Obviously you're a "quantity over quality" kind of guy. A handful of good movies, and a truckload of almost unforgivable titles.

And you're in the wrong forum.

My local library has a decent (smallish but quality) collection that I can borrow from and my local Hollywood Video rents DVDs for $1 . . . when I can view them at that price, why buy them? I own about 20 dvds. Why so few?

My cash goes for GAMES!

Sorry I didn't expect you guys to start flaming me and not even looking at my collection. I thought the guys at Gamefaqs were bad too........

Oh and that is Christina Ricci in my avatar. One pic is from Buffalo '66 while the other was from a photoshoot.

And what category would Donnie Darko go under, if not Horror?

I put thrillers with my horror movies. Hence The Glass House and Godsend.

I buy what I like.

Also, I'm hoping to limprove my anime collection. but the only other series I really want are:

I noticed you have some fullscreen stuff on there. Bah. I'm insulted.

Overall, a large amount, but, I wouldn't say the best stuff, because I'd rather have 5 great movies than 200 bad ones not worth a damn. I loved your TV on DVD collection, makes me jealous.

DVD porn? Ever hear of the internet?

6/10, mainly because of all your great TV boxsets, but, that isn't even half of your collection, oh, and The X-Files DVD's are nice, but I'm an X-Phile, so, nevermind my comment there, but, Dumb and Dumberer sucks, how could you have that?

Oh, and DVD Profiler is much better than that other site in my opinion, not only is that word difficult to spell in compromising situations, but, the layout is pretty basic and is hard to actually look through ALL your titles, I ended up skipping half the collection because I got sick of seeing all three billion Wishmaster movies.

Danimal
09-30-2004, 08:26 AM
I'll give it a 7.5 out of 10. I think people are being a bit too hard on your movie collection. Yeah, not everything in there is top shelf, but there are a lot of very good movies in there. I like a lot of your TV on DVD stuff, and you went from a 7 to a 7.5 just by virtue of owning all the Futurama sets. If you plan on picking up the first season of Arrested Development, adjust the score again to 8.0. :)

johnnyoski
09-30-2004, 12:44 PM
Actually there are quite a few good titles in there, you just have to wade past some crap.
6/10

If you dropped at least 25% of those titles I'd give it a higher score. I mean some of those movies are so bad that it really drags down the overall score.

50 First Dates? Big Daddy? Mr. Deeds? Pirates of the Caribbean?

While a lot of it is crap, there are some decent ones here.

Props for having Anything Else, I think I'm the only one that enjoyed that movie. And Eternal Sunshine. Though I'm not giving you the credit you deserve for ES, since you're a movie whore.

And a ton of crappy Anime.

I see. Yah, I can see what you mean I guess. Most of you probbally don't like the following:

The Hot Chick
Dumb And Dumberer
Joe Dirt
Dickie Roberts
Along Came Polly
Wishmaster/Wishmaster 2
Wishmaster 3
Wishmaster 4
Wrong Turn
Cabin Fever

just to name a few. But I really enjoyed alot of yhose movies. Sure Wishmaster is cheesy, but I still found the premise to be pretty cooll.

Anyways thanks for rating it.

I'll have to check out that dvdprofiler site.

In all honesty, you have a lot of great movies.

While I'm not a fan of horror for the most part, don't know anything about anime, and couldn't care less about wrestling, I would rate the rest of your movies:

10-02-2004, 01:02 PM
OK.

If I was you I'd gt rid of many movies.

Here it goes:

All the wwf (wwe)
All the south park

Many TV Shows: (many of them are only worth watch once)

Lost World
Garfield and friends
In living Color
joe schmo show
king of the hill
simpsons
married with children
punkd
reno
saturday night live (how many times do you have to watch a comedy until you realize it's not funny anymore)
saved by the bell
sealab
crank yankers
ninja turtles season 1
some of your spiderman dvd's (your choice)
some of your softcore dvd's (your choice)
wishmaster 3,4 wasn't good
Try to only keep the horror movies you like the most.
you have a decent selection in drama but again only keep what you like the most. (don't try to collect lots of drama just because you might be too short in your collection)
In comedy there are some not worth having like:

scary movie 3
anything else
baseketball
dumb and dummerer
big lebrowski
bedazzeld, ect...

some adam sandler aren't good movies.

best of adam sandler
going over borad
eight crazy nights

In action you have a decent collection but could be improved with more movies.

in Japanise animation you either want to impress some one or you really love your anime. It's impressive nonetheless but it you don't enjoy some of it get rid of it.

On a personal note: I also used to have 500+ dvd's and got rid of 200+ dvd's becasue I realize that many movies were making my collection boring and often saw my dvd shelf and found nothing to watch. Take your time to select movies that are just great to enjoy and add some life to your selection.

Have you really watched all the x-files seasons?

take your time.

As for anime here's my recommendations:

- Now and Then, Here and There
- Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (FLCL - like stuff but paroding modern pop culture - mostly japanese)
- Full Metal Panic (Giant Mech stuff a la Gundam/Evangelion)
- Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu (sequel to FMP; not yet released)
- Full Metal Alchemist (Unrelated to FMP; magical stuff involving alchemy; not yet released)
- Madlax (Noir - like; not yet released)
- Naruto (Ninja anime; not yet released) <<< --- best recommendation
- Happy Lesson (Love Hina type anime)
- Samurai Deeper Kyo (rorouni kenshin type anime)
- Samurai Champloo (Cowboy Bebopish anime but w/ samurais and hip hop instead of spaceships and jazz)

The ones that aren't released can be found on bittorrent. There's more but that should tide you over for a while

Naruto is one of the top rated anime out in japan right now. It's been goin' on for about 2 yrs (which is quite rare in terms of anime series). As for samurai champloo, it should be coming out soon as it's already got a US distributor: Geneon. Hopefully, they'll do a faithful translation.

Uh, it's a wellknown cult classic.

Anyway, having a Scorsese section and not having the best Scorsese film is ridiculous (Raging Bull, hello?).

The Polanski and Kubrick nods are the only films worth owning on that list.

FlamedLiquid
10-03-2004, 08:04 PM
I've watched all except like 4. Which I just recently bought. And theres only a few movies that I own that I hate:

Going Overboard (own it cause I like Adam Sandler, no matter how terrible it is)
Swindle (have no clue why I own this. It's crap)
Last House On The Left (I read good things about it, but was dissapointed in the result.)
Anything Else (great actors, but gets lagging. I just love Christina Ricci. :) )

And Freedy Got Fingered is one of my favorite comedys. You gotta have a sick and twisted sense of humor. Hence, thats why I own 2 Spike And Mike dvds.

Also, I have never seen Raging Bull, and I would own it, if it wasn't Out Of Print. I plan on buying the 2nd Scorsese box set though which has:

New York, New York
Raging Bull
Boxcar Bertha
and some other movie (sorry forgot what it was)

I know what you are saying but all that stuff is only worth watching one time or twice and that's it. After a while you won't find it funny anymore or interesting.

He is obviously bored of many titles he has that's why he can't find anything to watch anymore. He is tired of the dvd's I listed and you and he might not notice it right now but you will later on.

Look at what rating is everyone giving!

I don't see anyone posting a list of what needs to be leaving and what needs to stay except for me.

You didn't see me listing that he needed to get rid of the X-Files Seasons or his animation so if I didn't list some of the stuff is because is worth keeping.

As collections go, I've seen better; then again, I've also seen worse. ;) Fact is, for the DVD collectors among us, we all have titles that were either regrettable purchases or unfortunate gifts, and very few of us have libraries that would validate our AFI membership applications.

With that said, there are some questionable choices that even I can't defend:

* Barb Wire
* Joe Dirt
* The Hot Chick
* The Joe Schmo Show
* The Real Cancun

Softcore and anime is a matter of personal taste. While I do admit to watching pro wrestling, I would never buy any WWE videos. I have nothing against Adam Sandler, but most of his comedies weren't particularly good; his dramatic work (such as "Punch Drunk Love") was better.

You should also consider smaller independent films* to diversify your collection (* such as those shown at the Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals). Criterions do add some validation to your library (except "Armageddon"). I didn't miss "Elephant" in your collection (an exceptional film).

You have too many movies in full screen - that's a *BIG* no-no. You'll need to pay closer attention to your purchases to ensure that such mistakes aren't repeated in the future (for gifts, exchange them at a nearby retailer).

If I had to assign an overall score (I omitted the softcore and anime from the evaluation), I think a 5.5/10 would be more than fair.

Also, i only own like 10 FS dvds. Least I think its only 10. If not fewer.

Die Another Day
Spider-Man
The Fellowship Of The Ring
Anger Management

Not gonna look through the rest.......

Oh and..ahem..yah those movies you mentioned:

The Hot Chick (Best Rob Schnieder movie, imo, and i dunno just found it funny)

The Real Cancun (ummmmm.....was cheap.....and wet t-shirts!!!) lol(yah the movie isn't that great though. Iv'e been thinking of getting rid of it.)

Barb Wire (Pamela Anderson is hot. That is all)

Joe Dirt (Don't mess with the mullet. I'm surprised you didn't list Dickie Roberts, since you listed this.)

Joe Schmo (Yah, I enjoyed watching this on tv, and never got to see all the episodes. Plus its uncensored. It's the best reality tv show imo)

So, only ones i would consider getting rid of are Joe Dirt, and The Real Cancun.

There's no shortage of places online that stock Criterions, including auction sites like eBay. Best Buy carries a few; Wal-Mart and Circuit City, for the most part, doesn't (I think "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Chasing Amy" were the only exceptions). And yes, you do have to pay for quality.

Barb Wire (Pamela Anderson is hot. That is all)

If implants and herpes are your thing, I'll just step out of your way. ;)

Joe Dirt (Don't mess with the mullet. I'm surprised you didn't list Dickie Roberts, since you listed this.)

I must have missed it when I was scanning through the items; belongs in the same pile as "Joe Dirt". The only half-decent David Spade movie in recent memory was "Black Sheep", but only because Chris Farley carried the film for the most part.

I've gotta disagree on the Hot Chick. I thought that was one of Rob Schneider's funniest movies. It's not the greatest in plots but that's a given considering it's about high school vapidity (is that even a word?).

500 is indeed a lot...I've got about 130 titles on my DVDProfiler database, but some of those are multi-disk tv or anime sets.
I have quit buying dvd's for quite some time; the last ones I bought were a couple of TV/anime series I got on sale/with coupons/etc, a couple of the most recent batch of Disney Treasures, and a few titles from the DDD 20% sale [and I've already sold/traded two of them.]
With netflix, videogames, and a huge unwatched dvd library, I'm a lot more conservative with my dvdbuying dollar.
The only things on the horizon I am interested in getting is the Star Wars trilogy, Rock and Rule whever it comes out, and Return of the King EE.

Haven't looked at your collection in detail, I see a bunch of B-horror movies which can be fun but debatable as to whether they're worth owning. That question of course comes to the individual [again, Netflix has saved me lots of money, both on movies and TV on dvd--I rent the things I don't think I'll ever watch again, or aren't worth 'collecting'.]

Criterion has got this huge rep, and they do treat a movie with respect, but to me, the question is 'Do I like this movie?' The only Criterion I bought was Brazil. There's not another movie that's got a Criterion that I'm really interested in watching, much less buying for 40+$.

Regarding Full Metal Panic that someone suggested: I'm watching this now, and enjoying it. It's a WHOLE LOT lighter than Evangelion. NGE seemed too 'deep' for me, I know I was missing a lot of the symbolism and such. And by disk 8, I was fastforwarding it just to finish it. I'm only on disk 1 of FMP, so there's no guarantee I won't do the same with it, but so far the tone of the program is very different. Made me laugh a few times, where NGE never did.

Anyone else want to post your collection? Is anyone else out there have a decently sized DVD collection? I know the focus here is games, but I would expect some crossover between the communities. I can post mine as well, just for comparison/ideas sake.

Cool. I'm not really into Mech animes as much as others like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Hellsing.

jaykrue
10-06-2004, 01:42 PM
Full Metal Panic is a weird crossover between high school hijinks and big frickin' robots kickin' each others' butts. It does get a bit serious at the end but not as deep and symbolic as NGE. As a followup, I would suggest picking up Full Metal Panic: Fomuffu (if it gets released in the US), it's more high school hijinks than big frickin' robots but it does involve a giant cuddly teddy bear that's carrying more artillery than even Rambo could hold and speaks only one word: Fomuffu. It'll make sense once you see it

a giant cuddly teddy bear that's carrying more artillery than even Rambo could hold

sold!
Even cuter than teddy bears, are kick-ass teddy bears!

So far I like the 'high school hijinks' aspect of FMP; it hasn't gotten too juvenile yet. And it's quite an interesting play on the 'fish out of water' concept.

Gundam Wing and Transformers.

If you don't mind a touch of mech action along w/ gratiutious displays of skin (but no actual nudity) aka fan service along w/ a LOT of gunfire check out Bakuretsu Tenshi (or as it will probably be called when it comes to the US: Exploding Angel or Burst Angel)

Criterion has got this huge rep, and they do treat a movie with respect, but to me, the question is 'Do I like this movie?' The only Criterion I bought was Brazil. There's not another movie that's got a Criterion that I'm really interested in watching, much less buying for 40+$.
Especially when some of their DVDs are as bare as a Warner Brothers release. I think Criterion is extremely overrated, though some classic films wouldn't see the light of day in Region 1 otherwise. Rather monopolising it all.

Yep. The Brazil release was full of extras, so it wasn't a really bad buy [if you like the film]. But some of their releases are 30 bucks just because they're 'Criterion', and they dont' really add much to the release.
