It's really not that hard once you get into it :)

Wow, I didn't know that was possible. I don't have a VGA input on my plasma, but I do have component and HDMI; would it be possible to rig my DC to output at 480p via component or HDMI cable?

I'd recommend against getting one like that. I believe it is the same one that I got and it is good for playing the games on VGA tv or monitor BUT if you have a game that is VGA compatible you won't be able to play it.

You want to get ones that have S-video and composite outputs too so you can switch back and forth.

I haven't done it in a few years but I remember that most of the games that don't have vga mode can be tricked into it by like doing a disc swap method or something when the disc in spinning up. (I forget it's been a while). One example of a game is Evolution, but doing this is bad for the motor.

Other games, like Bangai-O won't work (unless you make your own VGA box and customize it, and even then it seems that the game doens't run perfectly) at all. So make sure to get one that has composite/s-video outputs too.

I was lucky and found a VGA box that let me switch between it and S-Video/Composite at a GoodWill, back before they went insane with prices, for about $3.

EDIT: I would recommend not using it on a Large TV. It's great on a smaller monitor, but on a large TV it gets really jagged and the less quality of S-Video/Composite really looks better when scaled up.

EDIT 2: But thats just my opinion
