But while Dookie was their most popular album, Kerplunk! was actually my favorite up until American Idiot. Most of my favorite songs (on any given album) are the ones that were never released as singles.

I thought Idiot was their best work, and the new album, 21st Century Breakdown is more of the same. I can't say yet if it's better than the last album, but I've listened to it all the way through many times over the past week. The album began streaming on MTV.com, Rhapsody, and other sites last Friday, and I obtained a burned copy as well. I'll be buying the official release today.

It's hard to pick favorites since the album is best listened to as a whole and is more than the sum of its parts, but I'd have to say that the following are my top 5, in no particular order except for the title track being #1 (as opposed to American Idiot, where the title track was easily the worst:

"21st Century Breakdown"
"¡Viva La Gloria!"
"Before the Lobotomy"
"Relentless Heart Syndrome"
"The Static Age"

The lyrics to all songs can be found here: http://www.greenday.com/site/lyrics.php

The album is still streaming at Rhapsody as well: http://www.rhapsody.com/green-day/21st-century-breakdown

Hmmm...you're right. I did see it at Target on Tuesday so I assumed it was out then.

I loved American Idiot, but after giving this a quick pass over, I just can't pull the trigger. I know that's a fast judgment, but it sounds awfully produced to me.

I'm undecided on this so far. American Idiot is far and away their best CD (I've been a fan for a long time and own every album of theirs). This new one is in the same vein as American Idiot in that you need to listen to the entire CD at once to get the experience. My initial reaction is that the songs on American Idiot work better as, um... songs - even though that album is also best when listened to from start to finish. I've been listening to 21st Century Breakdown for about a week and it is growing on me every time - headphones make a HUGE difference on this one too. I don't know. It's really really good but probably not as good as American Idiot.

I generally believe every great band has one album in them that far surpasses anything they should be capable of creating. American Idiot was that album for Green Day. After the crap-fest that was Warning (there are a few gems on there) they had no right making that record but that's what makes them great.

Yeah, American Idiot had stronger stand alone songs, but this is a great package overall. There are no 9 minute epics like "Jesus of Suburbia", but there are no shitfests like the song "American idiot", either. I can't say if it's better or worse than AI after only 5 days of listening.

Posted this in the Zune thread, but you don't get the bonus track if you follow that link, or at least I didn't. This one seems to work, but I already bought it without getting the bonus track, so I think I'm out of luck. Try this link if you want the bonus track:

American Idiot was MUCH better than "Know Your Enemy"

Lyrically, yes. Musically, it was very generic and boring.

Thanks for the heads up! I bit on this one. $4.99 is a steal for this.
