My wife has been wanting this movie for some time and this year I was going to get it for her for Christmas. Well, I waited too long as apparently the movie has been discontinued. Now, with that being said, she said she'd rather have one from Japan with English subtitles/English dub over the US release, and now I'm on the hunt for that. I've checked out a few sites, and I don't see a whole lot that I trust. I was just wondering if anyone had any good sites they recommend for a cheap copy of the film. I've seen a few different covers, but I think this one is the one I'll need: http://www.ekmpowershop3.com/ekmps/shops/uk2usa/images/my_neighbor.jpg

It's being re-released in December, likely alongside the release of Ponyo. Try to hold out until then.

I love this movie. My second favorite Miyazaki film after Laputa.

I don't know about the Japanese version, but if you have a local Moviestop I would check there. I actually picked it up about two weeks ago at my local one for only $15!

Is it really being rereleased? Because it's selling for a ridiculous price on eBay.

You might wanna check your local Best Buy stores. I saw a copy a week ago when I went to pre-order Snow White. I believe they were $16.99. The Disney 2 disc release has both English/Japanese audio tracks. Check out the image below if you don't know what the case looks like.

i also saw it recently at Best Buy for about 18.99 or so.
the Disney one does have both language tracks, although i did think Disney did a good job on the English dub for this movie. (the original English dub from the Video release is aweful though)

From an August update at UltimateDisney.com:
August 18, 2009 - Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo opened ninth at the box office over the weekend with earnings of nearly $3.6 million from 927 theaters. While that might not sound like much for Hollywood, the G-rated fantasy came close to equaling the final tally of the previous Disney-distributed Miyazaki flick (2005's Howl's Moving Castle) and registered as the fifth all-time biggest anime opening in North America.
Ponyo is expected to come to DVD and Blu-ray by the end of the year. We've just learned that it will be accompanied by new Special Editions of Miyazaki's first three films made after the founding of Studio Ghibli: Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, and My Neighbor Totoro, all of which recently had their original Disney DVDs quietly discontinued. It's not yet clear if the 1980s films will be on Blu-ray as well as DVD. Provided they stay on the schedule, we should have more information soon...

You might want to hold off on the R2 anyways. I own 1of each release and here is the skinny.
R2J: FOX oop Dub, Japanese audio track, DUBtitles (the subs are timed and EXACTLY like the dub is, word for word), 16:9 widescreen anamorphic
R1 oop Disney: New Disney Dub, Japanese audio track, translated subs, 16:9 widescreen anamorphic.
R1 oop FOX: Old Fox dub, 4:3 fullscreen, NO japanese audio track.

Yeah, the old Disney release was the best one. Sounds like the new release will be even better.
Everyone should get Ponyo too; it's fantastic.

I saw Ponyo as well, but unlike films like Howl's Moving Castle or Princess Mononoke, I found Ponyo to be geared almost entirely toward children. The animation was still fantastic, though.

Ponyo's tone is very similar to Totoro's - that's why I brought it up. Mononoke is aimed at adults. Howl's is closer to Spirited Away, really.

I missed Ponyo in theatres, but I'll absolutely pick up Ponyo and the Totoro re-release. Maybe even Kiki's Delivery Service- I have that on VHS! :P
