The GamesCon Discussion Thread -- Were the Rumors True, and Other Surprises from Sony

Sony's GamesCon press briefing starts at 12:30 PM EST (sucks that I'm at work) and I'm not sure if anyone is carrying a live feed. But I figured it'd be a good idea to hold all GamesCon discussion in one centralized location. So to kick things off, here are the rumors everyone has on mind.

1) Debut of the PS3 Slim
2) Possible PS3 Slim costing $300
3) Software based backwards compatibility (either free or costing ~$100)
4) Sony Releases a Brand New Title (http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/5642.html) (May or not be exclusive)
5) Gran Turismo launch date is revealed for end of this year (http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/5636.html)
6) PSP line gets a price drop (including PSP Go)

And just for fun -- Playstation Network is going to be offline starting from 2:00 PM EST tomorrow (http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/playstation-network-to-go-offline-tomorrow-8-18/); which, incidentally, is right around the time they're conducting their press briefing.

In the spirit of Bingo, I predict that the all the rumors will be prove true except for #9.

Thoughts on Backwards Compatibility: Regarding backwards compatibility, I actually believe that Sony would offer the necessary software for free but only if PS2 titles are made available on PSN. That way, Sony will know which titles will work perfectly. Releasing BC but not selling PS2 titles on PSN would basically give up that whole revenue stream to the used game market.

As it stands now, it seems that there will be no live video feed of the conference, so live blogs will likely be the prime source of information.

My guess is only #4 will likely be true.. I'm sure they'll just go over things and maybe show a video of a new game that hasn't been announced. MAYBE the PS3 Slim... doubtful though.

Here is my big prediction #1. Sony does not even mention a peep about the Slim.

#2. the biggest news is a Price drop for a limited time.

Please let the rumors of a 2009 release date be true. I'm such a nut I bought a steering wheel for each of GT3 and GT4 (bought the DFP like 6 months before GT4 came out to make sure I could get one), I am considering buying a copy of the PSP version despite not owning a PSP simply to make sure I have a copy of every game that has been released in the US.

Also on a purely personal level, NO CROSS GAME VOICE CHAT, this is purely because it will ruin socom.

I went ahead and Pre-ordered with SEARS. It printed and confirmed.

Why? Because I doubt the Slim will be $299

and theres NO WAY it will be available on 8-24 because it would have to be in Store back rooms by now.

Sony has to ship these Nationwide to many retailers.

Wrong, considering that 8-24 is the expected release date of the Slim, Sony may very well release these to ship when announced at the conference and they'll still make it to retailers in time. Consider that retailers are probably already sitting on these in their warehouses and just need to get the OK to ship directly to stores.

I'm interested in seeing what the Slim has ... I have a 60GB so I'm set, but my brother-in-law may be looking into jumping into the PS3 fray.

The issue is going to be that people are going to go and see the Xbox 360 Elite being $299 as well, and they're going to have to make a choice. Most parents, if buying for a son/daughter/whatever, are more likely to see the wider variety of cheaper games on the 360 and buy that instead of a PS3, even with the price drop.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm glad that Sony did this, and I do think it'll help a bit, but I don't think it'll be enough. They needed something bigger, such as BC being added in for ALL PS3's, or something like that. sounds like sony cant do anything right by you so why even bother with their consoles or games? if bc was that big of a deal you could have found a great deal on an 80gb model with bc or even a 60gb model why complain about not having it now and wanting it? what sony is doing is no diff that what nintendo is doing by selling classic games ( nes, snes, genesis) for download to their current console. nobody is making you buy them either.

a bc download isnt going to come anytime soon imo and its not like you dont have options for playing ps2 games. you can buy a a ps3 with bc or you can get a ps2.

as far as getting a 49.99 handheld not gonna happen unless its hott or an older model like a gba.even nintendo still sells ds lites for 100 so i would expect a drop for sony anytime soon. im not knocking you for wanting a good deal thats why the site exists but you come off liek you want somthing for next to nothing and thats not gonna happen.

Well this is good step in the right direction for Sony for sure. Dollar for dollar the PS3 hardware is superior to the 360 elite in every way. Better build quality, same size hard drive, wireless internet included, Blu-ray included. Next Sony needs to get GT5 and GOW III out the door and on shelves. Those are system sellers.

Yes, this is a valid point. But, it truly is not that big of a difference. GOW2 allows for 480p upconverting and widescreen support either way. And if it really is that big of a deal, you should be able to find an older model that supports it.

And I doubt they would overheat. Did you not see how much freaking airvents there is in the back? Or the fact that they shrunk the GPU and CPU immensely from the original 80 nm cuts? Or the fact that the power supply went from almost 400 watts to 250 watts? If it was still using the same components of the launch PS3, I would agree with you, but with how much power saving and shrinking they have done, I severely doubt it.

If anyone would leave the gaming industry it would be microsoft. Nearly ten billion in lost revenue and shareholders who still haven't gotten their money back from the first Xbox and most of the 360 generation. Shouldn't be a problem. With the right heat sync and airflow, 45-65nm chips are highly efficient, and run relatively cool. I assume that the slim is using 45nm chips, but even if it is running on 65nm, over-heating isn't a problem. Sony may screw up from time to time, but hardware design isn't usually one of those times.

Making them optional would definitely satiate part of my 'anger' towards Sony and the PS3. At least if they had a screen pop up and tell you what the FW update is for before being forced to download it and then giving you the option to NOT download it until later, since I usually only turn my PS3 on to check who's on from my friends list or to get on and PLAY a game.

Do you mind if I ask why you won't use it for movies? As for the companies making 'shit' games, I guess Little Big Planet was made by a bunch of hacks, huh? I can understand GTAIV being shit, since it seems like Rockstar has abandoned the PS3 version completely. But I've had the freezing and other issues on other games besides those two as well, so it's the SYSTEM and not the games if you ask me.

As for watching movies, the few movies I have on disc I prefer to watch on my DVD player, since there's nothing I want to try and 'stream' from anywhere.

I absolutely agree with you that the PS3 is foremost a gaming machine. That's why I bought mine and have more than 50 games for it. I also never said that movie playback was the best feature, I said besides playing games the PS3's best feature is playing movies, whether they be disc based or digital files. I feel it's a really nice feature and you should at least give it a try and explore all the movie file types it can play even if yours is not connected to an HDTV.

The PS3 is definitely a multimedia machine in Sony's mind.. they gambled it's future on it while using it to push the BD format and while they won over in the end, they lost a ridiculous amount of support from it's previous demographic, videogame players. You only set yourself up for disappointment if you felt like it was only going to be for videogames if that was your mindset when you purchased.

I think we all, as gamers, wish they would have taken a different approach, but it's far too late in the game to bitch about things. It is what it is. Sure it was priced far out of the realm of what traditional consoles retailed for, but it was never a bad value for the money given the advance in technology it took. It was always in line with the price of standalone blu-ray players. It had a ton of packed in features out of the box other consoles didn't. And if you were deal savvy, you could have had a 60gb BC version of the console at least as far back as mid 2007 for $350 or less like I did. (I still feel like there were better deals).

I wanna call you out on being the cheapest gamer because you're not wringing every ounce of usefulness out of the console like a true cheap son of a bitch would and of course you're bitter and resentful because you paid a damn lot of money to use limited features of a powerful device. I mean hell, you can browse the internet, use folding@home, stream music, movies and pictures to it, communicate with friends, stream media and games to a PSP with it, download and rent movies, install Linux, upscale DVDs and play the most cutting edge media available (BD), and I'm sure there's still things I haven't even discovered yet. Oh yeah, you can download and play video games on it too.

I will again grant you that the PS3 should have been a videogame console, but the definition of video game console simply evolved this generation and Sony put priorities on other capabilities before software. It's like you bought a ticket to Disney World for the sole reason that you like one of the attractions in the park and everything else involved in the process gets in your way and stops you from enjoying it. You kind of either need to branch out and discover what else it has to offer, or suck up the fact that you paid a premium to access want you want and that sometimes means you need to wait along the way because the world DOES NOT revolve around you and your needs.

I, for one, love my PS3 for the games, the functionality, the price I paid for it, and it's potential. I look forward to firmware updates because it usually means my experience will improve. If you're going to be too cheap to take advantage of it's full power by not using a HD tv or fast internet connection and you're not going to explore all the features then you need to stop bitching and step back to whatever era you feel more comfortable in.

Don't get me wrong, I respect you as a member of the board and you take most of the heckling in good stride, but I just do not agree with your stance whatsoever.
