Hi, I think that I am finally ready to plunge into the "evil" world that is consoles (but just for HALO). The $150 Arcade deal at Walmart seems too good to pass up, but the only problem is that there isn't a Hard Drive. So my question is - Where can I buy a 360 HDD for a reasonable price (like < $40 for the 20GB cause that's really all I will ever need). I have looked on Ebay and most of the ones at that price are from Chinese retailers and I have no experience with them.
Thanks

You can try the Real Canadian Superstore to see if any 20GB units are floating around, although I doubt it; an expensive option, albeit one of the better ones, is checking out the 60GB bundle from FS/BB. It comes with a 60GB HD, 3 Months of XBL (You gotta start somewhere!), a wired headset, and an ethernet cable. If you wait for a sale, you can snag one for $98.99 (Certain sales offer 10% off accessories, and sometimes you can even get 20% off, making it $87.99!)
Alternatively, if you have enough qualifying games, you can trade 3 games into EB and pre-order a game that qualifies for the "Gaming Guarantee," which would allow you to trade that game back into EB within one week for $69.99 in EB credit, which you can put towards the 60GB Starter Kit, or a 120GB HD, if you're so inclined.
Lastly, I'd keep an out eye for the forums, both the Canadian and American, for fellow CAGers that are selling Xbox 360 HDs for reasonable prices.
Realistically, the $149.99 will cost you much more than the initial price, so I'd look at getting the Halo 3 Elite Bundle; it includes Halo 3 and a 120GB HD (an extra $150 if you want to buy it separately), and a wireless network adapter, if that's something you require. If you don't need it, just sell'r on CAG or locally, you should get at least $60 for it. $329.99 + tax, you're looking at around $300 for a fully featured system + an awesome game. In fact, on Friday the Halo 3 Elite's come with The Darkness and Prince of Persia at Best Buy, two games you can easily sell for $30 combined. Hell, I'd buy those for $30! :D

Although it was not me that asked the question, must say thanks to you game_fanatic for the answer, it is really informative.
I am hesitasting between Arcade or Elite (OR none) for the X360... I am thinking the Project Nadal thing in 2010 will require a hard drive and that Arcades will need a boost in $$$ invested to make them work for this.

No worries cash:)
I'd also try eBay if you were looking for the cheapest possible option; some retailers in the US and Canada offer the 20GB for around $50 shipped; personally with the slew of XBL titles, game installs, demos, videos, and DLC, the 60GB HD should be the minimum you look at. Considering some 'Game of the Year' Editions are coming with a code to download the GOTY-material (Gears of War, for example, has a code that permits you to download all the extra maps and additional content, but it gets stored on your HD as opposed to being stored on an additional disc) you'll need the extra space. Here's a used 60GB HDD off of eBay (http://cgi.ebay.ca/MICROSOFT-XBOX-360-GENUINE-60GB-HARD-DRIVE_W0QQitemZ320427326101QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVide o_Games_Accessories?hash=item4a9af4fa95&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_2321wt_1167) that might not be too bad, but I'm wary spending that much on electronics through eBay.

Same feeling about Ebay, I like it for small purchases but not for purchases like harddrives, but it is probably one of the best places to get it.
EBGames 50% off an accessory when you bought a used game ($25 or more price tag I think? not sure) could also be a good way to get a hard drive while spending credit if this promo comes back. I prefer a physical store for such purchase.
I am not sure I need/want a X360 considering I have a PS3 that is doing the job (and my low interest in online play)... I will wait to be sure!!! :P If EB decides to match WMT/FS/BB $150 price on Arcade, I might not wait though!

Thanks for your reply, and I understand what you said, however, the Xbox (for me at least) will be my Halo system, not really looking for much more/less, but it needs to hold maps for like 3 games, which is why I wanted the 20GB to begin with.
Thanks again though

I have a like new 20gb HDD for trade if anyone is interested. I am not looking for the bank, just something tangible.
