View Full Version : New to PS3--just wanting some advice

WiiNet

I'll be getting one of the all but certain PS3 slims and wanted to get some early advice from veteran PS3ers. I have a Wii, I use it to play motion intensive games (Tiger 10, Tennis, Boom Blox, etc) but I've pretty much ignored the PS3 because I didn't want to convince myself to drop $500 on the console. But I've been hankering for some old-school controller-style gameplay for a while.

Sooo--what games are good (I know there are reviews, but sometimes launch games that are rated high don't hold up well).

There are a bunch of FPS, which are worth picking up? I don't need all of them, just one or two good ones.

How widespread is DLC? Is it normally worth buying? What games have the best?

Any other advice?

Hope this isn't treading too familiar of ground, I appreciate any advice.

EDIT: Ooh, one more. Can I browse the PSN store via my Mac? I can't seem to find a way to do it...

This list was helpful for me in deciding which games to buy:

http://www.metacritic.com/games/ps3/scores/

You can't browse the store on a computer, unfortunately.

FPS: Call of Duty 4, Bioshock
DLC: Stardust HD, PixelJunk Monsters, Super Puzzle Fighter
Other Games: Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Valkyria Chronicles, Metal Gear Solid 4

Lots of new upcoming games that seem great too, but I just mentioned the classics.

If you're going to look at a review aggregator I suggest http://www.gamerankings.com

Also add Killzone 2 to the list of FPS.. Loved it.

Did not like Super Puzzle Fighter... just not for me. Was not a huge fan of Ratchet and Clank... stopped about 3/4 of the way through it.. I did not pay previous versions, so there is no history there for me.. on its own, for me, it was just ok.

Uncharted and Valkyria, and MGS4 are great.

I actually liked Lost planet, but ti scored pretty mediocre

Spend the first week trying out demos (if bandwidth permits).
Join gameshare groups (cut most DLC to 1/5 the price).

You can see some psn stuff here http://www.us.playstation.com/PSN/Store but I don't think you can access the whole store. The only dlc that I might consider must haves are mgs4 level pack for littlebigplanet and the valkyria chronicles dlc. If you don't have a pc or 360 then I would suggest the orange box. It's not as good as the pc or 360 version but it's still a fantastic game and a steal at 20 bucks. I would also recomend looking into gamesharing so you can get alot of stuff on the psn store for cheap. Here's more info on that http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174965

Id start with cod:waw for a Fps or cod4 you could also go with Kz2, I personally like cod waw better due to the dlc, nazi zombies etc. Uncharted is a must play its a really good game as well as Mgs4. Other than that it all depends on what you really like for games but Id also recommend Pop as you can get it fairly cheap and its a decent game. Rpgs are lacking as of right now but alot of people like Valkyria me personally it was ok but Im more into traditional rpgs, action/rpgs than strategy or I probably would have liked it more. You can Dl ff7, wildarms, suikoden off the psn which are all good if you like old school rpgs. Infamous is fun so is Prototype but both get tedious after awhile in my opinion.

Burnout Paradise, and Motorstorm Pacific Rift are my fav racing games on the system.

FPS - I would definitely recommend Killzone 2, Resistance 2, and Call of Duty 4, although I'd try and get COD4 as cheap as possible since the sequel is coming out Nov. 10th.

Fighting games: Blazblue and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD remix.

Other notables - Warhawk, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Rachet and Clank, and Uncharted.

These are a great set of started games, there's something in every genre. RPGs are there, but not in great number.

Is Resistance worth picking up compared to the others? It's cheap and then I could hold off for the new CoD.

Resistance 2 is fun because of the online co-op. Had a blast with that, and the way Insomniac developed it really requires teamwork and competent play on harder difficulties.

And another vote for Valkyria Chronicles if you like games with story and character development that has some anime cliques.

Ive had all 3 systems since their launches or just a month or 2 after launch.

First off, make sure you get a hdmi cable for your tv and confirm the ps3 is running in HD. 2nd, i would start off with Resistance 1, its cheap and fun. It also has a cool story and some great weapons. I would skip any COD till MW2 comes out and just get that.

I would also suggest getting Uncharted immediately. Then get demos for most of the other game you are interested in. Off of the PSN, i highly suggest Shatter, Pixeljunk Monsters and Eden, Fat Princess, SSF2T HD Remix, MvC2 (out next week). Seriously, there is so much content available, you will have a hard time even getting through most of it in the first few months.

Thats just a short list i recommend.

Do pretty much all of the games have demos? They're so foreign to the Wii I sometimes forget they exist.

As far as FPS games go get Battlefield Bad Company. Best multiplayer FPS imo, and also probably the cheapest at $20. Get Burnout Paradise as well, another great game, also $20.

Get the biggest HDD you possibly can- I don't care how much memory you'll think you need- PS3 eats gigs faster than any of the three, so you'll probably end up wanting more space if you opt for a smaller HDD.

If you like platformers, you can't go wrong with Little Big Planet- I think I've put more time into that game than any of the current gen games I own. Aside from that, I guess I have to bring up Valkyria Chronicles too- I haven't actually really played it yet, but I'm getting verbally battered by my fiance and my boss to hurry up and do so (I do own it, I just haven't gotten to it yet.)

Most games do have demos- I don't think they ALL do, but there's a great deal of them (and certainly more than the Wii!)

Almost all the Exclusives are worth trying, if not buying

My personal favorites are Uncharted, Infamous, Killzone 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4

There are also TONS of 360/PS3 games worth getting, ill try to recommend some based on genre

FPS - Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty: World at War, Killzone 2 (Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Turok if you can find then cheap)
Racing - Burnout Paradise, Gran Turismo 5, Midnight Club: L.A.
Fighting - Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix and Marvel vs Capcom 2 are both worth getting on PSN. If you're a Tekken fan, I'd wait for 6 to come out.
Sandbox - Grand Theft Auto 4 and Saints Row 2 are both great and fun games. Infamous can also be put here.
Third Person Shooter - Uncharted is a must own for any PS3 fans, Army of Two is also fun, especially if you play with a friend.
RPG - (I'm gonna be honest, PS3 sucks for RPG's, Mostly due to Square NOT RELEASING ANYTHING ON IT!!, one of my main uses of my 360 is to play RPG's) Oblivian and Fallout 3 are definitely worth trying, but if you're more into JRPG's, I dont know anything to reccomend.....

The PS3 has a lot of great games, so here are my favorites sorted be genera.

RPG - Disgaea 3, Valkyria Chronicles
FPS - Resistance 1 and 2
Third person shooter - Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted
Racing - Burnout: Paradise, Wipeout HD
Fighting - BlazBlue
DL games - Flower, Noby Noby Boy, Fat Princess

As far as RPGs go the PS3 is pretty weak but Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles are both excellent games.

RPG wise don't forget Eternal Sonata if you don't have a 360. Demon Souls has some good buzz and comes out later this year, along with Dragon Age: Origins. It's probable there will be a PS3 port of Tales of Vesperia at some point in the future as well (so far confirmed only for Japan.)

first things first... upgrade your hard drive to 320 or 500 gb. upgrading now will save you some hassle down the road because you don't have much to back up.

so you got a 60/40/80/20/whatever g hd and think you won't fill it up? i highly doubt it.

I say no to any COD game. If you have a PS3, you should enjoy the full potential of it. Which is why you should get Killzone 2 instead when looking for a shooter. COD4 is not even in HD. MGS4 is a no brainer as well. Saints Row 2 > GTA4. Also, as for the HDD, i say upgrade like someone else suggested. I have an 80gb with 5mb left.

The PSN store is not bad if you want to get some DLC. But most of the time DLC like The lost and the Damned (GTA4 Add on) gets added first on the Xbox Marketplace and we have to wait for that to drop on the PSN....so i guess thats the only negative i can think off.

That metacritic list is great. You can't go wrong with any of the top 50. Hell, I've played alot of the top 100 and had fun. Some of my faves so far (in order of preference):

Uncharted
Ratchet & Clank Future
LittleBigPlanet
Virtua Fighter 5
Killzone 2
Resistance 1 & 2
Devil May Cry 4
Prince of Persia
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Motorstorm
NBA Street Homecourt
Metal Gear Solid 4 (Must have high tolerance for cutscenes!)

PSN games:
Super Street Fighter II HD Remix
Calling All Cars!
Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection
flOw
Blast Factor

I know. I need to download some more but I just can't get into DD games.

Multi-platform games I loved on 360 but are just as good (if not better or have more content) on PS3:

Call of Duty 4
Burnout Paradise
Bioshock
Fight Night Round 3
Eternal Sonata
Lost Planet
Orange Box (hear it's still kind of buggy but not sure)

Enjoy the PS3, man!

Ok. I'm revising my list.
1. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
2. MGS4 (took me 60 hrs but I watched the cut scenes)
3. inFamous (Great game, playing through twice is not boring, easy trophies)
4. Fallout 3 (One of my favorite games of all time, over 50 hours if you want it to be)
5. Burnout Paradise
6. Killzone 2 (Had a lot of fun playing the campaign the first time I got it, multiplayer was a dissapointment)
7. MLB 09 the Show (great if you like baseball)

it's the same, it just depends on the game. Fat Princess was hard to get in a game in the first week and so was battlefield 1943 on xbox live. Anything snk has put out on xbla has been unplayable and so was gunstar heroes on psn.

OK....I'm going to break from the mold of 'zomg get MGS4 and all of these other PS3 EXCLUSIVE games' and recommend a few that're on both the PS3 and 360...

First Person Shooters: Bioshock(that's the ONLY FPS you'll need) it's also the cheapest to find right now. It's really cheap @ Sears for PS3 if you can find a copy
Action/Adventure/sandbox: Saint's Row 2(steer clear of GTA IV, unless you like 'realistic' driving and a rather mundane game that's lost much of it's sarcastic humor from past iterations)
Platformer: Little Big Planet(while it IS a PS3 exclusive, it's the ONLY platformer you'll need for a looooong while, considering how many user made levels are available to play through
PSN games: Mortal Kombat II(original arcade version before babalities, friendships), Noby Noby Boy(weird Japanese game, 'nuff said on that), Spyro The Dragon(can't beat a PS1 classic)

If you want to amass a game collection for the PS3 as quickly as possible, keep an eye on the Sears, Kmart and Target clearance threads, as you can find some pretty good deals from all three stores. Also be sure to keep an eye for great sales like the Hollywood Video $5 game sale that's going on now and the recent Blockbuster Buy One Get One deal.

The PS3 has some awesome disk and PSN games, In no particular order my favorites so far are: Resistance 2, Burnout Paradise, Spider-man: web of shadows, Prince of Persia, Overlord, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD, 1942: Joint Strike, Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty.

I think that GOW III will be as good as the rest of the series so you might want to get it. I recommend downloading as many demo's as possible and trying them out, it's the only reason I bought the force unleashed which another pretty good game if you're a Star Wars fan.

Uncharted
Resistance 2
inFamous

Beg to differ on the Killzone 2 controls. Guerilla added a "high-precision mode" in a patch a few months ago. Its now on by-default for new players and I actually like it better. In fact I was doing quite alright before it.

Just got the slim today--is it me or is the PSN store fairly clunky to navigate? And is there any way to clear the downloads list? I set up a bunch of demos I want to eventually download, but once I do so they're still in the list and available for download again. It's a bit annoying.

The PSN store is the worst thing about PSN IMO. Its setup is horrible and "clunky" is too light of a word to describe it. I think they've re-designed it for FW 3.0 though, so we'll see really soon (9/1).

For the OP:

Download TVersity and set up your PS3 as a media server, especially if you're on a wireless network. It's pretty sweet being able to stream the videos and music thats on your PC. I use the media server functionality more than anything else on the PS3, including gaming. If you're lost on how to do it, just google "PS3 TVersity setup" and you'll find a bunch of tutorials. It takes 5 minutes to do it once the program is installed.

DLC is eh in comparison with XBLA. Super Stardust, Echochrome, and Fat Princess are pretty good PSN exclusives though. Don't expect something like Shadow Complex though. Wipeout HD is fantastic too. As for add-ons and stuff, it completely depends on what you're playing.

I tend to stick to PS3 exclusives when I game on it as I lean towards 360 for multiplatform. I hated Killzone 2, and didn't find the Resistance games much cop either.

Must haves: Uncharted (one of the best games this generation on any system), Valkyria Chronicles (if you like the style of game, download the demo first), The Show, Metal Gear, Wipeout HD, Echochrome, and Infamous.

Don't bother with Playstation Home. It's a bunch of crap right now and its integration has been poor IMO. Its supposedly goign to get better, but I hate it. You may want to give it a look though, its idea is interesting at least.

Uncharted is the best game on the console and one of the best games this gen. Don't pass that up. On the other hand MGS4 is the must overblown title on the PS3. I can't believe the way people defend that game. I LOVED the previous games but 4 was nowhere near as exciting to play and was actually pretty dull IMO. I wouldn't advise a purchase unless you can get it very cheap.

FPS - Outside of Call of Duty series (i.e. 4, World at War, and most likely Modern Warefare 2), all of the other FPS are just average.

I have really only enjoyed two games so far (talking exclusives since I play multi-platformers on Xbox360). Uncharted is a must buy. It is easily the best game on the PS3 and it has been out for almost two years. The other game I really liked was LittleBigPlanet, a platformer.

Infamous is pretty good if you like Grand Theft Auto style games... I am really not a fan of these open area games.

I am looking forward to picking up Uncharted 2 this October.

Update: I've downloaded a bunch of demos. Haven't taken the plunge to actually buy a PSN game yet. I picked up Force Unleashed at Hollywood Video for $15. I played about half of it on Wii, but the PS3 version is much better. Just ordered LBP off eBay from a local seller and should have it soon.

Can someone give me a quick primer on guitar games? Like what guitar controller (do any exist without USB dongles?) to buy and anything that works differently than Wii? I've read about exporting songs from older discs for the new ones. I'm very confused by everything. I don't plan on playing them much, so I was thinking about getting maybe Rock Band 2 and then downloading just a few extras songs for my liking.

Do a google search for "Rockband GH compatibility chart" That should explain the instrument stuff.

All of the Rockband add on packs have an import feature that can be used only once on one PSN ID. It allows you to rip all of the songs off of the disc and play them via regular Rockband or RB2. If you are interested in this feature- don't buy them used. You can also pay 5 bucks to import all of your songs from the RB1 disc onto your hard drive for use with RB2.

The general trend is to buy Rockband2, buy the import key off the PSN, and then rent/borrow RB1 to get all the tracks.

I believe that since Sony themselves didn't make any of the guitars, they can't access the system directly, so every guitar you find will use a dongle. I have two for the PS3, the one that came with Guitar Hero 3 (the Les Paul) and the one that came with Rock Band 2. I can say 110% that the one that came with Rock Band 2 is better IMO... feels better, buttons press better. But definately check that link for the compatibility chart - it'll help you make a very informed purchase.

Getting Rock Band 2 and renting a copy of RB1 is the way to go. Get the $5 export key from PSN, and then you can access twice the songs through RB2. Pretty slick - I will never go back to Guitar Hero until they decide to let their songs all work under one title.

Don't mean to thread jack, But I also have a question about the guitar peripherals. Is there any way to get the PS2 versions of GH to play on PS3? I've read a year or so ago that it's possible but difficult with the USB controller converters (buttons don't fully work, etc) but is it possible now? I'd like a way to play GH1, GH2, and 80s on the PS3, as well as be able to play both the RB and GH series and the future games. Is there even a guitar out there that would be able to accomplish this?

You can stream stuff through Windows Media Player, so you don't need to install anything extra. That's how I have mine setup.

The PS3 by default does not allow a lot of things. PS3 Media Server bypasses them and allows them to work. It is the ultimate software for media streaming on the PS3. WMP is as basic as it gets, if the ps3 supports it by default, it'll work, otherwise no chance. Its a joke in comparison.

I'm surprised with the RPG recommendations no one mentioned the launch title RPG that came out first for PS3: Folklore. It is still my favorite Action RPG to date. It has a unique kind of celtic-goth? atmosphere, two distinct main characters with a wide variety of downloadable wardrobes and storylines, and a customizable combo-based battle system. And it also uses the motion sensor of the Sixaxis/Dual Shock 3 controller to a degree (You need to tilt the controller up to capture minions that increase your fighting abilities) so Wii players should find a small degree of familiarity with it. I really hope a sequel or spiritual successor comes out one day.

Anyway the trailer's worth a thousand words. You should be able to see the trailers for Folklore from your Mac from the sites that come up when you google "playstation.com folklore" You can browse the descriptions of download content from the Playstation Store from the internet also, but it doesn't tell you the file size, or cost of the add-ons. It only shows you those details when you browse the store from the PS3.

If it's exclusives you're after, gotta get Uncharted, it's the must own game for PS3.

Well, until Uncharted 2 comes out.
