Buying 2 copies of Everwood alone ain't hoarding, but:

Going back 2 to 3 times a week + bragging about your loot + not leaving any sets for everyone else = hoarding.

I think what people do on CAG is great (trading and so-forth), but to taunt me about having what I want is pushing it a bit. And that's why that lady rubbed me the wrong way, that's all...

So this lady actually told you she was picking up multiple copies of shows..or are you just assuming that because she keeps coming into the store?

Anyways:

Went to 3 stores today..al which are an hour to 2 hours from me.just because I had nothing better to do, and the bay City location hasnt put anything out:

West Genese County: All I found here were Popeyes and Josie and the Pussycat sets. A few $6 sets like The OC..nothing great. I picked up a Popeye here.

Dixie Highway: A couple sets of Lois and Clark Season 3....I decided not to get it since I'd like a full set.....a couple Batman Animated series volume 4, and a couple tales from teh Crypt Season 3. Already own all the Tales and Batmans though. And there were Josies and Popeyes as well. And 2 copies of Murphy Brown..which i nabbed 1 of.

Telegraph Rd. Pontiac:

No $3 sets yet. Lots of $6 sets though. many copies of both Volume 1 and 2 of Pinky and the Brain and Volume 1 of Animaniacs

I will not be going back to these stores though..so don't ask me to pick you up anything.

I grabbed an ad at the Pontiac store and it says the $3 sets will be out Sunday..so when I go to Bay City tomorrow I'll just plant that in their face if I cant find anything.

BTW, I went into an FYE today, and saw a lot of these sets marked down, new. Doubt it's coincidence. They also had Veronica Mars S1 and S3 marked down, which aren't part of the BL stock, afaik.

She told me that she had been up to the store 2 or 3 times in the past week AND that she had gotten a bunch of stuff in that timeframe. I was only half-paying attention when she named off the shows and I didn't bother to ask how many of them she had bought or what she was doing with them, but she talked like a reseller (or someone wanting to make a profit) to me. Who really knows though. Maybe I'm just bitter about not finding half the stuff I want yet :D

But eh, what's done is done. Maybe I'll get lucky on a stop there tomorrow. I have promised myself I will make a daily trip until I find the stuff I want. The closest BL is only 10 minutes from the house, so if I find the sets it'll be worth it.

I went to the local Big Lots store yesterday in Waxahachie, Tx and today in Desoto, Tx. I was able to pick up the following for $3 each:

Flinstones, seasons 1-6
Batman the Animated Series, seasons 2-4
Tales From the Crypt, seasons 2,3, and 5
Tracey Takes On, season 1
Lois and Clark, seasons 3-4
Favorite Holiday Favorites
Appleseed Machina (metal box)
Wacky Races

Generally these are getting picked over as soon as they are put on the shelves. The employees of the stores were concerned that they would be out of the $3 sets before the ads were even released.

I have been to Big Lots more in the last two weeks than I have in a lifetime. I hope they do more of these sales in the near future.

C'mon, is it too much to ask (yeah, I know it can be a pain, and possibly a scam too), but if you go to a big lots and they have the stuff us cags have been in a frenzy over, like Batman/Superman animated series season, Animaniacs, Powerpuff girls, Samurai Jack (well those all what I want, but I know most here would be willing to pay/trade decently for) and the supply is definately not enough to meet demand, but if you have a few extra bucks... pick up as many copies as the high demand ones that you can!

I have crappy BL's in my area, but I'm willing and know many more cags would willingly pay a bit extra for your time/gas/shipping, and be eternally grateful to boot. I try to do it with target clearances, the few times I have spare cash.

/rant

btw, anyone have any of those I listed they'd be willing to part with (mainly Batman:AS and Animaniacs, and Superman:AS)

anymore cries for trades, I will keep in the trade thread.... just tired of seeing "they had a bunch of "popular title a" when I was there" I'd kill for any volume of Batman:as... so anyone need a hitman?

Wow. And here I thought Warren was out of your way.

When I get up in the morning, I'm going to go to the only store close to me that I haven't seen put the cheap stuff out yet. The only problem is that I haven't been there since last week, so it might have come and gone...but the first trip only turned up a handful of West Wing and Pinky and the Brain sets (and an inexplicable number of James Bond movies), so I'm hoping that I'll get lucky.

whats the going price on most?

Most of the ones I saw are marked down to $9.99 new, like ER, Lois and Clark, Dukes of Hazzard and a few others I don't recall right now, with all 3 seasons of Veronica Mars being $14.99, but I didn't see the high demand ones like Batman/Powerpuff. It's not bad considering ER and Dukes were $6 at Big Lots. OC and West Wing were there too, but I don't remember if it was $9.99 or $14.99. Not as good of a deal, but for $9.99, it's probably still better than getting someone to ship it.

On another note, they have a lot of other boxed sets that's like $10-$20+ over MSRP, like $59.99 for Battlestar Galatica 4.5 (49.99 MSRP), House sets at 59.99 (But I guess that's actually MSRP cause I've never seen anyone sell it that high), and other stuff.

Well I got good pickups today. When I arrived in the morning all I found were a couple of Joey, West Wing, Duke of Hazards. I decided to look around the store for a couple of minutes. While I was checking what the soft drinks, an employee passed beside me with a huge box full of DVD box sets. I asked her if I could browse the box and this is what I picked up:

All $3.
Veronica Mars S2
Popeye The Sailor Volume 1
Birdman & The Galaxy Trio: the complete series
Wacky Races: The Complete Series
Dastardly & Muttley in Their Flying Machines: The Complete Series
Top Cat: The Complete Series
Jonny Quest: The Complete First Season
The Flintstones S1, S3, S5
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Academy Awards Animation Collection

Total came out to $36.22 w/tax.

I don't understand why FYE is marking these sets down, Big Lots won't be carrying these for long, so it's probably in their best interest to just wait it out.

Or else they simply want to cash in on people who are aware of the Big Lots sale prices. Which for right now is a good idea.

I had a manager at a Big Lots tell me that they are a "test market" for these DVDs and if they do well they will continue to get them though, which I doubt seriously that Warner Brothers is going to manufacture DVD Box Sets for Big Lots to sell for 3 bucks.

No they aren't. Its overstock closeout product that Big Lots is selling to us. Notice the titles you are seeing in these? They are all titles that have been out for a good deal of time that for the most part didn't sell very well. Come on how many people for god sakes do you think actually would spend over $100+ for that NFL America's Game set? That's why those $100+ sets are now selling for $10 at Big Lots. Because they didn't sell.

i tried that ad thing saturday when everything was gone. Manager told me INSIDERS get the ads on thursday so ALL sunday ads get placed on Thursday.. If i dont like it then i should of been an insider... Very rude how they said it as well....

Wrote to best buy webpage and they said its up to each store how they want to handle the sale items but they do have the right to put items out early.

i would love to see all stores drop their prices on box sets..... Box sets should be treated like video games... Instead of having a crap box set sit on the shelfs for years, sell them off for 10 or under... I would buy a lot more series at 10 or under then paying 30+ for them

I also found out about that insiders thing today. I'm just wondering when on thursday they put stuff out? I'm thinking about checking sometime on thursday evening and friday morning this week.

I went out to the New Haven store and there wasn't much left there. A couple wonder woman s2 sets and several pinky and the brain sets. I'm just so annoyed that there isn't anything left. I'm really wanting to find that samurai jack set and a couple of the batman sets. It looks like I'll have to go to ebay for some of these.

Three of the stores near me had put out and sold through their cheap DVDs in the past week. With today's trip to the fourth store, I think I'm out of the Big Lots game, barring any miracle finds down the road.

Today's trip wasn't quite the holy grail I'd hoped, but I guessed right: the store did put out the $3 sets for the first time this weekend, and they even had one I hadn't come across before, the Huckleberry Hound Season 1 set (which I got mostly for the Yogi cartoons that were included). I also picked up Top Cat and Space Ghost, both of which I'd passed up before realizing I've spent $3 on much dumber things before.

My total haul:
Flintstones Season 1
Flintstones Season 2
Flintstones Season 3
Flintstones Season 4
Flintstones Season 5
Flintstones Season 6
Huckleberry Hound Season 1
Popeye 1933-1938
Space Ghost and Dino Boy Complete Series
Top Cat Complete Series
Wacky Races Complete Series
Animaniacs Volume 1 (thanks again, FlamedLiquid!)
Animaniacs Volume 2

That's eleven $3 sets, and two $6 ones, for a total of $45 for a whopping 8,063 minutes (or just over five and a half days) of cartoons. The best part? Thanks to rebates from Micro Center and FYE in the form of prepaid Visas, I spent a total of $10 out of pocket. :D

The Hanna Barbera stuff has been the most pleasant surprise for me. I grew up watching those cartoons, on Cartoon Network (back in the days when they not only ran cartoons, but ran the old ones) and early morning TBS reruns. I hadn't planned to buy any of the sets - especially since I found them well before most of you did, if memory serves - but for $3 each, it wasn't a hard call. Guess I can't complain about my cable package not including Boomerang anymore...

I didn't find everything I wanted (I would've loved the Golden Collection sets, and Samurai Jack and Powerpuff Girls would've been nice), but I'm happy with what I found...even though the only sets off my list I'd ever thought about buying before were the Animaniacs ones. ;)

Theres a lot of series that do that. Look at all the DVD show 2 packs at Wal-Mart and Target. Majority are priced between $20 and $30. But they are mainly FOX series.

I think I'm pretty much done with this sale too. Spent the last bit of my check today, and I've been to like 10 Big Lots in MI............7 which were way out of the way for me. lol. NP on the trade Walrus. I'm glad I traded with you because I havent seen Flintstones Season 2 pop up anywhere. Have seen Top Cat at the majority of the stores though. Top Cat was always one of my favorite Hanna Barbera cartoons as a kid..so I couldnt pass that up for $3. And its always good to boost the Trade rep..especially since I've been sitting at '1' for quite some time.

I also barely have enough gas to make it to a gas station come my next check on Friday. That's probally the only advantage of unemployment checks I guess........you can dwindle your gas down to nothing. lol

I have a friend in TN that will hopefully snag me a few more sets I couldnt find here. The Looney Tunes set would have been mind blowing to have found, but I'm pleased with everything I got. cant complain for $3 and $6 sets. I'm just pondering why they had some priced at $6 and than a new shipment of titles at $3.

My more than likely final haul:

$3
--------
Flintstones Season 2
Flintstones Season 3
Flintstones Season 4
Flintstones Season 5
Top Cat Complete Series
Wacky Races Complete Series
Popeye Volume 1
Pebbles and Bamm Bamm Complete Series
Josie and the Pussycats Complete Series
Murphy Brown Season 1
The War At Home Season 1
Appleseed EX Mahcina Steelbook
God, the Devil, and Bob
KITE Volume 1
KITE Volume 2
KITE Volume 3
KITE Volume 4
Lois and Clark Season 1
Lois and Clark Season 3
Adventures of Superman Season 1
Adventures of Superman Season 2
Adventures of Superman Seasons 3 and 4

$6
--------
Joey Season 1
The New Scooby Doo Movies
Animaniacs Volume 1
Animaniacs Volume 2
Pinky and the Brain Volume 1
Pinky and the Brain Volume 2
Nightmares and Dreamscapes Complete Series
The History of Rock and Roll 5 Disc set

I know GTD&B and the KITE Volumes weren't part of this sale, but I bought them during this whole spending spree.

So $112 + tax.....about $119..and figure in probably $30 spent in gas..if not more.

$150 well spent. :)

Am definitely hoping to see more tv show sets for cheap at Big Lots.

Well, I hit 4 big lots across 3 states yesterday (I had to go anyway, so I hit some stores). I hit one in Michigan City Indiana and they guy said "I just put out a whole bunch of thundercats sets this morning over there". I check the shelf and they are all gone. He said "there must have been 20 or so" and he pulls out a cart of DVDs and says I am welcome to look through them. I found 2 Thundercats S1 V1 sets! (one for me and 1 for my bro) I will be answering PMs this afternoon for other pick ups when I get organized.

I definitely recommend hitting any stores which hadn't put out anything prior to today. Hit one store which had no sign of the $3 sets this week only to find they stocked their shelves today. Once again though, no sign of Flintstones S1 or S6 as well as no sign of Crypt S1 which are all I was mainly looking for.

Did find a few Huckleberry Hounds which I hadn't seen at any stores before so that helped a little.

No sign at all this past week or today finding the $10 sets however.

Today I saw Westwood Season 1 for $3, and several $3 Nickelodeon DVD's, the most notable being Rugrats, BUT.......they were the new episodes, which IIRC, sucked horribly. If they were the older eps I probably would have bought them. Also saw the usual 20+ copies of dukes of hazard, OC, ER, night court, etc.

Still no sign of flinstones or Tales from the crypt. I picked up Pinky and the brain Vol. 2 for $6 though. I will be checking back later this week to see if they put anything new out. Flinstones and tales from the crypt seasons I want badly.

It is not a sale in the typical sense. This will be the regular price for the DVDs. According to an employee the $6-$10 sets are "seasonal" (of course at big lots, that may be defined as full seasons, but I am pretty sure they meant seasonal) and the $3 sets will trickle in until stock is depleted.

doubt you will ever find either one of those for years at big lots ... they are selling way too well to dump them to a clearence center

do you know how often they get new stuff in. the only reason i asked is because the closest big lots by me is 30 minutes away.

Box sets are usually 5+ years old..and usually shows that dont do so well. And boxsets are also pretty rare finds aside from these ones the last few weeks.

Don't expect to see anything like Supernatural or True Blood at big lots for another 5 year or so, IF they even get it, Big Lots just randomly gets things and there is no telling what or when they ever will get these.

I was just asking, because someone said they bought the 7 season of smallville on blueray at big lots for 6 dollars.

I went when it opened today hoping to get some decent things especially since nobody in this thread or the DVDtalk thread seemed to mention my store but all i got was a opened season 2 Flintstones...2 wacky races sets, war at home, and appleseed machina steelbook (with best buy exclusive book)

i guess i may have to keep an eye on ebay or amazon to get the rest of Flintstones

Don't worry, once ebay and amazon get flooded enough with these sets, nobody will buy them, the demand will go down, and they'll be big lots prices again. Hopefully all the bastards who thought they would make a fortune off these will make no more then a dollar profit. :applause: Maybe someday I'll see some of these at a garage sale in mint condition, because they couldn't move them, and offer a buck.

amazon almost already is tundercats season 2 vol 1 and 2 are around 9 and 10 new shipped

it would be 6.42 here ... less then 3 bucks extra to get them ship via amazon...

too bad i dont have the room for them ...... He man was 10 per season last year at best buy and still have not recovered (still can get them off amazon dirt cheap) so for the hoarders who think they can just wait till the prices go up.... i wouldnt hold my breath.

(though with goozex starting to take DVDS next month it be interesting to see what these sets would fetched there)

I've been doing searches on these and alot of them are already starting to fall. Most of these are starting to hover around $4-$6 + shipping, with a few exceptions. I think the ONLY set out of all of these that will still hold any decent value after the wave dies out is the Looney Tunes 1-5 golden collection. It's always been pretty pricey.

If anyone is frustrated at not finding what you want, wait until the prices plummet online. Then buy them. I'm gonna use some of my P2S credit if I luck out........

Wow, I found a lot more than I expected to at my local Big Lots... I picked up:

The Flintstones - Seasons 1-6
Top Cat - Complete series
Wacky Races - Complete Series
Dastardly & Muttley in Their Flying Machines - Complete Series
Popeye 1933-1938
The Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm Show - Complete Series
Huckleberry Hound - Vol 1
Super Friends - Legendary Super Powers - Complete Series
Birdman & The Galaxy Trio - Complete Series
The Perils of Penelope Pitstop - Complete Series
Wait Till Your Father Gets Home - Season 1

... and The Drew Carey Show - Season 1, which is the oddball of the lot.

Now all I need is a box of Cookie Crisp & a pair of Star Wars pajamas, and I can recreate my childhood :)

The Big Lots in town are pretty much completely wiped out. However, we went to another FYE to check prices on these box sets, and this one didn't have them marked down, so I'm sure it's YMMV.

However, my gf found a copy of Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis at FYE's, which I've been wanting, and it was only $15. I just hooked the PS2 back up for it.

Well I'm on the West Coast (Sacramento area) and have hit 5 different Big Lots over the past week and have found only Flintstones 2-5, so I'd say seasons 1 and 6 are tough to find, not only on the Left Coast, but all over it appears.

My store is so weird, they are chain moving their inventory.

When this first started, they only had scooby doo. They had a ton, but then we had the friends and family 20% off. All of scooby doo disappeared and they had a ton of flintstones seasons 4, 5 and 6. Two days later, they were all gone and replaced with about 20 wacky races, popeye and like 3 other shows. Then today everything was gone and all they had were 4 copies of dasterdly and muttley, a few Top Cat, a shelf full of lois and clark and about 5-6 Appleseed steelbook.

The other stores around here havent gone through nearly as much stock, it seems. Still no luck on Johnny Quest or powerpuff girls, which was pretty much the only thing I wanted for myself.

the employees over here are a bunch of lazy asses it seems, because it took them almost a week after the ad was released to put out the P&B, animaniacs, OC and all those. Wonder how long they'll wait to put out the new batch. Maybe it's a strategy to retaliate against the hoarders.

Technically, the ad started today...but the ads get sent to "insiders" (still not sure what that means) on Thursdays, and apparently the stores are supposed to have the merchandise out for that. The store I went to yesterday afternoon had the signs and ads out already; judging from their stock, the one I went to this morning actually did wait until today.

Then there's the first store I went to, which had the Hanna-Barbera stuff on Friday of last week. :D

Anyway, you're right: this is definitely a YMMV situation.

Well, I was the 2nd customer in this morning and the first one to look at the dvds. I got a few things but nothing of the sorts of The Powerpuff Girls set like I and many others have been looking to find. I did get:

Top Cat Complete series (dad's christmas present)
Batman The Animated Series Vol. 1/ Superman The Animated Series Vol. 1 (two pack) x 2
Popeye 1933-1938
Huckleberry Hound Vol 1 (dad's christmas present)
Super Friends Vol. 1 x 2 (one is for my dad's christmas present)
Appleseed Ex-Machina Best Buy Exclusive w/ sticker

Not a bad haul really...my wife wanted to go after I got off work so we went back up there and picked up Everything Is Illuminated and God, The Devil, and Bob both for $3, so I can't complain except for not getting my beloved Powerpuffs!

I went out today and came back mostly happy-- found Mission Hill. I was escatic about that. Also, along with my Appleseed Ex Machina steelbook, I found the collector's edition of Dark Crysal. Be sure to look out for that. Also, this could be a new find, but found season 1 of Huckleberry Hound, which is actually one of my more favorite Hanna Barbera cartoons, so I was pleasantly surprised to have found it. EDIT: Not new, d'oh!

Aside from that, a bunch of repeats that don't need long, drawn out repeating-- the old Superman live action show (2-6 for me, I didn't find season 1 sadly) Penelope Pitstop, Josie and the Pussycats, etc.

Almost got into a scuffle with a hoarder today.

I got there right at open, and headed for the DVD rack. When I got there, this lady barges in front of me with a shopping cart and starts literally sliding DVDs off of the shelf with two hands and dumping them into her cart as fast as she can.

We're talking she grabbed 12+ sets of Flinstones Season 6. She was hardcore.

I ducked to the side and under her arms, and grabbed the last two copies of Batman: TAS Vol2. When I stood back up, she glared at me and said:

"Excuse me, sir, I was here first. Those are mine."

I blinked in disbelief. Was she serious? I said as much.

"Yeah. I was here before you. I was looking at them. Giive them to me."

I told her no, I was just fine with *my* two DVDs. I'd be paying for them and leaving.

She glared again and said "Well I never!" She looked like she wanted to hit me. Lady was getting furious over Batman! Granted, $3 Batman, but sheesh.

"Yeah, *never* got these two box sets. See ya, lady!" I replied smartly, and walked away, going to the checkout. She followed me, and told the clerk that I took them from her cart.

He looked at me, then at her, rolled his eyes, and helped me to check out. The DVD rack is right near the registers--he knew I didn't take them from her.

Yeesh. I never knew that "BigLots iz serious business" until today.

Big Lots really needs to put a limit to how many people can buy on these. Its awful that they let (obvious) resellers just waltz on in and buy all these up. I sent off an e-mail to Big Lots online with this being mentioned to them along with a few other complaints about how my store has handed these boxsets (and their customer service). I'll let you know what becomes of this but honestly... I don't expect much of anything outside of my complaint hitting the trash bin.

you should of said FINE o by the way I saw those 12 flintstones in your cart first and you pushed in front of me.... so your logic all of those DVDS you have should be mine cause i saw them first or when she pushed if front of you should should of fell down and demanded she be charged with assult : )

sort of sounds like this fat #$#$# we had at best buy a few years back the day after thanksgiving.... woman weigh about 500 pounds and was just pushing her fat ass into the crowd knocking crap and people over.... She demanded that all of the cheap tvs were hers cause she saw them 2 days ago and the SOB worker gave her all 5 tvs (even though it said 1 per peson)) she said she had 4 other people standing outside......

went up and talked to a manager and got a better tv at the same price..when the fat SOB found that out she threw a fit and the told her to take her tvs and leave or they will call the cops and force her out....

Even if it was limit 2 per person the workers would be too lazy to enforce the rules

Whenever I look through the rack a bunch of people out of nowhere just walk right over to it and start skimping through. Were you ever in a store, looking at something (specifically stuff on clearance), and then all of a sudden some old crusty guy comes over and starts digging through it? I see guys like that all the time. They just walk in, look at stuff other people are looking at, and either leave, or grab multiple quantities of a single item. I don't know wether it's just people bargain hunting or a flipper.

Same thing happened to me a while back. It started with only myself and another older guy, then a woman with her baby comes by. By the time I left there were at least a dozen people looking all over the area, most people holding two or three titles.

And regarding the hoarder lady, I'm glad I've never had to deal with people like that.

yeah...but I'd imagine in Biglots case, they wouldn't care as long as they sell off all their stock-I'd imagine that they would rather have one hungry hoarder gobbling up all the stuff they put out rather than a conscientious group of bargain hunters who would think for the next guy and risk not selling off all they have

Exactly. I remember overhearing the manager at my local BL saying that she was glad they're selling, so they can put up other stock. The only time I ever see a limit is when a store might be selling at cost or a loss, or when there's some limit on store stock. Its genereally not Big Lots though.

While that is true you have to imagine how much the employees go through once these boxsets are gone. Especially when they allow just a select few to buy up everything right after they are put out. Trust me I'll guarantee you those boxsets will sell if they put a limit on how many people can buy. Not as fast as without a limit but they will sell. Plus by having a limit this allows for more people to buy which means more potential for repeat customers. In the end that is what should matter to Big Lots is using this to establish themselves as a place to shop at. Not a place where you go to for an advertised product only to find none there.

I know more than likely Big Lots won't care anyways. But at least I tried to say something to them about this issue. In the end its better to try and fail then to not try at all.

Your probably going to have to venture out of Flint. I went there like 2 weeks ago to get some of the $6 sets like Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. Found them there..tons..of course that was 2 weeks ago. Yesterday I called them to see if they had any $3 sets...and they said theyve been cleaned out. And I havent gotten a single $3 set there. I found most of mine near Warren. Thanks to Walrus for pointing it out to me. Theres like 3 or 4 stores in or around that area. I was at a BL in Long Beach, CA. At first it seemed as if there were no box sets there whatsoever, but after asking an employee, I was directed to the corner of the store where three whole rows of boxes were. I asked if there were any more that weren't on the shelves and was shown the boxes they had in storage by an extremely helpful employee. There were boxes full of Dukes discs and two boxes of various scattered sets. Amidst all the OC season 3s, Smallville Blu-Rays, and some Hanna Barbera sets was a lone copy of Wonder Woman Complete Series. But when I went to the checkout, one of the other employees who saw that I had a Wonder Woman set starting complaining to the helpful employee that she wanted that before. I immediately paid and left, but realized that we're not alone when it comes to Big Lots DVD hunting. The employees, who rightfully have first pick of the (Big) lot, are in the DVD huntin' game as well.

2 weeks ago, when I first saw the $6 sets, 1 of my 2 local BLs had Animaniacs V2, Pinky & The Brain V2, Dukes of Hazzard 1-5, Night Court, Lakers Dynasty Series, Joey, and about 9 zillion Scooby Doo specials. I picked up Animaniacs and the Lakers set (which went hand in hand with the Bulls set I had paid $30 for a few years before). Later on I checked my other BL and they had a few more series: Thundercats S1 V2, Dallas S7, Life Goes On S1, and some other junk. Didn't care to pay $6 for open Thundercats that's only 1/3 of a season.

Came back to the first BL on Wednesday and they had $3 sets out now: Murphy Brown S1, Lois & Clark S1 & S3, Batman: AS V4, Larry King Interviews, and maybe some HBO series I've never heard of. Picked up the Lois & Clark ones, and Batman V4. Friday, I went into the 2nd BL, and they had a bunch of cartoons: Popeye, Flintstones 1-4 (Season 1s were open), Top Cat, Josie and the Pussycats, Hot Wheels, 2 pks of Batman & Superman, Superfriends V2. On the non-animated side: Lois & Clark 1-3, Everwood, Tales from the Crypt, the old George Reeves Superman V1, and Tracy Ulman. I picked up Lois & Clark S2 and the Superfriends. However, even though I had grown up watching Superfriends, this season was lame with the Wonder Twins, only Batman and Robin, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman, and hardly any notable DC villains (sans Mxyl-imp-from the 5th dimension whom I never cared for.) I much prefer Challenge of the Superfriends with Green Lantern, Flash, Hawkman, etc. vs. the Legion of Doom.

OK, I went off on a geek tangent there. Came back late Sunday and the only Flintstones left were a few copies of Season 3, so I bought one. I was hoping to get Veronica Mars and Wacky Races , but never saw them. I can't really complain though, especially since a few weeks ago I was contemplating buying the Lois & Clark sets at Best Buy for their sale price of $20. :D

I can't believe no one has mentioned this. Some Big Lots may have Lois and Clark the Superman show season 1, 3, and 4, for $3 each, and Flintstones season 1-3 as well. Sadly I didn't realize that that was super rare otherwise I woulda bought out their stock.

Post 582:
I can't believe no one has mentioned this. Some Big Lots may have Lois and Clark the Superman show season 1, 3, and 4, for $3 each, and Flintstones season 1-3 as well. Sadly I didn't realize that that was super rare otherwise I woulda bought out their stock. Anyway, the store was a store up near Lake WInnepesaukah on the Tennessee Georgia line, on the georgia side.

It "has" been mentioned. Check the main post to see all the dvds reported. And they have been found at a lot of locations. the harder to find titles are Flintstones Season 6, Tales From the Crypt Seasons 1 and 6, Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, and the Looney Tunes Golden Collection 5 volume set.

If The Yogi Bear Hanna Barbera set ever appears at all at the Lots I'm probably gonna be goin' like 4-5 times a week hunting for that set. I can only hope in time it'll appear...
I wouldn't mind that Samurai Jack set either but seems as if that's nearly impossible to find in my area. Damn think Imma have a go to another store today jus thinking about it...

Okay, Deadwood and Gilmore Girls make sense, they've been out a long time. But True Blood? Already discounted to (I'm assuming) $6? No way. Does this guy have proof? (Not that you couldn't fake it easily.)

Well I saw only about half the DVDs that seem to be shipping to Big Lots.

I still have not seen the Blade, Batman, Samurai Jack, ect ect.

I had to laugh a little when the manager was bragging how her store receives inventory first.

When it comes to games and DVDs I think every single Big Lots gets their stuff before this store gets a shipment.

I will be on the lookout on Thursday for a shipment.

Just got back from Biglots and Scored the following:
Flintstones S1&2 (picked up 1 each, LEFT a good 6 of each)
Popeye Volume 1 1933-1938 (picked up 3, LEFT a good DOZEN or more!!!)
God the Devil & Bob (picked up 1, LEFT like 3, This was in the TALL cardboard DVD display)

Left (meaning didn't get ANY):
War at Home S1 (left a good Dozen)
Tracy Takes On S1 (left a good 6)
Bridezillas S2 (only saw 1)
Pebbles & BamBam Show (saw 2)

*Note: I pick up multiples because I know people who also want the same stuff I do, not because I'm a hoarder. Hence, why I left as many as I did.*

All the other previous $3 sets I reported about last week are GONE (no more Superman, Tales, anything!!!).

Neither have...hell, most of us. Does the phrase "YMMV" mean anything to you?

I can't think of any way to explain why True Blood would show up, especially given how popular it still is. Deadwood, though...

I've never been able to afford HBO, so if any of their good shows show up (like Deadwood, Carnivale, or...dare I hope for the Sopranos?), then I'm pretty much sold. We'll have to wait for some more confirmation first, though.

If The Yogi Bear Hanna Barbera set ever appears at all at the Lots I'm probably gonna be goin' like 4-5 times a week hunting for that set. I can only hope in time it'll appear...

Doing a quick search on Amazon, it looks like the Yogi Bear set isn't quite as old as the other Hanna Barbera sets we've seen, although there's only a year's difference in release dates. I was going to say I'd assume it sold better, too, but I'd also think that The Flintstones would outsell Yogi, and we saw all six of those sets in Big Lots.

Anyway, a Wave 2 of Hanna-Barbera stuff would be great. The Yogi set would be nice (especially since it includes Snagglepuss cartoons, too), as would The Jetsons or Hong Kong Phooey. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting, but you never know...:)

Bridezillas S2 (only saw 1)

I think that's a new one. I also think we can skip adding it to the list.

Fuck people like that, seriously, I may hoard some stuff sometime to resell but if someone in a store wants to purchase some for personal use they are ALWAYS more than welcome to take them. Profit is profit, but at the end of the day, if you're not a decent human being then what do you have?

THANK YOU for the awesome PDF, that makes things way easier on me!

Do they restock in the early morning usually on those days? Or does it happen gradually over the course of store hours? I don't mind lingering a bit but I have a lot of stores in my area so if I could store hop without worrying about being present at the "restock hour" that would be great. From what I could tell it looks like they do things a few hours early before the store opens but I just wanna make sure if anybody knows.

The PDF says "delivery days" and I'm guessing those deliveries would come later so maybe they would be doing the actual stocking a day after? I think I did spy a few people actively loading the shelves later in the day so maybe I'm wrong about that.

Thanks again for the deals and all the information, CAG ROCKS! :-)

The overall packaging of the Hanna Barbera sets is nice. The slipcovers are a little bit of a pain in the ass to get off, but I like the animation cel style of the covers, and it's nice that the packaging is consistent across all of the sets - even Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain have the same style and spine design, although they're anywhere from 20 to 40 years newer than the Hanna Barbera series.

I just opened the Huckleberry Hound set I picked up yesterday, and there was a little (reproduction, I'm assuming) animation cell included. :)

It's a shame that the second half of the series hasn't been released and might never be. It's not high art, but who doesn't like a little bit of Yogi Bear and Huckleberry Hound now and then? Heck, even the Pixie and Dixie cartoons have been funny so far. The set's also got "restored" episodes with the original intros and outros (essentially big ads for the show's sponsor, Kellogs), something that we probably won't see on TV ever again.

I've always been kind of a nerd when it comes to classic animation, but until now the only sets I've had were the Rocky and Bullwinkle box sets. This sale has been very good to me. :D

Now, I guess it's just time to wait and watch the prices drop on these and, hopefully, other sets so I can pick them up when I've got some extra money again. I didn't see the Dick Dastardly spinoff series (though I did get Wacky Races), and I don't think that one will be too hard to find for cheap on Amazon down the road.

Unless if your BL is really slow at putting the stuff out. Like mine is. In this case don't be there bright and early because all you'll get is "we're still working on it" while you see a woman take 10 minutes putting out ONE small box of candy.

The employees, who rightfully have first pick of the (Big) lot, are in the DVD huntin' game as well.Yes indeed.
I know one of the guys that works at the local Big Lots. He told me that they got x10-17 of the Looney Toons 1-5 sets in, but the employees (including him) all grabbed em.

When I go in to look today 'every' $3 set gone. And they had like 20 copies of Wacky Races..so it was obviously a hoarder.

I ask a clerk if they have more in the back and they tell me to check in tomorrow. And like 3 clerks told me that.........so they best have new stock in tomorrow.

Just got back from my local Big Lots and noticed something odd. A group of like 8 people huddled outside waiting for the store to open. Turns out Tuesdays are the day they put out the new ad items. Didnt know this since they put out the $3 sets on Sunday. Guess they goofed.

Kind of funny because when I went yesterday I reported they were cleaned out. Nope they must have just returned them to the back, because they had the exact same stock out today they had out Sunday.

No new titles for me, but I did pick up one of each set I saw there for trade purposes.

Pebbles and Bam-Bam series (I had orginially said Penelope Pitstop, but then went back through my purchase)
Wacky Races
Flintstones S4,5,6
Some 3 DVD set of trucks for my son
Batman AND Superman (2 Box sets) - $3
S1,2,3&4,5&6 of the Original Adventrues of Superman

No America's Game and no Looney Tunes, but I am EXTREMELY happy about my haul today...

Still need Flintstones S1,2 - but I can keep my eye out for that. My BL, like FlamedLiquid, seems to hold for the new Ad. The woman at the counter said "These are going to be in the new ad tomorrow."... Now I know :)

Oh - for those that are interested... some other sets had been reported, but not confirmed... I can confirm Everwood, Season 1 - my BL had it today for $3... I didn;t pick it up, because I'm not a fan, but there were 4 or 5 copies from the cases they put out today.

Has anybody at one point ever walked into a Big Lots right when it opens (9am) and found the DVD section to be stocked full? I mean like freshly stocked like their shipment just came in?

Yes, I did on Sunday. The store opened at 9AM and I was waiting outside. I could see the clerk putting stacks of DVDs on a spare counter. She was doing Flintstones as I watched. Five minutes later, the store opened and she was unloading two big boxes as I checked to see what she had. There was quite an assortment: Flintstones, Top Cat, Jonny Quest, Mission Hill, Veronica Mars S2, Murphy Brown S1, Penelope Pitstop, Tales From the Crypt S 2,3,4,5, Lois and Clark, Tracy Takes On, War at Home, Scooby Doo and a few others. Unfortunately, no Huckleberry Hound, which was what I really wanted. A few customers around but no one paid any attention to the DVDs.

I think it just depends on when the employees get around to stocking them. We're giving Big Lots far too much credit if we assume everything runs like clockwork around there.

According to the pdf, one of my local stores receives shipments on Monday. Two weeks ago, I went on Thursday and they had zero boxsets. I went back the very next day, and they suddenly had two displays full of new sets. This was around 3:00pm and the cashier said they had just been put out.

This same store failed to stock any new boxsets over the past weekend. They finally had something new yesterday, but it was only a dozen copies of the Popeye Volume One set.

Over here they have 2 places where the dvd's are. First is in the front where the registers and the candy are. Next place is way in the back where the furniture is. I think they do that so the flippers who never even heard of big lots up until this sale started won't clean them out.

The next batch appears to be HBO shows. Deadwood, Gilmore girls, and True Blood.

Well I went down to my local Big Lots and it looks just like as it did yesterday. According to the pdf file they're suppose to receive their shipment in today. Either the truck hasn't come by yet or they just haven't placed it out on the floor. I'll go back later tonight to check again for confirmation to see how accurate the pdf file can get.

The next batch appears to be HBO shows. Deadwood, Gilmore girls, and True Blood.Woah, is that true? I'm definitely going after True Blood. Good Show.

I went to mine today and they indeed had a new shipment like the PDF said. Not much of interest to me though. A ton of Flinstones and Popeye. And a pretty good amount of the old live action Superman show.
Luckily they had the Batman vol. 3 four disc set. Very happy to get that, but I was hoping for more.. maybe if I check throughout the week I'll get lucky. The shelf was pretty packed so there could be more in the back? Who knows.

Well, I checked the one nearest me daily for 3-4 days last week cause I saw no boxed sets whatsoever since I went in there 2-3 weeks ago, nor any time I went in (it's next to the gas station I go to and across the supermarket I shop at, so I went in 2 times a week anyways).

I was there Friday of last week, right at closing, to see if they were stocking anything yet. Nothing. I went there 2 hours after opening Saturday, and everything was out, and lots of stuff gone already. So yea, I'm sure there are Big Lots that can change from closing to opening, if that's your point.

I made a round trip from Deland-Orange City-Sanford-Longwood- Casselberry-Orlando (Edgewater Dr)-Apopka-Eustis. My Big Lots joyride lasted 3 hours & probably cost me about $7.00 in gas but I guess it was worth it. It was like an scavenger hunt to figure out where the dvds are in different stores. Was it BS because someone was able to obtain it and you dont?

No, I think it's BS because True Blood came out on DVD two and a half months ago (http://www.amazon.com/True-Blood-Complete-First-Season/dp/B001FB4W0W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1248901025&sr=8-1) and is one of HBO's most popular shows (http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2009/06/16/true-blood-ratings-fangstastic/). Most of the other sets we've seen have been MUCH older than that (case in point: the special offers in the Hanna Barbera sets expired in 2005), and given that True Blood is in Amazon's top twenty for DVD sales right now and probably has been since before it was released, I'm having trouble imagining a situation where just-released, popular box sets end up at outlet stores.

This wouldn't be the first time somebody has lied about a sale price before. I'm not saying that you are, but it wouldn't be too hard to move the price sticker by hand, or to do it in Photoshop.

Gentlemen, as per the language in the article...I think we may be buying stolen DVDs.

That quote says two million were supposed to be destroyed, 750,000 were sold, and 250,000 are unaccounted for. That leaves a million the article doesn't mention. Not sold but accounted for, maybe?

I guess this signals the end of the box set era at Big Lots. It's a damn shame - letting them go for cheap has got to be better than just destroying them. I know they've made me happy, and I'm not alone.

Warner Bros. lawsuit claims $10 million loss in brazen DVD theft

By Matthew Belloni

The home video arm of Warner Bros. has filed a $10 million lawsuit against a company the studio says agreed to destroy 2 million surplus DVDs but instead turned around and sold them on the cheap.

The complaint, filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleges that Agoura Hills-based IWMB, Inc. and its president, Cal Jones, were subcontracted to dispose of the excess Warner Home Video DVDs and Blu-Rays but intead hawked them to a third party who put them on the market at discount prices that significantly undercut legit retailers. At least 750,000 of the stolen units were sold and 250,000 remain unaccounted for, according to the lawsuit.

Studios periodically destroy excess DVD product, which consists of unsold discs returned from vendors and defective goods. Here, WHV says it entrusted the product to Cinram Distribution, which has a deal with Warners to handle excess inventory (and which, surprisingly, is not a defendant). Cinram subcontracted with IWMB, which is alleged to have shown Warners a "fraudulent certificate of destruction" before going out and selling the DVDs and Blu-Rays on its own.

"The resale of the Warner Product at prices that undercut the prevailing wholesale and retail prices resulted in a substantial loss of revenue to WHV, believed to exceed $10 million," the complaint says. WHV alleges fraud, conversion and violation of California's business code. It seeks punitive damages as well as an injunction against further sale of the stolen product.

Neither IWMB nor Jones could be reached for comment.

Warners is repped in the case by White O'Connor partners Andrew White and David Fink and associate Hajir Ardebili."

I don't think there's going to be a next batch now. If Big Lots wants to avoid any potential legal action, pulling the DVDs from the shelves and stopping any future shipments is in their best interest. They probably had no idea where the DVDs were intended to go, but they'll definitely know now.

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe that everything we've had reported (including Hanna-Barbera and the rumored HBO sets) was distributed on DVD by Warner Brothers. That doesn't leave much doubt in my mind that the article is referring to these DVDs and Big Lots, and that Big Lots is going to be in trouble if they don't start playing nice with Warner Brothers.

It sucks that Warner was deceived if this really is the case, however there should also be a big fuck you out to Warner Home Video just for the fact that they would rather pay someone to destroy the discs than run their own sale and give them to their customers at reasonable prices. Hell if they wanted a tax loss donate them to a library or something.

No kidding. Why not donate to charity? Failing that, this sale has made it very clear that if you send it to a place like Big Lots, you won't have merchandise to worry about much longer.

I understand why they do it this way - to avoid devaluing the stock that isn't destroyed - but there are much better ways to handle it.

Yep. Going by the response I got on my letter I sent to them on the "customer service" I got at my BL along with mentioning they need a limit of how many people are buying just got a canned....

Thank you for your feedback and we will send these comments to our Store Ops and Merch team

... yeah, I really don't expect YeOldmario to get any reply.

I just realized that I never did post the letter I sent. Here it is:

I would like to write on you about the recent experiences I have had with Big Lots. In particular my location and how your company has handed the recent cheap DVD box sets. I want to say outright that if anything this can be an learning experience for your company going into the future with these sales.

I want to say outright that my location is the only Big Lots I have been to. I don't know if things are run like this amongst your company or if its just this location. Honestly I really feel there needs to be changes done. But let me get into what happened.

My first visit occurred on July 16th which was well into the advertised $6 box set sale. When I arrived to the store I found very slim pickings of what was left. I expected that. When I asked at the register if any more was expected to arrive I got a very condescending reply back from the woman saying "well we're a closeout store you should of been here Sunday." I don't even know what I did to trigger her to be that rude but I simply decided to drop the subject. On the way out I spotted another employee who I found out that the next shipment might be on the Friday truck. Sadly due to other commitments I would be unable to be there.

My second visit came this last Friday July 24th. I called ahead of time at around Noon CST to find out in particular if at least the NFL America's Game set might of been on the truck. I don't know how your company unloads trucks or if you are given an manifest of what might be on said truck but at least by Noon I would expect the store might have an idea on this. Anyways I called and asked if there was any box sets on today's truck. I was told that they didn't know yet. Okay understandable. I decided to ask maybe if she would have known at least if the store ever got in the NFL set. I gave her a quick description of the set to which without a word she put me on hold. Nothing said to me at all about being put on hold. After a minute (of which I expected to hear a dial tone) a guy then answered the phone. I started to explain the box set when he cut me off and rudely said to me "NO WE NEVER GOT THAT IN." Wow. Very unprofessional.

So since I planned on being in the area I figured I would stop by the store. It was at exactly 2 PM CST when I arrived. By now I would have assumed something would be known about the box sets. I looked around and only saw a few sets that weren't there the previous Thursday. I get the rest of the items I came to the store to get and once again found myself at the check out with the same woman from the previous week running things.

I get up to the front and once again asked about the box sets. She tells me that they are still unloading now a second truck. That's all fine and dandy but from what I observed while going around the store the few employees I saw putting product on the floor were very slow. Regardless I asked her if she could find out if the folks unloading the truck have seen any that haven't been put out. At this point she tried to insist that I should walk back there and find out. That's a big no no since the last time I checked she's your employee and is earning that paycheck. I couldn't believe she was expecting me to do her job. She must of read my face at that point since I was in a state of shock so she finally spotted one of the folks working on the truck. Nope nothing. I paid for the stuff I had and left feeling uncared for as a customer.

I know in the end you are a close out store. That's fine and I can deal with product not being available. Its how I have been treated as a customer over my last two visits and one phone call that makes me question doing business with Big Lots. Don't get me wrong the values you have are great on many products. But when you are treated in a manner of disrespect no matter how good the deals can be you just don't want to go there after being walked on.

On a closing note I also would like to mention that as a company you really need to set a limit as to how many copies of a box set per customer can purchase. I have seen many people complaining online about a few people who would stuff their cart full right after the store gets restocked. These people are turning around and reselling these box sets for profit through various online sites such as Amazon and the like. Its making things very unfair for everyone else when a few people can buy up everything. Why even bother putting things in the ad when you allow this?

Anyways thank you for your time in this manner. I really hope if anything this can be a learning lesson for you as a company.

WOW...so the old saying is true about "If it sounds too good to be true"...

And this would explain a few odd things about this sale. Why the unwrapped Flintstones DVDs? Why is that Powerpuff Girls DVD set included as it was just released in January 2009 for crying out loud? And the prices? Waaaay too cheap. I don't think any store has ever sold so many different box sets so cheaply ever! We got one hell of a deal and that should have raised red flags. I honestly did not think too much about it as I get anime DVDs there nearly every other month for $3.00 each and I thought that is what they felt all cartoons was worth, about $3.00 a pop.

Recall how the first batch was $6.00 and the second batch $3.00? I thought that was really odd as I would have gladly bought the same DVDs for $6.00 a pop. I'd wager the big wigs at Big Lots knew they had super hot merchandise and they had to get rid of it fast before a lawsuit caught up with them forcing them to give it back. Well at least all those Joeys will be going to where they belong, in a landfill next to those Atari 2600 ET carts. One day Mother Earth will punish us for burying such toxic waste. LOL!

Now I honestly don't know if I should return the extra Superfriends DVD set that I bought. I rather give it to a friend than know it'll be trashed in a landfill. What a horrible thing to do to any non-Joey DVD set. LOL

Yeah - I had a few sets that were set to go back... Now I guess I'll keep them and trade them. No sense in turning them in only to have them go to a landfill.

If anyone sees Flintstones Seasons 1 and 2, I'd love to either trade or paypal for them. I doubt if we'll see any other boxes get unloaded.

And if ANYONE sees an extra America's Game 40 Disc set, I have some very tempting trade bait (PPG, anyone? ;) )

Well, that was fun while it lasted.

I'm still hitting up the BigLots near me to see if they still have stuff up on the shelfs in the morning though (was told that on Monday about when to come back by one of the CS reps).

Well, that kind've sucks. I just wanted to find a complete Wonder Woman set, but my local store(s) never received any seasons of the show.

If anyone has one they were planning on returning, I can't stand to think of Lynda Carter being resigned to a trash heap. I'm afraid I don't have anything to trade, but I'd be willing to Paypal for it.

We did nothing wrong and neither did Big Lots. They were deceived about the merchandise by IWMB. Yeah, it sucks that we'll never see an event like this again, and it turned out they weren't legitmately sold to BL, but no reason for us to feel guilty or hate Big Lots for it.

I have Lois and Clark S1 and S3 and would gladly trade both for any Gargoyle season you can find. And if you can find more than one, I would absolutely buy them from you. That is an amazing find.

EDIT: In fact I had already PMd you regarding the S1 and S3. I am going back tomorrow on the bright and will check for additional Lois and Clarks for you.

I went today and finally found a Thundercats boxset! I picked up some sets for trade to hook up some cags that were unable to find certain sets. I have these for trade. Let me know within the next couple days if you want to do a trade since if there is no interest I am returning them to the store.

Definitely just random speculation. I definitely don't think suddenly all these sets are gonna be recalled and taken off the shelves. Maybe over time but not instantly unless Big Lots is named as a culprit of this officially and can be pinned down with precise evidence that claims it as the "victim" of this ordeal.

You realize this makes no sense, even when you know the recall was because of suspected E. coli?

Heading back over to big lots around noon, thats when my store's employees start unpacking.
