When I went to Blockbuster on 10/01 a sales associate was handing out flyers promoting a trade in promotion at the store starting October 5th The flyer claims that games and DVD's qualify for store credit, and it also claims that everything is worth at least $8. This is a great alternative to trading items at eb or gamestop or what have you, however, it only lasts for a limited time, and no, I do not know how limited the time is so don't ask. I'll just type out the flyer so I'm not flooded with questions.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRADE IN
AT BLOCKBUSTER
Gather up all those old DVD's and games
trade them in at blockbuster to get credit for anything in
the store!
Starting October 5th
For a limited time only
EVERYTHING will be
worth $8!!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: Hey guys, sorry for the lack of specifics. I went to the Tinley Park, IL Blockbuster. What I typed in under the post is the flyer verbatim, so I'm not sure about ps1 games, although I would be inclined to say yes on those seeing how my Blockbuster sells them. I really need to capitalize on this deal.

Geez, I hope this deal is legit in illinois. It sucks since there isn't any gamerush here so if this is true this'll be the closest us illlini will get to having a gamerush

Wow, this would be awesome. I could trade in some old sports games and get NBA Live 05. I gotta check mine out.
Oh, any idea if they will give you $8 for psone games?? Or would it be just next-gen systems...

Any idea if the $8 is store credit or pure cash?
I could make a lot of money on this deal pretty easily...

The 8 bucks would be trade-in credit, not cash. I was just at my local BB yesterday and I didn't see anything. YMMV is my guess.

I've seen the DVD $8 deal advertised at my Blocbuster but it didn't mention games at all. YMMV for sure.

As far as I know, my local BB is doing the trade-in deal but its only for DVD's. Didn't hear about an $8 minimum.
Also, I remember them doing a similar deal in the past but the credit could only be used on select movies. Don't know if it will be different this time.

So they'll accept used DVD's and give $8 minimum?
He;ll, you could buy a Gasaraki boxed set from Right stuf for $35 and then trade it in for nearly double your money.

Gamestops usually sell used anime DVDs for cheap, sometimes as low as 2-3 bucks. You could pick up several of those and make some nice money, and then buy some games or controllers.
Just a thought.

Reading the first post, it could mean that it will only get a fixed price of $8 right?
So even if you trade in a new game like Fable you'll get $8?
They should word it better. If it's $8 minimum, they should say "We'll add an extra $8 credit to each DVD/game traded in.
I need some clarification.

I'm sure that you get at least 8 dollars. Like, normally on old sports games you'd get maybe a dollar or so, but with this, you'd be guaranteed at least 8 dollars.

Does the $8 include ps1 games? Anyone know? I know they currently have the deal at gamerush with ps1 games if u trade in 3 or more you get $3 extra as opposed to the $5 this gen deal.
Anyone know anyplace that runs or is running a bare minumum trade in for cds? Like at $5 apeice? I'm looking to ride myself of a box or 2...thanks.

crap if this is true then I screwed up, I traded like 16 dvds for $5 (yes it was a minimum of $5, the newer ones brought like $6.50 or $7, *Store Credit*) so if this $8 min offer is legit, I would have missed out on a possible extra $48 of store credit...crap

I talked to 4 blockbusters AND the regional manager today about this. Its JUST dvds. Maybe some stores are doing the games to but assume its very YMMV. Corperate sent out an email for the $8 thing. The games thing (if yours has an offer) isnt inclusive of this offer so its prob something that particular store is doing.

Hmm, well my flyer definitely mentions game trade ins not just dvds (sorry I would scan the flyer if I had a scanner). The flyer says "everything is worth $8!!!" This makes it sound like you would get a flat $8 for everything, but a) that would make no sense whatsoever and b) the sales associate said everything earns you at least $8 like I said in the first post.

As stated earlier, games and dvds are two different promotions. The only nationwide promo is the dvd (i saw the email) You store COULD be doing a games deal but its YMMV. As far as calling, I wouldnt bother, I called four different stores and got four different idiots. You need to bite the bullet and go up there. I don't think I've ever seen a system for sale at my local Blockbuster. I've seen new games, used games, and PS1 game, but I don't recall them stocking any next-gen consoles.

You have to call around to see which stores in your area carry/can get systems. Took me 4 tries before I found the main one that does. My only worry is, since they sell so few I wonder if their stock is old and probably Thompson drive xboxes. :(

MegoW64
10-03-2004, 01:15 PM
There is a deal going on where if you trade in 3 or more games from the 4 major consoles then you get $5 for each game (bring in 4 games then you'll automatically know that you'll be getting 20 bucks)
The minimum for a dvd now is $5...so for a short time it's going to be $8, it wouldnt make sense for them to do that with games..they would lose way to much money.
Do you think Blockbuster wants to lose money? Hell no.

MegoW64, every time you post you are implying that I am a liar. The promotion includes games at my store, so please do not say "Sorry it does not include games." Maybe it does not include games at your particular Blockbuster, but that does not apply to all stores. My Blockbuster overprices some of their games by a decent margin, so paying $8 per game would still make by Blockbuster a profit. I don't see how this would "lose" them money as you said in a previous post. It may diminish their profits per game that they sell, but if this deal attracts a spike in trade ins the store will make out better with the sale.

well, they must be clueless, because both of the ones i've tried there (lawrence/western and broadway/foster) are participating. call around this week, they just might have not known about it yet.
i also spoke to a BB employee at length about this tonight, and he gave me a copy of the official terms and conditions sheet. basically, the dvd needs to be in their computer, meaning it's not completely obscure, and the game has to have some resale value/demand, or they can just decide not to accept it. i mean, i'll certainly be trying to trade in a handful of old sports games, but i think it will vary a lot by location.
ipso facto:
"6. DVD and game software titles, game hardware platforms, and other products eligible for trade will be determined by BLOCKBUSTER in its sole discretion and may vary from store to store. BLOCKBUSTER may elect not to accept a particular title (including game software titles for a particular game platform) or an individual copy of a particular title, a brand of game hardware unit or any individual unit, or other product for any reason, including, without limitation, suitability of title for resale by BLOCKBUSTER, inventory needs, or the condition of any individual product or packaging."

I'm sorry if you took it that way, but I assure you that in no way was I trying to imply anything except that maybe you might be mistaken...but you're right, it could be different at other stores
I just dont get why Blockbuster would take games that at one point just .50 and make it an $8 minumum...that's crazy.
Just yesterday I did some trades on a bunch of Football games from 2001-2002...with only one of them having a trade-in value of over $1.50
It would just be crazy, in my opinion, for them to do that but it makes much more sense for them to do it on the dvds since their trade in rate is already a min. of $5.
Do they give you a blockbuster gift card with the credit on it or is it something else? (Like just a paper receipt.)
My main question is, can the credit be used for purchases of new/used games and DVDs as well as be used to pay for normal old rentals at the BB?
Or if they give you an actual gift card you could probably eBay it for 95%+ of it's face value.
cyberlian
10-05-2004, 02:12 PM
You can buy a gift card using the credit, or you can attach it to your blockbuster account (i wouldn't recommend, cause then you can only use it that store), and my favorite, they can credit it to a gamerush card, which is like a reusable gift card that can be used at any blockbuster...

They should offer either to put the credit on your account or onto a giftcard. The credit can then be used for anything - rentals, movies, games, etc. You can get used or new stuff, but under no circumstances will they give you cash.
I think being able to get a giftcard with the credit makes this super hot. I'll have to check my local BBs to make sure they are at least doing the DVD side of the deal.

well, here's the deal. as i said earlier, and quoted from the blockbuster rules sheet, stores can refuse a trade-in or give whatever amount they deem appropriate (or, what the computer does anyhow). so, today when i went to trade madden 2003, they offered me $1.50. there's a "trade 3 get $5 extra on each" deal running for the time being, so if you're going to trade in some super-crap games, i suggest taking advantage of it.

By rule of thumb, if you're going to try to take advantadge of BB by buying cheap dvds, make sure they're at least listed on their website. You still run the risk of them not accepting the discs, but it's not as high.

Hey guys, Rocksolidaudio is right, all I saw upon my visit was the trade 3 games and receive an extra $5 per game sign. I have no idea what happened with the $8 for everything deal on games (pretty sure it applies on dvds) but the flyer definitely said everything earns you $8 (first post). I figure it is not worth the trouble of the $8 deal, seeing how with that deal I would have gotten $24, but with the extra $5 deal I earned around $25.50. So, yes I was wrong about the $8 deal applying to games, HOWEVER I was going by the flyer that I was given. It turns out that giving $8 per game wouldn't be that absurd seeing how the $5 extra deal earned me more credit.

So, like, I could trade in some stupid movies that I bought for some reason, and those old South Park Volume 1-6 DVD's? Howabout these crap wrestling DVD's I have for some reason? Do they accept wrestling DVD's, at all?
It is worth a try. If they are new I would say yes. I traded in Cat in the Hat, PLanet of the Apes, and got $8 for each today. As far as the no cover goes this is YMMV my Blockbuster would not take any DVD"s without cover art.

I tried trading in Road Rage II (Crotch Rocket video) and they wouldn't take it so I don't think they'd take the wrestling videos but it doesn't hurt to try.

These are pretty new WWE brand DVD's, and they make up half of what I'm trading in, so I sure hope they accept them.

Just traded in my stuff, they took everything (except two old WWE DVD's), and I got 200 bucks for it.
So, I used that 200 to get MadTV season 1, and Indiana Jones Widescreen collection, I spent like 97 on those, and still have 102 in credit left.
Man, I'm gonna stock up on cheap Wal-Mart DVD's, they seem to take them.

Wal-Mart DVD's are $5.50. It wouldn't be the greatest deal to trade them in for $8.

It's only a great deal if you don't mind BB credit. Personally I'd rather them give me cash. Oh well. The BBs around here don't have much worth buying anyway.
Might be a good idea to check Gamestops for used DVDs though. I sometimes see anime DVDs for 2-3 bucks there. It's worth a shot, I guess you could always return them if BB didn't take them.

Depends. If you buy 15 Walmart DVD's at $5.50 that is $82.50 plus tax that is about $88.
15X $8 is $120
120-88= $32 profit.

Why not just get a job. $32 for buying and selling movies is not that great of a deal. Plus BB does not take back some of the oldest movies so you could get stuck with movies they will not take.

While I was picking up MK Deception I traded in 4 DVD's without any problems. 2 were old wrestling dvd's..(Rock the people's champ and Judgement day 2001?). One of my DVD's had a scratch on the barcode but they still took it. I tried trading in dvd's that said promo only where the barcode is but they wouldn't accept it. Any ideas on how to get past that? Those DVD's came when I first bought my DVD. So it isn't like they are only previews for the actual movie.
Thanks

If you planned on spending that much anyways, it'd be worth it. Most likely, not though.
Anyways, I traded in 7 DVD's today and got $56. I bought 4 games with it. :D
Thanks for the heads up on this deal. Traded in some movies I never watch anymore and walked out with $152.50 in credit on my account.
PS The gamerush/blockbuster folks by me are especially nice. Pleasant to go into a store like that.

well here is what I'm going to do, I'm going to get a bunch of cheap dvds from Gamestop with my 20% I have and then go to bestbuy and get some cheap dvds getting rewards points. Then I'm going to watch those movies then turn them in to BB. It will be much cheaper then renting them and I'm sure I'll turn at least some profit.

Has anybody had any trouble having the balance on your account placed on a Gift Card for use at other locations?
My Blockbuster isn't the brightest bulb in the lamp, and I should have been wary of dealing with them; but I did and now I'm getting the run around. They are claiming you can only have the balance placed on a gift card at the opening of the trade account. So I've got a good deal of credit sitting at Blockbuster that I have no intention of using for rentals, and their new game selection is quite isht, with no means of special ordering games for customers. :?
I'd love to use my credit at their equally incompetent, but some times stocked Game Rush location.
I may have to get on the horn to the district manager if this doesn't pan out. :?

This deal is FUCKING BULLSHIT!
I went into BB today with a stack of games and DVDs and asked if I could trade them in. So the guy grabs them and starts checking the condition of the discs and what-not and he's like "Oh you know you can only trade in 2 a day, right?" (STRIKE 1). So I'm like, um NO, I guess I'll just trade Family Guy and Ninja Gaiden then. So he scans them and says Family Guy is $29.99 and Ninja Gaiden is $39.99. So I'm like hell yeah, I'll do that. Then he says that I could only get store credit, but only at THAT store. Turns out that store does NOT carry new games. (STRIKE 2) So I'm like, fine whatever I'll just get DVDs. So he gives me a paper to sign and goes and helps some other customers. So I'm waiting there for 20 MINUTES for this guy to come back and give me my store credit. (STRIKE 3!) FINALLY, he mosey's back over and DOES NOT APOLOGIZE and just grabs the sheet and starts typing stuff in. I ask if I can get a gift card so I can use it at other stores that DO sell new games and he's like "NO". So I start saying how the whole reason I'm trading stuff in is to buy new games and he INTERRUPTS ME and asks for my phone number. (STRIKE 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!) So I give it to him and he scans Ninja Gaiden again and he's like "Ok, this one's $15". And I'm like "WHAT? 20 minutes ago you told me it was worth $39.99"?? And he's like "Uh, guess not" (STRIKE FUCKING FIVE!!!!!!!!!) So I just say, Fine, forget it. Grab my stuff and say "thanks for wasting my fucking time" and storm out.

Hope you all have better luck. I for one will never set foot in a Blockbuster again.

I don't get how you see a profit when you buy $5 DVD's and get $8 in STORE CREDIT back...you're still spending money to get store credit. If you're getting cash back, then that's really the profit. Plus BB is usually overpriced on their used games.
I called the closest 6 BBs to me and none of them are taking DVDs for store credit. Anyone know of any BBs in north VA that are participating in this? PM me!

ive done this multiple times already. these stores are screwing you.
they ARE allowed to put the credit on a gift card
they ARE allowed to take more than 2 items per trade in.
if it's the manager thats pulling this shit, call the district manager, or just call their corporate office.

Ouch, that really did sound like a bad ordeal posted above.
I've heard of some BB employees being very nice and helpful, so not all of them are like that. If you want to press it further, you could get the name of that guy and complain. Waiting 20 minutes like that and not even getting an apology for the long wait is WRONG.

You know the Asswipe game you BB's resell prive the first time, and I guess he realised his mistake the second time round. Can you imagine, if you could only trade 2 items a day, the 5$ extra for 3+ trade in's would be very difficult :)
I too have had bad experience at certain BB's, but there is always another round the corner.

I dont think its at all BBs. Prolly only really high traffic ones or something.

Did anybody else attempt to preorder games with their credit, or did you just buy movies? Blockbuster I went to said that they can preorder games and I ended up getting Metroid Prime 2 and MGS 3 fully paid. Perhaps this is just for select stores, but it's worth a try if you have lots of BB store credits and their used game/dvd deals aren't the greatest.
