View Full Version : Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - classic, or overrated?
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has gotten excellent reviews, but I thought it is kind of overrated. What do you guys think?

it is over rated. combat is bland and the game gets really old about 1/2 way through. Still at 82 percent and have minimal desire to finish the game
also, moved it to general gaming since its a multiplatform game.

I bought it for $10 at TRU and I really thought it was worth it. A very good game. I cant wait until PoP 2 is $10. :)

It's a good game. The ability to rewind time and re-execute failed manuevers is a stroke of genius. But I got to the point where I hated combat. It would have been nice to be able to bypass combat scenarios by finding alternate paths. I voted "overrated" because I don't believe it was "Game of the Year" material. Still, I'm glad I bought it and played through it.

It's a great game. The control, graphics, level design, etc. are all top notch, and the sands of time gimmick, which allows you to control time, is genius in it's application. It does have some imperfections, such as repetative (but quite fun) combat, and rather bland enviornments, but the good outwigh the bad.
I thought it was good, but not a classic. I wouldn't say it was overrated though.

Loved the puzzles, thought the combat was great fun...for about 10 minutes before it got repetitive and dull. My vote goes to overrated, high 8, not a 9.

The game was pretty sweet...especially the first time you stop time (that was pretty redundant eh?), and rewind it to escape a seemingly inevitable death. But I would agree with previous posters who said the combat gets repetitive.

Having played and loved the original PC versions way-back-when, this game was absolutely fantastic for me. Definitely some room to improve, but what was there was well done.

The rewind function was a really nice addition to an effective, well designed platform/adventure game. It's a bit short but it's fun enough to want to play it again.

prince of persia is one of the best games to come out in a long time, no game has had the battles so good, no game has had platforming as fun as this, and very few games can keep up with the in game graphics as PoP SoT did. I cant wait for The warrior within i am buying at full price for sure

I got it like 2 weeks ago for 20 inc. a free stargety guide. I played it for like a week. I really liked it but i dont know what happened. As soon as i got like 50% through i just completely lost interest. So yeah its a good game and all but totally not a GOTY material. But im still gonna get the 2nd one when its price drops.

Definitely overrated. The gameplay was OK, but I simply didn't find the characters nor setting interesting. I mean, you play as some pansy looking prince with MC Hammer pants (pretty corny character IMO). There were other annoying things like little cutscenes everytime you drink water. Other than that, pretty decent game, but not Game of the Year material.

strange, just opened my copy from TRU and it is a good game thus far. it may be repetative, but im feeling the rewind. its good, no game of the year though...

In my top 5 games. Amaaaazing game, and one of few I've had the desire to actually finish. I played like three days non-stop until I was done with it. I've pre-ordered PoP 2 and I'm ready to rumble.

Overated, yes, but still not to the point of Windwaker which Gameinformer (quite possibly the worst reviewers to ever grip a pen) called "The experience of a lifetime! Not to be missed!" Now that's overated to the max, it'd be like saying that Chocobo racing is the game Nascar fans have been waiting for their entire lives!

Yeah I think it's overrated. I mean how many times can you do the exact thing before it gets boring. For me it was 52% before I said to myself "I'm way over this"
I need to finish this game. I can't remember how far I am, but I do know that the game has been great so far. I'm going to try and beat this after I beat Pikmin (forgot about this game for awhile), Fable (played alot (6 hours) but not deep into the game yet, Ninja Gaiden, and maybe Riddick and Metroid Prime (need to get and finish before the sequel comes out).

i liked the simplistic battle system, it made it seem like less of an action game and more of a puzzle game.
classic? that cant be answered now
over-rated? perhaps a bit
good game? ...yeah

I loved the game. It's one of the few games that held my interest long enough to finish, but I did find myself periodically yelling at the screen in frustration at the endless respawning enemies.

I'm loving it. PoP is an amazing game, and I kind of regret being so immersed in it I rarely take the time to look around the enviroment. I love the puzzles (just the right amount of difficult), and the way the Prince moves. Combat is so-so; fun, but repetitive sometimes frustrating because of the endless enemies.
All in all, though, awesome game. I'm definitely planning on getting Warrior Within.

I hardly ever finish games I start, but this was the last game I went all the way through. Graphics and stylish gameplay was top notch. It stood out as one of my favorites of the year.

If you take the game as a rental that you play through once then I think you will find it to be one of the greatest games you have ever played (in my opinion), but multiple playthroughs make it seem less enticing without any extras and the stale combat.

I seem to play through this game once every 2 months even though I have a stack of games that are waiting to be finished. IMO one of the greatest of this generation.

You mean Prince of Persia: Male Gymnast?
I'm glad I got this with that Blockbuster game pass. This one went back after a day. I think what I disliked most was the camera. Poor angles made the jumping very frustrating.

it's the best game I've played this year (waited and bought it with the free splinter cell), i don't think it was overrated at all
I liked the story, it was easy to pick up and play, it was a lot of fun

it's overrated. well, for $50 it was. If someone bought it for $20 dollars, then it would be perfect for that price. I bought it for $50 :( The combat was as someone stated "bland". Most of the place was fog. The graphics weren't THAT great.

Combat was repetitive but platforming doesn't get any better than PoP IMO. I could solve the platforming puzzles all day, With great graphics and controls, I loved the game and have the second pre-ordered through gamerush.

I thought it was great. It did get a little bit repetitive near the middle, but the puzzles got more interesting and the environments cooler after that. It could have been a bit longer.
Graphics were excellent, and I really enjoyed the music. The voice acting was ok, but it was hard to hear them sometimes - the sound engineering for that needed work.

I loved the game, but it was slightly overrated. Notice how everybody was praising it to death last year, but now they attack it for it's repetitive combat.

It was fun but got a little old. All that jumping and all. Ending kinda sucked. No big boss or anything. The end boss was weak didn't die once. The elevator ride torward the end was wrose then the big boss. ( I didn't see the water fountains) Till I fought and killed all the monsters for the 100 time ands then after I beat them all I was like damn it there is a fountain in here! Worth the 5.00 bucks i paid for it on launch week from Game rush.

Not overrated.
Excellent puzzles.
One of the best ending cinemas ever IMO.
Classic status is borderline due to two things...
*Possible minor SPOILERS*
Combat is spread out but when you start fighting, too many enemies can be thrown at you.
The final battle is hugely disappointing.

I'd say PoP is fun but it gets old really quick, all the puzzles seem to be the same and the combat doesn't change much, I really like the 3D original they included that's pretty fun.

I finally picked it up for $15 today. It seemed like one of the, "sont miss" games

I think it's better than average, not quite classic but not overrated. If you can get into the story (and get to the ending) it definitely transcends and approaches classic status.

I didn't think it's overrated, per say, just not game of the year. I enjoyed the hell out of the game.

Classic for platformer fans, but it was supposed to be one of those games that transcended genres and its simply not. Very boring and I had no desire to keep jumping on walls, platforms, repetitive combat, etc. Just not fun.

I like it, I've only gotten about 25% into the game, but I enjoyed it all... the combat is a little on the tedious side, but the atmosphere, puzzles, and overall package is great.
Very good game, I wouldn't say classic...

I liked it a lot. I really enjoyed the puzzles and felt that the time rewind feature was really innovative. The combat does get a bit repetitive, but I think overall it was a great game. Not much for replay value, but definitely worth the money. GOTY material? Maybe, maybe not. Classic Xbox? I'd put it in that category (I mean, we can't limit classics to GOTY only....)
