Features
From the makers of Mass Effect™, Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic™, and Baldur's Gate™ comes Dragon Age: Origins, an epic tale of violence, lust, and betrayal. The survival of humanity rests in the hands of those chosen by fate. You are a Grey Warden, one of the last of an ancient order of guardians who have defended the lands throughout the centuries. Betrayed by a trusted general in a critical battle, you must hunt down the traitor and bring him to justice. As you fight your way towards the final confrontation with an evil nemesis, you will face monstrous foes and engage in epic quests to unite the disparate peoples of a world at war. A romance with a seductive shapeshifter may hold the key to victory, or she may be a dangerous diversion from the heart of your mission. To be a leader, you must make ruthless decisions and be willing to sacrifice your friends and loved ones for the greater good of mankind.
Bone-crushing, visceral combat: Battle against massive and terrifying creatures.
Full character customization: Sculpt your hero in your own image or fantasy.
Complex moral choices: There are no easy choices.
A stunning world to explore: This is BioWare's deepest universe to date with over 80 hours of gameplay and more than double the size and scope of Mass Effect.

We are pleased to announce the contentsof the Dragon Age: Origins Collector's Edition.
The Collector’s Edition is a premium package available in limited quantities featuring exclusive Dragon Age: Origins collectibles including a unique steel case, a cloth map of the world of Dragon Age, a Making-of documentary DVD, a digital version of the Dragon Age: Origins soundtrack, game trailers, wallpapers, strategy tips and a concept art video, plus three exclusive downloadable items that will provide special advantages to the player.
The Collector’s Edition is available for pre-order today at www.eastore.ea.com (http://www.eastore.ea.com/) for an MSRP of $74.99 (console) and $64.99 (PC) in North America. Check with your local retailers for pricing.
As an added bonus, Dragon Age: Origins (both original and Collector’s Edition) includes two special pieces of downloadable content: The Stone Prisoner, as well as a suit of Dragon Age themed armor that can be used in Dragon Age: Origins as well as in the upcoming BioWare Shooter RPG, Mass Effect™ 2 on all available platforms.
With The Stone Prisoner download pack, players will have access to Shale, the mighty stone golem who can become one of the most powerful party members in the game, and comes with its own personal back-story and unique quests for the player to discover. The Stone Prisoner will also include new environments, items and hours of additional gameplay, further deepening the epic Dragon Age experience. The Stone Prisoner is available to original purchasers of new copies of Dragon Age: Origins at no additional cost. The Stone Prisoner can also be purchased separately for $15.
In addition, players who purchase a new copy of Dragon Age: Origins (original or Collector’s Edition) will receive a code to download the Blood Dragon Armor, an exclusive set of themed armor that will give the player additional protection in combat. This armor will be available for use in both Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2.
All gamers who pre-order Dragon Age: Origins will receive the Memory Band, an in-game item that can be equipped to add +1% to all gained Experience Points and which adds one bonus point that players can use to boost their character’s skill set. In addition to the Memory Band, several leading retailers are also offering a bonus Dragon Age: Origins item for a limited time. Players should check with their favorite retailer for additional pre-order item offerings.
Please check out the pre-order page for more details: http://dragonage.bioware.com/preorder.html
Though EA detailed its Dragon Age: Origins Collector's Edition (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/15/dragon-age-origins-special-edition-offers-mass-effect-2-freebie/) nearly a month ago to retail sites, the company is just now "officially" revealing the package. In doing so, it divulged some interesting details about the digital extras included in all copies of the game. Those buying Dragon Age: Origins (any edition) brand new will receive a free code to download "The Stone Prisoner," along with a "suit of Dragon Age-themed armor that can be used in Dragon Age: Origins as well as in Mass Effect 2."
According to EA's press release (http://investor.ea.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=402926), "The Stone Prisoner" will consist of "new environments, items, and hours of additional gameplay," and the titular stone golem that you'll be able to add to your party in-game. For those of you not purchasing the game new, EA is offering "The Stone Prisoner" as a standalone DLC pack for $15 -- a dollar amount that makes the similarly bundled Gears of War 2's Flashback Map Pack price (http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/01/07/gears-of-war-2-flashback-maps-hit-xblm-for-5/) look like milk money. Then again, who can say no to a stone golem? It looks like we're picking up the game new when it launches on November 3 (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/07/gamefly-listing-indicates-dragon-age-origins-delay/).http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/dragon-age-bonuses-free-in-new-copies-sold-separately-if-you-bu/
Pre-Order Bonuses:
Here are the store specific pre-order bonuses (regardless of SE or CE methinks). I find this trend obnoxious, but I enjoy the thought of executives from the stores getting together and arguing about who gets to sell which bonus item.
Amazon: LION'S PAW BOOTS
Adds to armor, dodge, and evading missiles.
Gamestop: FERAL WOLF CHARM
With this charm, hunters claim that they are enchanted on moonlit nights by scantily clad witches deep in the heart of the Korcari Wilds. As if that's not enough, the charm also adds to your armor and increases your health regeneration.
EA Store: BAND OF FIRE
Magical fire is used with great care in the construction of these rings. After a few unfortunate incidents of singed eyebrows and burnt hair, there is some speculation that this is why the Formari often shave their heads.
• Adds to Stamina
• Adds to fire resist
• Adds to spirit resist
To add to the pre-order bonuses... here's GameCrazy's:
Gamecrazy: Guildmaster's Belt
The guilds of Denerim are despised by the peasants of Ferelden because the guildmasters grow fat off their labors. Quite literally in the case of this belt's former owner, who could’ve stood to lose a pound or two.
• Increase Monetary Gain
• Adds to Cunning
• Increase chance to dodge attacks

True, but judging from the picture you can see that the case splits down the middle (top and bottom of the spine) and it's the same size as a DVD case... :)

Question about game play if i might. It looks like a hack and slash is that correct. I mean i am sure it will be more complicated then that but basically kind of like the Dark Alliance games. At least thats how it looks to me. Any thoughts?

Somehow, this morning before stumbling into bed, I managed to order Dragon Age Origins CE for PC for $51.96 shipped. Not amazing by itself, but considering that I payed for it with EA Cash Cards I only payed 25.98. I didn't realize it until I was just about to fall asleep, but I somehow managed to get 20% off at the EA Store's error. Wait til tomorrow, I told myself. Reorder Brutal Legend and Mass Effect 2 then and get Left 4 Dead 2 for free, I told myself. Supposedly there was a deal for 20% off on all instock items and seeing their error of including preorder items as well, EA stripped the offer down to almost nothing around 8AM. Stupid me for waiting.
Anyways, my question is: The collector's edition specifies that the armor set is usable for "both Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins" but will that code only work the PC version of Mass Effect 2? I've already ordered Mass Effect for 360 (couldn't really get immersed in the PC version), but I might consider reordering Dragon Age if it wouldn't work.

The 360 version right? I'd imagine it'd perform better on the PC, but who knows.
Anyone else think the blood is a little ridiculous? You'd think the characters would wipe their faces off now and then.

Seems like as good a place as any to ask this. My biggest turn-off from Fable II was all the "side" crap, like flirting with townspeople and having families that I had to pretend to care about, that ended up screwing me in the game and making me put it down because I hated that part of it so much (of course, this is the part of the game I think Molenayux or however you spell it thought would draw in the "non-gamers).
I like what I've seen of Dragon Age so far, but is it going to have that obligatory side-crap like Fable II had? I don't mind developing skills, etc (though again hated the QTE way Fable II made it), but the family and house aspects didn't add to the story for me and detracted in a big way.
I guess, will this be more like Oblivion or like Fable II?

Well, it's a Bioware game, so it's likely there will be a lot of side quests that you don't necessarily need to do, but should if you want the full game experience.
Also, I feel that I should add that none of the stuff you're complaining about in Fable 2 was necessary, so you made yourself hate it. You didn't have to do any of that.

This is probably true. It "felt" necessary to me (especially the house stuff so I could get $$), so I kinda thought/felt I had to do it and it bored me no end.
Anyway, thanks for the info.

I was just coming to post that DukeEdwardI.
I was skeptical of this due to EA's involvement, but this looks amazing (I will be getting this on the PC tyvm)
Played this at gencon, looked great. Didn't have much time with it since I was quite busy those days. I will say the PC version looks a ton better though that could be because the PC version was by all accounts done while the 260 version wasn't. And they were showing off the content creator for the PC version, and from the looks of it, the PC version at 10 bucks cheaper, and with the creator is a no brainer if you have a pc that can run it.

Yeah, I'm REALLY glad that there is finally a video like this available. Everything else has been EXTREME!!! trailers and making of docs (apparently there was some stuff like this, but I didn't know about it until after). The game is looking fantastic though. Wish he didn't pause so much as it broke the flow of the action, but I understand that he did so that people know what the hell is going on.
I also found these German Tutorial vids of the basics of Dragon Age (FYI, these are for the PC version):

I would order this from ea as I would like the CE for the 360 but I ordered the normal one from amazon and used some of a gift card for it. I could cancle it but I have been having issues with amazon refunding me money used from a gift card when the price of an item has changed. So if I cancle it I'm guessing I wont get that money back also. The steelbook and extra items would be nice but for that much more and chances are tax it really isn't worth it. I should have ordered from amazon when the CE was still on the site sold by amazon.

There are also mumblings (http://ramraider.blogspot.com/2009/11/ea-offer-to-remove-dragon-age-embargo.html)that EA now has review embargoes till Nov 5th unless you give it a 9/10.

DLC already out for the game?
"Stone Prisoner runs 1200 MS Points (197 MB) and brings a new recruitable party member, new plot and questing areas and new items. Warden's Keep runs 560 MS Points (126 MB) and offers up a dungeon adventure, ancient armor, chances at gaining new abilities and a base complete with merchants and a party chest to store loot."

That's old news. maybe it wasn't mentioned in this thread though. It's mostly anti-piracy attempt like Gears2 did (a good idea).
Stone Prisoner is free with the game (code included) and I believe Wardens Keep is free with the deluxe version of the game (another code).
I think there is a third DLC (also free with each copy) that is Blood Armor, which can also be transfered to use in Mass Effect 2.

This has been discussed before, but every new copy of DA:O comes with a code to download Stone Prisoner and the Blood Dragon armor for DA:O/ME 2 for free. Warden's Keep is day 1 DLC.
Bioware has said the game was ready for release in the summer, but since ME 2 was not going to be ready for Christmas, EA wanted a Bioware game at Christmas, so the DLC was originally intended to be released now, months after the game was originally scheduled to come out.
Now instead of just sitting on the DLC for months (especially since it might compete with ME 2) they putting it out on day 1.

If I go to BB early in the morning will they have any CE's available , or is it only for pre-orders. I recall seeing some CEs for other games.
Totally depends on the store. They took preorders on it but who knows how many they will have.
The EA Store and getting lucky at Best Buy are the only ways to get a CE right now (Gamestop and Amazon stopped taking orders for it months ago.)

Anyone have any experience with amazon shipping preorders on street dated games?
I bought the collectors edition, one day shipping on the 12th of September. They charged me late last night and it's been on "shipping soon" forever. Says estimated delivery of the 5th, but people have been saying they have already shipped other CE's.
Any chance it could arrive tomorrow and they just didn't update the shipping status?

They tend to charge your card a few hours Before or After they shipped. Amazon tends to be rather slow when sending an email letting you know your item shipped. Example was when I ordered Batman Arkham Asylum with release day shipping, I dident get the email/confirmed shipping till early the morning of release.

I've read about 8 reviews this morning. Unfortunately it sounds like the Xbox 360 version looks the worst. Of course, everyone says get it on PC. I really don't feel like spending 60 hours in my office chair though.... And I hate playing games on my PS3 (bluray only).
Gamespot gave the PC version a 9.5, PS3 version a 9, and the 360 version an 8.5:
The differences between versions aren't limited to the interface. Dragon Age doesn't look amazing on the PC, but it's an attractive game nonetheless. Zooming from an isometric view to a third-person perspective is slick, and while environments don't hold up quite as well when viewed up close, they're consistently lovely when viewed from above. On the flip side, the Xbox 360 version looks positively disappointing. Textures are highly compressed and colors are washed out, though the upside is that this version maintains a smoother frame rate than on the PlayStation 3, where things might get jittery when swiveling the camera around. The PlayStation 3 version features higher-quality textures than those on the Xbox 360, better color saturation, smoother facial animations, and shorter load times. Minor visual hiccups, like corpses that disappear and reappear, are a bit more common on the PS3, however. The PC version is the superior experience, but if you're choosing between the two console releases, the PlayStation 3 has the upper hand.
Sounds like not a lot of time was spent on optimizing the console engines.

Kind of sucks, but I can usually overlook sub par graphics if the gameplay is solid.

All those preorder items are DLC with a one time code and all, not items you can get in-game apparently, but this is a huge RPG, those items don't seem to matter as you might replace them early ala other games.
Also on the graphics, even though my mind tells me it sucks that the graphics aren't on par across the board, I was playing God of War 2 yesterday and one of my initial reactions was "the graphics are kinda outdate, but its a PS2 game so...". 5 minutes into the game, I couldn't tell you it was a PS2 game, I was into the gameplay, not the graphics. Graphics are nice on pics and paper, once the game starts, you kinda forget unless they show glitches or bugs on the game.

So I don't know how you're going to get the soundtrack/wallpapers off the PS3 CE, but on the 360 you just put the bonus disc in your PC DVD drive. Bioware learned their lesson from the Mass Effect 1 CE and decided not to Ubisoft us and let us take the songs/wallpapers off the DVD and put them onto our PC.
Soundtrack is 18 songs and there are 10 different wallpapers, each at 4 different resolutions. I'm rocking the Morrigan one on my PC right now.

I am so glad I went and got the CE from BB. I'm going to save it and make someone give it to me for my birthday (thanksgiving) or for Christmas. Not dying to play it but it's great to know i have a solid game down the line. I was a huge Baldur's Gate 1&2 fan. I still follow the mods for those games from time to time. From what I understand this game is a true "pause & assign combat tasks to your party members" sort of game and that is exactly what I loved about BG. You'd get slaughtered and think! Jesus this is impossible...but then you'd go back...rethink your strategy...remember you had that wand of web, that oil of speed, scroll of haste. Remember that your druid could shapeshift, etc. And you'd utilize everything to win.
According to the Giant Bomb review, the difficulty is "steep". They recommend your average RPG-er to play on Easy. After the harmless KOTOR games and the tame-as-a-kitten Jade Empire...I am ready to get my ass kicked.

I'm guessing like the Mass Effect LE, needlessly limited. I had look around all morning for the CE.
No retailers list it online, only in store GS preorders were handled. Best Buy should get a trickle in over the months but again, I think this will actually be a limited LE.
It's a pretty solid LE too, despite my inability to get the damn soundtrack off my PS3 BluRay. At least all the video is in a well transferred HD.
Mass Effect had 10 times the marketing support and Bioware still did a very limited run of it. I suspect the inevitable GH version may have the extras disc though like ME had.

To those of you playing as a Human Noble, I was wondering if I missed anything in the beginning: I only did the Dog side mission then went straight to Fergus hoping I could look around the castle afterward. However, once I finished talking to him it sends me straight to bed and then chaos ensues during the night. Did I miss anything important like any other side quests that were available before talking to Fergus? Debating whether or not to just restart, but would like to see if anyone knows.
In my opinion, the game doesn't look as bad as everyone says, but that's just me. Can't wait to get home from work and progress the story!:bouncy:

I'd say it's deeper than those games. That probably means it will have an overall narrower appeal. It's got LOTS of story stuff and LOTS of talking. If you aren't really into the lore and read the codex in the game a lot to learn about a lot of the backstory and talk to a lot of NPC's you'd prob find it boring.
Yeah, I'm trying to decide too. Does the comfort of the couch outweigh the lack of hotkeys? Hmmm...
I finally decided the couch was more important to me. From all I have read, it's almost a different game on the PC though, harder and more micro managing.

Picked it up for $19.99 on the GS trade in deal last night. Got the 360 version. Not to far into it and wondering if I should change the choices I made.
First I played on Normal but now I am thinking I should have take it up a notch. Then I chose Elf Rogue with the whole botched wedding thing. Now I am thinking Warier might have been more to my liking.
Edit: Anyone buy the add on stuff yet? Worth it?

How is the interface on the 360? A bunch of the reviews I read seemed kind of down on the console versions because the PC interface for the game was significantly different/better. Trying to decide if I want the PC or 360 version and that is kind of a deal breaker.
I refused to buy the game when all I could find were gameplay vids of the PC version because I loathe PC interfaces for RPG's (starts flame war, inadvertently).
I haven't played the game yet, as it hasn't shipped from EA, but I'm thinking that those who haven't been indoctrinated by PC interfaces should be just fine. If you grew up on PC, then you might prefer it.

You should have a code for the Stone Prison DLC or whatever it's called in the box. As for difficulty, from what I hear it ratchets up pretty quickly and by about 15-20 hours in, it can be pretty hard at times even on normal.

My biggest complaint with the 360 interface is that it's very difficult to pause the game and queue up orders. You have to hold the left trigger and then use the bumper buttons to cycle through and choose actions. Even then, it doesn't work that well (unless I'm doing something wrong).

Yeah, as I understand it, Stone Prisoner DLC is free with any new copy of the game, which makes sense because the 4 secret achievements are related to that DLC. The other DLC is just a bonus mission or something that people that bought the digital CE for PC get for free to make up for the fact that they don't get a cloth map or steelbook.
I can't really make up my mind if I want to stick with the CE which is already here or wait for the regular edition from Amazon. If the difference was only $15 I would just stick with the CE but after the Amazon credit and the fact that EA.com charged me tax for some reason, the difference is more like $35.

You shouldn't regret your CE purchase because you got the extra in game items that the regular edition does not come with, depending on where you pre-ordered of course. Plus the CE appears to actually be limited so the game's value will increase in time.

You have to hold the left trigger and then use the bumper buttons to cycle through and choose actions. Loving the game so far though. The story is awesome, voice acting is pretty good, and reading the stuff in the codex adds a lot to the story. They put a tremendous amount of effort into the story and its history, while characters and NPCs have countless things to talk about. I've probably spent half the time I've played already on just talking to various people and reading into the codex.
The only real gripe I have with the game so far is that your character doesn't even speak during conversations; only in battle.

I played with that. As soon as you press A it unpauses the game. How do you queue up more than one move on different chars?I think you have to individually switch to each character manually to perform specific talents if you like to micromanage like that. Or you could just set up their Combat Tactics slots and behavior ("if-then" statements similar to FFXII's gambit system) to fit your play style.
Speaking of Combat Tactics, does anyone know if the main character's Combat Tactics skill determines the number of tactics slots for all characters, or if each character's individual Combat Tactics skill determines the number of tactics they have individually?

I don't think so. It's treated like any other DLC on the marketplace. The only reason I can see why you would need to make an EA account is if you played the flash game Dragon Age: Journeys and want the items you've unlocked transferred into your game.

I ended up buying the regular ed. at Toys R Us yesterday....but still, where is my CE? I'm very annoyed at this point.

Just a quick question. I've got enough credit at GS to get a new game and I'm leaning pretty heavily towards this one, but I've never actually played this kind of game. I was also thinking of Borderlands, but from what I hear that game's plot is rather thin, and I rarely play online, if at all.
So just how easy would it be for a rookie like me to get the hang of it? Does it ease you in like most games these days, or does it throw you in the deep end right away? Would this game be the one to get me into this style of game?

Borderlands' greatest appeal for me has been the multiplayer. An FPS Diablo 2 (albeit, inferior to Diablo but you get the idea) solo just won't keep me entertained. With friends though.... :bouncy:
Dragon Age, on the other hand, has redeemed Bioware in my eyes. Baldur's gate was a game I enjoyed, KoToR I struggled to enjoy.... Jade Empire was fun, and Mass Effect blew nasty chunks (my opinion, obviously). Dragon Age is fantastic. It's single player only, which I found mildly disappointing, but the world is very well developed, the game is easy to get into and fun to play, and the story is paced better than the two Bioware games I had problems with.
And, if you're getting it from Gamestop, it is $49.99 this week (I bought my copy on Tuesday, and between school, L4D, Borderlands, beating Batman Arkham Asylum, and SF4, I've still managed to find 7 hours to invest in Dragon Age this week.)

I stopped reading here.....
(Lol. J/k. It's cool, you're allowed to not like games..)
Anyway, he is right, if you don't play online, then boarderlands probably isn't a good pick for you. The online is what makes it great. I'm about 10 hours into it and its getting a bit stale.
Dragon Age is a good bet for you if you are mainly a single player type gamer.
If you can wait until black friday, most stores are going to have it for $39.99

Warden's Keep is DLC that everyone has to DL except the PC's Digital Deluxe edition.

I'm 25 hours in, with a few hours spread across the other origin stories. Amount of the game completed ? 20%! ?!?!
But in all seriousness, game of the year. Even the graphics grow on you, there are tons of beautiful environments and architecture.

Really loving this game. Probably put 20ish hours or so into it.

I do not think there are any achievements that track what difficulty you play on. But I'm not 100%

The only version of the game that came with Warden's Keep is the Digital Deluxe PC version because there was no tin and map with that being a digital download. It's $7 on all the other versions.

First time viewing this thread.
I put about 10 hours in, everything was going smoothly, then I just started dying on like every battle.
I chose to go to Redcliffe first, and took about 6 tries to take out the room where you find everyone. Then I got owned by the 6 suits of armor afterward. I go into the overworld to grind and I get destroyed by a pack of wolves in random battles. WTF? I can't believe this wall I'm hitting!
The AI tactics probably screwed me as I put one guy as defensive -- only to find out he didn't attack unless I told him to. But it's got to be something else, too. I'm a level 8 elf warrior, by the way.
Any (non-snarky) advice? I'm really close to perma-shelving this. I could deal with the ugly graphics and bad inventory system, but this is ridiculous.

Change the difficulty. There are some good AI Builds on gamefaqs if you do a search that and tactics builds. Another thing is to have different characters master different things. Dont spread everybody around and too thin with the skills.

^^ Thanks for the advice. I already have been playing on Normal. I'd feel like such a weenie on Casual.
I looked on the official Dragon Age forum, and several other people have had similar problems.
It's just so weird to be going along at a good clip and then all of a sudden getting your ass kicked even though you didn't really change anything.

Bioware has had "AI templates" since Baldur's Gate 1. I think if you've followed their track record you'd agree with me in saying that no one who ever loved those games ever used the AI templates. You get the most out of the game by micromanaging your squadmates. Or else they wouldn't put a pause feature in the game.
The GiantBomb quick look said that Normal is pretty damn hard, so I wouldn't be ashamed if you switched over to casual. In the old Baldur's Gate days, your squad would be going through the forest and this giant worm maggot thing would come up and bite your cleric's ass, turn him to stone, then shatter him with the next critical hit. Let's just say that you can't resurrect a dude whose remains are scattered stone. Also, nothing better than talking to some random npc and having him turn into a rhaksasa.

Although ive had more than a few deaths along the way, its been fairly smooth. I did the witherfang quest first (did redcliffe yesterday) Redcliffe has some real good fights so i can easily see how you died, had one that took a good while before i beat it, the one with the revenant.Im making sure to have morrigan in the party, having a healer has made a big difference. Im playing on normal on the 360, totally love the game! Its kept me away from mw2 just fine lol...
I am about 26 hours in and I love this game. Between this and CoD 6 I don't need anything else for a long time.

I need to fix my Alistar tactics. He gets owned every single time I have a big fight. The guy is nothing more than a bully in this game. Guy always falls in a big fight for me. Half the time that happens it lleads to the rest of the party getting wiped out. It's like dominos when 1 person dies.

Not to be snarky, but...how often do you play rpgs?
If you didn't know that the guy wouldn't attack on defensive I'm guessing this isn't a genre you play ever day, because that's a common setting - don't attack unless you're attacked. I'd put it on easy and read some faqs until you get the hang of it. It'll make the entire experience more enjoyable.
^that wasn't snarky, I promise
