Imagine an 8-bit RPG turned into a 3D world.
At least that's what I get out of the scan.

Story bits:

3D Dot Game Heroes is set in the Kingdom of Dotnia. This world was once made up of 2D sprite art like something out of an old school game. However, wanting to attract more people to the kingdom, the king decided to use technology to make everything 3D. This is where something goes horribly wrong, although just what that is has yet to be specified.

The nice thing about 8-bit is that when speaking of sexuality, it slides right in. You'll just have problems if you're missing a dot or have an extra dot seeing as it's not very flexible.


On another note, the game looks interesting. I'm definitely looking forward to it. I'd be willing to bet that this will get localized, so here's hoping to sooner rather than later.

Wow. It literally is a smash up of Zelda 1 and 3, all in 8 bit, but 3dorized. Music, jumping spider doods, rocks falling down off mountains....it's all there.

No, Sony said they are not publishing, but got the go ahead to "leak" that it is coming stateside from the actual publisher. Probably to head importers off at the pass. If I had to guess, based on From Software's Demon's Souls success and the fact that they are saying "don't import"... I'd guess Atlus. Could be wrong. I'm sure we will find out soon! YES!

So, this game is AWESOME. Holy crap. If you loved classic 2D Zelda games, this is for you. It's so much like Zelda it's crazy. I got the "Dash Boots" and they look and act exactly like the Pegasus boots (Hold button down to run forward with your sword out). The first dungeon is pure Link to the Past. You walk into a room, doors close, so you have to kill everything. The doors then open, and you move on. You find keys that you use later on in the dungeon, and there are also buttons on the walls, so you had to find the boomer-rang. And right before the dungeon boss, there was a warp to take you to the front of the dungeon, ala zelda. The boss even had a glowing area to know where to hit it. Heck there's even chickens going around town (I didn't try beating them up yet)

I put an hour or so into the game and if it keeps this pace up, wow. It has such a nostalgic feel. It's beautiful and so much fun.

I don't read or speak Japanese, but I've had no trouble so far. Again, if you have played a zelda game, you pretty much know what to do. The blacksmith has a sword sign over his roof, magic guy has potions over his, etc. So finding those areas are easy enough. The boots I got from a guy I just talked to, so talking to everyone just in case is a good idea. I've bought stuff, upgraded stuff, no problems. There is a little english in the game but it's pointless. On the main HUD it says what buttons are for block/map/etc in english and it says "Heath" and "Magic" in english next to their icons on the upper left of the screen. Of course this english is pointless since you can figure that out on your own.

I'll post more impressions ans I go along and I'll write up a review once the game is finished. I'll try to keep track of how many hours I play.

That's not cool to hear. I think it will do better in the States regardless, just because Zelda is a lot bigger here.

I don't see it getting ported just because of From's relationship with Sony at the moment. But either way it wouldn't surprise me. The more the merrier.

There wasn't an option as of yet to make your own guy, maybe you have to beat the game first to unlock it. I had to pick from 6 or so pre made characters.

I've unlocked 8 trophies so far.

Just made it to the 2nd dungeon. I had to use a magic tablet I got from dungeon 1 to show the path. It was pretty much the Lost Woods from zelda, where if you went the wrong way, you'd start back at the beginning. The tablet showed a map and I wrote down up left left up down down up left, etc to remember the correct path.

I upgraded my sword, got the bow and arrow and bought some more magic items.

Oh, you can upgrade your health like zelda too. You get one full apple (that's like hearts) when you beat a boss and it adds a full apple to your health. You can also find and earn 4th pieces of apple, to build one, to earn a full health too. Ala Zelda.

So, I haven't had too much time to play but I did get through the 3rd dungeon now. I got the hook shot there also. Oh I got bombs in the 2nd dungeon. It seems to be getting tougher. It's kinda weird going back to a 2d zelda type game, since there is no lock on, and you just put your shield in front of you, and if someone walks to your side you have to let go of the button and turn around, then re-up the shield.

The world is a lot bigger than I thought. It took me a half hour or so to get from dungeon 2 to 3, they were on opposite sides of the map.

Have had no language problems so far, so that's a plus. I admit I have paid people a few times not knowing what would happen, but it's trial and error. The main story though is simple and no problems to figure out what to do.

The item I got from dungeon 2 helped a ton in the 3rd (Think mirror shield, but covers your entire body) and reflects magic. The enemies now take an average of 6 hits to kill, so stunning them with the boomerrang or hookshot then attacking them is the best option.

I am hoping to find or buy more bottles, since I only have 1 right now and I need health now and then in tense areas.

I love this game. It's just so good.

Not to mention, this game is gaining popularity amongst gamers, and, being an Atlus game, could be hard to obtain (Demon's Souls, anyone?).

God Bless Atlus. They introduced me to Disgaea way back in the PS2 days, and continue to be the modern incarnation of Working Designs XD

I'm not quite sure the MSRP being lower than normal games qualifies as a deal here. If that were the case we'd have a ton (and probably do anyway) of threads about every game that has a MSRP below the standard $50 or $60.

Demon's Souls is NOT hard to obtain. It's even down to $50 on amazon. The DE, on the other hand, IS hard to obtain. I'd assume if a DE or whatever for 3D Dot Game Heroes is announced it'll be included in the OP but atm this is definitely not a deal. It's more of a notification of a great game coming out which gets posted in the deals section all the time anyway so I don't see it as a big deal and I appreciate the OP letting us know.

I kind of view this thread as a placeholder for when there IS a deal or a DE available for pre-order. I do appreciate the info though, OP.

It might go to the Wii.. Atlus has had moderate success there. But I doubt it will as it's probably not going to be easy to port a PS3 game to the Wii. I can't see this going to the 360 though as Atlus games haven't fared well on that. I'm thinking it'll stay on the PS3 given the success of Demon Souls.

I doubt this game will see any other platform besides the Ps3 as its already been developed, From has more than likely moved on to other projects and although they do develope 360 games they tend to favor developing on sony's hardware being a japanese developer after all. Atlus will translate and publish the game in the U.S. for the system it was designed for, I highly doubt they'll port it over to any other consoles.

Making games available on multiple platforms (in a timely fashion) increases sales. In America, more people own Xbox 360 consoles and multiplatform games usually sell better on the 360. As long as the cost of producing another version is not significant, there is no reason (besides loyalty/exclusivity agreements) not to produce the game on other consoles.

Considering this isn't a deal in any sense, I think it's more than reasonable to discuss the possibility that it could be ported to the 360. Given past practice, if it gets ported, it may be improved in some way given that it would have a later release date. I don't know about you, but I'm tired of having to buy RPGs twice when the later port gets improved.

Considering that the demographics for the PS3 tend to be older than that of 360 owners, I believe that there is larger market potential on the PS3 because a greater % of owners actually played the original Zelda and thus appreciate the retro experience more.

Got a chance to see this game in action courtesy of Atlus and it's looking like it'll be a great game.

There's plenty of humor in the story from the Japanese version (one character you can talk to is called Dr. Dic and there were plenty of male enhancement-level jokes) that sets the tone as a light-hearted tone. The oversized sword is tied to health along with being able to extend or widen it when you visit the blacksmith. There are a bunch of swords to collect and upgrade, which will require some extended time with the game after you beat the game. There is a New Game+ option and a From mode difficulty that gives you less health and adds more enemies to fight. You can play after you've beaten the game, which allows you to explore the map and unlock secrets and other stuff.

There are three mini-games in the game: a foot race, an Arkanoid-style game, and a tower defense game (think crystal defenders with the ability to attack enemies yourself).

The character creator is really cool, as you can set different models for different actions and then save those characters to a thumb stick or memory stick to put on your computer and upload to the hub Atlus will be releasing. They had a DQ-like slime character that turned into a Mega Man-like head when he attacked and later showed off a car that opened its doors and hood when it attacked.

Other bonuses include the ability to take screenshots yourself and a gallery for all of the loading screens (which Atlus has added a bunch more on top of the originals).

I forgot to mention that there will be an option to do an install that will pretty much make all load times a second or two long. They weren't sure how big it would be, but it'll probably be around 2-3 GBs.
