10-01-2004, 05:13 PM
We all win. CAG has saved me way more than $200, so it'd be just a nice little random bonus. Everyone here, if using the website even a bit, should've saved more than $200. *End obligatory, yet warranted, praise*

Has the winner been picked? I figure Cheapy will either update the first post of that thread or maybe put something on the front page when he has an official winner.

I really don't understand you guys at all. I would assume that these periodic contests are given to draw new people to this site, rather than to reward regulars for having stuck around for a long time. And *certainly* not to reward high post counts (what a horrible thought.) Clearly, a lot of you guys believe the exact opposite...that if only these "pesky 1-post newbies" to the site were excluded, it'd be a great contest. *sigh* If you insist on finding some advantage for long-term members, consider it the chance to have partaken in all of the contests held, instead of just the most recent one, which is all the "undeserving noobs" have had a shot at.
...and for God's sake stop bitching about it.

I agree... when people post things like "I think you should have to have more than (insert number here) posts to win!!!" it just comes off as selfish and misses the entire point of the contest. It's to celebrate the growth of the community, and without those "newbs" there wouldn't even be a contest to begin with. So let's just celebrate the growth and success of this board and be happy that Cheapy and Defender even extended this gift to someone period. Congrats to whoever wins... and congrats to the CAG community at large for becoming such a large and successful gathering place.

And also i dont expect to win this, there are about 1225 entries. That means you have a 1/1225 chance of winning. I think most people would be happy if it were them, but I figure as long as it isn't someone who only joined just to enter the contest and then never contributes ever again that it would still be fair.
Contests that draw people out of thier shells are better than contests that only attract bottom feeding hoarders that buy 100 copies of cheap games for ebaying and never try to help the community.

When I do find them it seems someone has already posted it. My life does not revolve around being the first to find a deal. I am very appreciative to CheapyD and correct me if i'm wrong, but don't I contribute something to him when I buy something via a CAG link?....and I do use the links. I didn't sign up for the drawing, God forbid a "newb" won that.....and if I had won, I would have donated that back to CheapyD anyway. He's already saved me alot despite some of you children. You dont have to post a deal to be a productive member of the community, just helpful. In all my 1000 some odd posts I've posted maybe 2 deals and I think one of them was already posted in another thread, but I participate in discussions, post impressions on games to help others with their purcahse choices and share information about things if someone has a question I think I can answer.
Hell if everyone posted a single deal we'd all have 20,000 games to choose from, which sounds great but is also just slightly ridiculous. Not everyone is going to find a deal just be greatful to those that can and help your fellow CAGs when it's humanly possible.

i think what a lot of the people are saying about the 1 post people is that they registered to win, posted 1 time and probably wont ever post again (unless it is to gloat). it wouldn't bother me if a newbie won as long as they were active members or if someone was here a while just lurking. but the brand new people that only joined for the contest is what bothers me about them having a chance at it. oh well, it is cheapyd's choice and we all have to deal with that no matter how much we may not like it.

I don't think anybody is saying that they are a better person they just feel they have contributed more to this site.
Like for example say there was a contest for volunteer people to paint a mansion and every volunteer got to put his name in the hat once to win the mansion regardless of how long he worked. If you spent 10 hours painting that bitch and then some guy came in and worked for 15 minutes during the last hour and ended up winning that place if your the guy who did ten hours wouldn't you be pissed?

If the lurkers are so appreciative of this website, why don't they try to do things for it? Like Alpha said, you don't have to post deals to contribute to this site. You can however help others out by giving them help with games or advice on what to get. It doesn't seem that anyone with 1 post could have possibly done these kinds of things. They may buy through the links, which is an important part of CAG, but they don't contribute ANYTHIG ELSE. That's why we don't like the lurkers.
However, you have made it clear, that you somehow respect the guys who post (I think) by not entering in the contest like so many others who haven't contributed. In turn, you get respect for that. :)

Post count means jack to me. Most people here either bumps their thread to get a post up or they spam in other threads just to get their post count up.

Cheapy is picking the winner based on what they said about CAG, isn't he? I doubt he'd pick a noob with 1 post.

I understand that people that post alot feel they deserve some recognition but.....this contest can be seen in two ways. One, it can be seen as a reward to people that post alot or two, as a chance to attract people to the site. Obvioulsy, CheapyD chose to include everyone. I am not speaking selfishly as I chose to pass on the drawing. Please stop whinning and give people a chance. If this contest did attract alot of newbies, just hope that this community grows. I think most gamers that enter this site will stay. Even if a small percentage of those become active members, everone wins, especially CheapyD.

I think its a random drawing. Pull the name out of a hat type of thing. I think the CAG thing was just for filler so it wouldn't be filled with: "Post+1" or "Bump" or crap like that.

Na, its random, would take years to read all of those posts.
I dont have many posts cause I only post when necessary, BTW I have been here aslong as the others have too.
On another note, I think who ever has halo 2 GIFS inthere SIG and as their AVATAR should win...

Myself I don't care who wins. THe contest may have brought new people to the site that had never heard of, after signing up, liked the site and will turn into regular contributors. That 200 would be a cheap deal on advertising.
But then we have elitist people who sit and worry about something as trivial as FREAKING POST COUNTS!! As if anyone but you cares about how many posts you have. I don't anyone sits and thinks man I wish I had as many posts as user x. I post when I have a good deal, a brag, or looking to make some trades. If it was up to me we wouldn't even keep track of post counts, then we wouldn't have this discussion, Oh wait yes we would people would just talk about when they joined next. Geez just move on, it is a contest like 1000's of others on the net. This one just happens to be on a site we frequent.
This isn't directed at any one person (though a couple came close), its just its a way of Cheapy D saying thanks, and getting a buttload of new people to see the site, plus it works for vgd as well.

No, the "war" is a result of people thinking that they are owed something for being here longer, having more posts, etc. etc. It's really quite sad that it's gotten this ugly. I say CheapyD should just call it off and let Defender keep his money.

I have nothing wrong with someone who has been here a while and posts rarely to win. What would not be okay with me is somebody who just joined to enter win, or someone who always lurks and NEVER posts.
i can see how we all want someone with 100's of posts to win because then it's like a friend won and not a stranger.

Co-sign that... people seem to be forgeting the purpose of the contest is to celebrate the growth of CAG and be all inclusive. CheapyD is smart, he knew that he'd get people coming here and signing up just because of this contest. I meant that's part of the purpose of having it on the front page and making a big deal of it.
Whoever compared it to painting a house has a valid point... if that scenario applied in any way to this contest. It doesn't. If it was gauging who has contributed the most, embodies the spirit of CAG or helped make CAG what it is today... then you'd have a point. But the purpose of this contest was to celebrate a milestone for this site and give away a token of appreciation by extending a gift to anyone who cared to post what CAG meant to them. This was meant to be a celebration, not an arguement. It's random for a reason... let's just accept that and put this all behind us.

Not especially, but if it stops all the fallout, then I'm all for it. Like I said, this site has saved me WAY more than $200, so it would be of no real consequence. The contest is in HONOR of reaching 20,000, not to mention totally random.

Let me ask everyone a question.
In all those contests by EVERY company (Pepsi, Fox, MGM, Snickers, etc) do they HONESTLY give a shit if you bought one of their products, saw their movie once, etc etc etc etc, and then never did so again?
No, of course not.
It's a CONTEST. If some lucky 1-post guy wins it, then oh well, that is why it is a CONTEST.
Sit around and bitch all you want. You have the exact same possibility of winning as they do (except for the asses who login under multiple names, but those cheaters can burn in hell).
Snickers doesn't care if I buy one Snickers, win 10K, and then never buy another Snickers. I had the same chance as any other person to buy that specific peice of candy and win the contest.
That's the cold hard truth. There are assholes in real life that will screw with systems for their own personal gain. Game hoarders come to mine.
Just take it with a grain of salt...

Um...I agree to u to a certain extent but then another part of me points out a blatent mistake.
Of course pepsi cares if you buy there products...thats why they have the damn contests in the first place. Do u think that the head honcho who designed the contest thought...I have a great idea....lets give away money for no good reason!!!!! To those companies its all about profit.
Strell
10-03-2004, 09:50 PM
But they won't go "OMFG YOU BOUGHT ONE PEPSI AND WON WHILE THE GUY WHO NAMED HIS BABY DIDN'T WIN."
There is a difference between profit and winning a CONTEST and we're only dealing with one of those things right NOW.
spyhunterk19
10-03-2004, 09:50 PM
They do hope that you buy more of there product....its there crazy scheme to mabye....i dont know..turn a profit.
Strell
10-03-2004, 09:56 PM
You are missing the point entirely.
A contest is designed to sell more products. This contest, probably, is ALSO designed to bring more people here. More people here = more profit for Cheapy.
Now then, as far as the profit metaphor goes, Snickers WILL NOT TAKE MY PRIZE AWAY if I bought only one Snickers, the same thing you poeple are bitching about. THAT'S THE POINT I AM MAKING.
So deal with it.

why are you guys soooooo eger to find out the winner, do you really think there is a chance you will win. I think cheapy should keep it from us as long as possible to tell you the truth. The longer he keeps it from us the more those "one time posters" will be back. I just thought of something couldnt people create another sn just to enter the contest. This would be a reason to look out for those one time posters though.
