E3 Update: Number of Accounts, but no PS3 release date yet.

From Kotaku.com (http://kotaku.com/5277829/free-realms-still-growing-insanely-quickly)

First they hit one million players within weeks of release. Then they hit 2 million a week and a half later. Where does the Free Realms population stand right now?

I stopped by the Sony Online Entertainment booth (to see if I could get a little mining in) and talked to Senior Producer Andrew Sites about the future of the game, which I will discuss a bit later. My main concern was their ever-growing horde of players. Where do they stand now? As of last night, the population has reached 2.5 million players, and they are still growing at a ridiculous rate. That's 500,000 new players in a week.

Could a free-to-play family-friendly massively multiplayer online game from SOE surpass World of Warcraft in users one day? At this rate it's looking like a definite possibility.

Free Realms (http://www.freerealms.com), Sony's free MMO with a collectible card game and kart racing was launched ~3 weeks ago. With its eminent release to the Playstation 3, I thought it'd be appropriate to start a thread.

According to Joystiq.com (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/15/free-realms-hits-a-million-players-in-18-days/#comments), 1 million accounts have been created since its launch. Not sure how much money has been made off of this so far, and how active those accounts still are after the initial interest but that's a promising start. The low-entry cost and difficult economy are probably helping to drive interest in the economically stressed time.

It's specifically designed for the very casual market, that some CAGers may find interesting and worthwhile.

How the Game Works:
- Leveling up to a certain point is free but anything after that requires payment.
- And there will be micro-transactions to further "augment" the experience.
- According to the first interview, 60% of the game is available to free players
- Those who pay a $5/month subscription fee will have access to additional areas, new jobs, weapons, and booster packs for the collectible card game.

I do wish we could find out more information on the game being on the PS3.

No release date has yet to be specified. My guess is that Sony is focused primarily on the PC version as the market is understandably larger; although I would have thought that it'd be wiser to do a test run of servers and stress on the PS3 since it has a smaller user base.

But then again, Sony's been doing MMOs since Everquest so I'm sure they already have loads of in-house experience. :)

I saw free, and now I'm curious :D

Maybe we should start a CAG clan, just to mess around when it does launch.

And is it me, or is that character on the right of the "Jobs" picture look like a flight stewardess? Wonder what kind of powers she'll have? "+3 patience when dealing with crappy from customers and -10 hit damage against falling luggage. +6 to alcoholism due to stress of job."

If I understood the interview video correctly, it's only a 50 MB install and the rest is downloaded temporarily as you enter each zone. Doing so eliminates the need for player-downloaded patches, as all game changes are done on the server side by the time you re-enter a recently patched zone.

Speaking from my experience w/ WoW, that would eliminate one of the bigger headaches of the experience. Still -- downloading a massive 400 MB patch with loads of new goodies was similar to Christmas in April (or whenever).

I played this on the PC during the last weeks of Beta Testing. Not too bad, coming from a WoW retiree. Most of the non-avatar flash based mini games are just that, flash based mini-games. Avatar-based games, such as pve Combat or Go-Kart racing were playable and enjoyable, and thankfully a much more bug-free experience compared to the flash games.

Been playing off-and-on for the past couple of weeks, and aside from the flash-game problems, there is nothing really to gripe about considering it's a free2play game.

@Richlough: Doing an initial scan, I'm not seeing an install directory for Free Realms, and not even for the Plug-in that installed itself to firefox. The game seems to be streaming the majority of the content to your computer as you travel, which somewhat gives reason to the questionably slow run speed. Also, you'll notice the non-stop downloading icon that pops-up in the corner whenever you walk around an the plug-in is loading content to your computer.

So, make sure you have a pretty beefy Broadband connection, and having a decent amount of ram and local cache shouldn't hurt either.

I was too, until I saw 'pay after a certain point' and 'microtransactions'.

That's the main reason, aside from it being turn-based, that I could never get into WOW or any MMO.

If I'm gonna pay $50 or so for each incarnation of your fuckin' software, give me my playtime on the servers gratis or get bent. That's like paying for DLC. I usually wait until something I want for a game ends up as a free DL for a bit(Mercenaries 2 'blow it up again' pack when it first released)before I'll even bother with trying to get it.

This way, if it sucks I don't have to worry about how much I wasted on it.

So, you'd rather not be able to try a large percentage of a game before committing money for it?

While I commend your desire to save money, are you seriously whining about the ability to play the game for free to try, then being able to buy in if you like it?

Are you aware that persistent games like this are not the same as your average FPS where you can have a little 16-32 player server running for a few dollars a month?

And with this game, it's not $50 for each incarnation, that's Madden. This, you just download the game and start playing it for free. There's no big giant cut off where you have to stop playing either. You just won't be able to progress past a certain point without paying, you can still keep playing and trying other things within the game and progress through those other aspects. And if you end up not liking it, don't pay.

I'm definitely looking forward to this. I haven't played any sort of MMO since I last retired from WoW 2 years ago. But it looks like its a long ways off, since there isn't even a launch date yet. Count me in the CAG clan on guild whenever it releases.

I played the beta and liked what I saw, but I don't want to touch it much till the PS3 version is out.
