I remember watching random episodes and it wasnt too bad. Might need to get myself a S1, need to find a FYE that hasnt closed down in my area....

Speaking of Veronica Mars, do I have to watch S1 before I start watching my $3 S2 set?

It's very helpful to watch Season 1, but you can get most of the story without it

I'd say watch Season 1 first. It develops the characters well.

Another reason to watch the first season, the show is absolutely amazing, so it's well worth the cost of the first season.

Definitely just random speculation. I definitely don't think suddenly all these sets are gonna be recalled and taken off the shelves. Maybe over time but not instantly unless Big Lots is named as a culprit of this officially and can be pinned down with precise evidence that claims it as the "victim" of this ordeal.

Warner Brother's isn't stupid, so eventually they will figure out where the DVD's were sold, and will tell them to cease and desist.

At this point I doubt Warner is going to do that. The vast majority of the said box sets have already sold. What very little that is left I just can't see Warner even wanting to bother to have those "Joey" sets that never sold suddenly sent back to them.

Stopped by my location today. Tons of War At Home Season 1 for $3 and the Looney Toons Movie Collection for $10... and somehow they managed to sell all but one copy of Joey Season One. Otherwise no new stock.

the looney tunes collection, is that the 1-5 one? if so did you pick it up and is it up for grabs?

The movies collection is $12 on Amazon, $10 at Big Lots, so not really worth it.

I wouldn't bother watching S2 it's pretty horrible. There are plot lines that go nowhere left and right, and the ending isn't even really based on the rest of the season. As good as S1 was, there's a reason it didn't fully make it through S3 before being cancelled...

Sadly, I was at wal-mart and saw that same collection for 13$ too. 2-3$ difference just isn't much, compared to the other sets :/

As far as Veronica Mars is concerned, I really enjoyed all three seasons. You dont HAVE to watch season 1 to really understand season 2, because it's a self-contained story... but I would strongly recommend watching S1 first, otherwise you're flying blind as to Logan's situation as well as to some of the characters and story references.

Season 2 was not the reason for its cancellation, which held steady at a little over 2 million viewers / episode and continued to hold steady. The show, in general, didn't have numbers like UPN/CW's flagship garbage reality TV shows Next Top Model, Pussycat Dolls, etc... *cough*Firefly*cough* Viewer ratings determine our TV schedule and silly people watch the dumbest shows :)

Sounds like I'll more than likely watch Joey before Veronica Mars.

I still have absolutely no idea how the Nielson Ratings are anywhere near accurate. I remember having my family chosen for it when I was about 10. We kept the TV on most of the day/evening that week. It's such an alien presence, that it can't NOT affect your viewing habits when you know that watching TPIR in the afternoon can keep Bob Barker on for yet another year.

Demolition Man
07-31-2009, 04:05 PM
Except TPIR is pretty much an hour long infomercial disguised as a game show. Take away all the money the show makes off of advertising giving away hot products and I'll guarantee you that it wouldn't have lasted as long as it has.

Nothing worthwhile in the four North Austin stores, unless you like the OC or the Dukes of Hazard.

If anyone in the Austin area sees the Babylon 5 movie set, lemme know. I need it to complete my series set :)

The reason they would want to destroy them rather than sell them at a discounted rate is that they don't want to devalue the merchandise when it is still being sold at full price at normal retailers, along with the fact that they can right off the full cost of the DVDs that were destroyed as a business expense, something they could not do if th ey were sold.

I can understand that, but I still see it as a terrible waste.

I saw some weird Bandai Anime sets today in a way out of the way Big Lots for $10 - but now I can't remember what they were. One had a bust of a woman included with the DVD. Then there were 2 with 2 plush figured included in the box. I didn't know what the heck they were... So I left them there.

The one with the 2 plush might have been Angel Tales IIRC, its a somewhat old shipment back when Big Lots was flowing with anime. Those were the days.

I snagged the last copy of Wacky Races (complete series) for $3 today. It was hidden deep behind a bunch of Superman series.

That's it for the cartoons. All that's left is Everwood, Joey, Night court and westwood.

Nothing good that was new at my local one. There was some new public domain boxsets of WWII or some crap that I did not even bother to carefully look at, but that was it. They still had about 30 WB sets so there was no recall at my store, but they are the usual ones that people are finding which no one wants, Joey, OC, Night Court, Larry King, West Wing, Tracy Ullman etc and a couple that was obviously returns that would get snapped up soon. I did not visit every other day to check as I had done last week, but I am pretty sure they did not restock. Was there a new flyer out yesterday for BL or does theirs come out every two weeks?

$10 anime sets? Can you go back and see what ones? I'm definitely interested!

Sorry - it was in Martinsburg, WV - and I only got the one chance to go to the store. We left to come back home tonight.

The store in Winchester, VA still had some Flintstones, Josie and the Pussycats and a couple of Cousteau sets. I think there were a few Popeyes, as well.

Yeah, as I mentioned in an earlier post for the past week and a half I haven't seen either of my 3 local Big Lots restock any new sets; I've been driving to each one almost daily to see if they do. So I guess thats the case; at least for me.

Mine put out a BIG shipment last Tuesday in prep for the Wednesday ad. I haven't seen anything since. The Wednesday shipment didn't have much in it. Checking this AM to see if they have any stock out out for the weekend from their small Friday shipment...

The one with the bust of a woman is Scrapped Princess v. 1. It contains a full Pacifica figure, which just needs to be put together. It's about 12 inches tall, and not bad for the price. Some Big Lots also still have volume 6 of Scrapped Princess with 2 smaller figures, Angel Tales v. 1 with artbox and 2 plushies, Galaxy Angel v. 1 with artbox and 5 small figures, and some random anime dvds.

Anyway, I picked up Appleseed : Ex Machina and the Memories 3 ova pack. ^_^

I stopped by my local BL every day since last Saturday - save for yesterday - and they haven't restocked with the sets once. They got a truck on Thursday and I stopped by at 9'ish this morning and there was the same ol' stuff from Thursday afternoon leftover, with some new movies sprinkled in. I think it's the end of the road at that particular store - which was the most plentiful in my area, even though I picked up only a handful of titles I wanted. Ah well, the hunt was good while it lasted...

Not the seasons, but the collection DVD's. The local store had a 4-pack (Vol 1-4) for $6 - I'm not entirely sure, but I think those episodes make up most if not all of season 1.

A new BL had it's Grand Opening in north Omaha yesterday - checked it out this morning and was rewarded with the best selection I have seen at the 4 stores I have access to.

Looked like they held the stuff we have been seeing for 2 or 3 weeks and put it all out at once for this grand opening

No $10 sets that I could see...yet?

Only picked up what I was missing or friends had asked for:

Wonder Woman Complete Collection
Tales from the Crypt S3, S5, S6
Roots 30th Anniversary
Batman Animated Series S2 (vol 2)
Johnny Quest (original) S1
Scooby Doo and Dynomutt
Dastardly & Muttley
Smallville blu-ray S7
Flintstones S1, S2, S3, S4, S5
Thundercats S2 V2 big box with lenticular cover
Flag v1, v2, v3, v4
Bunch of other anime singles from Eureka 7 and a few other series

There was a ton more - all those NFL sets, OC, Six Feet Under, Thundercats with the velvet slipcovers, other Hanna Barbera boxes..it was actually a little overwhelming.

Added to what I found at the other BL over the last couple of weeks, this BL goldmine has been huge.

After seeing the Warner lawsuit article (http://www.thresq.com/2009/07/warner-bros-dvd-theft-lawsuit.html (http://www.thresq.com/2009/07/warner...t-lawsuit.html)), I figured I would make one more run to BL. So, went to my local Big Lots and saw a few things there today that I didn't see last week. Picked up:

Superman - Animated Series vol. 1 - $3
Popeye Vol. 1 - $3
Thundercats - Season 1, vol. 2 (says disc 9 and 10 on the back - so, not sure how the numbering system was on those)
Looney Tunes vol. 2 - $6
SuperBowl XXX (sorry don't know my roman numerals..hehe..but it's the 90's red box)
Flinstones vol. 2
Pebbles and Bam Bam complete
Scooby Doo vol. 3
Animaniacs vol 1
Memories
and a Hannah Barbera title my friend wanted...

My main goal was to find the Batman animated series, Superfriends (which I wish I picked up the first time), Veronica Mars S2, Wonder Woman - Complete and try my luck again for Thundercats. Also, if there were more Blu-rays that may have come in... But spent around $51. Did see Joey's and OC's still there...and of course Dukes of Hazard, West Wing and many of "The War at Home".

Never said it was dead, just wanted to mention that nothing new has been showing up. These were not special sale item prices, those are the prices that they are selling them with the stickers they attached.

kroger discussions should be moved to the kroger thread, not in the big lots thread.

There's nothing wrong with notifying others in one thread about other stores having this type of deal, Right?
I mean, he didn't say it to change to topic of Big Lots, He said it to let others who were looking without luck at Big Lots that "Hey, heard you might get lucky if you look at Rite Aid"...
As for thinking we were changing the topic to "Kroger" and constantly gonna talk about them, that would be a dead topic for us to supposedly "try" to change it to anyways; cause like we said in our posts there aren't any of those stores around us. Thus, nothing to talk about in that Kroger thread you insist we move to and there's nothing else to say to continue talking about it in this thread.

In other words, Thanks for letting us know of a alternate thread but pointless for us to move to it...

Back to Big Lots, went by my local one today...no new restocks (if there had been earlier this week/last weekend then they'd been cleaned out) and what was there was nothing of interest to me...Still had plenty of Roots. Hoping I catch a new re-stock soon though still hoping for that Samurai Jack that will probably never show up for me in my area.

I went to my Big Lots today and they had way more stuff than before. A bunch of LA Lakers Championship history, various WW2 box set, Night Court, Dukes of Hazard s5 and 6, History of Rock and Roll, Nightmares and Dreamscapes (Stephen King shorts...?), Roots: The Next Generation, Tracy Takes On, and West Wing s2. There were also a few Eureka Seven DVDs. I think they were vols 5, 7, and 8.

Anyway, if someone sees War at Home, Veronica Mars, Drew Carey, or Samurai Jack and don't know what to do with them... ;)

I guess I came into this deal kind of late. I really wish I hadn't been so busy these past few weeks, but oh well, what can I do. You win some and you lose some. There'll be a next time for sure, not to mention that I already own quite a few sets from this deal already. I went to a couple Big Lots by me, and at least i found Tracy Takes On Season 1. I was very happy with that find, plus it was only $3 and not the $6 listed in this OP's post.

Ok went in today to a different Big Lots store in my area, I'm glad I did...
I finally found Volume 2 of both Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. So i purchased 2 of each. They had a bunch of Tracy Takes on (Like 2 rows), Scooby Doo box sets, Dukes of Hazzard S5 and S6, Joey's and like half a row of Animaniacs V2 and like 5 Pinkys V2 left. They told me that store gets Dvd shipments in on Tuesdays and Have them on the floor Thursdays. Surprisingly enough This deal wasn't completely dead for me yet.

You got me worried so I opened up mine too. My disks are fine, the only problem is that the glue on the disk tabs didnt hold, so my first two tab cases are loose while the 3rd one is still glued to it. Might just reglue them myself I guess, its a very odd way to store them though...

Looks to be no ad this week. The e-mail I got this week pushed clearance stuff which you can look up on BigLots.com already. To answer already before anyone asks.... no, the
box sets that we are all looking for are NOT part of the clearance.

I think that is part of the reason WB wanted this stuff destroyed as I heard many rattling sets of DVDs when I was making the rounds last month.

I've encountered more than my fair share of rattling DVDs in my day that retail stores will sell regardless.

It wouldn't surprise me. I had a few loose discs in the sets I've opened (Flintstones Season 5, Animaniacs Volume 1, TMNT Season 5 from Krogers, and maybe a few others), and I'm pretty sure a few of the sets I left on shelves had loose discs. Fortunately, "loose" didn't mean damaged, at least in this case.

I also noticed a few other minor imperfections (like the slip covers not lining up with the art underneath on the Hanna Barbera sets), but nothing so bad that it would've doomed the sets to $3 oblivion by most standards.

Demolition Man is right, though - I've gotten a few DVD sets and games that had loose discs from other places, which were sold at full price.

Just wondering, were your disk case "tabs" also loose, or is everything glued correctly? I wonder how this originally worked since it seems like it would be hard to get disks out, but they clearly had glue on them at one point.

The plastic cases were cracked, and yeah, the glue was coming off. I think most of the sets were "defective." They probably had slight imperfections.

At this point, anything you'll find is going to be the sets people don't give a rat's ass about. In Michigan, that seems to be Joey and Dukes of Hazzard.

I never did have much luck with Kroger - only one of the stores I went to got the DVDs, and the only thing I left with was a TMNT box set.

Yeah, me too! I hit 3 stores in metro Boston last week and only found one Superfriends set for $6 (great gag gift, someone's getting it for Christmas!) and nothing else except stacks and stacks of seasons 5 and 6 of the Dukes of Hazzard. Would have loved more of those HB cartoon sets for cheap.

I did find all four volumes of the anime FLAG for $3 each, so I was jazzed about that. $12 for a 13-episode series is nice.

If it was in the "main" forum, we'd have the kind of clusterfuck mess they have on sites like Fat Wallet that makes it impossible to find anything. CAG's a special interest site and this isn't the main interest, so it makes sense to partition it off. Besides, nothing's stopping you from looking at this forum on occasion.

TMNT box set? was that the 1987 series?

Yep. Seasons 4 and 5 box sets have been reported.

For both Kroger and Big Lots, though, you guys are probably SOL at this point. We're about a month past the prime of this sale and, given the news reports that claimed these DVDs were "stolen" (supposed to be destroyed, but the company decided to resell them on the cheap instead) it's pretty clear that there won't be a restock. Unless you have a strong interest in Joey or the seasons of Dukes of Hazzard where they recast all of the characters, it's not worth bothering.
