The Wii has a vast library, and this is something we can all agree on. It has an insane amount of games out for it already, and even more that are coming out. Many of these are original titles, and this is both a good and bad thing. Not all of these titles are quality, some of them are the dreaded shovelware we’ve grown to both love and hate. I happen to enjoy lots of the shovelware on the system, as it provides cheap thrills to me. But I’m pleased to say that The Munchables, which came out in late May of this year, is most definitely NOT shovelware in the slightest. It’s a very fun, original platforming game, and I implore each and every one of you to check this fire out.

You play as one of two characters, a male or female Munchable. I chose Chompy, the male you find residing on the cover in the glorious red. There are 8 worlds in the game, with 3 stages in each world. 2 regular stages, and then a boss stage. In each stage, you go around eating everything you see. You move with the joystick on the Nunchuck, and you move the Wiimote up to jump. You tap A to eat, and B to attack. You just keep eating all the Aliens and some of the environment to gain levels. The higher level you are, the faster you move, bigger you get, and more you can eat. Some enemies, Aliens is what the game calls them, are much bigger than you and have their level above their head. You will not be able to eat them in their current form. You’ll need to break them down and eat up the pieces. For example, you are level 32 but your enemy is level 50. You will need to attack him, and knock him into 4 level 30’s, and then eat them individually. Doing this usually gets you leveled up fast. Sometimes, the enemy will be dozens of levels above you, so after breaking him into lots of pieces, you will need to break THOSE pieces into even more pieces, and eat them very fast, before they come back together. You also better dodge their attacks or risk getting hit. Once hit, you shrink and must shake the Wiimote to get bigger again. But don’t worry, you usually won’t die once you are shrunk, just make sure to shake fast. In fact, I only died twice while playing the entire game.

In each level, you usually have a simple goal. Eat all of these things, or make it to the end of the level. Very simple. You never get lost, the game is designed in such a way that you will always know what you are doing. The level design is wonderful, and the colors are very vibrant and colorful. A very pleasing and pretty game to look at. In each level, there are Acorns you can collect for bonus prizes, which are just accessories you can add to your Munchable to customize him or her to your liking. Although it may seem aggravating at first that you are collecting these things, the levels are designed so well that for the most part, you really won’t have any problem finding all of them. And if you do, once you beat the game there is an Acorn Radar that gets unlocked, so no worries there.

The environments are diverse, from a regular outside level, to a nice undersea world, a haunted house, a spaceship, and even the clouds in the sky. The levels are very entertaining to say the least. The music is great. You won’t get annoyed by any of it. In fact, the boss battle theme is just plain bad ass. It makes you feel so cool as you battle these huge monsters, such as Broco-Lee, (that’s his name), a big chocolate bar, and other various big food items. The boss theme is so good. Its got this sound in it of a guy going OH OH OH and it just makes you ready to take on the world. You’ll love it, trust me.

Earlier I mentioned that you level up as you play. Well, your levels don’t stay the same. As you move on to a new world, you will start at level 1 again, but that’s not a bad thing, because in no time you will be eating up all the aliens and getting back into the hundreds like you were before. The game also has a Mirror Mode to play through once you finish it. It took me around 6 hours to beat the game, but I did not collect every Acorn. Going back and collecting them, as well as Mirror Mode, adds a lot of replay value to this. Its already dropped down to $20, and at that price its unbeatable. The game is one of my favorites on the Wii, and I suggest you all pick it up.
