The Mario games look good. I'm really excited for Metroid but I don't have a Wii and won't buy one until it's dirt cheap. The conference was good. Waaaayy better than last year.
What's up with that RE game? Didn't Steve die in Code Veronica, or is my memory hazy?
Takes place during the CV time.

You can check out Nintendo's press site. They have other games coming that weren't at the conference. This is how we found out about Mario Party DS and Super Paper Mario.

Got my answer - Monado (http://media.wii.ign.com/media/143/14354769/imgs_1.html) is some sort of RPG.
The screens suggest to me that this is Monolith's new game, since it reminds me of Baiten Kaitos.

Finally got caught up on this thread -- very excited for Metroid especially. But now I feel sort of ashamed that Super Mario Galaxy is still sitting in my backlog. I think I'll push it up to be the next on the list now that a sequel is coming.
My only real disappointment is that it took so long for Mr. Twist to be banned. Other than that, I look forward to (hopefully) finding some video of the conference this weekend.

I think Retro's working on the next Zelda title. After the Press event, G4 had Reggie on and basically gave the indication that Retro had the chance to do Other M, but wanted to do something else and are. What do we see today? Not Zelda, but a franchise formerly in Retro's hands. Somebody swapped places.

I'm not much of a Wii gamer, but after watching E3. I enjoyed Nintendo the most because they didn't talk on, and on like the others did, and they had the most exclusives I'm interested in which I never thought they would. I think Mario Brothers,Mario Galaxy 2, and that Metroid game will be must haves for me anyway. Also want the Resident Evil they mentioned, and Dead Space.

I remember that IGN mentioned that rumor in one of their podcasts. We know that Retro is working on a secret project (Supposedly, it was planned for GDC, but cancelled at the last minute), so I'd imagine that Retro would be working on one of three things:
A) That "Space Pirate side-story" thing.
B) Kid Icarus (After Factor 5 went kaput, it's tough to imagine anyone else working on it)
C) The aforementioned Zelda title.

With the increased quality of third party games and now the increased amount of first party core games, I can't see the Wii has no games argument being taken seriously ever except by the horde of sad console warriors on various message boards such as this.
Though Microsoft still wins because of Perfect Dark on XBLA. :bouncy:
I have to admit, the trailers on youtube make all the games look a little more interesting than how it first came out in the presser.
It still surreal to see Metroid Gaiden, as much as that appeals to me, though.

Reactions to the conference/releases:
-NSMB looks great, but the likely lack of online means it's probably a pass unless my wife miraculously expresses interest.
-SMG2 is a surprise, but really not something I was looking forward to. Not to say it won't be good, but it isn't really needed right now.
-Metroid looks refreshingly new, looking forward to more info on how it will play.
-Hopefully Golden Sun DS is more entertaining for me than the GBA games.
-Monado might make up for the lack of Soma Bringer localization (but yay the less exciting Glory of Heracles).

Played NSMB Wii for a little bit. I think all of the characters play the same because it auto assigned all of the characters. I kept dying because of the random people I was playing with so I was immediately turned off. Once someone swallowed me with their Yoshi and jumped in a hole killing us both. I was instantly reminded why my Wii hasn't been turned on in over a year. Another time I was repeatedly jumped on making it impossible for me to avoid a Goomba.

I post my personal opinion and you attack me. I'm not the one with issues.
Why are you so defensive? I bought a Wii on launch day even though I was travelling on vacation. I enjoyed Raving Rabbids, Wii Sports, Excite Truck, Zelda and SMG. But after that I was kind of over it. I have Wii Sports Resort preordered as well as Toy Story Mania, so it's not like I've completely written off the Wii. There just haven't been any games that I'm interested in.
I was excited to see NSMB Wii and actually took the time to play the game. I didn't like it. The reasons I didn't like it are very similar to reasons I don't like other Wii titles (i.e. crap like blue shells and crappy waggle controls). It's not like the Wii is the only system with titles like that. I hated You're in the Movies for the similar reasons.
If I want a casual fun games most Wii games don't do it for me. Pokemon Snap on virtual console works. Rock Band/Guitar Hero work. The copy of Hakuna Matata I imported because Nintendo won't release a Pokemon Snap 2 also works. Practically any 360 FPS with the difficulty cranked down to easy works as well.

"You're in the Movies" has something similar to "crap like blue shells and crappy waggle controls"? I had no idea! ;^)
It just seems like a silly complaint to me - you were playing with strangers (for what, 10 minutes? 20 minutes?) who apparently wanted to play it like it was Smash Bros. When playing the game with friends/family it will be fun. Lego Star Wars also lets you attack your partner and there are times when that can result in hilarity, but a friend would know when to stop being an ass, though of course first pushing it to its limits. :) In Lego Star Wars there isn't anything to even compete for, where as here there is. Once you have beaten the game you can then go back to favorite levels and compete in them, which is going to increase the longevity of the game. If you really don't like the idea you can just play it single player, ala classic Mario platformer style.
What the multiplayer, when people are playing it to compete, reminds me of is the 2-player mini-game in New Super Mario Bros. (DS) which I think is really fun. In the Wii game you can compete like that in any level in the game. That's awesome. Mind you, I would like it to have levels specifically designed for competitive play - I don't know if it has that, but I presume not since it wasn't mentioned.

Span Smasher sounds like it could be fun. Too bad there's no video yet, but I like the concept. It sounds, from the description, like you use the Wii MotionPlus enhanced remote to hit "Smasher" (a ball) toward objects. Here's the description:
Introducing a New Spherical Smash-Hit Hero
Span Smasher combines the hands-on fun of tennis with the nonstop action and instant
gratification of pinball. Smasher (name not final) is a floating ball with a lot of personality.
When his island paradise is threatened, Smasher springs into action. He bounces around
and smashes into barriers, aided by the motions of players and their Wii Remote™
controllers. Players use just one hand to swat him toward the objects they want him to
smash, and he does the rest.
FEATURES:
• Players who finish each section with three coins will receive a pearl. With three pearls, players can move on
to the boss stage of that particular level.
• During the game, Smasher and his friend take on different abilities and characteristics that change the way
they look and act to keep the challenge fresh. For instance, they might become huge, split into multiple balls
or turn to metal.
• The scenery of the game scrolls to present Smasher with new obstacles and rewards. Players must angle
their swings to help Smasher bust through barriers or collect keys to unlock the next segment of the game.
• Smasher can hang back at the edge of the screen to power up for an even bigger burst of energy. But if he
remains motionless too long, he might get eaten by the multi-headed dragon that pursues him.
• Span Smasher is used with the new Wii MotionPlus™ accessory, which adds even greater precision to
players’ swings.

You bat a smiling, sentient tangerine through walls of blocks. Seriously.
Span Smasher (http://wii.ign.com/objects/142/14286542.html) is one of the Big N's surprise showing here at E3 2009, a game we didn't really know anything about in advance of the show -- but, after having spend a while with it here on the show floor, we can tell you pretty much everything. It's all summed up in that intro sentence up there -- Span Smasher is a game where you play as a bouncing piece of fruit, and you use the Wii Remote to swipe, slap and knock him around the screen and blast through barriers built of breakable blocks.
This is a Wii MotionPlus-only game, developed by Artoon (http://games.ign.com/objects/027/027403.html) and set to be published by Nintendo sometime in the to-be-announced future. But however long the wait is, it might be worth it -- this little design is simple, but can get addictive.
One swipe of the Remote gets your character, The Smasher, rolling. He'll hit a barrier, break it, and then bounce back the opposite way -- ricocheting off the wall in a manner similar to arcade classic Arkanoid. You'll then swipe at him again, sending him at another block, to break it. Rinse and repeat.
You can swipe at The Smasher multiple times in a row if you want, course-correcting him in mid-flight to send him soaring around unbreakable obstacles. You don't want to constantly waggle the Wiimote, though, because waiting a few seconds in-between swipes allows him to power-up -- glowing with white, fruity rage. Then your next swipe will be super-powered, able to break through multiple blocks at a time without bounce back.
Also, the stage constantly scrolls. So you've got to move fast.
The E3 demo on display here on the show floor offered up three full levels and a boss battle. The levels were pretty snazzy, including some pinball-like slides that sent the Smasher spinning around the screen, keys you had to grab to unlock doors, multiple paths to progress and collectible items galore. Grabbing fruit pieces activated power-ups, like a Multi Ball and Fire Ball mode that each lasted 15 seconds or so before fading away. There were also special medals to collect along the way, and those determined your overall success in each stage -- grab three, and you passed the level. Grab less than three, and you failed.
The boss was a big, bad blowfish unrelated to Hootie and the band. His attacks were pretty visually impressive, as he puffs himself up with air and then exhaled a wave of flying blocks meant to impede you. You've just got to power through, though, and wail on that whale. Eventually, he deflates and dies. Game over, demo complete.
Overall, Span Smasher was a fun surprise here at the show, and really just a good example of the kinds of MotionPlus projects Nintendo has in mind to launch through the rest of 2009 and into next year. Span Smasher won't be your most anticipated title over the span of time between now and its release, but once you finally get your hands on it yourself you'll have a good amount of fun.
And really, you can't beat a game where the main character is, literally, a fruit.

Ooooh... I was just dreaming... MotionPlus Kirby's Dream Course (not a remake, a new game built around MotionPlus). That would be AWESOME. Pretty please? If they do it they'd better include the original as an unlockable, though.
Totally agree that we need more of the other characters now, and how about someone new? Oh, and Muscle March. We've got to get Muscle March. But we won't. Sigh. Still, I can't complain about the lineup.

I never thought I'd post in a Wii thread, but NSMBW is the first game that has me seriously wishing I owned a Wii. I sunk a ton of time into the DS one and it really took me back, the prospect of finally being able to play classic 2d Mario platforming with friends is very tempting. That, along with a few other older titles, actually have me considering the little white box of satan for the first time :D

Probably just me, but I don't think Kirby Wii would be good. I didn't really care for Kirby 64. Like, it was ok, but not great.

I remember when DKC1 first came out and I played the hell out of it for short time and never played the sequels. I recently tried to play DKC1 and got bored quick and a gave DKC2 a shot. I became annoyed after only 4 or 5 stages and I will probally never touch DCK2 again and I doubt I will ever give the third one a chance. The DKC games just haven't aged well unlike the Super Mario games. I can't pinpoint it but the gameplay is lacking something....

According to Wikipedia (prepare salt shaker), he was pressured to move Yoshi's Island graphics closer to DKC and he felt that DKC was popular only for its graphics and had mediocre gameplay. As a response he changed the graphics of Yoshi's Island to the well known crayon inspired ones.
I'll have to redact my previous statement, as the Paon company has been working on the recent DK games and has been using the DKC inspired graphics and characters and Nintendo themselves made DK-Jungle Beat. So there is a chance of a sidescrolling DKC-like game.
Even further, DK-Jungle Beat was just released in the New Play Control series, yowsa, I was off on this one.

So the vitality sensor didn't really sit well with me for a while. I think it's because the interface is so wonky; you have to clip the damn thing on your finger. It would be far superior if the sensor was built into the remote and it just sensed your heart rate as you played.
It seems as though all these peripherals are experiments from Nintendo and with Wii HD or whatever the next home system is called we're going to see the Wii remote perfected. It will definitely be that NES-SNES or N64-GCN type jump Nintendo is so famous for.

I never actually saw the conference video for that. So, only working off the image stills, I'm not anticipating a whole lot for this peripheral. Seems like it should get bundled with Wii Fit Plus or the next iteration of EA Active.

I was thinking the vitality sensor would be shown with some horror game (like maybe a new Fatal Frame or Eternal Darkness). Nintendo patented the sanity meter system used in Eternal Darkness, so perhaps this could be used with that game. Depending on your heart rate, the sanity effects get stranger and stranger, so you have to calm down to keep playing effectively. I don't get though how you can play while your finger is in that sort of device.

All of you imagining a Link with no sword, I don't think you have much to worry about. One of the selling points of the WM+ is that it makes sword wielding more realistic. I can't believe they'd pass up that opportunity to show it off. And I thought I read somewhere that they are even considering making Zelda Wii require the WM+. That seemed to indicate sword play to me.

I've never understood what the big deal about Link being right-handed is. It's a different Link in every game through generations. You would think at some point in the bloodline you have right and left handed Links.

I've been championing something similar over on DVDtalk. I like the way you think. My example was a zombie game where more zombies are thrown at you the higher your heart rate(or slows the action down to let you compose yourself, find health & ammo). Now imagine Left 4 Dead where it tracks everyone's heart rate and the zombies zero in on who has the highest heart rate and the remaining 3 are left to defend that one person. There are many possibilities, unfortunately people can't seem to expand their vision beyond WiiFit type usage.
Nintendo already released this device 10 years ago in Tetris64 and it worked great then. It, however, attached to your earlobe. I guess it was time to trot out more old tech and shove it in a white box to see how many gajillions they sell.
As for using this one with traditional controls, it could work if you can get the thing to stay on a pinky finger.

Depending on exactly what the Vitality thing measures, developer's could have some fun with it. In college I volunteered for some research that used a similar system for allowing locked-in people to use computers. I was told to think passionate, high adrenaline thoughts (sex, murder, that type of stuff) to move it one way, and cool, relaxing thoughts to move it another. Wasn't the most precise tool in the world, but I was able to play a much-slowed down version of Pong with it.
If it could measure individual hearbeats, then imagine a target-shooting game where the screen vibrates in tune with your heartbeat. In order to shoot the target accurately, you'd have to slow down your heart and take the shot in between beats, just as real rifle teams need to.

Also an idea I had would be options in a game like Mass Effect. So when talking to people, your dialogue options depend on what you are feeling. So if you are angry, you may have more options to slap or yell at people or if you are calm, you might forgive people or something.
Of course, Nintendo will likely first use it in a Wii casual game like perhaps Wii Relaxing where the goal is to stay relaxed and calm.
I think the idea of the vitality sensor is good if used properly. I don't like that you need to put a finger in the device for it to sense your body's data however, but I can see why that is done in order to get better reliability and to keep the costs down. In the future however when it becomes cheap, a laser vibrometer or some other means of obtaining this data wirelessly should be used and I think that is when this type of thing will have an impact.

Well, it almost looks like the area around that hand of Link's is burning red, almost like its loud roar is telling Link to grasp victory.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that after training in a dojo, maybe after getting into a few brawls, Link learned the ultimate attack from the master, something far superior to any flimsy piece of metal. Those red flames in front of Link and his sword-less hand can only mean that he has learned one thing...

It was playable on the show floor too, so some previews popped up. In the demo level that they played, you fight through hordes of monsters until you reach a mid-boss that is in the trailer. This particular boss looks like a Giant Chicken, who attacks by throwing smaller chickens and lasers all over the place. And just what was the name of this formidable foe? The Cock Keeper.
