I wasn't all that interested in this game until I watched the demo video on the Nintendo Channel. I didn't realize this was going to have disc golf, of course taking full advantage of MotionPlus. Disc golf with MotionPlus interests me a lot more then regular golf with MP. It looks pretty damn fun. According to the IGN preview linked to below, you can play disc golf on all the courses included in the game. I'm wondering if it allows controller sharing like in WiiSports so we don't have to have 4 MP's in order to play it multiplayer? Both disc and club golf can be played multiplayer with one shared remote.
TW10 utilizes MotionPlus for regular, golf club golf too, I'm just more interested in the disc golf mode - that use of MotionPlus is more compelling to me, but the regular golf looks like it will be great with M+ as well. If you want info on the regular golf mode that is easily found. If I stop being lazy I'll include some links to info here, but for now...

I've never purchased or played any EA Sports game, nor have I ever purchased (as far as I know) any game developed by any of the branches of EA.
However, I am watching this game closely. Its looking like it might be really good.
I recommend changing the thread title to something more informative at first glance, like "Tiger Woods 10 (Disc Golf mode and Motion+)"

OK let me ask a question.
Is the "Disc Golf" the only motion plus feature? Or will the MP work in normal golf, too?
Me thinks this, as well as many other games, will be like games that include the balance board: It can be used, but not needed for the main game....

The Wii MP works for all facets of this game. It's being bundled with this game before any other as a showcase for the peripheral. No longer must we suffer through shitty Wii Sports golf!

Ok, Ok, I made the OP and title "regular golf" friendly, or at least more so then before. :) Yes, TW10 uses MotionPlus for both modes of play. One thing I'm wondering is will we be able to play disc golf online? You can play regular golf online, but I haven't found any info on whether or not you can do the same with disc golf.

7 days until release! I am planning to put in a pre-order at Gamestop as soon as the trade-in deal becomes offiicial. Thanks for the tipoff on the amazon price drop hdtvrand. I also added the GS Powertrade that is expected (though not yet listed on their site), and added two more sources for the game. wherehouse.com is a site you can trade games, music and movies into, so though their price is MSRP they may still be a good option for some.

Updated OP to note that the June 8th date is actually the ship date and not the available date, at least according to Gamestop where I put in a pre-order last week. Gamestop told me they will have it available tomorrow, Tuesday, June 9th.
Also perhaps of note is that Amazon is now showing a 1 to 2 week wait from them. Either the game has pre-sold really well and they've sold out of their first batch already, or they aren't getting that many copies initially, or there is a delay in the release.
EDIT: I also note that wherehouse.com is listing it as "out of stock" with only a "notify" option. I'm not sure if that's how they've always been listing it, or if that is a change. Buy.com is saying usually ships in 24 hours - I don't know how reliable their stock claims are. My experience has been that deepdiscount will only inform you of stock after the order is placed.

It officially "ships" today. Stores may not have it until tomorrow, though. The links I provide are to the bundle version which includes one MotionPlus, so the MotionPlus ships the day this ships at the least. The stand-alone MotionPlus Gamestop shows as shipping within 24 hours, so presumably it will also be available tomorrow. However, Amazon is showing the standalone MotionPlus as shipping on the 15th or some such date, so maybe all this stuff is actually delayed and not really sold out? I don't know which it is. I guess I'll find out tomorrow when I go to pickup my preorder of the bundle.

Mine arrived yesterday from the EA/Sims card deal. I only got a chance to play a little last night, but it felt pretty good. It was cool to go into disc golf mode and watch the hand on the screen match my motions, but I think I was playing on an easy setting, so the disc flew much better than it would have in real life. Hopefully I'll get a chance to try out a more realistic setting.
Also, for anyone who was planning to buy it, take the Motion+ (which also comes with an extended Wiimote condom, btw), and sell the game, know that the game included is marked "Not for Resale" and does not have a barcode, so reselling options may be slightly more limited.
Edit: One more thing I meant to mention was that the extra heft and length added by the Motion+ is perfectly suited to a golf game (makes it easier to envision as the shaft of a golf club), but was not noticeable/detrimental to its use as a virtual frisbee.

Did you take advantage of the EA cash cards deal at all? That's 50% off right there. If not, there's still the $5 off wii games coupon you get through email by signing up for the push play mailing list thing on the EA site.
As for me, I'm losing my mind over this... got it from the EA store and free standard shipping (didn't realize they offered free expedited until after I ordered). I was tempted to just order a second one with expedited and then returning the first. Now I'm waiting for the friggin thing. I know they will ship things often without the shipping confirmation but that only makes me more nuts. They confirmed shipping grand slam tennis so I guess I'll keep stewing until it gets here.

I did pick up my copy from Gamestop and have played it for an hour and half or so. First off, the Wii MotionPlus works just as advertised and really is great. Also, the disc golf is indeed a lot of fun. Actually I found it a little frustrating until I realized you could make practice shots before making your real shot. Doing that helps you get a handle on how to make your shot.
On the other hand, and while I don't find it *that* surprising, it's still disappointing to me that disc golf has been relegated to second fiddle in the game. The only thing you can do with disc golf is play it. You select a course and the only options are the number of players, handedness for each player, and whether or not to allow mulligans. You can't play in a disc golf tournament. You can't play disc golf online, and most importantly to me, you can't unlock locked courses by playing disc golf. To do that you have to play regular golf. Now, in fact the regular golf is very good and "real golf" does have way more depth to it then disc golf, but for me I just don't enjoy it as much.
The disc golf will also definitely be fun for parties, and the game will fit the bill until we get Wii Sports Resort, which now I am uber psyched about. Also, one thing is absolutely, positively clear: we need Mario Disc Golf!
EDIT: the Wii MotionPlus comes with a somewhat daunting looking set of instructions on how to connect the remote, how to connect a nunchuck or other attachment, how to disconnect any attachment and how to remove the remote. There's also a funky little accessory port plug gizmo that I haven't tried to fiddle with yet, but the instructions make it look like it will be a bit of a nuisance. Also the instructions say not to take the Wii MotionPlus device out of the remote skin. I'm sure you can do it if you really want to, though it isn't immediately obvious how you do it aside from tearing it apart. I don't think I would bother even if it were easy (and maybe it is and I just didn't see how), but there you go.
EDIT2: when playing disc golf or regular golf you can share a single remote, so that is good. However, it seems to be inconsistently supported in other areas/modes. I need to verify, but when we tried to play a "Party Mode" game, or whatever that is called, we couldn't select the same remote for all players. Annoying!

I am *not* an expert, but I think you need to whip the controller through it's arc, with the fastest point being at the bottom of your swing. So start with your wrists angled to the right (if right handed), and then as you swing down flick your wrists to the left, the combination of which makes the virtual head of the club move faster. I think that's essentially the idea when doing real golfing, but don't quote me on it. It helps to make a full follow through, including a bit of a pivot at the end. I have done real golf, but it has been a *long* time and I was never very good at it, so take my advice with a grain of salt.
In the disc golf mode I find, and in contrast, it is really easy to get a 100% throw. You don't have to move your arm or flick your wrist very fast to get 100%. I wish there were a way to adjust it so that you have to use a more realistic effort in order get the disc to go far. I didn't see any obvious such adjustment. It's a minor thing, though, as it's fun regardless, but still I'd like the option to make it require a more realistic amount of effort. Probably they view the disc golf as a party game and so opted for easier play. I'd like to see an entire disc-golf game from some developer that goes for more realism, at least as an option, though not necessarily more realism in courses (i.e. a Mario Disc Golf game would rock.)

TW10 with M+ is simply awesome. For the person asking about maximizing swing, you have to use a swing that's like real golf. Which means cocking your wrists at the top of the backswing, and making sure the wiimote is angled forward at the bottom of your stroke (like a golf club) and not pointing straight down. I think real golfers will have no problem picking up the nuances of this game. "Video jocks" might have a harder time of it. For putting, simply pretend that you're really putting for the distance, from backstroke to speed to follow-through. ANd it works.
The M+ can be easily removed from the rubber 'glove'; just peel it off. Works fine by itself.
Disc golf is awesome, but I agree that you have to soften your shots as compared with real life. It needs a very soft touch for approach shots, but apart from that the motion is the same as real disc golf. Angled shots have the same curving effect. And, crazy as it may seem, my backhand-grip over-the-right-shoulder upside-down throw (a high arc that drops fast) works perfectly in TW10, just like in real life! That is amazing physics. I had to try it, and was amazed that it simply worked. :applause:

Is the nunchuck used in this game? On Gamefly, the pic of the back of the box shows it, but their gameplay controls tab doesn't mention it. If it is used for non-gameplay elements like navigating menus, that is no big deal, but I hope you don't need it to golf.

Yes, that is in Tiger Woods 10, but it isn't putt putt and I didn't find it any fun at all. It's too hard. Your first "putt putt" hole shouldn't have you hitting and rehitting over and over to get it in the hole. It sucks.

I think that means it's being realistic. You've got to perfect your swing in order to make a good, hard shot. Or just don't try to hit 100%. You aren't Tiger Woods after all. :)

I have to get rid of this game. The real swing that is required for 100% in driving the ball SERIOUSLY hurts my left arm. It hurt for several days afterwards too. I've tried different ways and swings to get 100%, but it really does require a genuine swing and follow-through., and its hurting my arm. The game is incredibly fun and accurate, so I'm super disappointed.
The disc golf is just a gimmicky demo. Sure you get to throw a disc and its fun for a few minutes, but the disc putting is useless as your hand obscures the basket, and you have no sense of depth to the basket. Also, disc golf course are dramatically different beasts than ball golf courses. A ball golf course for disc golf is useless and unchallenging.

Golf is not about how "hard" you swing. You'll generate more power and be more accurate taking nice even full strokes. It's not about trying to power the ball down the fairway; a larger arc in your swing produces a faster club-head speed and that is where the power/distance comes from.
As a side note this game is pretty damn sweet in my opinion and I usually don't enjoy sports games. The motion plus feels much better than I had expected it to. (I lowered my expectations because I feel like I've been burned too many times by Nintendo)

Yep. I picked that up the other night after I posted. Now I just need to keep my wrists straight. :)
Speaking as someone who grew up playing competitive golf: don't expect your golf swing mechanics (if you have proper ones) to directly translate over to this. After a couple of rounds I started realizing that the grip to hold the remote isn't exactly the best or most comfortable for a golf swing. In real life I was a 6-8 handicap with no movement or a slight fade at best. In this game my natural swing produces a massive duck hook.
I am a little disappointed with it. Not sure what I was expecting when I bought it, but I was thinking I could just pick up the remote and make my regular golf swing as opposed to doing some gimmicky crap to make the ball go straight like every other game. I may end up keeping the motion add on, but I think this game will be short lived for me.

The disc golf isn't "gimmicky", just incomplete. I don't have any problems with my hand obscuring the view either. I agree what we need are courses actually designed for it, though. Probably best served in a disc golf specific game, rather then as part of Tiger Woods. Still it is fun here anyway. Just could be a lot more then what is provided.
I can't comment on how a real golf swing translates here, but I'm wondering if it's possible to directly translate a swing like that - when you get a new set of golf clubs isn't there an adjustment period? And here you are switching to a Wii remote. Quite a change. Maybe you should try taping the remote to your golf club. Just make sure you've got plenty of room. ;) No, I don't really suggest doing that. :) Maybe it isn't as realistic as it seems to us. It is the first such M+ game, so it wouldn't be a shock if they didn't get it exactly right yet.

Also, taking a practice swing is very hard to do, holding the A AND B buttons. You grip the remote awkwardly, and it doesn't translate to a normal swing.

06-15-2009, 12:43 AM
I'm not having any problem with the practice swing mechanic - perhaps this is a matter of size of your hands, though. They should have done it like they have it in the disc golf - a toggle - as that would avoid the issue.
Tonight was really the first time I've been able to put a significant amount of time into the game, actually. Boy do I stink. :) With All-Play mode on, though, I do much better and I'm really glad they have that option. I started a career and spent too much time designing my golfer, but definitely enjoy seeing my pot-bellied, broken teeth guy in the game. :) My first tournament (without All-Play on) I ended up in last and 20+ strokes behind. Now I'm in my second tournament, this time with All-Play on, and not doing too bad, currently at -2 and tied for 8th.
This is definitely a fun game.

Heh, what was clear to me was that we need EA Ultimate Frisbee 2010
It's pretty easy to take the wm+ out of the skin, I just peeled the skin back. It's still in one piece.
I also don't think it's that hard to plug the wm+ into the wiimote... sometimes the instructions just complicate things

Yeah, the instructions do complicate it. I did end up removing the skin and do prefer it that way. You can put it back on - it isn't actually attached to it.
EXStrike - try AllPlay mode. That definitely makes it easier.

I agree that proper golf swing mechanics are really not the way to go with this game - same as proper tennis mechanics really don't work in GST. The responsiveness and sensitivity are dead on and do translate your movements perfectly. The biggest problem I had to deal with was the fact that the backswing is completely irrelevant to the strength of your swing. It all depends on the velocity of your forward swing. This was a pretty lame way of simulating swing power and they definitely could've fixed that to be more true to real golf. It should have been a function of both of those factors together. Precision putting falls victim to this problem as well. That said, it does promote proper course management and is something I've mostly adjusted to.

I'm struggling to understand the concept of the backswing being relevant to the end product: hitting the ball, which seems to me is entirely a matter of how fast and what direction the club is moving when it hits the ball. I can see that doing a backswing would allow you to more consistently have a good forward swing, especially the flicking aspect of it, but I really don't see how or why your backswing itself should factor into what happens once the ball is hit. If you could start your swing with your arm already back and only do a forward swing and hit the ball well, then you hit the ball well. The backswing, I believe, is just a means to an end, not the end itself.
Of course I could be entirely wrong, but if so I don't understand. :)

I bought this game online from Gamestop on Friday and wasn't expecting to get until late this week. However, it got delivered to my house yesterday (woohoo!), and I was able to play disc golf with my wife, which was awesome. I also tried some golf, and I know that it's going to be a blast to play this game as I get more familiar with the play mechanics. I did create my own golfer, which was a pretty interesting experience, and I'm definitely going to do more golfing tonight.

Finally got this in last night and spent a couple of hours with it. I can't say I've played any of the previous Tiger Woods, so I have a fresh look on the series. Content wise, the game has plenty of modes to keep you entertained.
Motion+ certainly delivers as promise providing accurate 1 to 1 mapping of movements and motion. If you tend to have a slice in real life, it will reflect that slice in Tiger Woods 10. Additionally, putting is much more accurate than WiiSports and it is much easier to make small, precise putts.
I'm sure most of you will need more than one Motion+, so if you like Golf at all I would recommend picking up the bundle.

I'm still getting used to swinging the differenct clubs myself. If you're using a driver, then you need to use a full backswing and follow-through to get 100%. I think the speed at which swing the remote at the point that it makes contact with the ball affects things as well. Personally, I'm still trying to figure out how to consistently get various levels of sub-100% swings.

On a different note, I just want to say that I love this game. I created my own golfer, and I've been progressing through the tour challenges. I've completed all the easy challenges and about half the intermediate challenges. Last night, my brother came over and played the game for the first time. We played against each other on Banff Springs. I used by created golfer, and he used Tiger Woods. I eagled 3 times in the first 9 holes due to being able to hit some pretty long putts (both played on standard). The game definitely gives you a sense of satisfaction when you play a good hole/round/course etc. There's also an addictive quality to the game even when you're not playing well (gotta try one more time...). In short, this game is the first game on the Wii that I eagerly look forward to playing every day.

it's pretty annoying when you're playing a 2 round tourney and you obliterate the field in the 1st round, only to see everyone come back and put up ungodly numbers in the 2nd round just to keep it from being too easy for you. More often than not it causes me to lose

I conked out early last night, or I'd have taken you up on it. How about later tonight? I can't play too late, though and I'm pretty lousy - you have to patient for a lot of miss-shots. :) How about around 10 PM tonight (eastern)?
How do you play online with a certain person in this game? It doesn't work like other Wii games. Is there a friend code somewhere or does it forgo that?

Ah - sorry, we got in late and then we had to get our kids to bed. We only just got them to bed now. Playing at 8 isn't usually going to be an option for me as a result. Sometimes I could play starting at 9 or close to it, though.

Already read it soon after you posted it. I didn't need any more convincing, but if I did, that would have helped sell me.
I just wrote up some sloppily put together impressions for the other board I go to. Since I'm lazy, I shall do the copy-pasta:
I am not really a golf fan. I've never played anything but mini-golf, and watching it on TV is boring to me. But, since the 2005 edition, I have been a fan of the Tiger Woods series. My friend (and later roommate) Jake got me hooked on that game when he and his then-wife would have a group of us over to watch wrestling pay per views and drink beer. We'd always jump on Tiger afterwards, and it was a blast.
Not long after that, I got my own Xbox which came with the Tiger/NCAA '05 bundle. That edition was still my favorite, after '06 didn't offer much innovation, and '07 (at least on the 360) fucked up the gameplay. Although I have played all versions since 2005, '10 is the first I have bought since '07.
I completely suck at the game, going +15 on Banff Springs in my first try at going 18 holes. A lot of that was due to missed putts with the "Precision Putting" system. After I switched to classic on hole 15, putting became much easier. But after spending a couple hours doing the tutorials, playing 18 holes, and then creating myself for career mode, I can safely say I am hooked. Wii Sports golf was a huge disappointment, but this game- with the Wii Motion Plus, that is- is everything that game should have been, times a million.
I cannot recommend this game enough, and that's with me only doing the "Play Now" mode and having very little skill. I imagine that my appreciation of the game will grow once I gain some skill. That, and I can't wait to try multiplayer. As an EA Sports game, you simply sign in using the same account you would for other EA Sports games. No friend codes required.

Halfway through the first day of my first tournament with my created guy, and I'm +15. Standard is too hard for me, so I'm switching to All-Play... for now. I hope it's not too easy.

That first course is brutal. I think I ended up with something like +17 on my initial play. However, as you get used to the controls and the stats on your golfer improve slightly, you should see you score becoming much lower. Now, I shoot around -7 to -10 depending on the course so things do improve.

Upon the suggestion of the GameFAQs forums (crazy, I know), I decided to play the challenges first to level up my golfer before I delve into the PGA Tour career. It seems to be working fairly well. But some of the Hard level challenges are hard even on All-Play.
Speaking of Al-Play, it is waaaaaaaaaaay too easy. It's basically impossible to miss in most cases. But the good thing about Standard being difficult is that I never feel like the game is screwing me over. I know it's because I'm a golf neophyte and I need to practice my swings.

Note that on Standard the game doesn't pay attention to rotation for "controlling" hook/slice (or for producing accidental hook/slice). You only get that in Advanced mode. I wish there were a level between standard and advanced, such that you get the hook/slice, but can still, for example, get a putt preview.

Your swing must be pretty consistently straight then because I tend to hook my shots consistently on standard and have to really focus to keep by drives straight...

I believe in "normal" mode, you can use the Wii Motion+ to draw/fade, or use the pointer controls to "manually" create one.

Got a chance to try this out over the weekend.
I'm no golf fan at all, but it was a lot of fun. I play frisbee golf quite a bit, and while the physics there aren't where I'd like them to be (the putter seemingly has homing capabilities, and you can't tomahawk a throw because there's no rolling mechanics), it was good fun. I was surprised to see it let me side arm a throw, even though this made no bearing at all on the distance you could heave it (another downside, but eh).
Tried regular golf against a friend who has had it for a while. We did the "win per hole" thing (I don't know the terms) and I stomped him with Furyk. I picked up on the putting pretty quickly and was sinking some crazy putts here and there. He was astonished and annoyed - "I've been playing this for two weeks."
Anyway, great fun. I really hope EA is planning on making everything deeper, because while the game feels really good, this could be a tip of the iceberg moment.
Very impressive overall.

I'm thinking of selling/trading this game. There's no doubt that it's good, but All-Play is so easy that it's boring, and Standard is frustratingly difficult to the point that it's rarely fun. That, and my bad back doesn't react too well to the swing motions.

I've only had it for a day, but I would recommend this. Just from playing around with it last night and starting a career, it's exceptionally deep - which you wouldn't normally think of with the Wii.

I picked this up before I left for vacation and just played it today. What an awesome game. I've played a lot of golf video games, and motion control golf games, and must say this is the most enjoyable game to date. It's pretty much the fulfillment of the Wii as a console in my opinion. At least, it's what the Wii was supposed to have been at inception, at least in my mind. Absolutely worth the $60, no question about it. A stark contrast to Sports Resort, which is odd becuase I had such low hopes for this and such high expectations for Sports Resort.
The amount of gameplay here is fantastic. The only thing that would make it more than the tip of the iceberg for me would be downloadable content.
