I would think (as a fan of "techno" and "turntabalists") that with the technology they would be able to make a better game tha this; allowing more freedom to mix rather than regurgitate planned button executions.

Oh, I dunno...Everyone copies Konami who first invented the guitar game, why not copy their DJ game as well "Beatmania?"
They use the same controller set-up, although it sounds like the gameplay could actually involve mixing tracks. Not sure how that'd work in-game, so I'm holding my judgment.

I'm sure it is on Easy. But that is going insanely slow... and you don't seem to be contributing anything to the song, except for the occasional scratches. Hopefully they'll have it playable at E3.

It says it is on medium (the video at the top of the page). This is pathetic...

IGN's Bozon had this to say on NeoGAF:
"None of these vids do the game justice. I wish the entire planet was there during the actual pre-E3 demo... after watching someone play on harder levels I'm totally convinced."
My impression of watching someone play on hard/expert was "holy shit that looks hard," but that was months ago so it could have changed since then. I'm reserving judgement until I get to play it. I initially scoffed at the idea of Guitar Hero and ended up falling in love with it.
I would think (as a fan of "techno" and "turntabalists") that with the technology they would be able to make a better game tha this; allowing more freedom to mix rather than regurgitate planned button executions.
If even fans of the genre are turning against it, what hope is there for the mainstream?

Then why the hell do they allow for "medium" gameplay to be shown? Seems to ruin their point.

Totally agree.
This was the perfect opportunity to break away from the linear, hit-the-colored-button-at-the-right-time gameplay of the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games and evolve the music genre with a freestyle, "make-it-your-own" type of gameplay. I'm not sure how the freestyle gameplay would have been implemented, but it probably would have been better than this Malibu Stacy with a new hat Guitar Hero knock-off.
Not that thrilled with the soundtrack, either. Less mash-ups, more trance.
It's really a shame this doesn't look that interesting because the vibe of the venue was really good. Oh well, there's always Scratch: Ultimate DJ...

I think it is pretty hard to judge an interactive game like Guitar Hero or DJ Hero by just seeing the screen, it seems like something you really do have to play to understand. I'll reserve final judgement until I acutally try it.
That said, the videos really do nothing to spark my interest. I was interested to see what they did with this game since I'm more of a hip hop fan than a rock music fan, but this wasn't really what I envisioned. I'm not a big fan of the SIMON gameplay, and it looks more geared to techno fans than hip hop fans.

I really want this game to be good. And I gotta admit some of the artists revealed to me make me cringe, but I hope even the cheese tracks turn out catchy.
I did kinda like the sample drop of "The Zombies - Time Of The Season". I think I'm stealing that sample and using it from now on, its so good.
Also I think they are going to lean more towards the Hip Hop DJ, rather then the Trance, house, Techno DJ. But I hope they put out decent DLC that covers all types of Electronica. I know I would love some Breakbeat in there.
So far this is the only thing I care about at E3. My buddy is donig some on site support at E3 and I told him if he gets any where near a demo unit please tell me if it is any good.
I really want this game to be good.
I want this game to be absolutely shit, and sell likewise.

Activision is absolutely one of the most despicable publishers there is these days. I think that Activision is worse now, than EA was when they were at their worst in the early 2000s.
I never though I'd see the day when I actually totally respect EA, and utterly despise Activision.

Konami does exploding rectangles and Harmonix and Activision can't even compare. How pathetic.
Amusing trivia: Mendes is the final final boss song for its respective mix. As of late, Konami's done "interactive" background videos. As you can see above, your performance is shooting down that huge mecha (complete with lifebar!). Those smaller ones flying around aren't your partners, they were also "boss" songs themselves...and THEY took up the whole screen. Compare it to what you're seeing right now!

Actually, Activision was the one being sued, for trying to withhold code and resources in an attempt to delay their competitor's game release:

The way you word that is extremely misleading. I'll bet you Genius Products never receives a punitive damages reward, which is what they would be entitled to if Activision knowingly tried to delay the release of Scratch. If you read through the details of the suits Scratch is a mess.
http://www.gamasutra.com/images/scratch-transcript-may-7th.pdf
I'm sure Activision would have preferred to wait until Scratch released to purchase 7 Studios, but 7 Studios was at risk of dissolving well before that happened (source (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=23348)). Note that 7 Studios has absolutely nothing to do with the development of DJ Hero. They're actually getting paid to sit at home right now so as to avoid even the appearance of impropriety (source (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=23595)).

I'll agree that the vids look kinda uninspired, but I'll withhold judgment until we get some more details. Personally I'd rather just have a return to the track-hopping gameplay of Frequency/Amplitude. Apparently Rock Band on PSP is supposed to resemble those games somewhat?

Back to DJ Hero... by all accounts it made a lot of believers during E3. They were doing a stage show where they played 3 songs (one coop with a guitar) and walked through what all of the buttons on the controller do (crossfader, effects dial, green button for track one, red button for samples and blue button for track two). My wife actually liked it which really surprised me.

Regardless of how good or bad the gameplay is, I think they're kinda pushing their luck with this peripheral. Plastic guitars were a hard sell at first, but they tapped into the whole rock-star fantasy which is a pretty accessible concept. "DJ culture" is more of a niche thing, and I doubt that simulated record scratching is gonna capture the public's imagination in the same way that the more visceral toy guitar/drums experience did.

I was skeptical at first thinking they were just gonna do a cheap rip of beatmania, but after watching it on stage @ E3 at activision's booth, it kind of makes me ashamed of Beatmania. I mean Konami's had years and years to try and innovate the beatmania franchise, and the only thing they did was add more songs every year and 2 more buttons from regular to IIDX. It's become quite similar to how Koei's handled the dynasty warriors franchise.
I enjoy IIDX a whole lot (hell I bought a DJ dao controller) but DJ hero looked damn refreshing in comparison. I'm actually impressed with the innovations and the play style is much closer to actual dj-ing. Plus DJ Shadow collaboration is win

Everyone wants to be that dude in the booth getting the crowd shakin to Back That Azz Up. Oh, that was ten years ago? Damn I'm old.
It'll be cool if I get to make my own mixes but we'll see how it turns out. Thing is, you can buy software like this for the computer and mix your own stuff and it'll probably sound way better.

this is not about mix creating, it's just like any toy music game, it's about feeling like you're creating music without any of the skill required.

I just said it would be cool. I realize this is a toy game but that doesn't mean I can't wish for something more comprehensive. If I could make a simple mix that didn't sound professional at all but got people in my house up and shaking, that would be awesome. I'm not asking to be a real DJ with this game but I'd like to be able to make a custom soundtrack.

I'm really glad this won't allow for "more comprehensive" mix-making. Because the last thing we need now, is even more morons thinking that they're DJs. The generation of Guitar Hero "rock stars" is bad enough.
