View Full Version : My Backlog of games, and the general scheme of things...

Well, like many of you, I have a library of 40 games that I have yet play (or even boot up). I think that this is natural, given the nature of this website. Find the deals, buy when cheap, play it whenever. But as the pile grows higher and higher (especially with the newest TRU sale), I've been wondering if I have somewhat of a videogame-buying addiction. After all, one of the things that i most look forward to is jumping on a good deal. I've probably spent close to $600 on videogames alone since the start of CAG (granted, that $600 bought me ALOT of games), but it's alot of money none the less. After much thought, however, I've come to the conclusion that it is not an addiction.

Much of the reasoning behind the refuting of said addiction centers around the huge backlog of games that I have. I kept thinking "Man, it must have a purpose somewhere, in the general scheme of things...", and while walking to class today, I figured it out.

Looking ahead a year or two, the next wave of consoles will be released, and the production of PS2, XBox, and GCN games will be significantly reduced in favor of the newer systems. Since I for one do not plan to spend $300-$400 on a new launch system, I'm going to need something to keep me busy while i wait for a price drop. After seeing the rediculously good deals that are available right now, the smartest thing seems to be to wait until the new systems hit $200. By then, there will be an abundance of cheap games for it as well, and I'll be saving even more money in the future.

...getting back to my stack of 40 (probably closer to 60) unplayed games. This is what will be keeping me busy until the new systems drop in price. I figure by the time I get one of the next-gen systems, my list of unplayed games will be almost cut in half. And what happens to that other half once I get a new system?

...There's a whole life of gaming ahead of me, and I'm bound to have the time at some point! :D

LOL ... Interesting analysis. That's what I'm going to have to answer the next time my boyfriend sneers "Another game, ain't you got enough you haven't even opened yet?"

I like it! :P

Good argument, I'll have to remember that to tell my wife :)
The thing is, you have to make sure that:
A. the games you have now, that aren't played, don't lose their novelty so that you won't be in the mood to play them [your tastes could change, or whathaveyou.]
B. You don't find something *else*, non-game related, to spend your money and time on. Before Christmas, I was really into DVDs/'home theater', buying a bigscreen TV, multidisk progressive scan dvd player, 500 watt HT system and 100+ dvd's, including many multiple-hour TV sets [Outer Limits and CSI alone are over 40 hours.] [This was over a couple years.]
For Christmas, my wife got me a PS2. I now have [thanks to bargain prices on games for a console that's been out a couple years, and this website] 20 games, including at least 8 that I have either never played, or played less than 5 hours, and I've watched maybe 3 DVD's since then, and that was only because I'm trying to get my fifteen bucks/month worth out of Netflix. I still have at least 15 DVD's that are still in plastic.
I'm having more time now, that our baby is sleeping more regularly and we've pretty much moved in to our new house and finished unpacking, but still, it's tough. And then thinking Okay, what to play now, unlike the days of PS1 when I would get one or at most two games a month, and play at most one or 2 games [generally different types] at a time.
One of the arguments I use is, 'It's too cheap *not* to get it!' That one doesn't go that far, though, especially if you pay for it with a credit card that has a balance on it....

LOL, not an addiction? Be honest man, you bought all of those games without thinking about the next gen consoles. And like you said, you had to think of a reason for it all. It just an excuse you came up with to justify your spending.
Nothing wrong with that though, unless you're broke and still buying...

I'm sure that I am among the minority. I don't jump on every screaming deal that pops up here. Mainly because a) I don't own an Xbox, and b) because I manage to talk myself out of most purchases with the "I'm getting married soon" argument. Id be screwed if I were among the majority because, unlike evilmax, I intend to purchase at least 1 next gen console at launch. This also means I intend on buying the launch titles which we all know do not go on sale for at least 6 months.

Makes me wonder what I am going to do after I am married (which is in three weeks by the way.)

I also don't own an Xbox, though every other next gen console (Gamecube, PS2, GBA). Most of the time I can just plead with my dad to buy me a new game. If i chip in 20 bucks or something to a new game i want, he normally throws in the rest for a few chores from me or if i'm being rewarded (birthday money, good report card, yeah)
Or, if he's so concerned that i'm not playing any of my games, I'll just take a fascination to *insert random game here* and play a few i haven't in awhile, then convince him to let me get it.

As soon as your turn 18 I'll have a bunch of other ways you can earn money.

That's not funny. I'd never sell myself or be a hooker.

So I'll cross those things off the list then.

What ever the case one thing is for sure, some where, some place, there is a guy willing to pay top dollar to watch you cover yourself in imitation maple syrup and goose feathers while eating a banana.

HAHA. True that. Though its a sad society we live in these days so it doesn't say much.
Guys seem to go crazy whenever girls eat bananas or lollipops. Just the way that we suck on them... though if a guy is getting way too into it I just go...
CHOMP!
on the banana. And trust me, they get out of it real fast :D.

Who the hell sucks on bananas anyway unless they're trying to emulate said act that would produce said reaction in said pervert?

Because it is fun to lure boys into traps, that's why. Especially immature ones who eye me EATING the banana in the first place, there need be no sucking involved and they already get excited.
and besides, lollipops are the same story.
same with candy canes.. and jolly ranchers.. the list goes on and on.

bananas are high in potassium, not protein. slight difference.

I haven't really gotten any deals off CAG since I started coming here. I mostly just come for the community, and I know yall love my addition to the forums, right  ? But there have been deals I would've taken advantage of if I had the money right then. But whenever I know I'm getting money, I almost always have a plan before I get the money, then comes a cool deal right after I spent my money on something I now regret. If I had a job, then yeah, I know I would DEFINITELY be using alot of these deals. Like the current Mark of Kri one. I'm not that interested in that game, but I've heard it's good, and for $10, I'd be there if I had the money.
