View Full Version : My lag online is unbareable. Suggestions?

In pretty much every online game I own, I get awful lag in it.
Killzone 2 - Shoot a guy in the head, run away for about 2+ seconds, hope not to get shot, receive kill.
Red Faction: Guerrilla - Getting into a slugfest with the sledgehammer? Forget about it. 95% of the time I can count on dying reguardless of who gets hit first.
SOCOM - It's pretty much the same as KZ. Shoot, "kill", hope like crazy I don't get killed in return.
It seems like in just about every game my opponent has an extra three seconds on me, sucking the fun out of about everything I try to play online.
I started off with a wireless connection. Opened the ports. Switched to a wired connection. In all 3 instances I still ran into this kind of lag.
This is really frustrating.. I use my PS3 over my 360 to play games online, and it's a little disappointing when shit like this happens on all my games. Is there anything I can do to not experience this much suck online?

If you're running the PS3 wirelessly, that could be an issue.
Also do you have the same issue playing games on the 360?

I just tried RF:G with a wired connection and I basically had the same issues as with the wireless.
I haven't played online with the 360 in a while, but IIRC, that's never been an issue.

Is UPnP enabled on your router?
Also, wouldn't hurt to check who's using your router. A neighbor might be leeching your connection.

UPnP is set to on. And it looks like I'm the only one using it. :-(
In other news, my 360 just got the RROD. I better figure this shit out soon

What else runs on your connection? PC torrents will kill your gaming if you don't limit the upload/download. Try finding options in your router to make sure no one else is using your connection and double check the ports.

how fast is your connection? What is your ISP?

yup depend on your connection too (mostly your Upload rate). And also a good thing to do is to call your ISP tell them your problem. First they'll probably tell you bullshits about restarting modems/routers, directly connect to routers, etc... just tell them you've done everything. And request to turn off the thing that limiting your PING. Broadband ISP nowaday put a limit on your ping. I forgot what it called sorry. I used to have 100+ ping in online games then I found out about this and called my ISP(Qwest) to have it turned off and now my pings are around 70 ish zone which is still pretty high imo.

I used to have this same issue on MANY games and I couldn't even connect on Red Faction's online when I tried to join CAG night the one week.
But after switching from the standard Westell 6100 modem that comes with Verizon's slowest speed DSL(which is what I have)and upgrading to a Westell 327W I seem to have solved some of my lag issues.
I still have them when trying to voice chat with PSN friends and I'll routinely get booted from the chat room about once every 5-10 minutes or so.
However, I still can't figure out how the hell to get into the wireless settings for it and I'd like to lock that down so I don't have some neighbor leeching what little bandwidth I have.
As for opening ports, what kind of router do you have, MillerTime? I used to have a Linksys WRT 54G and it's supposed to be the hardest router to get to work with DSL, but I somehow made it work(apparently not that well though).

no significant other/brother/sister/parents/etc being bandwidth hogs?
are you using a campus college/university internet? they love to bottleneck/packetshape you.

I live in a house with my dad, and I unplugged his PC during the wired check and everything still played like crap (though he pretty much only uses it for email). The only other possibly thing is my computer, which usually has a few programs running at a time (AIM, Firefox, sometimes utorrent but rarely).
The router is a Netgear WGR614. I have the time warner cable all in one package (phone, cable, and internet), and they gave me the router when I needed a new one after experiencing problems with my old one.

Try doing a speed test using your PC and post your results.

Damn thats kind of slow but you should be able to still play lag free. You mentioned this problem before and its an odd one. I would go with the ISP bottlenecking your traffic or something

That is sorta slow...
I get about 19 Mbps down and 5 Mbps or so up.
But yeah, definitely should not affect your gaming.
Try looking into the router you're using, maybe it doesn't play nice with the PS3 if you say your 360 played lag free.

It's not that slow. It plenty for online gaming. -- Apparently a bunch of folks are spoiled by their superfast college connections. It's very expensive where I live to get anything faster than that.
Try putting the PS3 in a DMZ and see if that corrects the issue.

Except I get that speed at my house.
Nice try though calling us spoiled. Call us lucky if anything.
Also please note I didn't say it was like turtle-like speeds or anything and that it shouldn't affect his gaming.

The thing that worries me is the fact that you said that you use your cable internet for your telephone. That combined with wireless internet will kill any connection, and if you get a call during a game then forget about it. Is someone constantly using the phone in your house? Getting off wireless was a great move, but since that is not working, I would check to see if the router is the issue. What you need to do is directly connect the cable modem to your PS3, but beware that this will disconnect your phone connection. If you are able to play without lag when it is directly connected to your PS3 then it looks like your router might be the problem. If it is still slow, then either your internet provider is robbing you or your PS3's ethernet port is messed up.

I have a similar issue. When on PS3 normal wireless, mine is really laggy. I would be lucky to stay signed on to the PS3 Network. My xbox360 live connection (wireless) works perfectly (no lag). They are on the same tv (same distance from Linksys router). I called both ISP and Sony to solve issue; neither could help me.
Playing around I have got my PS3 to work good sometimes... this is how I did it. I took the gaming wireless standalone adapter (linksys) i bought for my Directv box (for On-Demand) and plugged it into the back of the PS3 (i.e. making it a wired connection).... Instantly, things became more stable.
It is almost like the wireless card inside the PS3 is terrible (I have a 60 gb model).

08-21-2009, 02:53 PM
I've got a 60 gb too.. There are huge storms in the area ATM and my internet is out so I can't really test anything now (CAG mobile ftw!) , but ill look into some of your suggestions when I get the chance. Thanks guys.
It sounds like the router isn't configured correctly. the 360 does not need configuring for the router, but the PS3 does. I was able to game lag free on 3 mbps down and that was far less then what this user posted. Always make sure you're on NAT 1 or DMZ mode or you have everything routed properly as the PS3 is more picky when it comes to port forwarding.

I changed some settings around.
NAT is set to open on the router.
Signal Strength is 100%
NAT type on the PS3 is type 2.
UPnP - Available.
I Believe DMZ is active on the router.
Now to test it all out..
:edit: It looks like I'm pretty much lag free for now.. I only tried Red Faction, and would love to verify that KZ2 and SOCOM are now working online as well, but the difference in lag before changing the setting and after is completley awesome.
I changed the DMZ to the PS3's IP address, and the NAT type to open. It looks like this was enough to solve my issues (on RF:G at least). Thanks for the suggestion, Paco! I'm so pumped to be without lag it's not even funny. Thanks a million man.

You really think his is slow? You should see mine. Although I can play games fine online with no lag. Go figure...
It makes me laugh that they're talking about how slow his connection is when IAMTHECHEAPESTGAMER has the slowest connection in DSL history and he is supposedly lag free.

768k a second. Not even the standard 1.5 mbps that almost every other dsl provider gives.

When I first switched over from dial up. They offered 768k. 1.5, and 3.0mbps. I got 1.5 which seemed like enough. About a year ago it upgraded, and changed the prices. I'm getting 3mb for the same price I was paying for the 1.5.

Hmmm. I never knew DSL went as low as 768k in all honesty. I think that's only worth like ten bucks. Anything more is a ripoff.

768k/128k seems to be the entry level speeds around here as well for DSL. If you're average family who surfs and doesn't do much else it's fine, but yeah if you're gaming on that better hope no one else is online at the same time.

768k a second. Not even the standard 1.5 mbps that almost every other dsl provider gives.
Considering that I just upgraded from dial-up like 2-3 years ago and that I don't really use my connection for much of anything(GTAIV online, web surfing on the PC), I don't feel I really NEED the extra speed.
But if they would give me the higher speed connection for the same price as the 768, I'd upgrade, but I figure they will probably bump the price by $10 for the extra speed. For that additional cost, they can keep it.
I'm definitely all about getting my services as cheap as I can, since I don't feel that even the low speed DSL I have now is worth the $20 I'm paying a month.
Low Speed DSL with AT&T is like 1.5 for 20 bucks and 3.0 for 25. Spend the extra and switch. That speed is murder. I want some MORE speed but I really should be saving money.
I'm using 12 mbps down and 1.5-2.0 mbps up

I'm willing to bet most of you guys have a regular\normal bandwidth connection of 4-7mbps that bursts during high bandwidth use for short amounts of time. Unless of course you are purposely paying for Roadrunner Turbo, or in a higher end college campus environment.
For example I'm paying $42 a month for Time Warner Cable's Roadrunner 5mbps package. I'm getting around 4-7mbps if I average together normal consistent transfers. If I test the connection, it always runs faster at the beginning or end of downloads, and all speed tests are giving me higher then normal results. I'm testing off as 24" iMac on wired gigabit ethernet thru a Apple Airport Extreme 802.11N router. Speakeasy.net bandwidth meter tells me I'm getting 28204kbps downstream and 487kbps upstream. The first number is nonsense and is getting spiked. The second number is more accurate, and I'd like to get that closer to 1000 if I can. Running other sites tests give me similar results.

I should, but I don't think my contract is up till Jan or Feb and I don't wanna face a fee for terminating it early. Plus, I'm not even sure if AT&T has lines in our area. We have it through Verizon, on top of the monthly phone bill, which is convenient since I think without having a phone line from the company in the house it's like $35-40 for the base DSL I have.
I just checked and AT&T doesn't have DSL available in our area, so I'm SOL. It's either Comcast for $40 a month or Verizon for $20.

Do you guys know of any other settings beside DMZ and NAT that I should change on my router (or PS3)? My PS3 is currently about 5 feet away from the router, but eventually I'm going to have the PS3 upstairs, and I want to configure this the best way that I can.
IAmTheCheapestGamer
08-22-2009, 08:07 PM
If you haven't done it already, definitely look into port forwarding, since it will make the connection the PS3 has much more stable.
That reminds me that I should try and do that again on the Westell I now have, though it sucks since I'm still locked out of the wireless settings for some reason.
I just wanna make sure the signal is locked down and no one can use it except me, if I should want to.

Bordering on trolling? Seriously?:lol::lol: Whatever. All I know is, $20 is the MAXIMUM I'm willing to pay for internet access, so unless Comcast decides to offer up a $19.99 a month for 36 months or so deal where it's locked in and they can't spike the price on me, then I'll stick to this slow speed high speed. :D

Your internet is trolling you cheap ass mother fucker. Seriously your internet is slower then an old womans vagina moistening. Your internet is so slow that the Neo Geo CD loads faster then it. Your Internet is so slow I can play a round of King of Fighters on the PLAYSTATION ONE before your shit is done. Your internet speed doesn't even qualify as high speed. If that was offered to me as high speed I would laugh at Verizon's face. I'm paying 45 a month for internet and I would never downgrade my nice 12 mbps down and near 2 mbps up. I need that for my personal fun.
But seriously. Your internet speed is bordering on trolling. If that isn't internet trolling, I don't know what is. Because that speed should be outlawed for how slow it is.

Damn, this is still an issue with SOCOM. I just played a game, usually what would happen is I would kill people, they would drop, it would pop up as a kill a few seconds later, then I would die. Thoughts? :-|
