Just asking this out of curiosity: has anyone read a tie-in novel (or tie-in comic/graphic novel) for a game? How do they compare, quality-wise, to other tie-in books - for example, Star Wars novels?
The only tie-ins I've read myself are the Disgaea manga (which was merely okay) and the Valiant Super Mario Bros./Nintendo comics from back in the day (not bad overall; the Mario ones in particular are still pretty good). Currently, I'm on a StarCraft kick and am thinking of checking out some of the tie-in novels - anyone read those?

i read the first Mass Effect novel (i think its Revelation) which is a prequel to the game and i was pleasantly entertained. It gave some backstory to what was going on during certain parts of the game and explained a lot more in depth the alien races and their relationships. I was about to start the 2nd book which i believe pretty much picks up after the ending to the first game. Would definitely recommend for just some light reading fiction.
Also, ive read several of the Warcraft novels, specifically the ones that are in the Warcraft Archive collection. My recommendation is the buy the Archive which has 3 books and 1 short story, but skip the first book (Day of the Dragon), or at least come back to it after youve read the others......it is one of the most boring pieces of fiction ive ever picked up. However, the 2nd and 3rd books are wonderful. Especially the one about the upbringing of Thrall, which if youve played WoW you can play an instance that directly coincides w/ the novel.
All in all, i dont think youll go wrong if you choose either of these 2 series.

I liked _Halo: Fall of Reach_. It's not the kind of thing I normally read, but I thought it did a great job of fleshing out the backstory of how the whole Spartan program was started.
