CAG iPhone App is Coming - Give us your name ideas!

Super Programmer John has been hard at work on a CAG iPhone App. The initial functionality will be primarily as a game price search engine, but there will be collection, wishlist and other features in the future.

Keeping in the CAG spirit, it will be free.

We need your name ideas!

I'm assuming the App Store is not going to allow us to call it "Cheap Ass Gamer", which would be my first choice. Any ideas?

By all means give me the link because when I browse CAG from my Blackberry browser, all I get is the full website which takes a while to load due to all the content on the front page.

Edit: I found it. You have to change forum layout to CAG Mobile. But that also sucks because if I change the layout on my BB to CAG Mobile, it also changes the version on the computer to mobile as well. We just need like a mobile web address like m.cheapassgamer.com, that should point you to the mobile version of CAG. I've seen many websites set up like this. Either way the mobile version of CAG could use an 2.0 version upgrade as well.

I have to vote for CheapAppGamer as well, the only really catchy title here.

Looking at what is stated as the feature list, I'm not so sure that I would use the app. Looking up game prices is going to be fantastic for many people, but I tend to look at the deals forum to see how people are discussing the latest deals, such as "Hey, Barbie super adventures is $5 at gamestop!" "Oh, hey, you should actually look into it, it's great!" To this extent, will there be a mobile version of the site to read the forums, or is the concentration of resources going into the app version of the site? (And to all current mobile users, does CAG show well on smartphones?)

Also, do you know if John will be working on apps for the blackberry/Android systems?

IMO, CheapAppGamer sounds like an AppSniper type of application, geared towards finding cheap iPhone apps.

CAG, iCag (but I agree with the i prefix being played out), CheapAssGamer, Cheap Gamer, Cheapy Cheapington.

I'm not a huge fan of CAG to Go, or CAG Mobile, because they sound like mobile website names, rather than a full blown app name.

Not sure that barcode idea is worth while, at least not at my local walmart/bestbuy/futureshop (Canada). Mainly because anything that is worth money at these retail stores are locked behind 2 inch glass cabinets. It might be better for used games at trading shops like Blockbusters/EBGames.

I've heard it is much speedier lately, but I think that cheapy would tell us either way and that most likely it just hasn't been worked on due to the latest CAG.com overhaul or whatever.

Nope, we haven't submitted the app yet - it needs some debugging and a couple of features need some polish, but it got buried beneath a slew of marketplace and site changes. With marketplace changes going up as we speak, the iPhone app will be next on the agenda to finish up.

Cheapy said he probably couldn't integrate it with Amazon due to the terms of their API service. He said he wouldn't talk about it again unless this got fixed, but that it most likely is impossible to fix unless Amazon suddenly becomes willing to change their terms.

Sucks for Amazon. Just means other retailers will be able to get the attention of the many mobile CAGs out there. I'm going to go ahead and take a wild guess and say the majority of CAGs either own an iPhone or iTouch.

John and Cheapy: If it makes you feel any better, you're not the first to be screwed by Amazon's refusal to allow folks to use the iPhone API. Another favorite app of mine, Pocketpedia, Bruji's iPhone app that syncs with their great Bookpedia, CDpedia, DVDpedia, Gamepedia programs (http://www.bruji.com/), was similarly borked. Without the API, they had to pull the app from the store. Those of us who got it before that can still use it, but its functionality has been severely hampered.

We're in the process of a lot of marketplace tweaks at the moment, as soon as that's over and done with I'll take a look at where we stand - if I think I can get it polished and released relatively quickly, maybe it'll be next on the list. Right now, the status of the app features are as follows:

Marketplace integration: needs updating to work with some of the new features we've added to the marketplace on CAG.
Price tracker: done
Game info/search: done
Forums: done (in web browsing mode at least, ideally I'd put together a fully fledged forum browsing client but that would take a long time for relatively little benefit)

Not sure how you are planning to integrate the forums into the CAG app, but I recently discovered the AVS Forum iPhone app (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/avsforum/id371309999?mt=8) and, IMO, it does an AMAZING job of porting that site (http://www.avsforum.com/) -- which is nothing more than a massive vBulletin forum -- to the iPhone. Might be worth a look for ideas.
