I went to target today after work(i work retail also) and I was going about my buisness then Im like i will pick up star wars battle front for some xbox live action. Then i pulled out my raincheck(FFX2, 44% off, still never got FFx2 in stock) to go towards BATTLEFRONT. Then the guy who works a electronic said my raincheck aint valid iM like i use rainchecks all the time, he is like well u have to wait for the raincheck to expire to use it im like ummmmm since when, then I told him im just reading the raincheck and it never mention anything about that, it says choose a substitute, he is like well this is for FFx2 im like umm ok but u have not got it back in stock for almost a month in a half(since aug24).
He is like the raincheck has tro expire to pick out a different item in same catagory and it also has to be 29.99 to get 44% off. I was getting pretty frustrated, and im like I need a second oppion on this......he sent me to theassistent manager and he hand feed her the same bullshyt(lol u can tell she dident know crap about them she was juyst agreeing with him lol). Im liek can I go somewhere or call someone to explain this better, he is like go to customer service(I then talk to the head guy their and he listened to what i had t5o say, and he said u are correct, have him escort u up here with the game. I then went back to the electronic jackass employee and said customer service said to escort me up their with the game, he simply said NO I WILL NOT LET U BREAK TARGET POLICIES.......im like can you get the game now pleas(trying to remain calm).
He then called the namanger and the manager came(the main manager not the clueless assitant) and he came back their the employee is trying to explain the raincheck thing to the manager and his side of the story...i then explained mine saying that how is the raincheck good after expiration(coupons are no good after they expire nor is milk, manager smirk) manager took my side saying no where on their does he have to get a 29.99 game or wait till after it expires......the employee then said "Im the head employee of target electronics, i know the policy" manager then responded "you only been here a month"i laugh....employee was getting really mad then said "You have to wait till it expires to redeeem the raincehck on another item im like ohh ok good I have 10 more at the house expiring next week, mayu i have ur name so I know who to talk to :)). the manager needless say that aint target policy, and said item must be substituted before it expires....manager had a nice little talk with the employee, while exscorting the game to service desk...the employee then said something to some chick who works their(something along the line i hate these cheap muther fuckers)....he was a guy needless to say. I then got my game for 44% off....took an hour to do so but I made it clear to him that I would leave if he stated that i can use it after it expires(he wanted to make me look stupid when I bring in a expired raincheck)

Anyways, good story. Sometimes retail people take their jobs to seriously. It's not like it's he's personally losing money. I used to work at a game store and if my boss said it was okay then I didn't care.
Shut the hell up slade, Mr. 2 post.
Also, great story man, I work cashier at a grocery store, and I rarely disagree with the customer, I'm just like whatever, unless they are rude, then I will challenge them if I know they are wrong. Being an ass like he did never works though.

Mine was less dramatic, but I had the same experience a few weeks ago while picking up Pikmin 2 with a 44% raincheck. The unpleasant clerk didn't think I could use the raincheck on a new full-priced game, and called the manager on her walkie-talkie. She had to back down.
This week I saw Pitfall PS2 in the display case and asked to buy it . . . it came up zero and the unpleasant woman pointed at the $29.99 price tag in the case . . . I said "its on clearance" . . . she got help and found out it was $4.98. She said "how do you know the prices and policies better then us?"
I just said "the internet."

my target is done the same thing, they wont allow you to pick a game priced higher then the rain check. If the rain check is for a 29.99 game you cant get a 50 buck game anymore. I think that is why target stopped doing rain chekcs. Hasnt been a rain check in over a month that was worth anything

Punched the above story into the Ol' Bionic Owl computer and here is the resulting output to those who wish to know what happened:
I went to target today after work, I work in retail as well, and I attempted to pick up Star Wars Battlefront for Xbox using a raincheck. I pulled out my raincheck (FFX-2, 44% off) whenthe guy who works a electronic said my raincheck is not valid.
I stated that I use rainchecks all the time, but he told me I had to wait for the raincheck to expire to use it. I questioned since when had the policy changed as the raincheck mentions nothing about that restriction. I told him the raincheck states "choose a substitute" to which he replies it only works on FFX-2. I then stated that I would love to, but FFX-2 has been out of stock for a month and a half.
He once again falsely states that the raincheck has to expire before you can pick out a different item in same catagory and that it has to be 29.99 to get 44% off. I was getting pretty frustrated and asked to see someone else for a second opinion who happened to be the assistant manager. It was obvious she was clueless to the policy as after hearing the false statement from the Target employee, she agreed with him.
I ask for someone else to talk to so they send me to customer service where I talk to a manager. He listened to what I had to say, agreed with me, told me to bring the game and the employee with me back to customer service. I then went back to the electronics department and told the jackass employee that customer service said to escort me up their with the game. He flatly refused stating that "I willl not let you break Target policies." I try to remain calm and ask him to please just get the game. He then called for the manager I had talked to to come out to the department.
The employee tries to explain his version of the the raincheck policy to the manager and his side of the story. I then explain my side, saying that there is no way the raincheck would be good after expiration; coupons aren't good after the expiration date, nor is milk. The manager smirked at my expired milk comment  then took my side saying none of those restrictions are printed on the raincheck. The employee then said "Im the head employee of target electronics, i know the policy" to which the manager responded "you've only been here a month." I laughed out loud at that comment.
The employee was getting really mad at that point saying "You have to wait till it expires to redeeem the raincehck on another item." I reply fine, I have 10 more at which expire next week, may I have your name so I know who to talk? :D The manager, needless to say, states that isn't Target policy, and said item must be substituted before the raincheck expires.
The manager then had a nice little talk with the employee, while escorting the game to the service desk. The employee then said something to some chick who works as a cashier, something along the line "I hate these cheap muther shaq-fuers." After an hour of arguing I had my game for 44% off and made a fool out a asshole 8).

If Target is running a sale and run out of stock on an advertised game, you can ask for a raincheck which will let you take the same percentage off a different game in substitution for the game that is OOS. The rules as to what you can substitute seem to be YMMV though.

My Target doesn't care so much. They just let me get whatever I want, even if the game the raincheck is for is actually in stock and I want another game. They don't even look. They just say "which one would you like" and ring me up with the raincheck. They never give me problems.

i won't even comment on the punctuation, because everyone already has.
and that target employee probably isn't gonna make it past the 90 day trial period. "head employee"... there's isn't any such thing. if you run into trouble at target, ask for the electronics specialist. he/she usually knows whats up, and has no problem redeeming rainchecks.
it would help too if you as a customer weren't a dick about it. don't act like you're some sort of big shot cuz you "figured out" how to use the substitute clause. we know what the clause is, and some of us have redeemed them many times before. i own 20 rainchecks myself. you're not amazing anyone with your cheapass abilities. when you act like a dick, you just prolong the process.
you won't believe how many people there are out there like that. jesus, anyone with internet access can find out the "secret" deals. it's like when the circuit city deal came around, one guy was smugly telling me that he knew which games would ring up 4.99. i told him, no shit, that's why there's about 5 of us mulling around these shitty games. you're not the only one with the list, buddy.

There is a simple reason... the corporation PAYS him.
Customers are always pushy and want to get as much as they can.
The only problem here is that the employee wasn't up to date on his contracts/rules.

I read the first part of the story where you had a raincheck that was a month and a half old (which I could of sworn I heard that they expire after 30 days)
I have one of those rainchecks and it doesn't expire until 10/12.
Anyway I'm glad you got the deal Chris XE. It's a pain when employees give you trouble over some of the more generous store policies (EBgames.com in-store return comes to mind).

I don't see why he, or anyone, would want to fight on the side of the big corporation. I woudl have let him get 5 games for that price if there was a way to do so.
I'd like to introduce you to a little word.. "Responsibility". Target employs him.. part of being an employee is doing your job and not trying to rip the company off. When you have a job and are on the clock.. it is your Responsibility to represent the company and do your best to increase that companys profits. When you try to help someone rip the company off (as the employee believed the OP was trying to do), you are not being Responsible, you are being a schmuck, and deserving to be fired.

* Target employee did sound like some little powertripping peon.
* That said, an employee *should* try to defend the company, if a customer is being outright fraudulent [which I'm guessing wasn't the situation in this case.] The 'customer is always right,' unless he's being abusive or a crook [again, not in this case, as far as I can tell.]
* No one expects perfection or Hemingway-esque caliber of writing on the Internet, and occasional incorrectly spelled words or typos certainly do occur, and to mock them is truly infantile. But a basic effort to at least *try* to spell correctly, and use sentences and paragraphs and capitalization will do *wonders* for your readability. I quit reading the original post about halfway through, it hurt my head too much. If you're not willing to 'work' a little on making your posts somewhat intelligible, you can't expect your readers to 'work' at bothering to read it.
That said, I'm glad you got Target to actually fulfill their policy, while smacking down some egotripping dude while you're at it.
Cornfedwb: Exactly. Plus, I know it's cool to try to screw Big Evil Companies out of money, but when it comes time to make up that money, where do they most often/easily do it? Labor. Especially un-skilled, short-term, low-seniority labor. You may want to screw Target and give the customer 5 games for 10 when he doesn't deserve it--you might just screw yourself out of a job.

I 'tried' to buy Gungrave Vol2(dvd) at Target. Tried.
Ok, here we go.
On a Sunday I was target and see GunGrave Vol 2 on the shelf for $14.99. I 'realize' Def Jam will be out the following Wed. which will come with a $10 giftcard. So I wait.
Wed. I go back and buy the game, get the giftcard. Walk up to the front register and the item rings up at $26.98? I say, no there is a whole shelf full of these that say 14.99. They call back to electronics and the person there gives them some override code which turns out to be GunGrave Vol1 price at $14.99. I buy the dvd and am going to walk out of the store when some beeatch from electronics comes running up asking me to go over to guest services. I wonder what is up. I go over there they look at my receipt and say I didn't pay the full price for that item... and I can either pay the difference or GET MY $15 dollars back! I'm like WTF??
These people are totlly CLUELESS about how to treat people. I ask to speak with a manager. Some other beeatch comes over and examines the situation and comes to the same conclusion... I need to pay the difference. I say even though there is a FULL SHELF of this item at THIS PRICE! I say Fuck IT and get my $15 back.
I'm FUCKING fuming now. I go back to the electronics area AND THEY HAD REMOVED THE PRICE TAG FROM THE SHELF!! Can you believe it!!?
Me and my friend TJ go out to the parking lot and call for the STORE manager with a celphone. At this point I had been there for about 45 minutes. A lot of BS. I get another manager on the phone and I tell her "can I talk to you inside the store about an issue I'm having?" She says OK meet me at guest services, I say No way, I'll meet you by the Pharmacy, I do NOT want to see these people again.
I meet the NEXT manager at the Pharmacy and tell her the story. She says go back and get the dvd.... I go back there NOW THEY HAD REMOVED THEM ALL.
She seems agast and calls electronics.......
.....
.....
.....
Now the story IS that the item is NOT supposed to be on the floor. It was put out EARLY. Which after all I had found out was true... but I had already bought the DAMN THING.
.....
....
....
more BS.
They are arguing on the phone and the manager is telling them I had already bought it and they can't be doing this. The electronics is going on about the street date... etc etc.....
FINALLY the manager says welll.... I'll give you the ITEM for $14.99 IF you come in on NEXT TUES when the item is supposed to be released!! I'm like NO WAY. Is there SOMEONE else I can talk with. Along walks the store manager... I thought I was talking to the STORE manager thats who I had asked for...... on the phone?
I explain my situation to him and sure enough about 5 minutes later a manager brings my dvd to me. No charge.
Anyway, after about AN HOUR AND A HALF of being at Target I got Gungrave Vol2 for FREE. Which is NOT what I wanted. I just wanted the damn dvd for the price it was on the floor at.
Target electronics is full of tyrants. To think of pulling prices off to make me look like a liar? God. I was pissed.

First thing=Im getting that same vibe JSweeny
Second=
People stupid+Gungrave=free
Everthing was fine with your story...the bit about paying the difference or returning it was in fact BS.
BUT, they gave you the dvd "For free" because they are NOT allowed to sell that DVD earlier than street date. Now the manager keeps a little note along the lines of "A-hole kid, Gungrave Vol 2, 1 copy" on his desk to even things out later, when they are allowed to sell that dvd. The manager saying you can come back when it supposed to be out and getting it for that specific price was a nice thing to do, you just ended up making yourself out to be an a-hole. She gave you the DVD, thus whiping the a-hole.
i do not miss regular retail...

I do NOT work at stocking their shelves. I had NO IDEA at the time the DVD WAS not SUPPOSED TO BE OUT. That is THEIR JOB not mine. The dvd had been there, lots of them for days and days. The Vol1 which is identical was about $20 when it was released, there was no reasoon for me to think the price of $14.99 was a 'big deal.'
When people buy items, no matter the cause they should not be FORCED to take items back. This is America, right?

Let me summarize:
You stock shelf with item A. When item A. is rung up the price should match the shelf price. If it doesn't, the customer BY LAW is still entitled to the advertised price. Employees should not then remove the price while the customer is haggling with management to make the customer look foolish. Is there something here people do not get?
The street date thing was after all this and was brought up only well after all their BS. In fact that point is irrelavent to what my actual complaint was. NOTE TO TARGET: Do not put out items for customers that are NOT TO BE SOLD.
And I'm 36!!

I do agree with that, if there's something on the shelf, unless it's wrapped up with a big sign "Not for Sale" the assumption is that it's for sale at the labeled price. If Target, or any retailer, makes a mistake, unless it's a totally obvious, nonsensical mistake [pricing a TV at 14.99 instead of 1499, for instance], they should own up to that mistake.
They should correct the price for future purchases, but they should sell it to you at the price at which you saw it.
Now, how the 'break street date' thing works, I don't know. I know they can get penalized for breaking street date, and maybe by giving it to you free instead of selling it they get the best of both worlds [you're happy, you got the product, the manufacturer is happy, they didn't sell any before street date].

Oh, and I forgot to ask, how do these raincheck dealy thingys whacha calls em work anyhow? Can anyone give me an answer?
If Target is running a sale and run out of stock on an advertised game, you can ask for a raincheck which will let you take the same percentage off a different game in substitution for the game that is OOS. The rules as to what you can substitute seem to be YMMV though.Damn, Ledhed. I was hoping ChrieXE would write a really long explanation so I could waste his time. Now I've wasted yours. I knew what rainchecks were, btw.

Dude! I had a similar experience, although nowhere near as annoying as what you had to go through. Last time I used a raincheck (the third time) I wanted to get Onimusha 3 with a Hitman Contracts raincheck. I asked for the game, I put it on the game after he set it on the counter, and he said, "$39.99." I replied, "Well, I've got that raincheck there." He picked up the raincheck and as he was punching in the substitution thing, or whatever he does, he says, "That's a low way to do it."
Now, I really don't know if that means something like "that is an inexpensive way to buy a game" (i.e. a positive comment), or "you're pretty low for scamming us with our perfectly clear and allowed substitution policy."
What do you guys think?

In context, I'd have to go with the latter.

I'd actually have to agree with you, in part. In Michigan, at least, it's illegal for the store to sell an item for more than the price it's advertised at.
Unless it's a mistake.
If the store's ad is misprinted, for example, and they make it clear that they screwed up, then they don't have to honor the price.
Putting the item out before its release date may or may not have been a mistake. But would putting it on the shelves early be considered one of those mistakes that the store wouldn't have to honor?
I'm leaning towards no here, if only because it was a Target employee who did it. They had control over the situation.

You could have saved yourself some trouble by walking out of the store right then and there with the item you paid for instead of caving in. You completed the transaction and the item is yours. They had no grounds to do anything about it after that.

Hmm. Lets look at the name of the thread.
Hmm. What about that would suggest that one went into the store/handled the situation with an aversarial/antagonistic mindset?
I went in and followed their policy to the T, being very polite.
From the name of the thread and your recounting of the disagreement, that seems doubtful.
hmmm so I got the game for 44% off, so since i got it at a CHEAP price by following their policy, Im a bad guy now.
If what you said was they way it actually went, it seems like you trampled over a good number of people just to get your way...and if your tone in the store was anything like that in your post, you come off as quite the spoiled, selfish little jerk.
This whole site is about getting stuff for cheap.
That seems like a rather large oversimplification.
If it were only about "getting stuff for cheap" there would be no need for the forums. Yes, games on the cheap was the orginal functionality that the site was created for, but the site has grown past its orginal function.
You and Mr Cobweb or what ever his name are TYRANTS of CAG

i didn't specifically call you out as being a dick about it. i was just saying in general that it helps if you aren't one... "you" directed to anyone trying to use a raincheck. that said...
the thing you gotta realize is, you're using a process that pretty much takes some to all of the profit away from a product that target intends on selling for profit. so you can't blame them for not wanting to do it. it's a store; they sell stuff. they don't welcome you in because they wanna just give stuff away.
but on your side of things... wanting to do it and having to do it are two different things. the substitute clause is target policy, and if you want to exercise that clause, there is no writing on the slip of paper that says you can't. i can argue with a guest all i want (which i rarely do, in the best interest of keeping my job), but in the end the process is higher than the employee's word. as the electronics specialist of my target, i school all of my employees to the written word, and i've also schooled certain supervisors to the clause as well.
see, as a cheap ass gamer, i love the raincheck substitute policy. but as a member of the "target team," it's easy to recognize "shady" use of the clause (and i used quotation marks on the word shady). what a team member does in response to recognizing this is where the problem occurs. some employees are cooperative, some are big-headed.
the solution? go to the next person up. if you're talking to a team member, ask for the specialist. if you can't get the specialist or if they don't cooperate, ask for the cash supervisor. if the cash supervisor doesn't help, ask for the LOD (or leader on duty). if the LOD doesn't do anything to help you, then your target sucks, and you can call whatever 800 number, because LODs WILL get feedback from them.
but yeah, don't be a dick. smooths out the process a little more. and take heed of my advice... it'll save all of us (retail employee and customer) from more headache.
of course, if you're STILL unhappy, no one said you HAVE to come into target anyway.....

I work retail, toys r us and I understand the whole policy but im not going to let an employee LIE straight to my face and then call me a cheapass? He wanted me to come back when the raincheck expired, and the manager got a little tick at that, because that is not their policy and the manager gave me 0 problems. but yes your post was useful to me, and I will keep that in mind.
im not going to let an employee LIE straight to my face and then call me a cheapass? :? If you're not a cheapass, why the hell are you on a website called cheapassgamer, trying to find cheapass deals? Sounds like a cheapass to me.
Now please, type something else so I can pick that apart too.

You also spelled picks wrong with your bad typing. And no, Sweeney said this site is for more than just deals now. The deals are still a big part of this website.

Chris, I wouldn't sweat it man. I remember when my Aunt told me a Best Buy horror story, and to this day she never has gone back. I told her she'd get it over it, etc etc. But what I didn't know then that BELIEVE ME I know now, when it is YOU who is being treated like human garbage your tune changes very quickly. I'm sympathetic to your plight; all we WANT is for the company to honor their own damn policies. In my case it was price, in your case rainchecks, but it always comes back to the same thing, we want to be treated fairly.

pity your mother I do, BUT when a complete stranger says it in a disformal way behind your back, then it takes on a whole new meaningYet it all still means the same thing. You're a cheapass with bad spelling who likes to complain about a stupid Target guy who was just doing what he thought was good for the company that he works for.

exactly.
This is why I wish Target would do away with rainchecks and just have more clearance sales.
