View Full Version : Do you consider yourself a "gamer"?

Why or why not?

darthbudge

Yeah, because I play games.

But I am not one of those gamers, that people think of when they hear that word. (See: 90% of the GGT)

I don't really play games often, so I'd lean towards no. I'd definitely never attend any gaming convention or go to any gaming tournaments, either.

Yes. Cut my teeth on the Atari 2600 and never looked back. Was absolutely blown away by Nintendo when I was a young child and it became a cultural obsession. I had Nintendo bedsheets back then and swallowed my pride as an early 20-something and walked into a Hot Topic in order to buy a "1up" t-shirt.

Sadly, the responsibilities of life have reduced my gaming free time. I cannot spend entire nights playing like the teens and college kids of today, much like I used to do with a SNES or the N64/Playstation. Because I cannot dominate Halo, does that suddenly make me not a gamer? I still love the industry. I check multiple gaming sites a day for news, own more games than I can probably play, and love to read about all the cool history and developments.

If you answer yes to this, you should read "The Ultimate History of Video Games" by Steven L. Kent. Awesome book if you are truly interested in the industry.

The next question:
If you do call yourself a 'gamer', do you use that term to refer to yourself in places other than the company of other gamers? Say, at work or at the bar or in class.

Mr. Anderson
05-17-2009, 02:09 AM
Of course I'm a gamer.

For better or worse, I've been playing video games since I was old enough to remember. I have fond memories of moments and spans throughout my life of playing all kinds of games, and meeting and connecting with other people through video games.

The term "gamer" is very broad, but I would think that anyone who is a member of Cheap Ass Gamer would at least consider themselves one.

LOL, what? You compared the exact same word. This is the internet, there is no such thing as inflection or tone with text on a screen. God, I hate the internet for that fact alone.

The next question:
If you do call yourself a 'gamer', do you use that term to refer to yourself in places other than the company of other gamers? Say, at work or at the bar or in class.

Yes. If you are a gamer, why would you be hide that fact? I routinely use the work geek to describe myself. People use these terms in a derogatory manner or in a shameful way. What's wrong with videogames?

I play games, I search for deals on games, I work , I eat, I sleep and repeat.

I consider myself a gamer there's nothing wrong with liking things. Some people are afraid to admit they like games in order to seem cool and not nerdy. I guess drowning your face doing a keg stand is a REAL ACCOMPLISHMENT. I like games but also alot of other things as well.

05-17-2009, 09:56 AM
No. The term gamer has a ton of connotations to it, that really don't fit me. For example, a gamer would play a wide array of games, meanwhile I have pretty much been playing Halo 3, with a couple of blockbuster games thrown into the mix, for the last 2 years. Also, gamers are thought to play video games all day, while I only play halo occasionally, usually on fridays and saturdays. I guess the best way to describe me is a little more into video games than your average madden-loving casual gamer, and a lot less into video games than hardcore gamers. For example, I don't play the single player portions of games, unless its GTA or Bioshock. A real gamer would think of that as being blasphemous, but I couldn't care less if games came with singleplayer or not.

And then you have the idea that gamers are losers who have bad hygiene and are socially awkward. I don't fit into any of those categories. Like Moxio said, I'd never attend a gaming convention (unless E3 was somehow in NY and I got tickets for cheap) or a gaming tournament. With the same token, I never felt the need to go to a midnight launch for a game either.

Anyone who plays games on a regular basis is a gamer. However, we all know the connotation of that term in regards to those who are allergic to soap and girls. In the general sense, yes, I'm a gamer.

johnnypark
05-17-2009, 02:20 PM
The same as I'm a driver because I drive a car, or a reader since I read books. I think generally when you hear the term, though, it's to address a perceived demographic that thinks it has something in common. The people who start (or care enough to join) things like gamers rights orgs and the like. I love videogames but I really don't think of it in terms of a sense of identity.

Perhaps my disdain for the term just comes from the Gamestop ads that run in every fucking store, that always start out with something like, "Hey Gamers!" and then explains to you how 'the hottest, best titles are only available at GS!'

I am a gamer. I game quite a bit, and still maintain plenty of friendships and even a relationship. I'm not gloating here, but trying to defend the stigma that being a gamer is stuck with.

I know some people get stuck in situations where they kind of have to be quiet about their gaming. A lot of people instantly brand you as nerdy, which is lame.

Ok, that's just stupid. You'd go to the MAJOR gaming convention, but you are too cool otherwise. And that inane labeling is exactly why the term "gamer" has come into discussion in this thread. And that's why replies to this thread have now centered around the real lives of the people who consider themselves gamers. Nothing like insulting the group of people you are talking to on a site called cheapassgamer.

I would say no I am not a gamer. Married with kids. I have time to play games but choose to do other stuff most of the time (such as yell at the kids :)). If I start playing Civilization Revolution though I get vicious if a family member talks to me.

I say Im not a gamer because I get turned off very quickly by most games. Fallout 3, Fable II and Civilization Revolution are the only games I have put much time into since Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube. I will put time into a good baseball game if available. The Show 08 got worn out. 2k Baseball games not so much.

I think the term gamer is too broad. Everyone here is technically a gamer, some are just more hardcore about it than others.

I used to be in the hardcore group. I owned every major System, 400+ games, read 5 mags a month, scoured 5+ sites for VG news and I even wrote reviews for a up & coming site (unpaid). But that was before I had a major mental meltdown and a sort of identity crisis.

Nowadays I want to be a hardcore gamer again, but I just don't have the time. Between a time-consuming job, trying to finish school and a wonderful girlfriend I just don't have that much free time. Not only that, but I find my free time more often than not going into other endeavors, like listening to music, watching TV / Movies with friends or just browsing Internet Forums.

This thread makes my head hurt. It's like a book forum having a thread, "Are you a book reader??" and 20% of them going, "No, I don't really like books." Huh?

This thread makes my head hurt. It's like a book forum having a thread, "Are you a book reader??" and 20% of them going, "No, I don't really like books." Huh?

I think people are reading "gamer" as "hardcore gamer."

For your book example the equivalent would be asking "Are you a book worm?"

I play games maybe 2 or 3 times a month for 1-3 hours a session, so I don't label myself a gamer/hardcore gamer. I don't think I play enough to warrant the label, and if my 360 died I'm not sure I'd bother replacing it vs. just trashing it and selling the games. Like others I've just gotten busier the older I get, and when I do have free time it's going to the girlfriend, TV, movies, sports, social outings etc. vs. sitting on the couch and playing games.

But I have no negative opinion of games or gamers, just not the time for/interest in games to deserve to call myself a gamer. And I'd agree that the stereotypes and people implying they're too cool to be a gamer is pretty damn lame.

Similarly, I have a Kindle and post on a couple ebook forums, but I wouldn't call myself a bookworm since I just read for 30-60 minutes at night before sleeping a few nights a week and I'm lucky to get through more than 1-2 books a month. So I don't think I deserve the bookworm/avid reader label when others on those forums are reading several books a week.

As for why I'm here when I'm not much of a gamer these days, as I said above I found the site recently when searching for Blu Ray deals and coming across the DVD/BR deal forum, and have stuck around a bit for that and the Off Topic forum and occasionally check the game forums to see if there's anything that catches my eye coming out.

You might want to take the temperature down on those sizzling ass burgers, DarkNessBear.

I posed the question to see what others consider a "gamer".

Me - I play games... lots of 'em. But I don't consider myself a gamer. It's just something I do - not what I do.

Some people have different viewpoints on what it is to be a gamer - deal with it.

Some reason people are linking Gamer with wizard or ultra nerd. Its just a simple classification of someone who plays games. Do you own a console or PC and do you play games on it... seems simple enough. Its not a bad thing, no one is going to beat you up and steal your lunch money guys...

Halo05

My issue with it is that it didn't used to exist. Way back in the day, when you met a new kid at school or something, you'd ask "do you play videogames?" and conversation about NES games would ensue.

The term 'gamer' sounds artificial. Like Gamestop came up with it to connect with the kids or some shit. It's the 'poochy' of the videogame world.

I'll never deny the fact that I collect and play videogames and I'm not worried about being beaten up for it. However, at 29 years of age, I'm certainly not a fucking "gamer".

Yeah, at 30, I'm with you there Halo05.

I'm not ashamed of playing games, had a blast playing Left 4 Dead for a couple hours with my friend last night.

But I don't see a need to call myself a gamer, both because it's silly and if the label had some meaning (good or bad) I probably don't deserve when I'm lucky to game 5-10 hours a month.

Yeah this thread got really sad. Why so many people on a game forum that dont play games?

I don't think there are any here who don't play games at all. There are just different levels of interest in games. Many/most have games as there main hobby. Others play games, but not a whole lot and have other hobbies they spend more time on.

Games used to be a bigger interest for me, but as I've gotten older I've both had my time for hobbies shrink and gotten less into games and more into social things, movies, books, music etc. But I still enjoy games and try to find at least one evening every week or two to play.

But again, I wouldn't call myself a gamer. Nothing to do with the stupid gamer=nerd stereotype. I just don't think I deserve any such label when I play so little compared to most people on sites like these. They are the true gamers, I'm just a guy who casually likes to play a game every now and then.

When does someone become a "football fan" instead of a "guy who watches football" (or baseball, etc.)
Movie fan? Fan of the Simpsons or another show? Or perhaps more closely related, when does someone move from "playing golf" to "being a golfer"?
I am a Gamer. I'm 36 and happily married with a son. I also love to read ("reader"), I love certain TV shows ("Simpsons fan") and movies, I love board games ("board gamer"), I love doing things with my family ("family man"). Some weeks I play for twenty hours, some weeks I'm lucky if I get 2 or 3 hours.
But just like gamer != nerd/loser/whatever, nongamer !=newbie/dilettante/etc.

All that said, my interest in gaming does wax and wane...the last game I really got into and had a burning desire to play was Fallout 3, right now i'm sort of floating..."Eh, what do I want to play today...nothing's jumping out...."

I don't consider myself a "hardcore" gamer, for a couple reasons. Most "hardcore" gamers I know try to complete everything in a game, or are extreme fans of one or two games or consoles, or can't/don't acknowledge that the things they don't like can be good, or try to build up this "we were here first/we're better than you" elitism, and I'm not into any of those. Those are my perceptions of 'hardcore gamers'.

I've never been to a convention or a gaming contest or a midnight launch, although I have gotten games on release day.

Everything/everyone has to be a "label" these days, or you don't exist...

Everything has to be a label anymore you don't exist...
Read that aloud to yourself.

Read that aloud to yourself.
You mean, out loud?

That's what happens when you juggle posting and playing a game I guess.

Even if you play less than one hour of games a week? Remember, this is "gamer", not just gamer.i haven't played a game in 3 weeks, I haven't watched a trailer or game video in 5. haven't read an article related to gaming in 2 weeks. heck I haven't been online in 6 days (till today) and I still consider myself a gamer. Sure most of my gaming is a generation behind because it's cheaper and I'm not the most hardcore but I'm still a gamer. I'm not a bejewelled/mindsweeper/solitaire person either. I'm a gamer. If you think you need to play 2 hours a week minimum to be a gamer you're too hardcore.
