This is a bit late but...

I had a subscription to Magnatune.com a while ago. The subscription itself was excellent, it's one of those "pay as much as you want" type of things although there is a minimum. I think the lowest amount was $20 or $30 for 3 months access. You can pay month by month or album by album if you want too. The subscription gave full access to the entire collection and you keep the tracks after the subscription expires.

The music is all DRM free in fact they even encourage you to distribute the music to up to 3 friends (honor system in play here) because they would like to increase their exposure. And the thing that put it over the edge for me was that they offer lossless (!) downloads of their songs. It was the only time I purchased music online vs. physical format because I do not care to pay money for a lossy version of a music track. I downloaded all the songs I wanted in FLAC and converted to ALAC. The track selection does not include the big name lablels/titles but there is a lot of interesting indie music to listen to.

Also since this is CAG, the music that was used in Braid was all licensed from magnatune.com so you can download the Braid soundtrack there as well :).

Napster (now owned by Best Buy) has a plan that will let you download as many songs as you want (and keep 5 permanently) each month for $7 ($5 if you pay for multiple in advance). You can get a 7-day free trial at napster.com

The Zune Pass gives you the same thing except it's $15 and you can keep 10 songs permanently each month. They have a 14-day free trial at zune.net
