The first 2 months are free to play online, after that it's $8.95 a month. You can still play single-player and split-screen though, and even if you cancel your Xbox Live account you can still play the game offline (as long as you have a Gamertag stored on your Xbox, you can play PSO, even if the account isn't active or if your Xbox isn't connected to the internet).
But note that characters and the free trial are TIED TO EACH INDIVIDUAL GAMERTAG. This means that if you ever cancel your Xbox Live account, you'll never be able to play online with those characters again. But, this also means if you use a different account or loan the game to a friend, the game can still be played online for another 2 months for free. In fact, I've gone through 3 Xbox Live trial accounts, and I've gotten a total of 6 months of free PSO online :) . Have to make new characters every 2 months though :(

Then you haven't REALLY farted while engaged with a urinal. The kind of fart that cuts you off midstream. The kind of fart that sounds like you popped a blown-up brown paper bag with a sledgehammer.
